While driving at 75 mph, your car suddenly lost power and stalled on the roadside. Your dashboard warning lights came on (battery, oil, engine, and key lights), and you heard abnormal ticking from the engine. The dealer diagnosed catastrophic engine failure — the engine seized and won't turn over. This repair will likely require engine replacement or a complete engine rebuild.

Your brake pedal is going all the way to the floor, indicating a problem with the hydraulic electronic control unit (HECU). There's an internal leak in this unit that creates both a fire hazard and a brake system failure. While your specific vehicle identification number may not be listed in recall SC197, your car's year, make, and model are covered. The repair will likely involve replacing the faulty HECU unit to restore normal braking function and eliminate the safety risk.

FireFiled: Feb 2026

Your 2013 Kia Optima experienced a sudden engine fire while driving. You noticed black smoke coming from under the floorboard with a burning plastic smell, and the battery warning light came on. The vehicle caught fire and exploded, causing severe damage including the front end blowing onto the windshield and the steering wheel detaching. The fire was extinguished by the fire department, and your vehicle was a total loss. This incident was related to a known brake system issue (NHTSA Campaign 23V652000) that had not been repaired before the fire occurred.

While your niece was driving at 65 MPH, a strong fuel smell came from the vehicle without warning, followed by violent shaking. When she pulled over, black smoke and flames came from the vehicle, which was completely destroyed despite the fire department's response. Your vehicle was subject to a known safety recall (NHTSA Campaign 23V652000) for brake system issues, but the manufacturer's investigator never showed up to inspect it. The repair would have involved inspection and service of the hydraulic brake system components.

Filed: Jan 2026

While driving at 70 MPH, your speedometer malfunctioned and the check engine light flashed. You noticed a burning smell and smoke coming from under the hood, so you pulled over and let the car cool for an hour. When you tried to restart, multiple warning lights appeared and the car wouldn't start. After the dealer looked at it, they said the warnings cleared but recommended replacing tires, oil, and the oil filter—even though you'd replaced the oil and filter just two weeks before. You declined the repairs, picked up the vehicle, but the same problem happened again and the car stalled while driving. The vehicle has not been fully repaired, and the dealer towed it again but provided no updates. The repair will likely involve diagnosing and replacing components in the engine cooling system, fuel system, or electrical system causing the overheating and starting failure.

Yesterday [XXX] as I was driving with my wife present, suddenly warning popped up: Stop the car, hybrid break system safety, not safe to drive, or something close to that, I don't recall exact words. The car started to sputter , the brake pedal lost power meaning no brake, I quickly looked at the rear view mirror, luckily there was no car coming up close to me, the car lost speed and I slowly drove into an almost vacant parking lot across Lowe's, turned the engine off. Waited 30 minutes and start the car and the issue was gone. The same thing happened almost a month ago but that time the car was parked and hybrid brake system safety popped up as I tried to start the car and went away after 45 minutes of the engine being off. Had yesterday's episode happened while I was driving on the highway two weeks ago to visit my grandsons in Fontana, I would have surly killed in an horrific accident. My vehicle is Optima Hybrid. Thank you. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I am a owner of the Kia Optima 2013 and wish to fill a complaint with the dealership Luther Kia of Inver Grove for refusing to complete/resolve the safety recall of NHTSA #23V652. I attempted several times but was told by the staff, the remote start on my vehicle need to be removed and replaced in order for them to complete the safety recall. It would cost 200.00 to take it off and then, another 200.00 to reinstall it at the cost of myself. This seems like an unreasonable high cost to make sure my car is safe. I don't think is fair or right. This is a inconvenience for me! Please help!

suddenly while driving, vehicle produced a hybrid system warning light to stop driving immediately and do not drive. Next warning said to check breaks. Following the warning I tried to park, the car then rolled backwards, while foot was on breaks. breaks did not work! I immediately put the car in park and turned the car off. Car was then towed to dealership. When vehicle arrived at dealership warning light was no longer displayed. Dealership flushed out Break fluid and replaced break fluid. Car was picked up and while driving home (luckily was exiting highway) while getting off the ramp warning light came on again, had to stop vehicle in middle of road and place car in park afraid there would be no breaks. I waited with my Hazzard lights on as cars passed. Once the road was clear, I proceeded to attempted to pull car closer to the side of road to get out of lane. As breaking to park vehicle on side edge of road, loud crunching noises were heard and had to place the car in park. Left vehicle running this time while having it towed back to the dealership instead of turning it off this way they could see the issue at hand. When tech witness the issue, I was told the car was unsafe and that it was the break module or also known as Hydraulic Electronic control Unit.. Furthermore I looked up information on this issue and my Make & Model and year of my vehicle is listed on Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-652, page 3. Also Report shows parts: Component Name 1 : HECU Component Description : Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit Component Part Number : 58920-***** and also part number 58910- Although my vehicle vin number does not currently show a recall for this part, report also states VIN numbers will be released to dealerships November 10th 2023 and to the vehicle owners November 14th 2023. Not sure that my vehicle will be included but this definitely is a safety issue. If this would have been on the highway it could have caused an accident. This is not safe for anyone.

On June 12th myself and two friends were traveling on a rural two-way traffic hwy. As I was attempting to pass another vehicle, the car lost all power. I was barely able to avoid a head on collision. I pulled over to the side of the road which had only enough shoulder to fit my car and there was white smoke coming from under the hood. All the dashboard lights were lite after I pulled over, but nothing prior to the car losing power. I was on a curve in a dead zone for our cell phones. After opening the hood, white smoke was billowing out, and I could smell what smelled like burnt rubber. Once the car cooled off, I was going to attempt to start it, but I could not depress the brakes. The brake pedal was stuck. We managed to get a ride to an area where I could call to have the car towed to a private mechanic, who told me the motor had seized. I just purchased this car in March 2022. Nothing was ever mentioned to me by the dealer of any recalls or any other issues with the car. They made me sign a paper stating I was buying the car as is, which I see now should have been a red flag. The Dealer was San Jose Kia in California, and I'm very angry that they would knowingly sell me a defective car, risking not only my self but my family and friends.

When leaving work on 1/6/22, I didn't let my car warm up for more than 1 minute because I was in a hurry to get home. It was very cold - I think -10 if I remember right - and I had just passed through an intersection about 2 blocks from work where road construction closed the road to one lane. The car in front of me stopped because someone in front of him was turning. I had plenty of time to stop & hit my brakes but had no response, much like not having power brakes, but the pedal felt very firm. As cold as it was, there was no ice or snow & the road was dry. I had no traction control or ABS lights come on & ended up rear-ending the car in front of me. The police came & made a report & I came home & checked KIA forums to see if this had ever happened to anyone else but didn't find anything. I explained it to my KIA service advisor but they found nothing wrong & had no explanation. I thought I had maybe imagined it until it happened again, also on a very cold morning, about 2 weeks later in my own driveway. Just no response of the brakes. I couldn't push the pedal hard enough to stop the car. I also mentioned it to my insurance adjuster who just said to let them know if I found out anything further, which I didn't. I never thought to report it here until my husband had an issue with his car recently & was advised to do so. Even extreme cold should not affect a system as important as the brakes on a car & I believe this is a major safety concern. My accident was minor because I was not traveling at a high rate of speed & was at a safe distance, but the brake failure was still the cause of the accident. When the failure happened in my driveway, I had braked when pulling onto the road but didn't stop. If another car was coming or I was pulling out at the end of my street where there are 4 lanes of 45mph traffic, this could have been disastrous! Please notify me of any steps taken by KIA to remedy this issue. Thank you.

SUDDENLY THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED TO THE CAR ON THE ROAD WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MPH ON A HIGHWAY. IF THERE WERE ANY CARS BEHIND ME, I WOULD HAVE GOTTEN REAR ENDED, AT A VERY HIGH SPEED, POTENTIALLY RESULTING IN SEVERE INJURY. I WAS NOT ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR ANYTHING MORE THAN 5MPH DUE TO THE BREAK CONSTANTLY BEING APPLIED TO THE CAR RESULTING IN ME NOT BEING ABLE TO MERGE ACROSS THE HIGHWAY SAFELY TO THE SIDE. THE CAR GAVE THE "CHECK BRAKE" ALERT ALONG WITH "HYBRID SYSTEM FAILURE". THE KIA DEALERSHIP IN FREMONT, CALIFORNIA DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE. ATTACHED IS THE DIAGNOSIS REPORT. THERE WAS A BRAKE FLUID LEAK INSIDE THE HYDRAULIC ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (HECU), POSSIBLY RESULTING IN AN ELECTRICAL SHORT. THAT IS EXACTLY SAME ISSUE AS KIA RECALL 20V519000 ISSUED IN AUGUST 2020. IF THE HECU SHORT CIRCUITS, THERE IS AN INCREASED RISK OF AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE. KIA NEEDS TO ADD THIS VIN TO THE RECALL. IT'S SAME YEAR MODEL AS RECALL. I WAS DRIVING MY CAR DOWN A HILL, I HAD THE RIGHT OF WAY SO I DID NOT NEED TO ENGAGE MY BRAKES AT A STOP LIGHT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL. THE EMERGENCY PARKING BRAKES AUTOMATICALLY ENGAGED FOR NO APPARENT REASON. I COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN HIT BECAUSE OF THIS MALFUNCTION. I HAD TO PULL OVER IN A PARKING LOT AND BEFORE I COULD PARK THE CAR, IT COMPLETELY LOCKED UP AS PULLED IN. I WAS FORCED TO STOP IN THIS MIDDLE OF A NARROW PARKING LOT BLOCKING CARS FROM BEING ABLE TO EXIT THEIR SPOTS. I CALLED KIA ROADAIDE ASSISTANCE, WHO INSTEAD OF GETTING ME HELP, TRANSFERED ME TO A LOCAL DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO PROVIDE ANY HELP. NOT ONLY DID MY CAR FAIL ME, KIA CUSOTMER SERVICE DID AS WELL. .

THE FRONT BRAKES ON THIS VEHICLE LOCK UP REALLY EASILY ON SLICK ROADS, THEY ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALER BUT THEY CLAIMED THEY WERE OPERATING TO SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE OPTIMA. I'M SPECULATING, BUT THEY APPEAR TO WORK AS THOUGH SOME ENGINEER SET THEM UP TO WORK ON ROADS THAT DON'T HAVE ICE OR SNOW ON THEM, NOT REALLY UNDERSTANDING OR REALIZING THAT WE HAVE ICE AND SNOW ON OUR ROADS, HERE IN THE USA. I DON'T KNOW WHERE THIS VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED OR ENGINEERED, BUT IT REALLY APPEARS TO ME THAT ICE AND SNOW COVERED ROADS WERE NOT ACCOMMODATED FOR. I THINK THEY ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND HAVE A GREAT DEAL OF DIFFICULTY STOPPING THE VEHICLE ON ICY, OR SNOW COVERED ROADS SAFELY AND WITHOUT THE FRONT WHEELS SKIDDING OUT OF CONTROL. THE ANTI-LOCK FEATURE DOES RELEASE THEM BUT AS SOON AS THEY APPLY AGAIN THEY GO INTO A SKID. *TR
