Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.

KIA MOTORS AMERICA, INC. (KIA) IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2008 KIA OPTIMA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 29, 2005, THROUGH JANUARY 29, 2008, AND MODEL YEAR 2007 AND 2008 KIA RONDO VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 13, 2006, THROUGH MARCH 21, 2008. THE CLOCK SPRING CONTACT ASSEMBLY FOR THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) MAY BECOME DAMAGED THROUGH USAGE OVER TIME. IF THE CLOCK SPRING CONTACT ASSEMBLY BECOMES DAMAGED, THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT WILL EXPERIENCE A HIGH RESISTANCE CONDITION POTENTIALLY CAUSING THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG TO NOT DEPLOY.
Risk: IF THE CLOCK SPRING DEVELOPS HIGH RESISTANCE, IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE DRIVERS AIR BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PROPERLY PROTECT THE DRIVER, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURIES.
Fix: KIA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE VEHICLE'S AIR BAG CLOCK SPRING CONTACT ASSEMBLY, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 11, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-333-4542.

KIA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2008 OPTIMA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 29, 2005, THROUGH JUNE 13, 2007. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE SHIFT CABLE MAY HAVE BEEN INSTALLED INCORRECTLY, CAUSING TENSION IN THE CABLE. IF PRESENT, THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE CABLE TO DETACH FROM THE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY'S DOWEL PIN PREVENTING THE TRANSMISSION FROM BEING SHIFTED. THE SHIFT LEVER CAN THEN BE MOVED INTO THE PARK (P) POSITION WHILE THE VEHICLE'S TRANSMISSION IS STILL IN THE LAST USED GEAR BEFORE DETACHMENT.
Risk: IF THE DRIVER LEAVES THE VEHICLE WITHOUT ENGAGING THE PARKING BRAKE, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE VEHICLE CAN ROLL INJURE A PERSON IN ITS PATH OR CAUSE A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE SHIFT CABLE AND REINSTALL IF NECESSARY FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 23, 2011. OWNER MAY CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 143)
Air Bags →5 issues
Your airbag warning light has turned on multiple times since 2020. The dealer identified issues with the seat buckle, clock spring, and driver seat, though not all repairs were completed. Although the light turned off on its own in November 2021, you're concerned about whether your airbags will actually deploy in a crash. The issue may require replacing the driver seat, clock spring, or occupant classification sensor components.

Your airbag warning light turned on again after the dealership repaired it the previous year. The dealership says the clock spring (the component that connects your steering wheel to the airbag system) has failed again and isn't covered under your extended warranty. This is a critical safety component that enables your airbags to function properly in a crash. The repair will likely involve replacing the clock spring assembly in your steering column.

Your passenger airbag sensor isn't working properly — it can't reliably detect whether someone is actually sitting in the seat, causing the airbag warning light to turn on and off unpredictably. Kia offered an extended 15-year warranty to cover this defect, but you weren't informed about it at purchase, and that warranty has now expired. Getting this fixed will likely involve replacing or recalibrating the occupant detection sensor system in your passenger seat.

Your airbag warning light has come on. The dealer has identified the issue as a faulty clock spring, which is the component that maintains electrical connection to the airbag system when the steering wheel turns. This needs to be replaced to ensure your airbags function properly in a crash.

Your airbag warning light came on and stayed on after you started your car. The dealership diagnosed a faulty clock spring (the component that maintains electrical connection to your airbag system as the steering wheel turns), which you had to pay $500 to replace out of pocket. You believe Kia's recall should have included your March 2008 model, since the recall only covered vehicles built through January 2008, even though the clock spring defect appears to affect later 2008 models as well. Fixing this issue typically involves replacing the clock spring assembly.

Your shifter cable detached while parking, causing the transmission to remain in Drive even though the shifter appeared to be in Park. Your car continued rolling and required the emergency brake to stop it. The dealer diagnosed that the entire shift cable needs to be replaced to restore proper transmission control.

Your transmission got stuck in neutral and won't shift into drive, leaving you unable to move your car. You noticed there was a recall issued in March 2011 for transmission shift linkage issues on your model, but your VIN isn't showing the recall in the system even though you bought the car after the recall date. The dealership refused to review the recall information you found, so you're unsure how to get it fixed.

Your transmission locked up while you were turning in a driveway, causing your vehicle to get stuck in drive mode and unable to start or move. This happened suddenly even though the car was working fine moments before. The issue may involve transmission fluid, solenoids, or internal transmission components that need inspection and repair.

While driving in reverse, your transmission suddenly shifted into neutral without any warning, and you couldn't shift it back into drive afterward. A mechanic found that the shifter cable was broken and needed to be replaced to restore normal transmission operation.

Engine →2 issues
Your engine cracked at just 29,061 miles, even though the car was well-maintained. Your dad heard grinding noises before the engine failed and the car stopped while driving at 30 mph on a winding road. This appears to be a known issue occurring at similar mileage on this model year. Fixing a cracked engine typically requires a full engine replacement or major rebuild.

While driving on the interstate, your engine started knocking, then shut down completely and wouldn't restart. You believe the connecting rod bearings failed due to insufficient oil flow, even though the oil level was at the proper amount. This engine has been recalled by Hyundai and Kia for some models, but not all. The fix will likely require engine inspection and possible bearing replacement or full engine rebuild.

Power Train,exterior Lighting,air Bags →1 issue
Your car experiences multiple electrical problems that started right after you bought it in November 2024. The engine loses power during idle or deceleration until you press the gas pedal, and the alternator has already needed replacement once and may need it again soon. All your lights—headlights, brake lights, dashboard lights, and dome light—flicker on and off, which is especially dangerous at night when you can't see the road; this flickering gets worse when you're slowing down. Your airbag warning light stays on constantly with multiple fault codes that return shortly after being cleared, leaving the airbag system's status unclear. This likely requires comprehensive electrical system diagnosis and repair, including possible alternator replacement, wiring inspection, and airbag system troubleshooting.

You were hit by another vehicle while driving through a green light, and the other driver failed to yield. Your car sustained extensive damage to the front bumper and fender on the driver's side. Most concerning, your front and side airbags did not deploy during the collision. The airbag system should be inspected by a technician to determine why it failed to activate.

Your check engine light came on, and a mechanic diagnosed a transmission failure. You discovered after purchase that the vehicle's actual mileage (217,000 miles on the title) was significantly higher than what was shown at sale (198,000 miles), suggesting the odometer may have been rolled back. This transmission issue may require a complete transmission rebuild or replacement.
