NHTSA Campaign: 12V014000
Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
KIA MOTORS AMERICA, INC. (KIA) IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2008 KIA OPTIMA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 29, 2005, THROUGH JANUARY 29, 2008, AND MODEL YEAR 2007 AND 2008 KIA RONDO VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 13, 2006, THROUGH MARCH 21, 2008. THE CLOCK SPRING CONTACT ASSEMBLY FOR THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) MAY BECOME DAMAGED THROUGH USAGE OVER TIME. IF THE CLOCK SPRING CONTACT ASSEMBLY BECOMES DAMAGED, THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT WILL EXPERIENCE A HIGH RESISTANCE CONDITION POTENTIALLY CAUSING THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG TO NOT DEPLOY.
Risk: IF THE CLOCK SPRING DEVELOPS HIGH RESISTANCE, IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE DRIVERS AIR BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PROPERLY PROTECT THE DRIVER, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURIES.
Fix: KIA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE VEHICLE'S AIR BAG CLOCK SPRING CONTACT ASSEMBLY, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 11, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-333-4542.
NHTSA Campaign: 11V153000
Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:COLUMN SHIFT
KIA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2008 OPTIMA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 29, 2005, THROUGH JUNE 13, 2007. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE SHIFT CABLE MAY HAVE BEEN INSTALLED INCORRECTLY, CAUSING TENSION IN THE CABLE. IF PRESENT, THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE CABLE TO DETACH FROM THE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY'S DOWEL PIN PREVENTING THE TRANSMISSION FROM BEING SHIFTED. THE SHIFT LEVER CAN THEN BE MOVED INTO THE PARK (P) POSITION WHILE THE VEHICLE'S TRANSMISSION IS STILL IN THE LAST USED GEAR BEFORE DETACHMENT.
Risk: IF THE DRIVER LEAVES THE VEHICLE WITHOUT ENGAGING THE PARKING BRAKE, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE VEHICLE CAN ROLL INJURE A PERSON IN ITS PATH OR CAUSE A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE SHIFT CABLE AND REINSTALL IF NECESSARY FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 23, 2011. OWNER MAY CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 166)
Exterior Lighting →5 issues
Your headlights aren't working properly—the low beams appear to be off even when they're on, so you have to drive with high beams instead. This is causing you to fail vehicle inspection because it looks like only your parking lights are on. The issue affects all four headlights and makes it hard for other drivers to see you properly.

Your headlights are very dim, making it unsafe to drive at night—you can only see a few feet ahead. You've already replaced the bulbs, wiring harness, and alternator, but the problem persists. This may indicate an underlying electrical issue with the headlight circuit or power distribution that needs professional diagnosis.

Your headlights are dim and not providing adequate visibility at night. This makes it difficult to see the road and could be unsafe when driving in low-light conditions. The issue likely involves the headlight bulbs, wiring, or electrical connections that power them.

Your low beam headlights are dimmer than they should be. You've already tried replacing the bulbs and cleaning the outer lens, but the light output hasn't improved. When you removed the headlight assembly, you discovered rust inside the projector bowl on both sides, which reduces how well the light reflects and gets directed onto the road. The fix will likely involve replacing the entire headlight assembly with a new one.

Your brake lights stayed on even after you turned off the engine, and they wouldn't turn off normally. You had to remove the fuse to get them to stop. While there's a known recall for the brake switch on 2008 models, your 2007 wasn't included in that recall. This issue may involve replacing or adjusting the brake light switch that controls when the lights turn on and off.

Engine →2 issues
After adding oil to your engine, your car stopped while driving and smoke and fire occurred. The engine will not start now, and two mechanics have said the engine needs to be replaced. Additionally, your front A/C blower doesn't work and your console has an electrical short.

Your car began consuming large amounts of oil without visible leaks or burning, losing about 2 quarts per week. The oil pressure eventually dropped low enough to draw air into the engine, causing loud knocking sounds when accelerating or climbing hills. A diagnostic scan revealed the crankshaft timing oil control valve wasn't working properly, which damaged an engine rod and made the check engine light come on permanently. The issue likely requires replacing the timing oil control valve and inspecting the engine for rod damage.

Fuel/propulsion System →2 issues
After you fill up your car with gas, the engine won't run properly and keeps stalling for up to two days. Your car may drive for just a few seconds before dying while you're on the road. The issue appears to be related to the fuel system and may require diagnosis of the fuel pump, fuel filter, or fuel injectors.

Your catalytic converter is accumulating soot buildup, which is causing your check engine light to stay on. The garage recommends replacing it to resolve the issue. This typically involves removing the old catalytic converter and installing a new one.

Power Train,seat Belts,vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
Your car's speed fluctuates on its own and won't maintain a steady speed even when you keep steady pressure on the gas pedal. More critically, your seatbelt frequently gets stuck and won't release, making you afraid to wear it properly—you've received multiple tickets for this and have resorted to buckling it behind you. Most dangerously, your vehicle accelerated on its own while braking at low speed, causing you to crash into a pillar at a mall. A mechanic will need to diagnose the cruise control and throttle system for the speed control issue, inspect the seatbelt retractor mechanism for binding, and investigate the engine's unintended acceleration behavior.

Air Bags →1 issue
Your airbag failed to deploy during a collision, leaving you without the safety protection you should have had. This appears to be a programming defect in the airbag system. The vehicle was totaled as a result of the crash and sent to the junkyard.

Air Bags,service Brakes →1 issue
While driving at low speed, your vehicle's airbags deployed after you braked hard to avoid a car ahead. Right after the airbags inflated and then deflated, your brake pedal became soft and unresponsive, and the deflated airbag blocked your view, making it difficult to stop in time. Your vehicle collided with the car in front of you, resulting in a total loss.

Electrical System →1 issue
Your car's blinker bulbs and headlights are burning out much faster than normal—about once a month. Additionally, the wiring harness is getting extremely hot and showing signs of melting, which creates a fire hazard. This suggests a voltage regulation or grounding problem in the electrical system. A mechanic will need to test the alternator and battery charging system, and inspect the ground connections and wiring for damage.

Structure,engine →1 issue
Your engine caught fire while driving on the highway. Your daughter heard a noise and noticed the check engine and oil warning lights illuminate, and a nearby driver alerted her that flames were visible under the hood. The fire fully engulfed the engine. This will require a complete engine replacement or extensive engine rebuild.

Power Train,service Brakes,engine →1 issue
Your engine failed completely and had to be replaced with a salvage yard engine, despite seeing reports of engine recalls for your model that you were never notified about. You've also experienced rust damage to your brake lines and had disputes with the dealership about transmission service coverage. You believe the manufacturer should cover these repairs rather than leaving you responsible for the costs.

Exterior Lighting,air Bags,visibility/wiper →1 issue
Your low beam headlights aren't producing enough light to see the road clearly, even though you've already replaced the bulbs and your high beams work fine. You've found online that many 2007 Kia Optimas have this same issue, and while Kia recalled 2011 and newer models for it, your older model wasn't included. Additionally, your airbag warning light stays on continuously. The fix will likely require replacing the headlight assembly unit on one or both sides, or having the airbag system diagnosed and repaired.

Suspension,air Bags,unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your airbag warning light came on without any accident occurring. You're also noticing that your suspension feels rough over small bumps and sometimes causes the car to jump slightly when you accelerate.

Exterior Lighting,visibility/wiper →1 issue
Your headlights are extremely dim regardless of which bulb you install, making it unsafe to drive at night since you can only see about 3 feet ahead. Additionally, your visors keep falling down and blocking your view of the road. This needs attention soon as poor nighttime visibility is a serious safety concern.

Air Bags,seat Belts,visibility/wiper →1 issue
Your airbag warning light stays on constantly, and the passenger airbag light remains on even when an adult is sitting in that seat. Your sun visors won't stay up when flipped, and your headlights are very dim at night—you've tried replacing them with different types but they're still too dark to see safely. These issues may require diagnostic scanning of the airbag system, adjustment or replacement of the visor hardware, and checking your headlight wiring and electrical connections.

Air Bags,engine →1 issue
Your check engine light keeps coming on, and it now stays on with a code P0420, which indicates a problem with your catalytic converter. The light initially would turn on and off without showing any diagnostic code. You should have this checked out, as it may involve replacing or servicing your catalytic converter.
