The check-valve nipple on the gas tank of my 2011 Jeep Wrangler is broken. You can see it and smell the gas vapors leaking from this nipple. The vehicle has 86K miles. The Jeep failed our Delaware state inspection because the check engine light came on. The Jeep smells like gas and in addition to harmful vapors, it is a serious safety issue and an explosion danger. Two service stations attempted to fix this without success. The error code is P0455 for an emissions leak. The most recent service station ordered several previously-owned Jeep gas tanks but they all had this same failure. They next ordered a new gas tank from Jeep which was out of stock for several months, indicating they can not keep up with the demand for these failing nipples. When the new gas tank finally came in, this same nipple was broken and this was a brand new gas tank. If you go on line, you will see this is a common problem and a safety issue. As a former engineer for Ford Motor Company, it is clear Jeep has a design flaw that will break and cause a safety risk to customers. The material is wrong for this application, and there is not enough strain relief where this nipple is located. It will inevitably break on all Jeeps at some point in time causing this safety risk. I told the service station that there is no reason to replace the gas tank because this nipple will simply fail again. They have other Jeeps they are working on with this same problem so had no problem canceling my service request. Please address this problem with Jeep before someone is injured or killed.
Jeep wranglers have a common problem with the fuel inlet. It clogs over time then will cause fuel to spill over or click off constantly while fueling the vehicle. This gets worse in cold months. I have spilled fuel hundreds of times over the years while fueling. Jeep forums and YouTube talk about the widespread issue. No warranty or recall? Perhaps after a gas station goes up in flames
The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that the fuel pump would continuously stop while attempting to refuel the vehicle. Due to the failure, the contact could not gauge when the fuel tank was full; therefore, fuel would splash out of the tank once it reached capacity. The contact stated that fuel would splash onto her clothing or onto her face because of the failure. The contact called a dealer and the service mechanic confirmed that the failure was common and that her fuel tank would need to be replaced. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 142,000.
AUTO SHUT OFF OF GAS FILL DOES NOT WORK WHEN FILLING FUEL TANK AND GAS SPUES ALL OVER THE VEHICLE AND GROUND WHEN TANK FILLS.
WHEN FILLING UP WITH FUEL, THE GAS WILL SPIT BACK AND SPILL FUEL ON THE SIDE OF JEEP AND GROUND, EVEN AFTER THE AUTOMATIC SHUT OFF OF THE HOSE ENGAGES. HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL, MAYBE 5 DOZEN, TIMES SINCE I'VE OWNED IT. IT US WELL DOCUMENTED FROM THOUSANDS OF OWNERS OF THIS STYLE JEEP HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM.

EVERY TIME WE FILL THE GAS TANK, FUEL SPEWS/SPILLS OUT AT THE END OF PUMPING THE GAS.

THE FUEL TANK RUSTED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THE TANK WAS ON BACKORDER AND THIS WAS AN ONGOING ISSUE.
2011 JEEP SAHARA WRANGLER REFUELING PROBLEM. REFUELING GEYSER OVERFLOW PROBLEM OF GASOLINE AT WHERE NOZZLE ENTERS VEHICLE. REQUIRES MANUALLY CLICKING OFF HANDLE WHEN FUEL TANK IS COMPLETELY FULL OVERFLOWING GASOLINE ON GROUND, JEEP, AND SELF, (FUEL ON HANDS AND SHOES). THIS OVERFLOW OCCURRED JANUARY 25, 2019, FEBRUARY 11, 2019, AND MARCH 10, 2019. WE ARE THE ORIGINAL OWNERS FROM BERGLUND JEEP DODGE RAM DEALERSHIP AND THE SERVICE ADVISOR INDICATED REPAIRS WOULD NOT BE COVERED APRIL 3, 2019.

WHEN REFUELING, THE GAS DOES NOT SHUT OFF AND SPILLS OUT OF THE TANK UNTIL USER SHUTS OFF. THIS HAPPENS EACH TIME YOU REFUEL AND YOU ARE UNABLE TO FILL UP TO SHUT OFF. I HAVE SPILLED GASOLINE, ON VEHICLE, CLOTHING, GROUND, GAS PUMP, ETC. THIS IS A PRETTY SERIOUS ISSUE AND I COULD NOT FIND A RECALL. I DON'T THINK THIS SHOULD BE IGNORED. I HAD TO ADD A DATE BELOW, JUST THE LATEST TIME IT HAS BEEN AN ISSUE. IT HAS OCCURRED MULTIPLE TIMES TO MYSELF AND MY SPOUSE.
CRACK IN GAS TANK - THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED YESTERDAY WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO MY MECHANIC. THERE IS A CRACK IN THE TOP OF THE GAS TANK. MY MECHANIC SAID THAT AFTER RESEARCH IN TRYING TO GET A NEW GAS TANK, HE FOUND THAT THIS IS AN ISSUE. MOPAR HAS A SIGNIFICANT BACKORDER FOR THESE TANKS. THIS IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE AND I HOPE IT WILL BE LOOKED INTO.

IT HAPPENS AT MULTIPLE GAS STATIONS AND MULTIPLE PUMPS. PROBLEM IS WITH JEEP, NOT THE GAS PUMP HANDLE. SIMPLE GOOGLE SEARCH REVEALS A MIRIAD OF THE SAME PROBLEM. VEHICLE IS STATIONARY. NOTE: HAS HAPPENED ALOT PRACTICALLY EVERYTIME, NOT JUST THE DATE ENTERED.
MY JEEP OVERFLOWS GASOLINE EVERYTIME I FILL UP AT THE PUMP
IN JULY 2017, VEHICLE DID NOT PASS EMISSION REQUIREMENTS AT STATE INSPECTION. UPON INVESTIGATION, DETERMINATION WAS MADE THAT A PLASTIC HOSE CONNECTION ON TOP OF TANK HAD BROKEN AND THAT ENTIRE TANK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. REPLACEMENT AVAILABILITY WAS NOT A PROBLEM - OVER 100 IN STOCK LOCALLY (REALLY? THIS MUST BE A RECURRING PROBLEM!) REPLACEMENT COST, PARTS & LABOR - $1200.) FIRST REPLACEMENT HAD SAME PROBLEM AND WAS REPLACED IMMEDIATELY AT NO COST. SECOND REPLACEMENT HAS NOW DEVELOPED SAME ISSUE & AND NOW, AFTER APPROXIMATELY 6+ MONTHS MUST BE REPLACED AGAIN. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THERE HASN'T BEEN ANY ACCIDENT, OR TRAUMA OF ANY KIND TO VEHICLE. ALTHOUGH REPLACEMENT COST IS NOT TO BE IGNORED, IT IS MY CONTENTION THAT THIS OBVIOUS DESIGN FLAW CREATES A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY HAZARD. IN THE EVENT OF A ROLLOVER, GASOLINE WOULD FREE-FLOW FROM THE TANK ONTO THE MUFFLER.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 JEEP WRANGLER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE FUEL TANK TUBING FRACTURED. IN ADDITION, VAPORS ENTERED THE VEHICLE AND THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL TANK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,100. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
THERE IS FUEL CAP MESSAGE ON THE DASHBOARD. I CHANGED THE CAP AND THE MESSAGE CONTINUED. I TOOK THE RUBICON TO THE LOCAL JEEP DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL TANK AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS A HOSE THAT GOES FROM WHERE THE FUEL GETS FILLED TO THE ENGINE AND THE WHOLE TANK NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM AND A SAFETY HAZARD. THE JEEP IS NOT BEING DRIVEN RIGHT NOW DUE TO MY CONCERN. THE JEEP IS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD AND IT ONLY HAS 36K MILES. SEVERAL HUNDRED JK OWNERS HAVE REPORTED SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THEIR JKS ON A NUMBER OF INTERNET FORA ADDITIONALLY, THERE ARE SEVERAL YOU TUBE VIDEOS DOCUMENTING THIS PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM SPANS ALL MODEL YEARS OF THE JK, BOTH TWO AND FOUR DOOR. THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY. I'VE REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO JEEP AND THEY CLAIM IT'S NOT THEIR RESPONSIBILITY SINCE NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED BUT I FIND THIS TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE AND A POTENTIAL HAZARD.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 JEEP WRANGLER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE REFUELING THE VEHICLE, THERE WAS FUEL LEAKING FROM THE FUEL TANK OF THE VEHICLE. REALLY ANNOYING AND VERY DANGEROUS!! EACH TIME WE FILL UP OUR 2011 JEEP WRANGLER WITH FUEL, JUST AS THE PUMPS AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFF CLICKS, FUEL WILL BLOW OUT AND ALL OVER WHOEVER IS HOLDING THE PUMP HANDLE. THERE IS NO INDICATION THAT THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN, EXCEPT FOR THE CLICK FROM THE PUMP HANDLE A SPLIT SECOND BEFORE YOU GET DOUSED. WE CHECKED WITH OUR JEEP DEALER TO SEE IF THERE IS A RECALL, AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NOT, HOWEVER IT APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE "INLET CHECK VALVE"; A MECHANICAL ITEM THAT APPEARS TO BE DEFECTIVE, AND A SEVERE SAFETY CONCERN, BUT IS SOMEHOW NOT UNDER WARRANTEE. WE WENT ON-LINE TO RESEARCH AND FOUND SIMILAR ISSUES WITH OTHER CHRYSLER VEHICLES, INCLUDING 2007-2009 JEEP WRANGLERS. REALLY AGGRAVATING TO FIND OUT THERE HAD BEEN PREVIOUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE, CHRYSLER KNEW WHAT THE ISSUE WAS, BUT BECAUSE THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH DOCUMENTED COMPLAINTS FOR THE 2011 YEAR, IT WAS NOT CONSIDERED A REAL CONCERN

I HAVE A 2011 JEEP WRANGLER RUBICON. WHEN THE PUMP SHUTS OFF WHILE FILLING MY GAS TANK, FUEL SPRAYS OUT. THE JEEP DEALER SAYS HE HAS NEVER HEARD OF THIS HAPPENING BEFORE. MY GAS TANK OVERFLOWS AT THE PUMP EVERY TIME I RE-FUEL STARTING IN JANUARY, 2015, 5 MONTHS AFTER MY WARRANTY EXPIRED BUT WITH ONLY 22,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. THE PUMP WILL SHUT OFF WHEN FULL, THEN SHORTLY AFTER, OVERFLOW SPILLS OUT ONTO THE GROUND. THE ONLY WAY TO PREVENT THIS ISSUE IS TO GUESS WHEN IT IS GETTING CLOSE TO FULL AND STOP THE PUMP BEFORE IT IS FULL. A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF FUEL SPLASHES ON ME IF I'M TOO CLOSE, ON THE BODY, BUMPER, AND GROUND, CAUSING A DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT COULD EASILY LEAD TO A FIRE. *TR

WHEN FILLING THE CAR WITH GAS THE CAR DOES NOT SHUT THE PUMP DOWN CAUSING GASOLINE TO SHOOT OUT OF THE FUEL FILLER. *TR
DECEMBER 2013, WHEN TEMPERATURES REACHED FREEZING AND LOWER, VEHICLE STARTED OVERFLOWING DURING REFUELING. THIS OCCURRED ON EVERY REFUELING OCCURRENCE THAT THE GAS PUMP SHOULD HAVE SHUT OFF ONCE THE TANK WAS FULL. THIS OCCURRED FROM DECEMBER 2013 UNTIL MARCH 2014 WHEN I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE IN FOR MAINTENANCE. THE VAPOR CANISTER AND LEAK DETECTION PUMP FILTER WERE REPLACED. DECEMBER 2014, TEMPERATURES REACHED FREEZING AND BELOW; VEHICLE IS AGAIN OVERFLOWING DURING ALL REFUELING WHEN THE PUMP SHOULD HAVE SHUT OFF ON ITS OWN. THIS HAS OCCURRED AT MULTIPLE GAS STATIONS AND IS NOT ISOLATED TO ONE BRAND OF GASOLINE, FUELING STATION, OR STATE. ONCE THE PROBLEM BEGINS IT DOES NOT STOP WHEN TEMPERATURES INCREASE ABOVE FREEZING AND HIGHER. OBVIOUSLY THERE IS SOME KIND OF DEFECT IN THIS SYSTEM, BUT SO FAR JEEP/MOPAR HAS REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT FOR 2011 JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITEDS. *TR

FOR THE THIRD FILL-UP IN A ROW, WHEN THE PUMP SHUTS OFF AN ADDITIONAL AMOUNT OF GAS SPURTS OUT OF THE FILL UP TUBE AND DOWN THE REAR LEFT SIDE OF THE JEEP. THE JEEP IS NOT OBEYING/MONITORING THE LEVEL OF THE FUEL BEING PUMPED INTO IT AND WHEN IT RISES TO A NORMAL CUT OFF LEVEL THE JEEP IGNORES IT AND ALLOWS MORE FUEL TO ENTER THE VEHICLE. IT'S TOO LATE TO SHUT IT OFF EACH TIME. EACH TIME IT HAS DONE THIS IT BURPS UP ABOUT 1/2 A GALLON TO A GALLON OF GAS. IT'S DISCOLORING THE PLASTIC FENDER AND CAUSING A MESS. I HAVE NEVER HAD A VEHICLE DO THIS BEFORE. EVERY VEHICLE I HAVE OWNED SHUTS OFF CORRECTLY, THEY HAVE MONITORED THE FUEL INTAKE LEVEL AND SIGNALED FULL BEFORE THE OVERFLOW HAPPENS. USING MY 2011 JEEP WRANGLER (RIGHT HAND DRIVE), I DELIVER MAIL FOR THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE. WAS DELIVERING MAIL ON MY RURAL ROUTE. DATE WAS 4TH OF FEB.2014. THE PROBLEM WAS A FIRE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE WIRING HARNESS , MANY OTHER WIRES, COMPARTMENT PLASTICS ,AND GAS LINE. THE CAUSE APPEARS TO BE HOT OIL FROM THE TRANSMISSION DIPPING ONTO THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION . I ONLY SEE THAT THE FILL TUBE ON THE TRANSMISSION WAS THE LEAK. I HEARD A FIRE IGNITE , OPEN THE CAR HOOD AND SEEN THE BLACK SMOKE I THEN PUT OUT THE FIRE. IT IS NOW THE DATE-MARCH 18 ,2014. I HAVE NO SUPPORT FROM CHRYSLER CORPORATION FOR REPAIR OF MY PROBLEM. THEIR INVESTIGATION STATED AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE INCIDENT FOUND NO MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT CAUSED THE INCIDENT ON 2-3-2014. I HAVE NOW TURNED THIS OVER TO MY CAR INSURANCE COMPANY . THEY SAY I SHOULD USE THE LEMON LAW. THIS VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED FOR A BAD TRANSMISSION IN NOV. OF 2013. I DO NOT SEE WHY I SHOULD OF HAD MORE PROBLEMS. THE INSURANCE COMPANY COST TO REPAIR IS $5000. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND NO ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT GRASS WAS WEDGED BETWEEN THE FUEL TANK AND BODY OF THE VEHICLE. AS A RESULT, THE GRASS CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,200. ...UPDATED 08-03-12 *BF
