FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty vehicles. The fuel tanks in these vehicles are at risk of failure and leakage in certain rear impacts.
Fix: Owners may take their vehicles to dealers and the dealers will perform a free inspection of the rear structure. On vehicles in the recall that are not equipped with a tow hitch, Chrysler will install a Chrysler designed tow hitch free of charge, provided the condition of the vehicle can support proper installation. On vehicles in the recall that are equipped with an aftermarket tow hitch, Chrysler will assess whether the hitch and surrounding areas show evidence of sharp edges or other puncture risks. If so, Chrysler will replace the tow hitch with a Chrysler designed tow hitch free of charge, provided the condition of the vehicle can support proper installation. On vehicles already equipped with a Chrysler designed tow hitch, Chrysler will inspect the area around the tow hitch installation, and if any installation issues are identified, they will be repaired free of charge. The recall began on August 1, 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign numbers are N45 (for the Grand Cherokee vehicles) and N46 (for the Liberty vehicles).

NAPA AND CARTER REPLACEMENT FUEL PUMPS MANUFACTURED BY OTD, INC., AND DISTRIBUTED BY FEDERAL MOGAL, MAY HAVE AN IMPROPERLY INSTALLED CHECK VALVE. THE PART NUMBERS OF THESE PUMPS ARE P74697M AND P74708M. THEY WERE MANUFACTURED BETWEEN JULY 15 AND 27, 2002. THEY ARE FOR USE AS AFTERMARKET REPLACEMENT PARTS ONLY ON MODEL YEAR (MY)1995 AND 1996 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE VEHICLES. THIS RECALL DOES NOT INVOLVE THE DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION OR ANY OF ITS PRODUCTS.

MY ISSUES RELATES TO EXISTING RECALL # N45/ NHTSA 13V-252. THE RECALL INDICATES THAT VEHICLES WITHOUT A HITCH WILL HAVE A HITCH INSTALLED BY THE DEALER OR IF A HITCH WAS INSTALLED AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS SOLD THEN CHRYSLER WILL PROVIDE REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE COST. MY QUESTION IS...WHAT ABOUT THE ORIGINAL OWNERS THAT PURCHASED THE VEHICLE WITH THE HITCH AS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT? WHY ARE THEY (WE) EXCLUDED FROM ANY REIMBURSEMENT? I RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL NOTICE FROM CHRYSLER CONCERNING GAS TANK PROBLEMS. I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT AND TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER. THEY WERE TO INSTALL A TRAILER HITCH TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THEY CALLED AND SAID THEY COULD NOT DO THE WORK BECAUSE THE BUMPER WAS NOT IN LINE AS IT APPARENTLY BEEN HIT. I WAS TOLD NEEDED TO PAY TO FIX THIS BEFORE THEY WOULD DO THE WORK. THE CAR IS 19 YEARS OLD AND CHRYSLER ALLOWED US TO DRIVE IT WITHOUT US KNOWING ABOUT THE EXISTING DEFECT. I RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL NOTICE # N45/NHTSA 13V-252. THIS NOTICE EXPLAINS THAT THE FUEL TANK ON MY VEHICLE HAS A CHANCE OF EXPERIENCING A FUEL LEAK DURING CERTAIN TYPES OF REAR END COLLISIONS. CHRYSLER IS SUPPOSED TO INSPECT MY VEHICLE AND INSTALL AN ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURER (OEM) TRAILER HITCH WHERE APPROPRIATE, FREE OF CHARGE ( PARTS AND LABOR ). MY CAR DOES NOT HAVE A TRAILER HITCH SO THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE. I HAVE CALLED THE LOCAL CHRYSLER DEALER IN MY AREA - ROCKLAND CHRYSLER JEEP ON ROUTE 304 IN NANUET, NEW YORK 10954 - SEVERAL TIMES. FIRST CALL WHEN I RECEIVED THE RECALL NOTICE - SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, I WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS NOTHING FOR ME TO DO AT THIS TIME, SOMEONE WOULD CONTACT ME. NO ONE EVER DID. I CALLED THE CHRYSLER GROUP RECALL ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1 800 853 1403; I GAVE THEM MY VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER AND ASKED FOR AN UPDATE ON THE RECALL AS I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY HAZARD TO ME AND MY FAMILY. I WAS TOLD THAT MY INFORMATION WAS NOTED AND I SHOULD BE HEARING FROM THE LOCAL CHRYSLER DEALER. I AM STILL WAITING. SEVERAL WEEKS PASSED, NO ONE FROM THE LOCAL DEALER OR CHRYSLER CORP. CONTACTED ME. I CALLED ROCKLAND CHRYSLER AND MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR MY CAR TO BE INSPECTED BY THEIR TECHNICIANS. I FURTHER REQUESTED THAT THE SAFETY CONCERN NOTED IN THIS RECALL BE DOCUMENTED BY ROCKLAND CHRYSLER. I WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO LEAVE THE CAR WITH THEM FOR SEVERAL HOURS BECAUSE THE INSPECTION WAS SOMEWHAT INVOLVED. TWO DAYS BEFORE MY APPOINTMENT, ROCKLAND CHRYSLER CALLED AND TOLD ME THEY HAD TO CANCEL MY APPOINTMENT BECAUSE THE PARTS WERE ON BACK ORDER. I ASKED FOR AN E T A ON THE PARTS, WAS TOLD THEY DID NOT KNOW - "BACK ORDERED". MY COMPLAINT IS THAT THERE IS AN UNRESOLVED SERIOUS SAFETY DEFECT THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED NOW. CHRYSLER CORP. THE FUEL TANK HAS TWO STRUCTURAL STRAPS TO ENSURE THE TANK IS SAFELY ATTACHED TO THE FRAME. ASSUMING BOTH STRAPS ARE FABRICATED TO THE SAME SPECIFICATIONS BOTH SHOULD BE IN, MORE OR LESS, THE SAME CONDITION AS THEY ARE LOCATED NEXT TO EACH AND EXPERIENCE THE SAME LEVEL OF WEAR AND TEAR. MY VEHICLE HAS ONE STRAP THAT IS IN FINE CONDITION. THE SECOND STRAP HAS RUSTED THROUGH AND NO LONGER PROVIDES THE DESIGNED SUPPORT FOR THE FUEL TANK. CHRYSLER'S POSITION IS THIS IS DUE TO WEAR AND TEAR AND REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE DISPARITY BETWEEN THE CONDITION OF EACH STRAP. CHRYSLER HAS HAD ISSUES WITH THESE STRAPS. JUST OVER A YEAR AGO, MY 1996 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO ENCOUNTERED A DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP. AS I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF PROCURING A REPLACEMENT PUMP, A FRIEND TOLD ME TO CHECK FOR RECALLS/TSB'S ON IT AS HE HAD EXPERIENCED MANY FUEL PUMP PROBLEMS WITH THESE. THERE WERE, I BELIEVE TWO TSB'S INVOLVING MY VEHICLE SO I CALLED CHRYSLER. THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP TO DETERMINE IF THE PROBLEM WAS THE PUMP. I TOLD HER I HAD ALREADY DONE THAT. SHE TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD TO DETERMINE IT AND IF IT WAS THE PUMP, CHRYSLER WOULD COVER THE REPAIR. I HAD IT TOWED TO CHRYSLER ($65) AND THEY INDEED FOUND IT WAS A DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP AND REPLACED IT AND I WAS CHARGED OVER $600 FOR THE REPAIR. AFTER THE FACT, CHRYSLER DECLINED TO PAY FOR WHAT THEY PROMISED. I HAD FOUND A REPLACEMENT PUMP THAT I WAS PREPARED TO INSTALL MYSELF FOR $163 AND HAD CHRYSLER BEEN HONEST AND DECLINED TO COVER THE REPAIR, I WOULD HAVE ACCOMPLISHED IT MYSELF FOR $163 AND BEEN ABLE TO GO ON VACATION TO THE OUTER BANKS INSTEAD OF PAYING ALMOST $700 AND HAVING TO CANCEL MY VACATION. REPLACED FUEL PUMP 5 MORE TIMES IN THE PAST 2 MONTHS AND HAVE BEEN NOTICING A STRONG PETROL SMELL. LAST TIME THE MECHANICS TOLD ME TO PICK UP THE JEEP IT WOULDN'T EVEN START AND THE PETROL SMELL CONTINUED. NOW TOLD BY MANAGER AT THE CHRYSLER SHOP THAT AN INTERNAL MEMO WAS ISSUED IN 1997 STATING THAT 1996 CHEROKEES HAD ALREADY STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL SYSTEM, INCLUDING FAULTY FUEL PUMP SYSTEMS AND CORRODED FUEL TANKS. THEY SAID THAT THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO OTHER THAN REPLACE THE FUEL TANK AT MY COST. CHRYSLER IS HOLDING TRUE TO CHARACTER AND INSISTS THAT A JEEP WITH SO MANY MILES (IT'S A '96 WITH ONLY 58K MILES) WILL HAVE LOTS OF PROBLEMS. THEY DO NOT SEEM TO THINK IT IS STRANGE THAT SUCH A MEMO WAS ISSUED DETAILING CORROSION IN THE TANKS OF A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF '96 JEEPS ONLY ONE YEAR AFTER MANUFACTURING DATE. ONLY MAJOR BRAND GASOLINE HAS BEEN USED IN THIS VEHICLE. A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED ON THIS PROBLEM AS IT COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT IF THE ENGINE STALLED DUE TO FUEL FAILURE. THE HPTP FUEL TANK CAUSE FOUR FUEL PUMPS TO BE REPLACED IN FIVE WEEKS. CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE IS AWARE OF THE DELAMINATION PROBLEM WHICH CAUSES PARTICLES TO CLOG THE FILTER AND INCREASE PRESSURE CAUSING THE PUMPS TO FAIL. CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE REPORTED THAT THE INCIDENT COUNT DIDN'T JUSTIFY A RECALL. THE COST OF REPAIRS TO DATE IS APPROXIMATELY $900.00. *AK

GEAR INDICATOR SHOWED IT WAS IN REVERSE. DEALER SUGGESTED CONSUMER MIGHT HAVE HAD VEHICLE SERVICED, AND WRONG TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS USED. THEN, TWO MONTHS LATER, I WAS PARKED IN PARK IN FRONT OF OUR FARM GATE, MOTOR RUNNING, WHEN I HOPPED OUT TO GET THE MAIL FROM THE BOX ACROSS THE LANE. AS I STARTED TO LEAVE THE OPEN DOOR, THE CAR STARTED TO MOVE FROM THE STOPPED POSITION IN REVERSE. I RAN ALONGSIDE AND JUMPED BACK IT AND STOMPED ON THE BRAKE. IT WAS THIS TIME THAT I LOOKED AT THE GEAR SHIFT AND NOTED THAT IT HAD MOVED FROM THE PARK POSITION TO A PLACE JUST ABOVE THE R FOR REVERSE BUT INDEED WAS IN REVERSE! MY BODY SHOP PERSON HAD INFORMED ME OF ANOTHER JEEP OWNER WHO WAS PINNED AGAINST HIS GARAGE DOOR WHEN HIS JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE WENT FROM PARK INTO REVERSE. I CAN GET HIM TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THIS ORGANIZATION. THE DEALERS RESPONSE TO ME WAS "I PROPBABLY DID NOT HAVE IT IN GEAR PROPERLY AND DID I HAVE THE PARKING BRAKE ON?" BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY.....I SURE PUT IT ON NOW AND CHECK IT DOUBLE BUT SURE DON'T TRUST IT ENOUGH TO IDLE IN PARK......ALTHOUGH AFTER DRIVING FOR 35 YEARS I HAVE NEVER HAD THE PROBLEM WITH OTHER CARS OR TRUCKS! THE FUEL PUMP HAD EVIDENTLY BEEN A PROBLEM FOR THEM AS THE DEALER SAID THAT THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL FAILURES "BUT NO RECALL" THE PUMP HAS TO BE REPLACED BY FACTORY PART AT $500 PLUS DOLLARS WITH AN ADDITIONAL $700.00 FOR LABOR TO INSTALL "AND EVEN THEN, WE CAN'T GUARANTEE IT BUT FOR 6 MONTHS! THANKS TO THE LA TIMES FOR THE ARTICLE ON THE JEEP REVERSE PROBLEM AND I WILL BET YOU THAT THERE ARE MORE THAN A "SMALL' NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS ISSUE.*AK

POSSIBLE CHEMICAL IMBALANCE IN THE FUEL TANK MAY HAVE CAUSED SLUDGE IN THE TANK WHICH IN TURNED CAUSED THE FUEL PUMP TO GO BAD ON THREE OCCASION RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE NOT STARTING, THE DEALER REPLACED THE TANK AND THE FUEL PUMP ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. NLM

VEHICLE HAD FIVE FUEL PUMPS REPLACED, 3 BY AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP, AND 2 BY DEALER. ALL PARTS WERE FROM THE DEALER AUTO PARTS. MANUFACTURER NOTIFIED, AND INFORMED CONSUMER THAT PROBLEM MAY HAV E OCCURRED FROM CONTAMINATION IN FUEL TANK WHICH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. FEEL FREE TO PROVIDE ANY FURTHER DETAILS ON THIS MATTER. *AK

THIS PARTICULAR MODEL WAS SUPPOSE TO COME FROM THE MANUFACTURER WITH A PLASTIC FUEL TANK. FOR SOME REASON MINE CAME WITH A METAL FUEL TANK THAT CORRODED VERY QUICKLY, BEYOND WHAT WOULD NORMALLY BE EXPECTED FOR YEAR AND MILEAGE.THIS CORROSION LED TO THE FAILURE OF THE ORIGINAL FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY AND THE FAILURE OF THE REPLACEMENT FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY. THE AAA PERSON WHO TOWED MY VEHICLE MENTIONED THAT HE HAS TOWED A NUMBER OF JEEP CHEROKEES WITH THE SAME PROBLEM.
THE FUEL PUMP HAS BEEN REPLACED FOUR TIMES AND IT HAS FAILED AGAIN AND WILLBE TOWED TO THE DEALERS TOMORROW 11/3/00. THE DEALER HAS TOLD US IT WILL COST US $900.00 TO REPLACE IT AGAIN. PLEASE LET US KNOW WHAT RECOURSE WE SHOULD PROCEED WITH. *AK

CONSUMERS CAR FUEL PUMP FAILED AND CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO START CAR FUEL HAD LEAKED. TO TO DEALER AND THEY REPLACED PUMP AND IT BROKE AGAIN. DLR TOLD CONSUMER WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE WHOLE FUEL TANK.

THE MAIN FUEL LINE WAS TOO LONG AND CHAFFED AND MELTED, UNNOTICES, ON TOP OF THE REAR END GEAR BOX. THE LARGE AMOUNTS OF FUEL WAS LEAKING OVER THE HOT GEAR REAR GEAR BOX AND SPLASHING ONTO THE HOT MEFFLER.
FUEL PUMP WENT OUT. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME IN SIX MONTHS THAT THE FUEL PUMP WENT. *AK
WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE CAR BACKFIRES AND POPS, EXCESSIVE FUEL IS GOING THROUGH THE EXHAUST SYSTEM AND IGNITING THE PIPES/FIRE UNDER THE CAR. *AK
