THIS WAS MANY YEARS AGO, BUT WITH THE INVESTIGATION INTO ENGINE'S UNEXPECTEDLY SHUTTING DOWN WHILE DRIVING I THOUGHT I SHOULD REPORT. THE JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE WAS A '96 OR '97, NOT SURE ANYMORE. I WAS DRIVING ON A MAJOR ROAD, NOT A HIGHWAY BUT WHERE YOU COULD TRAVEL IN THE 40'S AND THE ENGINE TOTALLY SHUT DOWN. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO A DEALER AND HE COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. IT HAPPENED AGAIN, THIS TIME AT A SLOWER SPEED. BROUGHT IT BACK THE DEALER AND AGAIN THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I REFUSED TO TAKE THE CAR BACK UNTIL THEY FOUND AND REPAIRED. HE ASKED IF HE COULD DRIVE IT HOME, HOPING TO REPLICATE ISSUE, HE DIDN'T EVEN MAKE IT OUT OF THE PARKING LOT. THIS WAS A DEALER IN TAMPA, FL, SO HOPEFULLY THERE IS A RECORD OF WHAT THEY FOUND. IT DID NOT HAPPEN AGAIN, BUT WE SOLD THE CAR SHORTLY AFTER. *TR

MY WIFE, [XXX] WAS DRIVING DOWN I 75 AT 70 MPH AND THE VEHICLE JUST WENT DEAD. SHE COASTED OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND STOPPED. SHE PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK, TRY TO START THE VEHICLE SEVERAL TIMES, FEARING THE BATTERY WOULD RUN DOWN. THE VEHICLE FINALLY CRANKED, THE VEHICLE STARTED FINE FOR A COUPLE WEEKS AND WENT DEAD IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC IN DALTON, GA. THE VEHICLE WAS PUSHED TO THE SIDE AND AGAIN SHE SPENT APP. 5 MINUTES, WITH SEVERAL TRIES AND THE VEHICLE FINALLY STARTED. THE VEHICLE HAS STOPPED ON I 75 SEVERAL TIMES MORE. VERY DANGEROUS. THE VEHICLE HAS ALSO REFUSED TO START TWICE AT FIRST, AFTER SETTING FOR A COUPLE HOURS WHILE [XXX] WENT IN SHOPPING. THE VEHICLE DID START. TODAY THE VEHICLE WAS SETTING AT HOME AFTER RIDDING AROUND TOWN FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS AND REFUSED TO START RUNNING THE BATTERY DOWN. I PLACED A CHARGER ON THE BATTERY, GOT A 25% CHARGE AND THE VEHICLE STARTED. THE VEHICLE STARTS EASY, WHEN IT STARTS. THE VEHICLE FOR THE MOST PART IS A GOOD VEHICLE, BUT I AM AFRAID, THIS ISSUE IS GOING TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. CAN YOU HELP. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 142,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 151,000.

CAR STALLS WHILE DRIVING WITH NO WARNING. STALLS ON FREEWAY OR IN CITY DRIVING. THIS IS AN INFAMOUS MANUFACTURING DEFECT ON 96 JEEPS. VERY HAZARDOUS BECAUSE ENGINE CUTS OUT COMPLETELY WHILE IN MOTION. REQUIRES PULLING OVER WITH ENGINE NOT RUNNING TO RESTART ENGINE. JEEP THEN WILL REPEATEDLY DIE AFTER RE-STARTING. SINCE ENGINE DIES WHILE IN MOTION, CARS BEHIND ARE IN REAL DANGER OF COLLIDING WITH MY VEHICLE. THIS ISSUE IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIX WITH NORMAL MECHANICAL PROBLEM-SOLVING. JEEP HAS BEEN STALLING FOR 2 YEARS AT LEAST. STALLS UNDER ALL CONDITIONS, IDLE, HIGH SPEED, COLD OR HOT OUTSIDE TEMP. RECENTLY THE PAST MONTH IT IS STALLING CONSTANTLY AT THE RATE OF 2-5 TIMES PER DAY, AVERAGE MILEAGE 25 MILES PER DAY. STALLS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS ARE BAD, AND IN TRAFFIC CAN BE DEADLY. RESEARCH ON JEEP TECHNICAL SITES FINDS IDENTICAL PROBLEMS BEING TRACED TO FAILURE OF POWER CONTROL MODULE PCM, SOMETIMES ALSO REFERRED TO AS ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM). *TT
THIS IS A COMMONLY KNOWN DEFECT WITH THESE JEEPS WHICH HAS NEVER BEEN ADEQUATELY ADDRESSED BY THE NHTSA. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET KILLED IF THE MANUFACTURER IS NOT HELD RESPONSIBLE. INFAMOUS STALLING PROBLEM. WHETHER GOING 10 MPH OR 70 MPH, VEHICLE WILL STALL WITH NO WARNING. GENERALLY WILL RE-START AFTER TURNING OFF IGNITION, BUT NOT ALWAYS IMMEDIATELY. I HAVE HAD THE COMPUTER MODULE WIRING HARNESS REWORKED. STILL STALLS, AND I HAVE BEEN FORCED TO PARK THE JEEP FOR SAFETY REASONS. *TR

THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 206,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 209,000.

SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WAS INSPECTED AND PCM WAS REPROGRAMMED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE REPROGRAMMING. SHE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT ASSIST HER. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THIS TIME. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 138,380. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 129,900.

VEHICLE WAS LOOSING POWER, CUTTING OUT AND DYING. WHILE ACCELERATING OR DRIVING AT A CONSTANT SPEED IT WOULD CUT OUT. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD TURN ON BUT SOMETIMES THE READING WOULD BE LOST BY THE TIME IT WENT TO MECHANIC. CRANK SHAFT SENSOR WAS REPLACED WITH A NAPA BRAND. STILL THE PROBLEM KEPT HAPPENING. SEVERAL OTHER PARTS WERE REPLACED OVER 3 YEARS TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT. FINALLY IN MARCH 07 THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE CRANK SHAFT SENSOR AGAIN BUT WITH A FACTORY PART. HAVEN'T HAD ANY PROBLEMS SINCE. I AM UPSET BECAUSE I HAD TO PAY FOR A PART TO BE PREPLACED TWICE PLUS OTHERS, EXCEEDING $1000 BECAUSE THE AFTER MARKET PART WASN'T COMPATIBLE WITH MY VEHICLE. EITHER NAPA NEEDS TO STOP MAKING THIS PART OR JEEP NEEDS TO LET CONSUMERS KNOW THAT THIS PARTICULAR PART WON'T WORK. HAVE READ REPORTS OF OTHER VEHICLES HAVING SAME PROBLEM. I UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THE ( 1996 AND NEWER JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE )EXHAUST MANIFOLD. THEY DEVELOP AN EXHAUST LEAK, WHERE THE WELD OF THE 2 EXHAUST PIPES OFF OF THE ENGINE MEET THE FLANGE ( LEAK AT WELD OF FLANGE ) FOR THE TRANSFER TO A SINGLE EXHAUST PIPE. I'VE JUST HAD A RECALL COMPLETED BY JEEP BECAUSE OF THE RATTLE IN THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER, WHICH I WAS TOLD POSED AN EMISSIONS QUESTION, BUT THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD LEAK POSSES A MUCH LARGER PROBLEM NOT ONLY WITH EXHAUST LEAK OF HOT GASES OF CO, AND THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. *JB
I HAVE A 1996 PRE-OWNED JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON ITS CATYLIC CONVERTER AT LEAST A YEAR AGO. I HAD CALLED AGAIN TO HAVE MY CAR ON THE LIST. MOST RECENTLY, I CALLED ABOUT A MONTH AGO IN FEBRUARY TO DEALERSHIP. THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY ONLY RECEIVED THE BACK-ORDER PART ONCE EVERY 3 WEEKS IF THEY WERE LUCKY. WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE RATTLING NOISE. WELL, LAST WEEK MY CAR HAD TWO EPISODES OF SHUDDERING WHILE AT A COMPLETE STOP. THIS WEEK, MY ENGINE CCHECK LIGHT HAS BEEN ON FOR AT LEAST TWO DAYS. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS COULD VERY MUCH BE DUE TO THE CONVERTER BY A SERVICE PERSON. MY CAR WAS ALREADY AT A CRITICALSTAGE OF NEEDING THE REPLACEMENT. I COULD NOT AFFORD TO WAIT UNTIL MY ENGINE NEEDED REPLACING. SO WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE ?*AK
ENGINE CUTS OUT OR HAS DIFFICULTY STARTING. PERIODICALLY(COULD BE MORE THAN ONCE A DAY) THE MOTOR TURNS OVER BUT WILL NOT START AS IT NORMALLY SHOULD. OFTEN HAVE TO WAIT APPROACH. 10 MINUTES AND WILL START. OFTEN AFTER ONLY A FEW MINUTES. ALSO, WHILE DRIVING ALONG AT HIGH SPEED THE ENGINE WILL CUT OUT AND MAY RESTART IMMEDIATELY(SECONDS) AND OCCASIONALLY MUST PULL OFF OF HIGHWAY AND WAIT A FEW MINUTES BEFORE IT WILL RESTART. ON AUGUST 25, 2006 THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR A CATALYTIC CONVERTER PROBLEM. THE RECALL WAS NOT IN THE NHTSA DATABASE. THE CONTACT SENT THE BILLING INFORMATION TO THE MANUFACTURER, WHO DENIED REIMBURSEMENT BECAUSE THE WORK WAS DONE AFTER THE RECALL. HAD A MICHIGAN CERTIFIED MECHANIC REPLACE THE PART WITH A NEW GENUINE JEEP EXHAUST MANIFOLD PART. NEW PART TODAY IS FAILING AGAIN. MECHANIC EXPLAINED PART BREAKS DOWN FROM HEAT/COLD EXPANSIONS AND WHEN THE EXHAUST IS REMOVED THE PART IS IN PIECES. I AM SENDING THIS COMPLAINT AS THERE ARE NO RECALLS FROM CHRYSLER ON A PART THAT IS IMPORTANT RELATING TO ENGINE EXHAUST THAT CANNOT BE CHANNEL THROUGH THE EXHAUST PIPES SAFELY SINCE THE MANIFOLD IS BEING MADE TO BREAK DOWN WITHIN A TWO YEAR PERIOD. THE MANIFOLD LISTS FOR $431 AND THEY SAY ABOUT $200 TO PUT ONE IN. PLUS, I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IT'S NO GOOD TO FIX THE ONE FROM THE MANUFACTURER BY WELDING IT, BECAUSE IT WILL CRACK AGAIN. THE SUGGESTION I AM GETTING IS TO BUY A NEW AFTERMARKET MANIFOLD...ALL THE MECHANICS SAY THEY WORK BETTER BECAUSE THEY HAVE 2 PIECES ON THEM THAT GIVE FOR EXTRA SUPPORT. I THINK THIS IS REALLY SAD. THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE COMMON AMONG GRAND CHEROKEE OWNERS WITH THE 6 CYLINDER, 4 L ENGINE. THE MANIFOLD FAILED DUE TO A STRESS CRACK THAT DEVELOPED FROM UNEVEN EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION DURING NORMAL OPERATION. THE LOCAL JEEP/CHRYSLER DEALER INFORMED ME THAT THE PART FAILS IN ALMOST ALL 6 CYLINDER JEEP CHEROKEES AND THAT THE PRESENT REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE REDESIGNED NOT TO BREAK FROM STRESS CRACKS FROM NORMAL HEATING. THIS TELLS ME THAT THE MANUFACTURER KNOWS OF THE SAFETY PROBLEM, HAS REDESIGNED IT, AND IS TRYING TO MAKE MONEY OFF THE SAFETY FAILURE. THE REPLACEMENT EXPENSE FOR THIS SAFETY INSPECTION FAILURE IS VERY HIGH. ESTIMATED COST OF THE REPLACING THE DEFECTIVE MANIFOLD BY THE DEALER IS $1100 TO $1200. I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM AND THAT A GREAT PERCENTAGE OF GRAND CHEROKEES WITH THE 6 CYL., 4 L., ENGINE EXPERIENCED A SAFETY DEFECT FROM A CRACKED EXHAUST MANIFOLD. APPARENTLY SOME FAILURE OCCURED WITH THE JEEP THAT CAUSED SMOKE TO ENTER THROUGH THE VENTILATION SYSTEM. THE COMPARTMENT FILLED WITH SMOKE. THE SMOKE HAD AN ARROMA OF ELECTRICITY. EVERYTHING THAT CONSUMER HAD RUNNING SUCH AS THE BLOWER MOTOR/AC WERE TURNED OFF. MRCONSUMER FEELS THE VEHICLE DESIGN ALLOWED DEBRIS TO ENTER THE AIR CONDITIONING AIR BOX AND COME INTO CONTACT WITH THE BLOWER RESISTOR. THIS CAUSED THE DEBRIS TO IGNITE FORM THE HEAT SOURCE, ALSO THE ENGINE GASKET WAS LEAKING OIL. *JG

THE SHEARING OF THE RIGHT ENGINE MOUNT TO ENGINE BOLTS COULD HAVE ALLOWED THE ENGINE TO DROP DOWN ONTO THE STEERING MECHANISM THEREBY CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL. DUE THE THE ENGINE DROPPPING DOWN ON THE RIGHT SIDE, THE REAR TRANSMISION MOUNT WAS TORN FROM THE CROSS MEMBER AND THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTED RIGHT WHICH COULD HAVE CAUSED A DRIVE SHAFT DISCONNECTION. I DON'T KNOW IF THE ENGINE SHIFT COULD HAVE IMPACTED THE THROTTLE LINKAGE. THIS SHEARING OF THE 3 MOUNTING BOLTS WAS NOT CAUSED BY NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR AS THE BOLTS FAILED SIMULTANEOUSLY. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE BOLTS WERE NOT SUFFICIENTLY HARDENED, OR POSSIBLY OVER TIGHTENED AT ASSEMBLY CAUSING PREMATURE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS ESSENTIALLY DISABLED AND THE ONLY THING KEEPING THE ENGINE IN PLACE WAS THE DISTRIBUTOR LANDING ON THE CHASIS MOUNT HANGER.

I CROSSED A RAILROAD TRACK AT APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH AND CAME TO A STOP APPROXIMATELY 1 BLOCK AWAY. AS SOON AS I APPLIED THE ACCELERATOR, A LOUD BANG AND THE SOUND OF "DRAGGING A MUFFER" OCCURED. I IMMEDIATLEY PULLED OVER AND DISCOVERED THAT THE SHROUD AROUND THE PRIMARY FAN WAS BROKEN INTO MANY PIECES. I TOOK THE JEEP TO THE DEALER THE NEXT DAY THEY WERE OPEN (OCCURED ON A SATURDAY) AND WAS TOLD THAT THE 3 BOLTS SECURING THE RIGHT ENGINE MOUNT TO THE BLOCK HAD SHEARED CAUSING THE ENGINE TO FALL SEVERAL INCHES. THIS REQUIRES REMOVING THE ENGINE TO DRILL AND TAP THE THREE HOLES TO INSTALL A NEW BOLTS. DIAMLER-CHRYLSER IS WILLING TO PAY FOR THE BOLTS BUT NOT THE $1000 LABOR. THE JEEP HAS NEVER BEEN OFF ROAD AND MAINTAINED EXCELLENTLY.

I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY PROBLEM, I HAVE NEVER HAD A MOTOR MOUNT BREAK AND LEAVE AN ENGINE HANGING, I HAVE NEVER HAD A MOTOR MOUNT BREAK AT 47,000 MILES. WHEN HITTING A BUMP AT 35 MILES AN HOUR CAR MADE A NOISE WHICH SOUNDED LIKE THE MUFFLER FELL OFF. LOOKING AT ENGINE, IT WAS TILTED AND SITTING ON DISTRIBUTOR. MECHANIC HAD NEVER SEEN ANYTING LIKE IT. *AK
MULTIPLE REAR AXLE PROBLEMS, EACH DIAGNOSED BY OWNER PRIOR TO FAILURE. (THE DEALER DIDN'T WANT TO ADMIT THERE WAS A PROBLEM) THIS VEHICLE HAS AVERAGED ONE NEW REAR AXLE EVERY YEAR, INCLUDING THIS YEAR WHICH I AM WAITING ON PARTS. THE ENGINE'S FAULTY MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR QUIT OPERATION WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS ON SOME SWITCHBACK ROADS. THE ENGINE ABRUBTLY QUIT RUNNING, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO LOOSE STEERING AND BRAKING CONTROL. ONLY QUICK THINKING BY USING THE PARKING BRAKE SAVED THE FOUR PEOPLE IN THE VEHICLE FROM EMINENT DEATH. THE ENGINE RELUCTANTLY RESTARTED AFTER A FEW SECONDS AND WE CONTINUED DOWN THE MOUNTAINS. HOWEVER, A FEW MINUTES LATER THE ENGINE DIED WITHOUT WARNING FOR A SECOND TIME AND WE WERE FORCED TO HOLD THE JEEP ON THE MOUNTAINSIDE WITH THE PARKING BRAKE ENGAGED. I CAN'T BELIEVE NO ONE HAS DIED FROM THIS VEHICLE! THIS SITUATION HAS OCCURED ON TWO SEPARATE TRIPS, APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR APART, AFTER REPROGRAMMING THE ENGINE MANAGEMENT COMPUTER, AND REPLACING THE MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR AND REMAPPING THE ENGINE MANAGEMENT COMPUTER FOR A SECOND TIME. THREE ENGINE MOUNT BOLTS SNAPPED AT ONCE WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH ON PALISADES PARKWAY IN NEW JERSEY. THERE WAS NO WARNING (VIBRATING ENGINE, NOISE, ETC) BEFORE BOLTS SNAPPED. ACCORDING TO MY MECHANIC, THIS IS THE SECOND JEEP CHEROKEE HE HAS SEEN WITH THIS PROBLEM. SINCE THERE IS RELATIVELY LOW MILEAGE ON THE JEEP, AND SINCE I DO NOT DRIVE IT OFF ROAD, THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING. THE ONLY REASON THE ENGINE REMAINED IN THE CAR WAS DUE TO THE DISTRIBUTAR CAP. IT TOOK 4 TITANIUM DRILL BITS TO REMOVE ALL THREE SNAPPED BOLTS. WERE IT NOT FOR MY DISTRIBUTOR CAP, THIS PROBLEM COULD HAVE CAUSE A MAJOR ACCIDENT ON A MAJOR NEW JERSEY HIGHWAY.

WHEN THE MOTOR MOUNT COLLAPSED IT CHIPPED AWAY AT THE SURFACE OF THE ENGINE BLOCK. THE SECOND TIME THE MOTOR MOUNT BOLTS CAME OUT COMPLETELY AND THE ENGINE FELL TO THE SIDE AGAIN THIS TIME WEDGING FAN INTO THE RADIATOR. THE FIRST TIME THE DEALERSHIP REPAIRED THE MOTOR MOUNTS, BUT OBVIOUSLY DID NOT DO A GOOD ENOUGH JOB, IN ORDER THE KEEP THE MOTOR MOUNT SECURE.
