ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2017-2018 Jeep Compass vehicles. The brightness of the backlighting for the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) cannot be adjusted. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 101, "Controls and Displays."

Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update IPC software, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began December 8, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T70.

The wiring harness under your front wheel well has severely corroded, causing wires to disconnect from fuse connections. While driving on the highway with a child in the car, your vehicle suddenly jerked, dashboard lights flashed (including the airbag warning light), and the engine shut off completely and wouldn't restart. When attempting to jump-start the vehicle, the loose corroded wires sparked and came close to catching fire. The corroded wiring box will need to be inspected, cleaned, repaired, or replaced, and any damaged wires reconnected or rewired.

Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2017 Jeep Compass. The contact had traded a prior vehicle for the Jeep. The vehicle was a private sale. The following day, the mileage jumped nearly 40,000 miles. At the time of purchase, the mileage was 110,246 and the next day the mileage was 154,085. Since owning the vehicle, the contact stated that the mileage had gone back and forth between the two mileages. The contact obtained a vehicle history report online, which confirmed that there was a mileage discrepancy. The vehicle history report showed that on December 12, 2025, the mileage was 177,382.

Let me start by saying I am an electrician. I have had several electrical problems with this car, most recently my Headlights come on intermittently. I start my car and turn the headlight switch on, sometimes it takes up to 20 minutes for them to kick on. I have checked the batteries, the Fuses, the grounding connections, and the switch. This is very dangerous, and I have already spent money trying to fix the problem to no avail. I travel a lot and It's frightening when it gets dark and I have to switch the headlights on while driving. I have no way of knowing if they are working while I'm on the road. I see several other people complaing of the same exact problem, why hasn't a recall been issued?

The defrost system built into the front windsheild shorted out. This issue resulted in sparking and smoking inside of the car while the front electrical defrost was turned on. This issue could have easily resulted in catastrophic events had we not realized exactly what was happening. There were no warnings of the sytem being in failure. The issue is also apparently not covered under the vehicle warranty and now will cost out of pocket to replace something that I had no control over. The dealership was able to confirm the issue.

Two times while driving the car shuts completely down, No acceleration, no warning lights, hard to steer. Both times luckily I was on a low traffic road. After it completely stopped and I tried to restart the car it would sound like it wanted to turn over but never did. It sounded like when someone floods a car. Another time it was -20 outside and I was starting it from my key starter ( I don't have one of the newer key fobs)...mine has a normal key with an electric lock and auto start buttons. Anyway I pushed the starter button and it acted like normal with the headlights blinked twice and normally it starts in about 3 seconds. When I went to get in my car it was off and stone cold. I went to start it and acted like I previously stated. The master mechanics can't find anything wrong with it both times I've had my car towed to the repair shop. They replaced the sparkplugs and battery and it happened again after it was "fixed" .

Auto stop/start will malfunction and show a message saying to cut the car off and start it again. This poses a huge safety issue as it can cause an accident from not starting up and shutting off when it stops. Car also says “please park safely car will shut off soon”. My alternator has been checked and the aux battery and regular battery have been replaced as well so they are unable to figure out why I’m getting this message.

2017 Jeep Compass has been having an issue with either the start-stop mechanism or the brakes. I was at a single lane red light. The engine went through the start-stop sequence, but when the light turned green and I released the brake, the car struggled to come to life at all and began to stall out. I had to wiggle the steering wheel and shift the gears to multiple places before returning it to drive and thankfully being able to keep moving. I turned the feature off in my car to prevent it from having any further issues while I just made it to work and back home. When I got to the next light and stepped on the brake, I heard a sound and when I looked down and noticed that the parking brake had engaged on its own. Fortunately I was near the dealership, but I was terrified that I was not going to make it there even. After keeping it over night and test driving it, they found nothing wrong with the vehicle at all. This is not the first time this has happened and we took the Jeep to the dealership only to be told that there was nothing they could find wrong with it. I have found several other complaints by other people saying the same exact thing. They are having this issue and when they take it to their service center, they are being told it is fine. This is not fine, and the fact that there has been absolutely nothing done about this simply because there hasn't been any evidence is ridiculous. This is truly unacceptable and I do not feel safe driving this vehicle. Period. There is something seriously wrong with it that no mechanics seem to be able to pinpoint whatever the issue is.

This car is having tons of electrical issues. From wire malfunctions in the radio to the ORC module failing. All lights for air bags, abs breaks, check engine, and everything electrical are beeping and flashing. The air bags will not work if I get in an accident and I've read they can deploy at any time while I am driving! If you look online, Chrysler/Jeep has LOTS of ORC failure issues and have even recalled for this for it before. This issue should be covered for until at least 100k miles. Some people have had this ORC module fail at as little as 18k miles. I still have 2 warranties on this car and not one covers it. Chrysler/Jeep should be responsible for fixing this. It is a risk to to peoples lives. I'm not understanding why this is still an issue in 2023 with no penalties to Chrysler/Jeep when it's been happening for over 10 years!? I'm hoping writing this will add one more person to the lost of issues Jeep has so something can be done about it.

While driving down the road, all doors closed, and with the lift gate closed the Jeep Compass' Emergency Parking Break is engaging at random. Shortly before it does this the vehicle loses ability to accelerate. A quick google search has yielded many hits on many Jeep Compass and Jeep Cherokee owners from years ranging from 2014 to 2020 having the same problem and Jeep refusing to acknowledge or fix the issue. This is a serious safety concern that is going to get people killed.

My Jeep was manufactured August 2016 directly after a recall for camshaft position sensory and crankshaft position sensor. For the past 3 years I have gotten a periodical check engine light for the camshaft position sensor in bank 1. Two weeks ago the engine began to stall at random times and the camshaft position sensor light came back on. I replaced it this weekend and the issue is persisting. I've checked everything else and there are no other codes that are pulling. I have had it inspected at my employment since I work for a dealership. The engine stalling on the highway is putting me and other drivers at a huge safety risk. I have almost been hit three times when it has stalled and there is nothing I can do in the middle of the road.

Delamination of touch screen to radio/electronic control panel. This causes the system to touch random portions of the screen, deeming it uncontrollable. The system will also make phone calls I’m not trying to make. More importantly, when I try to make phone calls, it will immediately disconnect the call. I had an emergency on the road recently and needed to make and receive calls but was unable to! In addition, I was driving and trying to figure out how to get my phone to work, which was a huge danger to me and others. This is stock equipment manufactured by LG. The first sign of this issue was the screen changing randomly, plus there is visible signs of delamination, which at first i believed to be water damage. No one has raised this issue after inspection, but after doing a quick search, I see that it is a widespread problem among Jeep vehicles.

Uconnect touch screen delaminating on my 2017 Jeep Compass Limited 4X4. Started right after my car was just out of warranty, so when I called no one would help me or fix the issue. This was about 2 years ago, I have been dealing with this issue since 2020, it is now 2023.. Since then the screen has gotten WAY worse, delaminating half the screen. It is very distracting while driving and a safety hazard as it will randomly change settings, change which screen I'm on (if on audio, it will change to climate control etc.), sometimes does not work while I am touching the screen, like if I am trying change my climate control settings. If I am driving and need to change my AC up or heat down and its not working, I am having to take my eyes off the road longer to try and get the screen to work, which is a huge safety hazard. Also, probably not be related to the delamination, but my phone will not connect through USB to my Jeep, therefore I cannot use Android Auto. This is also a safety concern as I have to hold my phone or set it down on my lap and look down constantly to use GPS. I live in NJ and GPS is a MUST when driving anywhere. I have tried many different phones, different cables, and resetting my system, with no luck. With so many things wrong with the Jeeps screens especially 2017 and 2018 models you would think they would put out a recall, specifically for the delamination! This is happening to SO many people with various Jeep models. I have been on the phone with Jeep multiple times, many times with representatives who are short with me, and do not care about the issue. It seems as if they get so many calls about the same issue, that once they hear that you are having problems with your screen delaminating they just dismiss you and want to get you off the phone. The issues I am dealing with, along with so many others is very distracting and a major safety concern when the screen is not working property while driving.

The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle shutoff without warning. The contact also stated that the vehicle failed to start-up after multiple attempts. The vehicle had to be jump started. The vehicle was taken to Classic Honda of Midland (3705 W Wall St, Midland, TX 79703) and they offered no assistance. The contact then took the vehicle to an independent mechanic where they discovered that the battery was defective; however, after multiple replacements, the failure continued. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.

MY NEIGHBOR DROVE ME TO MY ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON APPT. WHEN WE RETURNED, THE JEEP WAS STILL ON AND MY FAMILY SHOWED UP TRYING THE FOLLOWING: CHANGE BATTERIES TO KEY FOB. CHECKED CABLES AND CAR BATTERY. MULTIPLE ELECTRICAL ISSUES FOR THE LAST 2 YEARS. MOST NOTABLY IS WHEN I START THE CAR THE TEMPERATURE RESETS ITSELF TO THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT IT WAS. I.E. TURNED CAR OFF WITH TEMP LO AND RESET ITSELF TO HI. TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHO STATES THEY CAN'T REPLICATE THIS AT ALL. THIS STILL HAPPENS WITH NO RESOLVE. NOW I RECEIVE DASH MESSAGES STATING MULTIPLE LIGHTS DON'T WORK SUCH AS THE BRAKE LIGHTS HOWEVER THEY ARE PERFECTLY FINE. OTHER MESSAGES HAVE FLASHED BUT THEN DISAPPEAR. ALSO ISSUES WITH THE USB AND UCONNECT. USB HAS BEEN REPLACED DUE TO BEING LOOSE BUT NOW AS I DRIVE THE USB CUTS IN AND OUT. ALSO HAVE BEEN TOLD THEY CANNOT REPLICATE THIS ISSUE.MANY OF THESE ISSUES STARTED 6 MONTHS AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE AND STILL PERSIST TO THIS DAY.

EXAMPLE: ENGINE LIGHT, AIR BAG, OIL, WITH EVERY WARNING LIGHT THERE IS. VEHICLE JUST SHUT DOWN ON A BUSY ROAD. VERY DANGEROUS. 15 MIN LATER IT STARTED BACK UP LIKE THERE WASNT A PROBLEM. THERE IS EXCESS OIL USE ALSO. CHANGED OIL, A MONTH LATER, ITS A 1/4 LOW. NO DRIPS EITHER. THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING FOR A VEHICLE THAT IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD.

THE RADIO/NAVIGATION SYSTEM SEEMS TO HAVE A MIND OF IT'S OWN. FIRST, THE RADIO SCREEN HAS BEEN SLOWLY SEPARATING FROM THE RADIO, WHICH HASN'T AFFECTED THE USE OF THE TOUCH SCREEN USAGE. IT IS ABOUT HALF WAY SEPARATED. ALL OF A SUDDEN WE FIND THE UNIT CHANGING OUR RADIO STATIONS USING OUR PRESETS AND MANUALLY ENTERING IN DIGITS; IT SCROLLS THROUGH THE AIR CONDITIONING VENT OPTIONS AND STOPS ON ANY ONE OF THEM RANDOMLY; IT HAS SELECTED THE UCONNECT APP TRYING TO LOAD SOME APPLICATION THAT ISN'T LOADED; IT HAS SELECTED TO TURN ON THE HEATED STEERING WHEEL; IT HAS SELECTED TO TURN ON EITHER SEAT'S HEATER AND THEN OFF AGAIN, THEN BOTH, ETC.; IT HAS SELECTED THE NAVIGATION AND ROUTED TO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS AND STARTED THE NAVIGATION ALL ON IT'S OWN; ON ONE DRIVE, WHILE IN MOTION, THIS SUMMER WHEN 100 DEG OUTSIDE, IT HAS TURNED THE HEATER ALL THE WAY UP AND THEN LOCKED THE SCREEN SO WE COULDN'T CHANGE IT BACK. ON THIS ONE, IT NEARLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT! MY HAS HAD A STROKE BEFORE AND CAN'T TAKE THE HEAT. WHEN IT WOULDN'T LET HER CHANGE IT BACK TO AIR CONDITIONING SHE NEARLY PASSED OUT TRYING TO GET OUT OF TRAFFIC AND TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IT WOULDN'T EVEN LET HER USE THE MANUAL KNOBS TO CONTROL THE AIR CONDITIONING. THEY WERE LOCKED. EVEN WHEN TURNING CAR OFF AND THEN BACK ON DIDN'T HELP INITIALLY. IT TOOK 3 TIMES UNTIL IT LET HER ADJUST IT. THESE HAPPENINGS ARE RANDOM; SOME HAPPENING MORE THAN OTHERS AND SOMETIMES NOT AT ALL. IT HAPPENS AT ANY POINT, IN MOTION OR SITTING STILL; CITY, HIGHWAY, TURNING, STRAIGHT; IT DOESN'T MATTER TO IT. THIS HAPPENS AT LEAST DAILY AND WILL START AND STOP AT RANDOM TIMES. MOST OF THE TIME IT DOESN'T STOP UNTIL YOU CUT THE CAR OFF. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE IN SO MANY WAYS. I HAVE VIDEOS THAT SHOWS THIS, BUT CAN'T UPLOAD A VIDEO.

IT STARTED W/ MY RADIO MAKING THIS CRAZY INDESCRIBABLY LOUD SOUND ALONG W/ FREEZING THE SCREEN. TURNING OFF THE RADIO WOULD NOT STOP THE SOUND, NOT EVEN TURNING OFF THE ENTIRE VEHICLE WOULD STOP THE SOUND. SERV DEPT COULD NEVER REPLICATE, I BROUGHT IT IN ONE TIME WHEN RADIO WAS ON A NON-EXISTENT PHONE CALL AND ACTING UP. THEY TOOK MY CAR AND TURNED IT OFF, NEXT DAY TOLD ME THEY COULDN'T REPLICATE. I DEMANDED THAT THE GIRL WHO TOOK MY CAR IN AND SAW WHAT WAS GOING ON SPEAK WITH THE TECH TO EXPLAIN WHAT SHE SAW. THEY AGREED TO ORDER ME A NEW RADIO. ADDITIONALLY I BEGAN HAVING ISSUES W/ JEEP THROWING ON RANDOM DASH INDICATOR LIGHTS AND NOT STARTING. TCM PIN WAS SPREADING AND CAUSING INDICATORS B BATTERY CONTROLLING STOP/START TESTED BAD. THEY REPLACED. I HAD ALREADY REPLACED MY A BATTERY A DAY OR SO BEFORE. DAMAGE WIRES FOUND AT FUSE BOX (THEY BLAMED ME) I HAVE MADE ZERO MODS TO CAR OR EVEN LIFTED THE HOOD MYSELF. BCM REPLACED. I HAD ISSUE W/ ENGINE CUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING IN ROAD & PULLING EBRAKE BEFORE I'M DUE FOR OIL CHANGE. HAD OIL CONSUMPTION TEST DONE AND THEY SAY IT'S FINE, THIS IS BECAUSE CHRYSLER MAKES UP THE CONSUMPTION STANDARD. SO YOU WILL ALWAYS BE "FINE." THIS IT TO PREVENT YOU FROM GETTING TO COMPRESSION TEST. I GO IN MANY TIMES FOR THIS SAME ISSUE. EVENTUALLY, I DEMAND WITH FCA THAT THEY ALLOW COMPRESSION TEST AND REPLACE MY ENGINE WHEN THEY DISCOVER IT'S DUE TO OIL CONSUMP. TECH REPORTS OIL LOW, SPRK PLUG CYL 3 IS OIL FOULED, COMPRESS. TEST DONE AIR IS FELT FROM OIL FILL, BORE SCOPE OF CYL 3 WALLS ARE SCORED AND HAVE OIL ON THEM. FCA APPROVES NEW ENGINE FOR ME. AFTER NEW ENG. I DRIVE 13 MI ENG IS OVER HEATING. T-STAT CLAMP REPLACED. DO NOT GIVE UP & DOCUMENT WELL!

IT HAD TO DO WITH THE PARKING BRAKE AS WELL. WHEN I BROUGHT IT TO THE NORTH HAVEN, CT DEALERSHIP TO GET FIXED, THEY SAID THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIX IT AND HAD TO CONTACT CHRYSLER. CHRYSLER TOLD THEM WHAT TO DO. THE DEALERSHIP DID AS TOLD AND IT RESOLVED THE ISSUE--SOMETHING ABOUT THE BATTERY. WHEN I WAS INFORMED ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED, I ASKED WHY THERE WAS NO WARNING OR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT GOING OFF ALERTING ME THAT SOMETHING WAS NOT RIGHT. THE PERSON AT THE DEALERSHIP SAID 'WELL ONCE YOU NOTICE THINGS AREN'T WORKING WELL, THEN IT'S PROBABLY A BATTERY ISSUE. BRING IT BACK IN.' HOW IS THIS ACCEPTABLE? THERE IS NO WARNING THAT MY CAR IS GOING TO JUST STOP AS I AM DRIVING. I JUST HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL OTHER THINGS GO WRONG TO DETERMINE IF IT IS MAYBE A BATTERY ISSUE? THAT IS UNHEARD OF. THE DEALERSHIP HAD MY CAR FOR ALMOST A WEEK, DID NOT GIVE ME A LOANER, BUT SAID I COULD RENT A CAR AT A LOW COST. RENT A CAR? I AM NOT GOING TO PAY MONEY FOR A CAR WHEN MINE IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. AND WHEN ASKED IF THERE WAS A RECALL REGARDING THIS ISSUE, THE PERSON AT THE DEALERSHIP SAID 'NO, THEY ONLY DO RECALLS WHEN IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE.' SO WHEN MY JEEP AUTOMATICALLY SHUT DOWN ON A ROAD WITH A SPEED LIMIT OF 55, THAT'S NOT A SAFETY ISSUE? I AM COMPLETELY UNSATISFIED WITH MY EXPERIENCE RESOLVING THIS ISSUE, AND TO BE HONEST, I CANNOT SAY THAT IT IS RESOLVED BECAUSE THERE WILL BE NO WARNING AS TO WHETHER OR NOT IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN. THE PRODUCT IS NOT SAFE APPARENTLY BECAUSE THERE IS NO INDICATION AS TO WHEN THE BATTERY NEEDED TO BE SERVICED. BUT THAN WHEN I TRIED WITH THE REMOTE STARTER AGAIN. IT BEGAN TO BURN AGAIN AND THIS TIME THERE WAS SMOKE. DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THE PROGRAM IN THE REMOTE STARTER THAT CAUSED THE ISSUE BUT IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER MY EXTENDED WARRANTY. AND DUE TO THE MILEAGE OF THE VEHICLE THE REGULAR WARRANTY EXPIRED. FIAT CHRYSLER HAS AGREED WITH THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP STATES THAT THE VEHICLE IS SAFE TO DRIVE BECAUSE THEY REMOVED THE POWER SUPPLY FUSE AND THE 30 AMP FUSE FROM POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT AND DOWN CIRCUIT.

IN SOME MONTHS FOLLOWING THAT, I HAVE HAD MY CAR STOP ON ME WHILE DRIVING, APPROXIMATELY 4-5 TIMES WITH ONLY EXCUSES AS TO WHY THE CAR WOULD UNSAFELY DO THIS. FIRST TIME WAS AN UPDATE THAT NEEDED TO BE DONE. SECOND TIME WAS THE KEYFOB BATTERY BUT ACCUSED IT OF BEING LACK OF OIL CHANGES (I DON'T NEED TO GO TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR OIL CHANGES). NEXT, WAS NO EXPLANATION AT ALL. LAST WAS YESTERDAY WHEN IT DIED TWICE IN ONE DAY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THEY CALLED TO LET ME KNOW THAT IT PROBABLY IS BECAUSE MY OIL IS 3/4 WAY DEPLETED EVEN THOUGH I HAD AN OIL CHANGE DONE LESS THAN 3K MILES AGO. THEIR SUGGESTION IS THAT I RETURN EVERY 500 MILES SO THEY CAN TOP ME OFF IF THE OIL SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE. THESE ARE THANKFULLY IN LESS BUSY STREETS MOSTLY DRIVING STRAIGHT BUT ONCE WHILE TURNING. ONCE INCLUDED AN ERROR CODE THAT I WAS TOLD WAS AN ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ERROR BUT IT DIDNT REGISTER. I HAVE PICTURES AND VIDEOS ON MY PHONE FROM THE INCIDENTS. THE FOLLOWING CONCERNS ARE INCLUDED IN THIS DOCUMENTATION: (1) THE VEHICLE TURNED OFF WHILE IN MOTION DRIVING ON A CITY STREET, THE PARKING BREAK ENGAGED AND PREVENTED THE VEHICLE FROM MOVING FURTHER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CITY STREET. (2) THE VEHICLE REFUSED TO START WHEN PARKED IN A GARAGE. ONCE PRESSING THE START BUTTON MULTIPLE TIMES, THE VEHICLE STARTED AND MULTIPLE SERVICE LIGHTS CAME ON, INCLUDING "SERVICE ESP" AND "SERVICE 4WD". THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE LIFE OF OWNING THE VEHICLE (ONLY 23 MONTHS AND ABOUT 18,000 MILES). FIRE AND POLICE REPORTS WERE FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES THAT DID NOT REQUIRE MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED. THE CONTACT CALLED AN UNKNOWN DEALER WHO DID NOT WANT TO BE INVOLVED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND THE MATTER WAS REFERRED TO THEIR LEGAL TEAM AND THE INSURANCE COMPANY. NO RADIO, NO DASH, NO BRAKES, NO STEERING. LUCKILY TRAFFIC WAS MOVING EACH TIME. AFTER APPROXIMATELY A CITY BLOCK THE CAR RESTARTS. DEALER TESTED THE CAR AND COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM AFTER DRIVING IT 20 MILES WITH A COMPUTER CONNECTED. I FEEL THIS CAN BE LIFE THREATENING AND SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED BEFORE THE INEVITABLE HAPPENS. I HAVE 2 SMALL CHILDREN AND MY WIFE WITH ME MOST OF THE TIME. THEY RECOMMEND DRIVING IT TO SEE IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. I'M NO LONGER COMFORTABLE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE.
