Filed: May 2018

While driving on the interstate at 65–75 mph, your Jeep's front end began shaking severely, forcing you to slow down and pull over completely. You've experienced this problem before (even after replacing shocks), and you're concerned it could cause a rollover. The issue appears to be in the front end steering or suspension system and needs professional inspection and repair.

NHTSA #: 11096835
criticalSTEERING
Filed: Nov 2013

While driving at 40 mph over a pothole, your steering suddenly became unresponsive, though you were able to regain control. A certified mechanic discovered a crack in the frame on the driver's side near the steering gearbox, which likely caused the loss of steering control. This issue is related to a known recall (NHTSA Campaign 97V069000), but your vehicle's VIN may not have been included. Repairing this will require welding or replacing the cracked frame section near the steering gearbox.

NHTSA #: 10552049

Filed: Jan 2017

While driving about 60 mph on the highway, your vehicle's front end suddenly began shaking violently. This was diagnosed as the "Jeep death wobble," a steering and suspension issue that can make the front end unstable at highway speeds. This type of vibration at high speeds can be dangerous and needs immediate inspection. The fix will likely involve inspecting and possibly replacing steering components, suspension parts, or wheel alignment adjustments.

NHTSA #: 10948132
Structure2 issues
criticalSTRUCTURE
Filed: Apr 2016

Your driver's side door upper hinge has rusted and separated from the body where it was welded, leaving only the lower hinge holding the door in place. This creates an unsafe condition where your door could fall or become unstable. The fix will likely involve replacing the rusted hinge and re-welding it securely to the body, or potentially replacing the entire door assembly.

NHTSA #: 10852849
criticalSTRUCTURE
Filed: Dec 2015

Your Jeep has severe rust throughout the body and frame, with rust holes in the roof corners that are allowing water to enter the vehicle. Multiple components have failed and cracked due to rust, and the passenger side of the frame is at risk of breaking under continued driving. Rust has also damaged the fuel tank mounting brackets, which created a hole in the fuel tank itself. Addressing this will likely require extensive rust removal, structural repair or replacement of rusted components, and fuel system inspection.

Filed: Jul 2016

Your right-hand drive Jeep has several dashboard instrument issues: the oil pressure gauge was added below the dash instead of being repaired in its proper location, making it unsafe to view while driving; the odometer and speedometer readings appear inaccurate; and the dashboard and console lights don't work. Additionally, the rear differential failed and required replacement. These issues should be addressed through proper instrument cluster repair and rear differential service.

NHTSA #: 10881953

Filed: Jun 2016

Your Jeep experiences severe vibration and shaking when driving on highways, forcing you to slow down significantly to make it stop. This problem has occurred multiple times and persists even after previous repair attempts. The issue likely involves suspension or steering components that need thorough inspection and replacement.

Electrical System,unknown Or Other,engine1 issue
criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
Filed: May 2015

Your Jeep is stalling while driving at highway speeds and then won't restart, forcing you to get towed multiple times. Even after replacing the engine computer (PCM) and crank position sensor twice, the problem returned — and your son discovered that wiggling the PCM connector makes the engine start again, suggesting a loose connection. This is a dangerous situation since your engine can shut off without warning while driving, making it hard to steer or control the vehicle in traffic.

NHTSA #: 10721042
Electrical System,engine,fuel/propulsion System1 issue
criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Mar 2015

Your vehicle is stalling unexpectedly in multiple situations—starting with hard stops or bumps, then progressing to random stalling whenever you brake or hit a pothole. When it stalls, you lose all engine power, steering assist, and acceleration control until you restart the vehicle. Most recently, it's been stalling intermittently during acceleration and deceleration at any speed with no clear pattern, though it sometimes restarts on its own. This could involve checking your fuel pump, ignition switch, or battery connections to restore reliable engine operation.

Electrical System,engine1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
Filed: Nov 2024

Your 1996 Jeep Cherokee stalled while driving at 40 MPH and wouldn't restart, with no warning lights appearing. A mechanic found a failed manifold and repaired it, but the vehicle still ran poorly. A second mechanic discovered that an aftermarket distributor and computer (both previously installed) had failed. The manufacturer won't cover the aftermarket parts since they didn't install them. You may need to replace the distributor and engine computer with either OEM parts or quality aftermarket replacements.

Filed: Mar 2020

Your Jeep shakes severely when you hit bumps. After driving about 10 miles and coming to a stop, the engine won't restart for roughly 20 minutes — though rocking the car side to side sometimes gets it to start again. Your steering column feels loose, and your shocks appear to have little or no dampening effect.

Suspension,wheels1 issue
highSUSPENSION,WHEELS
Filed: Nov 2018

While driving at 65 mph over a bump, your steering wheel and vehicle suddenly jerked violently — a problem known as 'death wobble.' An independent mechanic identified that your vehicle needs a wheel alignment, though the vehicle hasn't been repaired yet. Fixing this will likely involve realigning your front wheels and possibly inspecting suspension components for wear.

NHTSA #: 11152942
Suspension1 issue
highSUSPENSION
Filed: Nov 2018

While driving at 70 mph on uneven pavement, your Cherokee started vibrating severely. The vibration stopped when you slowed down to lower speeds. This type of problem on a vehicle with 180,000 miles often involves worn suspension or steering components that need inspection and potential replacement.

Steering,suspension,power Train1 issue
highSTEERING,SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
Filed: Apr 2018

While driving at 55 mph, your Cherokee suddenly shook uncontrollably. At the same time, the power steering seized up and then became loose, making the car difficult to control. A mechanic determined that the power steering gauge needed replacement and the front end alignment needed adjustment.

Filed: Feb 2017

While driving at 65 mph, your passenger rear tire suddenly blew out and came completely off the wheel, with no visible puncture or valve stem damage. The tire was a Yokohama YKHTX P235/75 R15. A tire shop examined the remains, and you'll likely need to replace the tire and possibly have the wheel inspected for damage.

Electrical System1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Jun 2016

While driving at various speeds, your speedometer suddenly stopped working and your vehicle began to slow down without you taking any action. You took the vehicle to a dealer, but they couldn't figure out what was causing the problem, so it wasn't repaired. The issue happened at 120,000 miles.

Fuel/propulsion System1 issue
highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Oct 2014

Your 1996 Jeep Cherokee was recalled for a fuel system issue. When you took it to the dealer to fix the recall, they started the work but couldn't finish because replacement parts weren't available. The dealer also damaged some bolts on your hitch during the process and warned you not to use the hitch until repairs were complete. After waiting about 4 weeks for parts to arrive, the dealer was able to complete the repair.

Filed: Oct 2014

You purchased this 1996 Jeep Cherokee in August 2011 and discovered the steering box was loose, which is a safety concern. Additionally, the third brake light needed to be replaced but was never fixed before you bought the vehicle.
