In summer of 2023 my car 2011 Sonata Hybrid quit running and would not start. My granddaughter had used the car to go to Oklahoma City for a tennis tournament. Her life was at risk because she was coming back in the evening and was alone. The next day I had the car towed to Ada Oklahoma and then called dealership and had it towed to Ardmore, Oklahoma where I had purchased the car new in 2011. The car was at the dealership for 6 months. The vehicle was inspected at the dealership. There were no warning lights or symptoms of the failure prior to the breakdown. I am an 80 year old female that knows nothing about a car engine and they talked to me like I was a mechanic. I still do not know why my claim was denied but was told that I did not have a claim. I had to rent a car to get to work for several months and was out the money to have my car towed 2 times. Not to mention the strain of being without my car for 6-7 months. I finally just gave up until I read about all these other people having trouble with Hyundai also.
There was a 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid transmission-related shift cable recall, Campaign 123, which covered certain 2011-2014 Sonatas (including some 2011-2015 Hybrids). I purchased a vehicle from Cash Car Network on 4/3/2025. At the time of purchase, the vehicle's odometer showed a mileage significantly lower than what official records indicated. After purchasing, I reviewed the Carfax report and the vehicle registration history, which documented that the actual mileage was approximately 270,000 miles — much higher than what the odometer displayed. This discrepancy suggests that either the odometer was tampered with or the instrument cluster was switched from another vehicle without disclosure, which violates federal laws related to odometer fraud (49 U.S.C. § 32701 et seq.). Additionally, the vehicle experienced multiple serious mechanical failures shortly after the purchase, affecting its safety and drivability. I have since returned the vehicle to the dealership. I am filing this complaint to report potential odometer fraud, failure to disclose critical vehicle information, and the sale of an unsafe vehicle to a consumer. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this dealership for possible violations of federal odometer disclosure laws. While Driving sometimes car comes to a slow paste like it wants to stall I have to take my foot off gas paddle and put my foot back on again for car to accelerate and speed up again I am also noticing this when I turn my headlights on while car is driving. Recently had car engine light come on and car had to be towed to a mechanic. Car was fix where light was gone but I am still having the problem with the car wanting to stall while driving.Took it to dealer who said they saw nothing wrong because no check light was on but the problem for me still is there as of this morning 1/12/2024

On July 19 I started my car and there was a loud knocking noise coming from underneath my hood when I lifted the hood the knocking sound was coming from my engine I’ve had this car for 3 years never had any problems or issues at all with my car not sure what’s going on or if there are any recalls on parts for my car
My vehicle dash board has started cracking in several locations. Causing a risk to my safety, having the potential of breaking up in the event of a crash casing the dash board to break up and shatter that would cause injury to my passenger and myself. I have seen on the internet where Hyundai has a recall on this, but I was not contracted about this and wound like this matter review please thanks
My dash board is cracking and the Hyundai dealership don’t seem to think it’s a safety recall. And I found this information, saying this sonatas due to defective materials used for the dashboard that may cause it to crack and form sharp edges, potentially causing injury during an accident. The recall affects over 220,000 vehicles and requires dealers to replace the dashboard in affected models for free. I would like you to look into and see if it’s was a recall please,
Not sure what component is responsible but the car caught fire while driving on [XXX]. Started smoking and then shut off. Limped car to the shoulder and got out. GAS GAUGE WORKED, ONLY, INTERMITTENTLY. WOULD INDICATE EMPY AFTER A FILLUP. AT ABOUT 3/4 OF A TANK, WOULD START SHOWING ACCURATE READING. NOW SEEMS NOT TO WORK AT ALL. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR 2 YEARS. NOW, IT IS STUCK ON 1/2 FULL NO MATTER HOW MUCH OR LITTLE FUEL IS IN THE TANK. MY SAFETY CONCERN IS RUNNING OUT OF FUEL ON THE HIGHWAY AND BEING REAR ENDED BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. ONLINE, I HAVE FOUND. MANY OTHERS COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS ISSUE.
My car won’t start idk what’s cost that’s
My 2011 Hyundai sonata Engine failed in April 2023. Was towed and the engine was replaced due to the recall. Got car back November 4th 2023. Fuel gauge never went out and after driving about 3 miles the engine light came on. Dec 13th was driving on highway and felt like the car was going to fall apart. Able to get off highway only for the car to die. Every light including some I have never seen came on. Was stuck on the side of the road with my ESA dog in 28°. Temp. For over an hour with no power and hazards starting to dim. I'm disabled and had no help. Local PD towed vehicle and drove me home. Car sat at tow yard collecting fees as I was waiting for the dealership to call me back. Finally got help with paying the tow yard company only to be stuck once again for over an hour in the cold and then denied a tow to the dealership since they decided to cancel my appointment by text while I was on with Hyundai roadside assistance. They denied any help. Luckily the tow yard felt bad and made a call for me and a friend came and paid the 160.00 tow truck to get the car back to my house. They have now not returned my calls and the case manager has not responded as well. This is unacceptable. I don't have any money and I have no idea how they can get away with treating a disabled person in the winter days before Christmas by letting me be stranded twice on the side of the road with an engine that has less than 10 miles on it.
My Hyundai Sonata started messing up 3 months ago. My check engine light came on I took it to autozone to get it checked and it was my knock sensor wire harness I dont have a warranty on my car and I dont know what else to do
My 2011 Hyundai Sonata was stolen on June 13th in Minneapolis in broad daylight on a busy street. When I got it back at the Mpls Police impound lot they said it was stolen (most likely by kids) because of the security defect the Hyundais and Kias are known to have: the lack of an interceptor that other cars have. That security defect has been well publicized and apparently widely featured on TikTok. The week before the theft I received the Hyundai recall notice for a software solution to be installed to solve the security defect, but when I contacted area dealerships they either didn't have it yet or were booked out several months. I've seen it reported that Hyundai (and Kia) companies have known about the defect for years, so it's especially frustrating!
Picked up my car after getting my recalls done on May 10, 2023. Drove it for 2 days. As I was on my way home on the 2nd day, my car started giving me trouble. As I accelerate, the car will stall out and I will have to turn it off and back on just to get it out of the middle of the street. It won't go over 1000 RPMs. The EPS light, battery light, and engine light all lit up.
as i was drivim back home from engine started a smoke green, smelling like burn wires electricity ect. the shut off , i ran out the car. in the middle of traffic. i contacted mechanic , has inform me that the engine has siezed .will no longer turn on. and maybe some ECM or electrical but dat the engine is locked.oil looks very clean radiator fluid clean aswell. what could have caused this no idea. im scare to try to start the car

Engine stalled and shut off and wouldn’t start again
The car suddenly stopped idling while driving at around 40-45 mph and everything seemed normal until it would not drive but the car was on and then the steering was difficult to pull over to a safe area and the brakes were hard to brake and stop but when it came to a full stop the vehicle dash warning lights were flickering and shut off. When I tried to attempt and start the vehicle it would not start but everything turns on ike normal al the lights except the engine was not on. Also it started smelling like some sort of electrical components were burning or something but I couldn't see any smoke or anything coming from the engine area but it seemed like electrical burn somewhere in the car. The vehicle is very unsafe to drive since there was no kind of warning lights or sounds and just stopped working while driving. The vehicle is well maintained and up to date with maintenance services. It became inoperable and had to be towed home since I ended up stuck in a unsafe spot in the middle of a busy street and waited hours for someone to tow it back to my house because it was already about 1 or 2 in the morning. The next day had hired a mechanic to come and do the diagnostics and repairs and still doesn't start or drive and I had to hire another mechanic to diagnose the problem again and was told that the motor is seized and I would need a new engine and other work done on it as well and so me and my family are stuck without a car which is our only car and no more money to fix the car and have no way to bring my child to school and also take my wife to work and etc etc since this problem and don't know what's wrong with it after spending so much money trying to have it fixed so possibly a lemon car.
Car accelerates randomly. Makes a sort of "vroom" sound and lurches forward. Causing my vehicle to run into my friends garage door. Also noticed acceleration at various times while moving.
Rear brake light bulb socket melted . Brake light will not work it melted the bulb in the wire harness.
My vehicle has an excessive oil consumption issue that started approximately in September 2021 after I got an oil change and had to put more oil in it after about 2 months when the oil change light went off. I have taken the vehicle to 2 different mechanics and they are unable to find an oil leak. There has been no oil leaking on the ground, no burning smell, no smoke showing, but the oil is somehow being consumed rapidly. The check oil light has not gone off since. I literally have to check the oil level every 2-3 weeks to check the levels. I got another oil change in February 2022 and have had to put 12 quarts in since that time. In July 2022 my car started driving funny with low power issues and the check engine light came on. I had the spark plugs and coil packs replaced. Now I'm dealing with low power on inclines and the catalytic converter now needs to be replaced. The mechanic believes it's due to the excessive oil consumption issue. It's my understanding that several Hyundais have been recalled due to excessive oil consumption issues.
Car shook violently 5 Seconds later shuts off on freeway . Took to dealership 3 times they say nothing wrong with it but coils they swapped out coils and still doing something .
The Sonata Hyundai Hybrid trunk will not open when the battery dies, and since the battery for the Hybrid is in the trunk, when the battery dies, the car has to be towed because, unfortunately, the key to the trunk has never worked. The last time my battery died, the dealer, after many hours, finally managed to get the trunk open but not without damaging the mechanism. Now there is no way for someone to get out of the trunk if they should get locked in. It's my understanding that a trunk latch malfunction has been a problem with Hyundai Sonata Hybrids for a long time. There is a recall on the newer models. Why not the 2011? The latch does not work. There were no warnings that the battery was low before the trunk became unaccessable.
Engine-locked up(with oil inside) Gearshift-does not change to next gear unless I use emergency shift lock.
The shifter is not being recognized in park by the motor therefore, it is not wanting to start. Once i do get it started, then i can not shift out of park i have to stick the key down in the shift unlock position to get it to move out of park.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, several unknown warning lights illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but declined the engine replacement since the mileage did not match the title mileage. The manufacturer informed the contact to park the vehicle as it was not safe to drive. The failure mileage was 234,875.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that he purchased the vehicle last year with a new engine at 189,000 miles. Recently, the contact stated that while driving at 25 MPH, the vehicle began to stall, and an abnormal knocking sound was coming from the engine. There was no warning light illuminated. Due to the failure, he had the vehicle towed to a dealer where the engine was disassembled to diagnose the cause of the failure. The dealer requested the maintenance records for the vehicle; based on his available maintenance records, the dealer determined that the failure was caused by poor maintenance. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred him to another dealer for assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.
When fuel tank is quarter full, car shuts down when i make complete stops like on traffic lights or when turning. i have to turn it completely off and have gear on park and restart it
This car had an open recall fixed a few years ago for EPS (electrical power steering). It is now same issue occurred and has ruined the starter. Mechanic can’t even turn it on to fix EPS. Hyundai is refusing to pay for starter. It’s due to their faulty EPS system!! So, the car can’t even be diagnosed for the EPS because of the bad starter. It’s extremely hard to drive and to turn because of EPS recall. It is not safe. They said they’d fix it since it was associated with previous recall now they are denying to pay for it. Hyundai case is 18735488. I have escalated the case with Hyundai but no one ever reached out to me. The car is just sitting at the Hyundai mechanic shop until they respond and pay for their faulty parts.
When I’m driving out of nowhere it will only go 20 miles an hour and I can put the gas petal to the floor it hesitates My shifter will get stuck in park and my brake lights stay on even when it’s in park
The contact called on behalf of her son who owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the vehicle would intermittently stall and shut-off with the check engine warning light illuminated. Due to the failure, the contact had the vehicle towed on multiple occasions to an independent mechanic who topped off the fluids however, the mechanic was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer and the contact was informed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 18V934000 (Engine, Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the Vin was not included. The contact also stated that the vehicle would run hot as the temperature gauge would indicate a rise in engine temperature. Additionally, the contact stated the vehicle failed to start up after several attempts. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
I was on the on ramp of the freeway with the closest vehicle several hundred yards in front and no vehicles behind or on the side of me when my sunroof "exploded". Fortunately the curtain was drawn so no glass poured in the vehicle, but when I pulled over half the sunroof was gone and the remainder in shredded. I do no believe anything struck the vehicle.
Unknown Rear taillight out, but unable to replace bulb because something melted. Making it impossible to simply change the bulb with replacing the whole unit/light. Rear stoplight keeps going out
Lost all power going up hill and now only goes about 20 mph and runs bad
ON MARCH 1, 2021, I NOTICED AN ODD SMELL WHILE IDLING IN LINE. TURNED CAR OFF UNTIL IT WAS MY TURN. THE SMELL WAS GONE ONCE I TURNED IT BACK ON, SO THOUGHT IT WAS ANOTHER CAR AND DROVE TO WORK. THAT EVENING, SMELL STARTED AGAIN AFTER DRIVING A FEW MILES TO PARENT'S HOUSE. PARKED THE CAR AT PARENT'S AND ARRANGED TO DRIVE IT TO MECHANIC THE NEXT MORNING AFTER HAVING MY FATHER CONFIRM THERE WAS WATER IN THE RADIATOR AND THE OIL WASN'T TOO LOW. ENGINE TEMP GAUGE WAS NORMAL. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON, BUT HAD BEEN FOR THE LENGTH OF TIME I HAD CAR. I HAD IT CHECKED SEVERAL TIMES- ISSUE WOULD BE SUPPOSEDLY FOUND, BUT IT WOULD ALWAYS COME BACK ON. I WAS LED TO BELIEVE IT WAS A FAULTY SENSOR ISSUE. THERE WAS NOTHING OBVIOUSLY WRONG WHEN WE LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD AND HAD NO REASON TO THINK IT WOULD NOT BE SAFE TO DRIVE THE SHORT DISTANCE TO THE MECHANIC. NEXT MORNING, MARCH 2, 2021, I INTENDED TO DRIVE THE CAR TO THE SHOP SO THEY COULD ADDRESS THE ISSUE CAUSING THE SMELL, AND FATHER FOLLOWED BEHIND. CAR SEEMED FINE AT FIRST, BUT AFTER A COUPLE OF MILES DRIVING ON SURFACE STREETS, THE SMELL CAME BACK. PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF CAR, THINKING THAT I WOULD NEED TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED THE REMAINDER OF THE WAY. I SAW SOMETHING COME FROM UNDER HOOD. MY FATHER, WHO HAD BEEN FOLLOWING BEHIND, ASKED ME TO POP THE HOOD. AS I CLIMBED BACK IN THE CAR TO POP THE HOOD, I REALIZED THERE WAS SMOKE INSIDE THE CAR. I GOT OUT, TOLD MY DAD THAT THERE MIGHT BE A FIRE AS THERE WAS SMOKE INSIDE THE CAR. AS WE HAD THAT DISCUSSION, SMOKE STARTED POURING FROM UNDER THE HOOD, AND WE BACKED AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE AND CALLED 911. WITHIN SECONDS, THERE WERE VISIBLE FLAMES AND THE WHOLE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WAS ENGULFED IN FLAME. TODAY, MARCH 10, 2021, I WAS MADE AWARE THAT 2011 HYUNDAI SONATAS WERE INCLUDED IN A LIST OF VEHICLES KNOWN TO CATCH FIRE, SO I AM FILING THIS NOTIFICATION.
THE CAR DOES NOT START AT RANDOM, USUALLY AFTER IT HAS BEEN DRIVEN SOMEWHERE LIKE THE GAS STATION OR THE GROCERY STORE. IT CANNOT BE JUMP-STARTED AND PUMPING THE BREAKS HAS NO EFFECT, THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE CAR TO START IS TO WAIT, LETTING THE CAR SIT OFF FOR A WHILE, AND EVENTUALLY, AN ATTEMPT TO RESTART THE CAR WILL WORK (NOTE: "A WHILE" CAN RANGE FROM ANYWHERE FROM 10 MINUTES TO 4 HOURS). THE BATTERY AND STARTER HAVE BOTH BEEN TESTED TO BE FUNCTIONAL AND THUS ARE NOT THE CULPRIT. THIS ISSUE HAPPENS REGARDLESS OF HOW NEW THE BATTERY IN THE KEY IS. THIS ISSUE HAS RESULTED IN BEING STRANDED IN SOME PLACES FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR 3 YEARS AND HAS STARTED HAPPENING WITH MORE FREQUENCY AS TIME GOES ON.
I'VE BEEN HAVING THIS ISSUE WITH MY SONATA SINCE I'VE HAD IT. THE KEY ALWAYS GETS STUCK IN THE IGNITION AND WON'T COME OUT AT ALL. NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES YOU WIGGLE IT. I'VE GOOGLE THIS ISSUE AND SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE HAD IT. THERE IS NO ANSWER ON HOW TO FIX IT.
I PURCHASE THIS VEHICLE THE OWNER TOLLME THE ENGINE SPEND LOT OF OIL I STILL PURCHACE, I STILL BUY THIS CAR BUT 3 DAYS PASS I CHECK ENGINE AFTER AWAS DRIVING 65 MIL CAR WAS MAKING LOT OF NOISE I STOP AND WAS WITH (0)OIL I CHECK INTERNET ON THIS CAR AND IS RECALL FOR THIS ENGINE BURNING OIL AND NEED TO BE REPLACED I CONTACT THE DEALER THEY TOLD ME TO BRING THE CAR TO PERFORM OIL CONSUMPTION I BRING THE CAR AND THEY DID THE OIL CHANGE 95 DOLLARS AND 2WEEKS LATER WAS NO OIL AGAIN THEY TOLD ME THE THEY WILL DOCUMENTED AND SEE IF THEY DECIDE TO REPLACE
I BOUGHT THIS USED O THIS SUMMER HAD IT LOOKED AT AND HAD OIL CHANGE AND THE ENGINE NEEDS REPLACED. OIL WAS COMPLETELY GONE BUT NO LEAK. AND CRUISE CONTROL STOPPED WORKING. THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A RELIABLE CAR FOR MY DAUGHTER TO GET BACK AND FORTH TO COLLEGE.
THERE IS A KNOCKING NOISE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE GEAR SHIFT. AS I USE THE GEAR SHIFT, WHILE BRAKING AND RELEASING, A KNOCKING NOISE IS HEARD UNDER THE GEAR SHIFT. IT IS CAUSED BY THE BRAKE PEDAL BEING PRESSED. IT KNOCKS WHILE PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL AND SHIFTING FROM DRIVE TO REVERSE AND BACK.
CONNECTION BETWEEN THE SHIFT CABLE AND SHIFT LEVER,IT SAYS THERE IS A RECALL ON IT, BUT WHEN I CALL THE DEALERSHIP THEY TELL ME THERE IS NOT ONE WITH MY VIN NUMBER. WHEN I PUT MY CAR IN REVERSE OR DRIVE IT WILL NOT DISPLAY ON MY DASH IF IT IS IN REVERSE DRIVE OR PARK AND MY CAR HAS TROUBLE MOVING WHEN IT DOES THAT.

TORQUE CONVERTER WENT OUT ALL OF A SUDDEN. COST ME $3150 TO HAVE IT REPLACED. THEN THE GEAR SHIFTER MOVED BACK AND FORTH BUT WILL NOT GO INTO GEAR.
THE DASHBOARD HAS SEVERAL CRACKS AND MANY OTHERS HAVE REPORTED THE SAME PROBLEM ON 2011 AND OTHER MODELS. MY CONCERN IS FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG SINCE THERE ARE SEVERAL CRACKS ON THE DASHBOARD IN THAT AREA.

I LOOKED FOR A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER BUT FLAMES STARTED COMING OUT FROM THE HOOD, SO I PULLED OVER AND GOT OUT, RAN AWAY FROM THE CAR. WITHIN LESS THAT 2 TO 3 MINUETS IT WAS COMPLETELY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, POLICE AND STATE TROOPERS SHOWED UP, PUT OUT THE FIRE. MY CAR WAS BURNT TO THE GROUND!
I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE SINCE OCT 2019. AT THAT TIME I HAD A RECALL FOR THE HARD KNOCK SENSOR AFTER THAT IT CONTINUES TO GIVE ME ISSUES. THE CHECK ENGINE COMES ON CONTINUOUSLY EVERY WEEK. I FIX ONE ISSUE THEN THE LIGHTS COMES BACK ON FOR ANOTHER. WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 91W, VEHICLE BEGAN TO MAKE A VERY LOUD RATTLING NOISE FROM ENGINE. ALL DASHBOARD LIGHTING BEGAN TO FLASH, THEN VEHICLE SHUT OFF. I MANAGED TO STOP IN AN EMERGENCY SECTION OF HIGHWAY. THE VEHICLE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS TURNED ON BUT NOT THE ENGINE. I SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY, CALLED TOWING SERVICE, & WHILE SPEAKING TO THE AGENT I NOTICED SMOKE COMING OUT FROM THE ENGINE AND THEN FROM INSIDE DASHBOARD. FIRE FLAMES THEN IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO COME OUT FROM THE FRONT DRIVER-SIDE ENGINE. I EXITED THE VEHICLE THROUGH THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR, CROSSED THE RAMP LANE, & WATCHED THE ENTIRE FRONT END VEHICLE COMPLETELY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE CITY OF RIVERSIDE FIRE DEPARTMENT PUT OUT THE FIRE WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF CHP.
WHILE I WAS DRIVING MY CAR, THE SHIFT GEAR SWITCH FROM DRIVE TO 1ST GEAR ON IT'S OWN. UNABLE TO MOVE THE GEAR ANYWHERE. IT WAS STUCK ON 1ST GEAR. I COULDN'T PUT IT IN PARK, DRIVE, NEUTRAL OR REVERSE. I WAS SHOCKED WHEN I DISCOVERED THERE WERE SIX OPEN RECALLS DATING BACK TO AT LEAST 2014. THESE RANGED FROM FAULTY DOOR HANDLES TO METAL SHAVINGS IN THE OIL THAT COULD CAUSE STALLING AND/OR DANGEROUS SUDDEN SHUTTING OFF OF THE VEHICLE. OCTOBER 5TH I TOOK THE CAR TO CRAIN HYUNDAI OF BENTONVILLE, IN BENTONVILLE, AR. AFTER 5 HOURS, THEY SAID I WAS GOOD TO GO ON THE RECALLS AND AFTER $300 THE COUPLER WAS FIXED. FAST FORWARD TO DECEMBER 2ND, 2016. EARLIER IN THE DAY, WHILE DRIVING, I NOTICED MY DASHBOARD LIGHTS GETTING LIGHTER AND DARKER. WHEN LIFTED UP THE HOOD IMMEDIATELY FALLS DOWN HARD BECAUSE THERE IS NO SUPPORT ANYMORE TO KEEP THE HOOD UP. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS BECAUSE A PERSON'S ARM OR HAND OR BOTH COULD BE SEVERELY INJURED OR POSSIBLY SEVERED OFF. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY AND THE HOOD IS RELEASED AND OPENED TO REPLACE WINDOW WASHER FLUID OR TO PERFORM ANY OTHER MAINTENANCE ITEM. THE NEXT DAY THE REPAIR SHOP CALLED AND STATED THERE APPEARED TO BE SOME SORT OF UNKNOWN DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE WHICH CAUSED IT TO COMPLETELY DRAIN OF OIL. OIL COVERED THE ENTIRE AREA OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT UNDERNEATH THE CASING. THE MECHANICS AT THE SHOP WERE UNABLE TO GET THE ENGINE TO TURN AT ALL. THE VEHICLE JUST HAD A FULL SERVICE AT THE DEALERSHIP ON 4/24/2015 INCLUDING: OIL & FILTER CHANGE, FUEL INDUCTION SERVICE, REPLACE ENGINE AIR FILTER, REPLACE CABIN AIR FILTER, ROTATE TIRES, CHECK BRAKES, CHECK EXHAUST, SUSPENSION, BELTS, AND HOSES, TOP OFF ALL FLUIDS, AND MULTI-POINT INSPECTION. AT THAT TIME THE CAR WAS NOTED IN PERFECT WORKING CONDITION AND NO ISSUES WERE ANNOTATED. THE ESTIMATED COST TO REPAIR THE ENGINE IS BETWEEN $9,000 AND $10,000, BUT THE REPAIR SHOP HASN'T FULLY ASSESSED THE DAMAGE TO THE REST OF THE VEHICLE. I KEPT DRIVING THE CAR AND HEARING THE SAME NOISE. I TOOK IT TO MEINEKE TO GET AN OIL CHANGE NOVEMBER 14, 2012. DROVE THE CAR APPROXIMATELY 3 WEEKS AND STILL HEARD THE NOISE. I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER HYUNDAI DEALER . THEY SAID THE CAR DIDN'T HAVE ANY OIL AND MEINKE FORGOT TO PUT THE DRAIN PLUG BACK IN, THEREFORE IT MESSED UP THE ENGINE, AND THAT'S WHY I HEARD THE NOISE. I KEPT TELLING THEM, I HEARD THE NOISE BEFORE THE OIL CHANGE. I TOOK IT BACK TO MEINKE AND SHOWED THEM THE PAPER HYUNDAI GAVE ME, THEY GAVE ME MY MONEY BACK AND APOLOGIZED. I THEN TOOK THE CAR TO WHERE I PURCHASED IT AND SAME THING. THEY SAID TO TRY A GAS ADDITIVE 3 TIMES, IF THAT DOESN'T WORK, GET AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST IN MY AREA WHERE I LIVE. I NEED MY CAR FIXED AND NO ONE WILL FIX IT. HYUNDAI BLAMES MEINEKE AND MEINEKE BLAMES HYUNDAI. THEY'RE SAYING BECAUSE OF NO ENGINE LIGHT ON, THEY CAN'T SEE THE PROBLEMS, BUT ONE DEALER SAID IT WAS THE ENGINE ANOTHER SAYING GAS PROBLEMS. BOTTOM LINE, IF THE FIRST HYUNDAI DEALER HAD KEPT MY CAR, I WOULDN'T BE GOING THROUGH THIS. HOW CAN I RESOLVE THIS? *TR
WHILE DRIVING MY CAR A "CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM" DISPLAY APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD. THE CAR TURNED OFF AS I EXITED THE HIGHWAY AND I HAD TO PULL OVER ON THE RIGHT SHOULDER. IT LATER STARTED AGAIN BUT SHUT DOWN AFTER SLOWING DOWN FOR TRAFFIC ON THE HIGHWAY. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO RESTART THE CAR IT WOULD JERK UNTIL REACHING SPEEDS ABOVE 30-40 MPH. *JS
I WAS DRIVING ON A BUSY LOS ANGELES FREEWAY WHEN THE "CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM" LIGHT CAME ON AND A CHIME BEGAN TO SOUND. MY CAR TOTALLY SHUT DOWN AND LOST ALL POWER. I WAS STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY FREEWAY IN WHAT WAS A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. THE BATTERY INDICATOR WAS AT THE HALF WAY MARK, WHICH IS THE NORM FOR THE CAR. I WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHO TOLD ME THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. I HAD TO CALL HYUNDAI CORPORATE TO GET HYUNDAI TECHNICIANS TO LOOK AT THE CAR. THEY SAID THAT A TEAM OF TECHNICIANS REPAIRED THE CAR AND THAT IT WAS FIXED. EXCEPT THAT IT HAPPENED TO ME AGAIN LAST WEEK ON A BUSY PARKWAY. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY UNSAFE CAR THAT PUTS OCCUPANTS IN VERY DANGEROUS CIRCUMSTANCES. IT IS IN FOR REPAIRS AGAIN, BUT I WILL NOT TRUST THAT IT IS FIXED. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE IT. *TT
THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED IN A THUNDERSTORM: "CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM" WARNING LIT UP AND ALARM SOUNDED. CAR LOST POWER. HAD TO PULL OFF ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. RESTARTED THE CAR AND IT WAS FINE. CALLED DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD IT WAS "WATER ON THE SERPENTINE BELT AND NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT." SECOND INCIDENT WAS APPROX. 1 WEEK LATER WHEN THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON ALONG WITH THE "CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM" LIGHT AND ALARM AND CAR LOST POWER. I PULLED OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. TURNED CAR OFF AND RESTARTED. THIRD INCIDENT, A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER, "CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM" ALARM. SAME SCENARIO. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP. THEY CONDUCTED A SYSTEM DOWNLOAD TO ONBOARD COMPUTER. NOW IT IS A DAILY OCCURRENCE. COULDN'T GET OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY TODAY AFTER RESTARTING THE CAR 4 TIMES. WILL BE CONTACTING DEALERSHIP TOMORROW. *TT
THE SUN VISORS ARE NOT LONG ENOUGH (VERTICALLY) TO PREVENT THE SUN FROM HITTING CENTER OF WINDSHIELD AREA AND BLINDING DRIVER. I'VE HAD TO STOP SEVERAL TIMES TO REGAIN MY CONTROL AND MY CLEAR VIEW. THE CAR WAS PURCHASE ON 12/19/10 AND AT THE TIME I NOTICED THAT THE SUN SHIELD THAT THEY SOLD ME AT THE DEALERSHIP WOULD HARDLY STAY IN PLACE BECAUSE OF THE VERTICAL SHORTNESS OF THE SUN VISORS BUT WHEN THE HOUR WAS CHANGED TO DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME IS WHEN I REALLY REALIZED THE SEVERITY OF THE PROBLEM AT THE TIME OF THE SUNSET. EVEN RAISING THE DRIVER'S SEAT ALL THE WAY UP IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO AVOID BEING BLINDED BY THE SUN; IT'S AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. I HAVE NOTIFIED THE CONSUMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF HYUNDAI BUT HAVE NOT RECEIVED A REPLY. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE.
THE STEERING PULLS TO THE LEFT, & SOMTIMES TO THE RIGHT. I HAVE TO STRUGGLE TO KEEP THE CAR FROM CROSSING THE CENTER LINE WHILE IT PULLS TO THE LEFT. STEERING HAS WANDERED SINCE CAR WAS NEW. FEELS UNSAFE TO ME. I TOOK CAR BACK TO DEALER AT 949 MILES. THEY DID RE=ALIGNMENT CAR STILL PULLS, TOOK CAR BACK 3 MORE TIMES TO DEALER FOR SAME STEERING PULL, DEALER ACKNOWLEDGES THE SEVER PULL, THEY INSTALLED A FACTORY SUGGESTED CAMBER KIT, CAR STILL PULLS & WANDERS. THIS CAR IS UNSAFE & SHOULD HAVE A RECALL.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE CONTACT SMELLED AN EXTREMELY STRONG TOXIC ODOR EMITTING FROM THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. THE ODOR DID NOT SUBSIDE AT ANY TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER THREE TIMES. THE TECHNICIAN ATTEMPTED TO CORRECT THE FAILURE BY PLACING COFFEE GROUNDS IN THE TRUNK, ON THE FRONT AND REAR PASSENGER SEATS AS WELL AS THE DRIVERS SEAT BUT TO NO AVAIL. THE DEALER OFFERED TO TRADE THE VEHICLE FOR ANOTHER HOWEVER, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER DID NOT ADHERE TO THE AGREEMENT. THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT CONCERN OF A POTENTIAL HEALTH AND SAFETY HAZARD. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 11.
SINCE PURCHASING VEHICLE LAST WEEK IT DRIFTS TO THE LEFT. DEALER DID ALIGNMENT BUT STILLS PULLS TO THE LEFT. I HAVE CONTACTED HYUNDAI AND I AM WAITING FOR A RESPONSE. *LN
