SUSPENSION:FRONT:SPRINGS:COIL SPRINGS

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011 Elantra vehicles manufactured November 12, 2010, to March 31, 2011, and Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, to February 28, 2010, originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Road salt may corrode the front coil springs, possibly resulting in the coil springs fracturing.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front coil springs, free of charge. Interim notifications were mailed on November 17, 2015. The recall began on January 6, 2016. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 133. Note: Vehicles that were previously registered in salt belt states but are currently registered elsewhere are eligible to be inspected and repaired.

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at approximately 65 MPH, the vehicle started swerving in the lane to the right and the left. The contact heard an abnormal thumping noise from underneath the floorboard. The contact stated that the power steering and brakes functioned as needed. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the rear cross member needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V354000 (Suspension). The failure mileage was approximately 162,000.

AIR CONDITIONING DRAIN DRIPS ONTO FRONT SUB FRAME, WHICH HOLDS THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION. IT ALSO HOLDS THE SUSPENSION BOLTS. DRIPPING FROM AIR CONDITIONING DRAIN IS CAUSING SUB FRAME TO RUST, ROT OUT AND WEAKEN PREMATURELY. THIS WILL CAUSE THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION TO DROP OUT OF THE VEHICLE WHEN THE SUB FRAME COLLAPSES.

The contact pulled over and checked underneath the driver’s side front of the vehicle and became aware that the coil spring had detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 102,000.

The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer where she was informed that her vehicle was not covered under warranty or recall. The contact then took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle with a fractured front coil spring. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V629000 (Suspension). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided the contact with the same information as the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, AN ABNORMAL SOUND WAS HEARD UNDER THE VEHICLE AFTER GOING OVER A BUMP IN THE ROADWAY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START INTERMITTENTLY WITH THE FUEL SYSTEM AND CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED AND DETERMINED THAT THE FUEL SYSTEM AND MAP SENSOR WERE FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE FUEL SYSTEM WAS REPLACED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STRUTS WERE NOT INSPECTED. CRAIN HYUNDAI LITTLE ROCK (11701 COLONEL GLENN ROAD, LITTLE ROCK, AR 72210 (501) 604-1500) WAS CONTACTED AND CONFIRMED THERE WERE NO RECALLS WAS UNDER THE VIN. THE CONTACT MENTIONED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V629000 (SUSPENSION) AND 18V934000 (ENGINE, FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE) AS POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO THE FAILURES HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT TO CONTACT NHTSA TO PLACE A COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 139,000. INVALID VIN.

HYUNDAI SONATA 2011 WHEN DRIVING THROUGH BUMPS OR A SMOOTH SERVICE IT FEELS AS IF THE CAR IS GOING TO FALL APART. SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR IT HAS A CLUNKING AND RATTLING SOUNDS UNDERNEATH AND A FEW REPLACEMENTS HAS BEEN DONE BUT IT STILL FEELS AS IF ITS LOOSE UNDERNEATH. THE CAR HAS GONE THROUGH MANY RECALLS PLUS WAS OUT OF SERVICE FOR ABOUT 3 MONTHS FOR ENGINE REPLACEMENT. THE DRIVER SIDE OF THE CAR IS NOT ALIGNED AS IT SHOULD. THE BEST PART IS WHILE DRIVING THE ENTIRE INNER COVER OF THE WHEEL ON THE DRIVER SIDE FELL OFF, AND ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT WHILE HAVING MY CHILD IN THE CAR. ENGINE WAS RECENTLY REPLACED. WHILE DRIVING THE CAR HAS NO TYPE OF ACELLATOR PICK UP. WHEN TURNING LEFT IT SOUNDS LIKE A CRANKING NOISE "CLUCK, CLUCK, CLUCK" ITS HORRIBLE. I HAVE THIS CAR IN AND OUT OF THE SHOP PLENTY OF TIMES SINCE I FIRST PURCHASED IT BUT MY THEORY IS THAT I PURCHASED A LEMON CAR BUT APPARENTLY BECAUSE THE MILES IT DON'T QUALIFY. WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS ON THE US 101 NORTHBOUND INTO SAN FRANCISCO MY 2011 SONATA SUDDENLY BEGAN VEERING OUT OF ITS LANE AND WAS HARD TO STEER OR CONTROL. I WAS ABLE TO BRAKE AND STEER JUST ENOUGH TO GET TO THE RIGHT HIGHWAY SHOULDER WITHOUT HITTING ANYTHING AS THERE WERE NO CARS IMMEDIATELY TO MY RIGHT. I WAS STUCK ON A DANGEROUS PART OF THE HIGHWAY SHOULDER FOR AN HOUR WAITING TO BE TOWED, WITH THE VEHICLE SEEMING DANGEROUS TO DRIVE TO A SAFER SPOT. WHILE WAITING FOR A TOW ON THE HIGHWAY SHOULDER I WAS ABLE TO LOOK AT THE REAR-LEFT WHEEL WHICH WAS INCLINED INTO THE WHEEL-WELL AT ABOUT 30 DEGREES ON THE TOP SIDE. AFTER GETTING TOWED OFF THE HIGHWAY THE TOW-TRUCK DRIVER WAS ABLE TO LOOK UNDER THE CAR AND NOTICED THAT THE UPPER REAR CONTROL ARM OF THE BACK LEFT WHEEL HAD BROKEN. THE BACK LEFT WHEEL WAS LOOSELY MOVEABLE USING JUST OUR HANDS. THIS FAILURE COULD HAVE CAUSED A MUCH MORE SERIOUS ACCIDENT! I AM WAITING TO GET A FULL INSPECTION REPORT FROM A MECHANIC.

THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR LIGHT BULBS KEEP ON GOING OUT. HAVE CHANGED THEM ABOUT TEN TIMES IN ONE YEAR! I CANNOT CHANGE THEM ANYMORE AS THE PLASTIC CASING HAS MORPHED BY THE HEAT OF THE FUSE CONNECTOR TO THE BULB! THERE ARE TWO BULBS ROLLING IN THE CASING AS THEY CAME OFF WHEN TRYING TO EXTRACT AND REPLACE. ALSO I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY LIGHTS ILLUMINATE ON MY DASHBOARD, EVEN WHEN MY ENGINE WAS KNOCKING DUE TO SHAVINGS IN ENGINE (THAT WAS REPLACED, THANK YOU). LASTLY, HAD TO REPLACE MY SHOCKS AND STRUTS THIS YEAR AND WAS TOLD BY MECHANIC AT BIG O TIRE THAT THEY CONTACTED HYUNDAI DIRECTLY AS THEY RAN INTO AN ISSUE WITH REPLACING WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CORRECT STRUTS. THEY WERE TOLD THIS PARTICULAR CAR WITH ASSOCIATED VIN HAS THE 'GOOFY' STRUTS!!! I'M SORRY BUT I DIDN'T PAY A GOOFY PRICE FOR THE CAR!

I WAS DRIVING MY 2011 SONATA AT A SLOW SPEED IN A PARKING LOT WHEN I HEARD THE SOUND OF METAL HITTING THE GROUND UNDERNEATH MY VEHICLE. I WALKED OUT TO FIND A FRACTURED FRONT PASSENGER SIDE SPRING COIL WHICH HAD COMPLETELY SNAPPED OFF. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC HAD THIS HAPPENED ON THE BUSY INTERSTATE WHICH IS WHERE I WAS HEADED. I REALIZE MANY OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE WITH THE 2011 SONATA IN "SALT BELT STATES". I AM IN WISCONSIN. THIS DEFECT IS REFERENCED UNDER HYUNDAI RECALL 133, THOUGH I, LIKE MANY OTHERS, HAVE A VIN THAT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, DESPITE THE NUMEROUS INCIDENTS OF THIS HAPPENING WITH VEHICLES OUTSIDE OF THE RECALL VIN RANGE. CLEARLY THESE ARE NOT ISOLATED DEFECTS. THIS IS A POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT COULD EASILY PUNCTURE A TIRE AND RESULT IN DEATH IF IT OCCURS AT A HIGH SPEED. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE FOR THIS PROBLEM TO BE IGNORED BY HYUNDAI. THE RANGE OF VINS AFFECTED BY THIS DEFECT IS LIKELY MUCH BROADER THAN HYUNDAI HAS TAKEN RESPONSIBILITY.

THE FRONT DRIVER'S SUSPENSION SPRING BROKE OFF AT LOW SPEED, BUCKLING THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE BECAME DISABLED AS THE BODY CAME AND REMAINED IN CONTACT WITH THE WHEEL. IT COULD HAVE LED TO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THE TIRE COULD HAVE BEEN PUNCTURED IF IT WAS TRAVELING AT A HIGH SPEED. THERE IS A RELEVANT RECALL: 15V629000 (ON 2011 ELANTRAS AND SONATAS, FRONT SUSPENSION SPRINGS COULD CORRODE AND SNAP IN COLD REGIONS), BUT HYUNDAI SAID THAT IT DOES NOT APPLY TO THIS VEHICLE. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT MANY VIN#S MIGHT HAVE BEEN MISSED IN THIS RECALL NOTICE. ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE MANAGER, THAT RECALL# ONLY INSTALLS TUBING AROUND THE SPRINGS SO THAT IN THE CASE OF SPRING FAILURE(SNAPPING), THE BODY WILL NOT COME IN CONTACT WITH THE WHEELS OR PUNCTURE TIRES. THAT IS, THE RECALL WORK STILL ALLOWS THE SPRINGS TO SNAP. BUT, IS THIS CORRECTIVE ACTION SUFFICIENT FOR A SAFETY RECALL THAT IS THIS SERIOUS IN NATURE? TAKE CAUTION AS MANY 2011 HYUNDAI ELANTRAS AND SONATAS COULD RUN INTO THIS SUDDEN FAILURE.

I LOOKED ONLINE AND FOUND THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS PART IN THE "SALT BELT STATES" SO I CALLED HYUNDAI. HYUNDAI TOLD ME MY CAR WASN'T UNDER THE RECALL BECAUSE IT WAS MADE AT A DIFFERENT FACTORY. IT'S VERY CONCERNING TO ME THE NUMBER OF OTHERS WHO HAVE BEEN IN THE SAME SITUATION AS MINE. THE POTENTIAL FOR SERIOUS HARM TO MYSELF, PASSENGERS AND ANYONE ELSE ON THE ROAD WAS VERY HIGH. THIS IS CONCERN FOR ME BECAUSE WE TAKE ROAD TRIPS AND HAVE TO DRIVE A LONG DISTANCE TO GET TO WORK MYSELF AND HUSBAND WOULD LIKE TO FEEL SAFE. I LOOKED UP THE ISSUE AFTERWARDS AND FOUND RECALL 133 ON THE 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. HOWEVER, HYUNDAI ONLY COVERS 2011 SONATAS MADE BETWEEN DECEMBER 09 AND FEBRUARY 10, MINE WAS MANUFACTURED IN OCT 10. THEY ARE SAYING MY CAR IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR COVERAGE UNDER THIS RECALL, DESPITE THE FACT THAT MY CAR HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED TO HAVE AN ISSUE WHICH THEY HAVE ALREADY ACKNOWLEDGED IS AN ISSUE FOR THIS EXACT MAKE AND MODEL OF THIS VEHICLE. NO SEVERE DAMAGE HAS BEEN DONE YET, BUT IT HAS BEGUN TO HAVE RIPPLE EFFECTS, AS MY TIRES HAVE WORN SIGNIFICANTLY OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS, NO DOUBT DUE TO A MISALIGNMENT CAUSED BY THE FRONT COIL ISSUES. THIS ISSUE IS COVERED UNDER A RECALL THAT HYUNDAI PUT OUT FOR THE EXACT SAME YEAR AND MODEL, BUT YET THEY CLAIM MY CAR IS NOT ELIGIBLE DUE TO THE MANUFACTURER DATE. THIS IS THE SAME DEFECT MENTIONED IN THE DEC. 2015 RECALL CAMPAIGN #15-01-049 ENTITLED "INSTALLATION OF URETHANE PROTECTOR OVER FRONT COIL SPRINGS (RECALL CAMPAIGN 133)" IN WHICH ON PAGE 5, STEP 4 IT STATES "-INSPECT THE LOWER COILS OF THE SPRING FOR DAMAGE OR CORROSION. REPLACE AS NECESSARY, UNDER WARRANTY REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE, BEFORE COMPLETING THE RECALL PROCEDURES." HOWEVER, HYUNDAI STATES THAT MY VIN INDICATES THE CAR WAS MANUFACTURED OUTSIDE THEIR 2.5 MONTH MANUFACTURING RANGE AND IS NOT COVERED BY THE EXISTING RECALL. I SUGGEST THAT THE PROBLEM IS MORE EXTENSIVE THAN THEY HAVE ADMITTED AND ONLINE SEARCHES OF THE OWNERS FORUMS SHOWS MANY OTHERS WITH THIS SAME ISSUE. THE SPRING IS COMPLETELY SHEARED OFF AND FAILED WHILE IN MOTION ON A CITY ROAD. I CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY DECLINED TO ACKNOWLEDGE ANY KNOWN DEFECTS IN THE MANUFACTURING OR DESIGN OF THE COIL. NOTE, THAT WHILE MOST VEHICLES HAVE 3RD PARTY AFTER-MARKET OEM COILS AVAILABLE, THERE ARE NO THIRD PARTY MANUFACTURERS / RETAILS (I.E. MOOG, ETC.) I HAD MY HUSBAND INSPECT IT AND HE SAID IT MAY BE FROM THE FRONT COIL SPRING. WE IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE CAR TO OUR LOCAL MECHANIC AND HAD THEM INSPECT THE VEHICLE. THE MECHANIC CONFIRMED THAT IT WAS THE FRONT SPRING COIL THAT HAD ERODED AND FRACTURED. THE MECHANIC ALSO INFORMED ME THAT THE SPRING WAS UNDER RECALL. HOWEVER, WHEN I INQUIRED ABOUT THE RECALL, HYUNDAI MOTORS OF AMERICA INFORMED ME THAT MY CAR WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL NOTICE 133. WHILE DRIVING THE CAR I HEARD A METALLIC NOISE WHEN I HIT SMALL BUMPS/CRACKS IN THE ROAD. I PULLED OVER TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY. FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD I HEARD A BANG/POP AND A CLUNK. I THEN SAW A SMALL PIECE OF METAL FALL OUT FROM UNDER THE PASSENGERS SIDE OF THE CAR. I TURNED AROUND AND FOUND THE PIECE IN QUESTION. IT IS A PART OF THE FRONT COIL SPRING. I DID SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND FOUND THAT HYUNDAI HAS A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM. I CALLED THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER CARE LINE AND WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR DID NOT FALL UNDER THIS PARTICULAR RECALL. MY CAR WAS MANUFACTURED 4/28/10 AND THE CARS BEING RECALLED WERE MANUFACTURED BETWEEN 12/11/09 AND 02/28/10. I CALLED THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE REPAIR WOULD COST $529.00. I WAS TOLD THAT BECAUSE OF MY MANUFACTURE DATE, THAT MY CAR IS NOT COVERED. I ASKED HIM IF THE SPRINGS INVOLVED IN THE RECALL WERE DIFFERENT THAN THE ONES IN MY CAR? HE SAID HE DIDN'T KNOW. IF THERE IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THESE SPRINGS BREAKING AT WHAT POINT DID HYUNDAI SWITCH TO A DIFFERENT SPRING? MY CAR WAS MANUFACTURED WITHIN 2 MONTH OF THE EFFECTED VEHICLES, MY ASSUMPTION IS THE SPRING IN MY CAR IS THE SAME SPRING THAT IS IN THE RECALLED VEHICLES. HYUNDAI DID NOT KNOW THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE SPRING UNTIL 10/2014..... HOW MANY VEHICLES HAVE THE EXACT SAME SPRING INSTALLED AS THE "OFFICIAL" RECALLED VEHICLES? THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND HYUNDAI HAS A CURRENT RECALL FOR IT, MY VEHICLE SHOULD BE REPAIRED UNDER THE SAME RECALL, I'M SURE IT HAS THE SAME BROKEN SPRING AS THE OTHERS.

THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT TIRES WORE UNEVEN (CUPPING) PRODUCING A LOUD SOUND AS SPEED INCREASED. THESE TIRES WERE REPLACED WITH NEW TOYO PROXES TIRES, WHICH EVENTUALLY WORE THE REAR TIRES IN THE SAME MANNER PRODUCING UNACCEPTABLE TIRE NOISE. THE CURRENT (THIRD SET) OF NEW TIRES, HANKOOK 727'S, HAVE APX. 20K MILES AND HAVE STARTED TO WEAR THE REAR TIRES IN THE SAME (CUPPING) PATTERN. THE DEALER WAS MADE AWARE OF THIS YEARS AGO DURING A MAINTENANCE VISIT. HE SUGGESTED REPLACING THE TIRES AND ROTATING THEM EVERY 5K MILES. THIS SUGGESTION IS NOT A SATISFACTORY FIX. OUTSIDE OF THIS PROBLEM THE CAR IS PERFECT. HOWEVER, REPLACING TIRES BEFORE THEY'RE WORN OUT IS TOO EXPENSIVE. TIRE REPLACEMENT OFF-SETS THE FUEL EFFICIENCY RATING THAT PROMPTED THE PURCHASE OF THIS CAR! NOT ONE OF THE 3 SETS OF TIRES ON THIS CAR GOT CLOSE TO THE MANUFACTURERS MILEAGE RATING! A NEW SET OF TIRES MOUNTED AND BALANCED IS MORE THAN $1,000.00. GIVEN THE COST OF TIRES, THIS CAR IS MORE EXPENSIVE TO OPERATE THAN MY OTHER CAR, A V8 PERFORMANCE SEDAN WHICH AVERAGES 19MPG. I'M NOT HAPPY WITH THE TIRE WEAR SITUATION AND I'M CONSIDERING A REPLACEMENT VEHICLE DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. DRIVING AND HEARD A LOUD "BANG" AND FELT VIBRATION FROM FRONT OF CAR. THE STEERING BECAME VERY DIFFICULT AND CAR WAS ALMOST UNCONTROLLABLE. PULLED OVER TO SIDE OF ROAD, EXITED VEHICLE AND COULD SEE CAR WAS SITTING VERY LOW TO GROUND ON FRONT PASSENGER SIDE, TIRE WAS FLAT AND COULD SEE INTERIOR SIDE WALL WAS SHREDDED. REPLACED THE TIRE WITH SPARE AND DROVE APPROX. THREE MILES TO TIRE DEALER AS WE SUSPECTED IT WAS ONLY A TIRE FAILURE AT THAT TIME. THEY LOOKED AT CAR AND STATED THAT THE COIL SPRING HAD BROKEN AND HAD CUT THE TIRE. SUBSEQUENTLY HAD CAR TOWED TO DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS. HAD BEEN DRIVING CAR EARLIER IN DAY WITH NO APPARENT ISSUES AND HAD NOT HIT ANY POTHOLES OR OTHER ROAD HAZARDS THAT WOULD HAVE BROKEN A COIL SPRING. THERE WERE NO ISSUES WITH ROAD CONDITIONS AT THE POINT OF INCIDENT EITHER. EXTREMELY CONCERNING THAT THIS WOULD FAIL WITH NO INDICATION OF ANY ISSUE WITH SUSPENSION/STEERING SYSTEM. THIS SEEMS LIKE A PREMATURE TIME FOR A COIL SPRING FAILURE. THE CONTACT SAID IT BECAME LOUDER WHEN THEY DROVE OVER A BUMP OR MADE A RIGHT TURN. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND AFTER INSPECTING IT, THE DEALER STATED THEY COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 6,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO PULL TO THE RIGHT AND LEFT DIRECTION ABNORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER SIX TIMES FOR THE IDENTICAL FAILURE. THE REPAIRS PERFORMED CONSISTED OF THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE STRUT REPLACEMENT, TIRE ROTATION, TIRE BALANCING AND ALIGNMENT. THE FAILURE PERSISTED AND ALL FOUR TIRES WERE REPLACED BUT TO NO AVAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,800 AND THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
