Your 2019 Santa Fe is burning through oil much faster than normal — you're adding oil every 2,500-3,000 miles between changes to keep the engine from running dry. This started after the turbo was replaced under warranty in October 2024, and the problem has gotten worse; recently, your oil was completely depleted after just 2,000 miles, causing the engine to shake and the check engine light to come on. The dealership is running diagnostics to identify the cause, which may require engine service or replacement.

Your 2019 Santa Fe has been burning oil excessively since 85,000 miles, and you reported this problem multiple times to the dealership before your warranty expired at 100,000 miles. In December, your engine failed on the highway with a hole in the intake valve and a valve that wasn't seating properly—the dealership initially misdiagnosed it as spark plugs and coils, but later confirmed you need new intake valves and engine rebuilding. Hyundai is asking you to pay for repairs that may involve replacing intake valves, rebuilding engine components, and potentially addressing piston issues causing the oil consumption.

Your engine is burning oil at an abnormal rate, requiring you to add oil between service intervals. A check engine light came on while driving on the freeway, and your engine began stalling, shaking, and shutting off when idling. Diagnostics revealed a cylinder leak and lack of combustion in the engine. This issue may require a full engine replacement, and similar problems have been reported in other vehicles of the same year, make, and model.

Your engine is burning through oil much faster than normal. When you took your car in for an oil change in October 2025 and mentioned a burning smell during quick acceleration, the technician found no oil on the dipstick. Just one month later in November, the oil level was already extremely low again. Your dealer is running an oil consumption test and has scheduled a full engine replacement for January 2026.

Your engine is burning through oil much faster than normal—you're losing about 1 quart per week. The dealer confirmed through testing that your engine needs to be replaced, but they're only covering 60% of the repair cost and asking you to pay the remaining 40%. This appears to be a known issue affecting multiple vehicles of this model year.

While driving on the interstate, your car suddenly started shaking and the check engine light came on. The dealer diagnosed it as a compression loss in cylinder 2, which requires engine work. Hyundai determined this isn't covered under warranty, leaving you with a significant repair bill at over 100,000 miles.

Your engine is consuming oil much faster than normal — the oil warning light comes on within 1,000 miles of an oil change, and when you check it, the oil is completely gone. This means your engine is running without proper lubrication, which can cause metal-on-metal damage inside the engine. You've taken the vehicle to the dealer four times and they've replaced hoses and the oil pan, but the problem persists. The fix will likely require diagnosing the source of the leak or excessive consumption, which may involve replacing internal engine seals, gaskets, or other components.

Your Santa Fe is consuming 1-2 quarts of oil every week, which is excessive and not normal. This level of oil loss can damage your engine and potentially cause it to fail while you're driving. You'll need to have the engine inspected to identify the source of the leak or internal damage causing this consumption.

Your engine is burning about 1 quart of oil for every 5,000 miles, even though Hyundai recommends oil changes every 7,500 miles. This means you're losing oil faster than normal between service intervals. You'll need to check your oil level regularly and top it off between scheduled maintenance to prevent engine damage.

Oil consumption on vehicle engine leading the engine to run low on oil for extended periods of time
Yesterday afternoon after running errands, my car was off and in my driveway. Within 15 minutes I noticed it was smoking. When I opened the hood. The engine was on fire. I attempted to put it out but was unsuccessful. 911 was called and responded to put the flame out. The car was destroyed. I recently had my engine resealed and turbo replaced at a Hyundai dealership. I picked up my car following repairs on April 18th.
One cylinder of the engine is misfiring. When I bought it used in 2021, I realized it had a problem. At red lights or stop signs, the car would randomly not accelerate when it was time for me to go. I would have to turn it off, then on; shift to park then drive; or mash hard on the gas for the car to recover. For example, it happened at these days and times in 2024 (I didn't write down every time since ownership began): 1/24/24 and the key icon lit up; 3/14/24 at 9:20 am; 4/20/24; 7/19/24; 8/7/24; 8/18/24; 8/21/24 at 10:40 am; 8/25/24; 8/27/24; 9/7/24 at 12:30 pm and 3:21 pm; 9/12/24 at 10:38 am; 9/20/24; 9/21/24 at 1:43 pm; 9/23/24 at 7:38 am; 11/12 at 9:36 am; 10/26/24; and 10/27 at 4:37 pm. It was scary! I took the car to the Hyundai dealership in September 2022 and in October 2022 for this issue and the alert that Forward Collision Assist warning wasn't working. I was told both time that they didn't know why the first happened and recommended I replace the entire bumper for the second (it's no longer happening and I did not replace the bumper). I reported it to Hyundai Customer Care and nothing happened. The car also required 4-5 quarts of oil every 2000 miles. I believe these were precursors to what happened this month. On April 5, 2025 the car completely stopped while I was driving on the highway. I added oil and it chugged to an oil change shop where the diagnosis was a problem with coil 3 in the engine. I went to an auto parts store and replaced coil 3, and the car chugged just enough for me to get home. I had a tune up and the mechanic put Heet in the gas tank in case it was a fuel injection issue. The car didn't improve so I took it to another mechanic who diagnosed a misfire in the third cylinder as well, and the spark plug in the third spot looked brand new though the other three showed a bit of wear from the few days I used the car. He told me the engine problem was serious and needed a dealer's examination. I will go to the dealership on 4/17/25.
The contact owns a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while attempting to accelerate from a stoplight, the vehicle failed to respond. The Auto START/STOP feature failed to restart the engine as designed. The contact stated that the Turbo light was illuminated as if the turbo was activated, even though the contact had not activated the feature. The vehicle was taken to a Certified mechanic who determined that the turbo had failed. The turbocharger was replaced. After the vehicle was repaired, the failure reoccurred while the vehicle was idling or parked. There were no warning lights illuminated. The dealer was informed of the failure however, the vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The failure mileage was 90,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated while at a red light, the vehicle stalled. The failure had occurred on several occasions. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
This has been an ongoing issue since the date of purchase 10/23. I've been taking my vehicle for regular check ups and oil changes. My vehicle appears to be consuming oil. I have to put a quart in every week, but no one can find the issue. The dealership told me there is a recall on these particular vehicles engine.
2019 Santa Fe, this vehicle was serviced by Hyundai three times for a "Knock Sensor" notification. 12/3/2019: ECM manufacturers recall 14,242 miles 7/13/2021: Knock Sensor hardware notification - 38,615 miles 12/15/2024 repaired 1/7/2025: Knock Sensor hardware notification – 79,882 miles Panel indicating motor issues, vehicle becomes unable to accelerate above 60 mph. We have documented communications between dealers and Hyundia corporate with case#
SUV driving great for 2 years with routine maintenance- engine light pops up, doesn’t go away, and i take it to a local shop. SUV has low oil pressure of 5 and needs replaced. No sounds or driving issues prior.
CRANK SHAFT SEAL LEAK ON A 44700 2019. HOWEVER THERE IS A RECALL ON THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR. THEREFORE WHY WOUL THIS CAR NEED A SEAL WITH THIS YESR AN LESS MILEAGE. SOMEONE NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS. BECAUSE THE DEALER WANTS 2448.00 TO FIX THIS.
There is a system in the car that starts and stops engine, supposedly only at lights to save on fuel. Mine has stopped in the middle of a highway on my way up to Tahoe. Luckily I had just left light and only driven enough to reach the speed of about 10 miles per hour so the cars behind me were able to stop and not hit me. I had to completely turn the car off, put in park and restart car to get it to operate. It has stalled out like a stick shift would if not handled properly, but it is an automatic transmission, on numerous times. Sometimes this will cause the vehicle to completely shut down and sometime it will sputter for a few minutes and then slowly pick speed up and stop. The IGS button to turn this feature on and off when you get into the vehicle will sometimes stay off (not supposed to) and sometimes turn back off as it is supposed to each time the vehicle is turned on or off. It doesn't register as a recall, but I have done my research and saw that at one point you guys had done an investigation into this exact problem with my car. It doesn't show up on diagnostic and it doesnt do this every time I drive. So I have no way to show mechanics the isues. But this puts my life and anyone in my cars lives at risk. Not to mention any cars behind me if this happens on the highway again. I dont know what to do :( Can you please help me?
Oil Pan leaks after an oil change. Oil pan has a hairline crack just below the drain plug after normal tightening of the plug. Excessive oil was found on my driveway. No obvious engine damage, considering the vehicle was only moved from one spot to the other. The dealer stated the oil pan isn't covered under warranty. I simple internet search revealed there was a high number of complaints. It was a "Do It Yourself repair." The cost to fix was to replace the oil pain, new tools and 5 quarts of oil.
Engine Failure. Engine stalls during deceleration. If it doesn’t stall while braking, it immediately stalls around 5 mph when I come to a stop sign or red light. Vehicle start/stop button will not work to start the vehicle back up. It is to sit for 10-20 minutes and then it will start. If I don’t let it sit, it gives me a message on the dash that the vehicle is already on/running even though it is not. I have done regular maintenance and have had it serviced 4 times for the same issues. It has 126,000 on it. The dealership said it was the oxygen sensors and spark plugs. We had those fixed and the problem continued. The dealership is now wanting me to pay $11,000 for a used motor to be installed. Check engine light keeps repeating oxygen sensor malfunction. This has been happening since July of 2022.
While driving, the engine stalled out/cut off while the car remained on. I had to push the brakes completely to re-engage the start button. The engine turned off and the check engine light came on, but turned back off once the engine restarted. The car never turned off when the start button was pressed, just the engine.
The contact owns a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that on various occasions while driving at various speeds with the automatic START/STOP function activated, the vehicle started losing motive power while the brake pedal was depressed. The contact stated that the failure recurred while driving from a complete stop. The vehicle was able to restart. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed that the valve cover gasket needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Additionally, the contact stated that the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) warning light was intermittently illuminated. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,500.
Car just stopped working one day. First oil on spark plugs got them changed then the coil packs now oil is on the air filter. Car drivers really hard and doesn't shift properly. Took dealership and they aren't really helping or even trying to diagnose my car.
I purchased a pre-owned certified 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe from a Hyundai dealership on 10/13/2020 and the vehicle had 21,770 miles. Then on 10/25/2021 (vehicle mileage was 31,950), I was driving my vehicle on the onramp to i-10 West lanes at Gessner Road. As I was accelerating at 40 mph to enter the freeway, my car engine seized and immediately I lost the ability to accelerate since the engine died. I immediately pulled over and had my car towed to the local Hyundai Dealership, HUB Hyundai Mitsubishi West. The Hyundai Dealership Service Manager, Daniel Castillo (832-739-6353), inspected my vehicle and after an inspection of the engine/underside of the vehicle, Hyundai found no damage or impact on the vehicle or the underside of the vehicle besides a missing drain plug. Their analysis concluded that the full result of the mechanical issue with the engine was a result of the missing drain plug which caused the oil to leak from the engine. Hyundai denied the warranty on the engine citing due to the drain plug issue is a direct result of a third party, Brake Check, that recently changed the oil (See attachment). The Brake Check Store #545 (11564 Westheimer Road, Houston TX 77077) had conducted recent oil changes performed on the vehicle on 12/8/2020 when the vehicle had 24,300 miles and on 5/5/2021 when the vehicle had 27,681 miles. I filed a claim (#3419328-1) with Brake Check for the damages however after 5 months of correspondences I was denied since I could not prove they did anything and the drain plug was missing. I also tried to file a claim with my personal auto insurance carrier, Progressive, however I was denied since the claim did not involve an accident. There was no warning lights that ever appeared on my dash prior to the incident. However, when I did go home that evening, I noticed a fresh large oil stain on my driveway were my car had previously be parked. The oil stain just occurred that day (See attached photo)
The contact owns a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while at a complete stop with the auto engine Start/Stop feature activated, the vehicle would intermittently shut off upon depression of the accelerator pedal with several warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact would be forced to turn off the vehicle and open the driver’s side door to reset the vehicle; after multiple attempts, the engine would restart and resume normal operation. The contact had taken the vehicle to two separate dealers, Freehold Hyundai (4065 US-9, Freehold, NJ 07728) and Greg May Hyundai (1501 TX-340 Loop, Waco, TX 76712)] on multiple occasions but neither dealer was able to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and provided a case number. The contact was referred back to the dealer for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
On 3 different occasions my vehicle has not restarted at a stop light after the idle stop and go feature turned the car off. I can’t to a complete stop, the car went into idle mode, then wouldn’t restart when I hit the accelerator again. I put on my hazard lights so cars could go around me and all the lights on my dash were flashing, brakes would not engage and it took several attempts to restart the car. The car has also not turned on 4 times when I first get in and go to start it. All the dash lights go on then as well and takes several attempts to start the car. I took it to the dealer and they could not find any issues. It is scary to drive as I fear it not starting after coming to a stop and being stuck on a main road.
Was driving and the car started stuttering. When I came to a stop the car would not move, a message flashed across the dash saying something about the auto stop feature was active and I had to put the car in park or neutral in order to drive again. Has happened numerous times almost daily. In order to stop this from happening you have to remember to turn the auto stop feature off.
The engine stalled while driving on highway at 65 miles per hour. When I tried to push the gas the vehicle was resisting to speed. When I took a nearest exit, the car suddenly jerked and slowed on its own without me pressing any brakes. Somehow I managed to drive to a nearest parking area and called for assistance. When it jerked and slowed suddenly the person behind me honked so hard. May be the person barely missed hitting my back of the car. It was a scary experience.
The car engine completely shuts off while driving multiple times. While driving on highway and the streets the car just stops almost causing an accident. In order to get the car off the road we had to move it physically off the road.
Stop / Start does not engage at stop light. Dealer finally replace battery and battery cable. This did fix problem. I understand this could be a starter problem and or software problem. The battery does not charge above the 70% required to engage stop /start.
THE IDLE DOWN FEATURE STOPPED WORKING SEVERAL MONTHS AGO. NO CHANGE IN HOW THE ENGINE RUNS WHEN WE GET TO A STOP SIGN OR TRAFFIC LIGHT. WHEN WE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP MAYBE IN FEBRUARY, THEY SAID THEY HADN'T SEEN THE PROBLEM YET. MY WIFE FOUND AN ARTICLE ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND IT SAID THAT SEVERAL CARS HAD CAUGHT FIRE OR STALLED IN TRAFFIC. TAKING IT TO THE DEALER ON 5/4/2021. THE REAR POWER GATE ALSO HAS STARTED MALFUNCTIONING. NOT SURE IF THEY ARE RELATED AS OF YET.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2019 HYUNDAI SANTA FE. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT 65 MPH, A THICK, GRAYISH SMOKE ENTERED THE VEHICLE CABIN FROM THE REAR, PASSENGER SIDE WITHOUT WARNING. THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF THE INVESTIGATION. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN DESTROYED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 41,000. *BF CONSUMER FILED A CLAIMED WITH U-HAUL THEY SPOKE TO HYUNDAI AND HYUNDAI BLAMES ON WIRING HITCH BECAUSE IT WAS INSTALLED AFTER PURCHASED.*JB
I HAD THIS ISSUE SINCE I GOT THE CAR, ONLY THE ISSUE HAS OCCURED PROGRESSED MORE AS MONTHS WENT BY. NOW AT 21,000 MILES, ENGINE MAKES A RATTLE SOUND FOR 2-3 SECONDS DURING COLD STARTUP AND THEN GOES AWAY. ONLY HAPPENS WHEN ENGINE IS IN A COMPLETE COLD-STATE (EARLY MORNING) OR NOT DRIVEN FOR A FEW HOURS.
WHEN SITTING AT RED LIGHTS, THE ENGINE COMPLETLEY SHUTS OFF. I HAVE TO PUSH THE PUSH START AT LEAST 10 TIMES BEFORE THE ENGINE WILL RESTART. THIS KEEPS HAPPENING. I'M WORRIED I WILL GET STRANDED. I WOULD LIKE TO LEAVE IT WITH HYUNDAI SERVICE, BUT TO MY UNDERSTANDING THEY DO NOT OFFER RENTALS. MY VEHICLE ONLY HAD 16000 MILES WHEN THIS ISSUE BEGAN. I PAID 38000 FOR THIS VEHICLE AND NOW TO MY UNDERSTANDING, TO HAVE IT SERVICED I WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR THE RENTAL. MY SAFELY SHOULD BE MORE OF A CONCERN. HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA SHOULD BE VERY CONCERNED. THEY SHOULD HAVE REQUESTED A TOW AND OFFERED A RENTAL AS SOON AS I MENTIONED THIS ISSUE!!! NO, INSTEAD I HAVE TO LEAVE IT AT THE DEALER IN HOPES THE ISSUE IS FOUND QUICKLY, SO I DON'T RUN UP A HUGE RENTAL BILL PLUS PAY MY MONTHLY CAR NOTE. WHAT IF MY VEHICLE JUST SHUTS DOWN GOING 65 ON THE FREEWAY? WILL I HAVE BRAKING POWER? I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. I COULD BE IN MAJOR DANGER.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2019 HYUNDAI SANTA FE. WHILE DRIVING 17 MPH, THE BCA BRAKING SYSTEM ENGAGED, THE VEHICLE LOST POWER, AND ALL THE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND BACK ON, WHICH RETURNED IT BACK TO NORMAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO O'BRIEN HYUNDAI FT MYERS (2850 COLONIAL BLVD, FORT MYERS, FL 33966, (239) 880-8631) WHERE IT WAS TEST DRIVEN FOR APPROXIMATELY 77 MILES; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED THE CONTACT WITH CASE NUMBER: 16693618 AND A LOANER VEHICLE. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA ID NUMBER: 10167260. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 16,000.
PREVIOUS HYUNDAI VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE. AT THE TIME THE CAUSE WAS UNKNOWN. WAS FORCED BY HYUNDAI TO BUY BACK VEHICLE AND PURCHASED A BRAND NEW HYUNDAI VEHICLE. I WAS NEVER TOLD THAT THIS WAS A BRAND WIDE ISSUE AND THAT THE NEW VEHICLE I PURCHASED WOULD END UP UNDER THE SAME RECALL THAT CAUSED PREVIOUS VEHICLE TO CATCH FIRE. I AM TERRIFIED TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI TO EXPLAIN THE SITUATION AND HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH AN UNPROFESSIONAL CUSTOMER REPRESENTATIVE. I AM FEARFUL FOR MY LIFE IN THIS VEHICLE AND EXPLAINED WHEN I PURCHASED THE NEW ONE THAT I DID NOT WANT TO EVER GO THROUGH THIS SITUATION AGAIN.
THIS IS A REPORT ON A 2019 HYUNDAI SANTA FE 2.0L TURBO WITH LESS THAN 1600 MILES. THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF FUEL IN THE OIL. ALLOWABLE LIMITS ARE LESS THAN 2.0% FROM NORMAL CAUSES. THIS ENGINE HAS 3.3%, ENOUGH TO BE A PROBLEM.THE OIL LEVEL IS RISING ON THE STICK. THE 5W/30 OIL HAS BEEN THINNED TO THE CONSISTENCY OF 20W OIL. DEALER SHRUGGED IT OFF AND CLAIMED THAT DRIVING A 100 MILE TRIP WOULD RETURN ALL TO NORMAL.
