NHTSA Campaign: 20V061000

Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2007-2010 Elantra and 2009-2011 Elantra Touring vehicles. On February 21, 2020 Hyundai expanded the recall to include 46,425 model year 2007-2008 Entourage and 2007 Santa Fe vehicles. Moisture may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short.

Risk: An electrical short within the ABS Module may cause an engine compartment fire, even when the car is turned off, increasing the risk of an injury.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will install a relay in the vehicle's main junction box to prevent the risk of an ABS short-circuit while the car is turned off, free of charge. The recall began April 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 188.

NHTSA Campaign: 15V100000

Component: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Elantra vehicles manufactured June 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010, and 2009-2010 Elantra Touring vehicles manufactured November 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010. The electronic power steering (EPS) electronic control unit (ECU) may sense a discrepancy in the steering input signals and, as a result, disable the steering power assist.

Risk: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Hyundai will verify the proper operation of the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and update the EPS control unit, free of charge. The recall began April 14, 2015. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 127.

NHTSA Campaign: 13V113000

Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.

Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

NHTSA Campaign: 11V143000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE

HYUNDAI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007-2009 ELANTRA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 14, 2006, THROUGH NOVEMBER 1, 2008. THE FRONT PASSENGER SEATS IN THE VEHICLES CONTAIN A WEIGHT SENSOR DESIGNED TO DEACTIVATE THE RIGHT FRONTAL AIRBAG WHEN OCCUPANTS OF CERTAIN WEIGHTS OCCUPY THE SEAT. THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR FOR THE WEIGHT SENSOR IS LOCATED UNDER THE CENTER CONSOLE, BETWEEN THE FRONT SEATS. UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES THE CONNECTOR COULD BECOME CONTAMINATED AND MALFUNCTION SUCH THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG WILL DEPLOY REGARDLESS OF THE WEIGHT OF THE OCCUPANT.

Risk: THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG COULD DEPLOY IN CRASHES IN WHICH IT SHOULD NOT DEPLOY, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT FROM THE DEPLOYED AIR BAG.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A PROTECTIVE COVER OVER THE WEIGHT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM CONNECTOR TO PREVENT CONTAMINATION. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTING TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI'S CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

Your power steering suddenly stopped working while driving, and your EPS (Electric Power Steering) warning light came on. You've found information about a recall for your vehicle, but when you checked your VIN, no open recalls were listed—you're unsure if the recall was already completed or if your car isn't eligible. A technician will need to diagnose why your power steering system failed and determine if a recall repair applies to your specific vehicle.

Your steering wheel has become very stiff and hard to turn on multiple occasions since fall 2023, most recently in August 2024. When this happens, the red EPS (Electronic Power Steering) warning light comes on and your power steering stops working momentarily, making it difficult to control the car's direction. Even though your vehicle was already serviced for a Hyundai recall related to this issue, the problem keeps happening. The fix will likely require a dealership inspection and possible replacement or reprogramming of the electronic power steering system components.

Your power steering warning light came on when you tried to start the car, and you couldn't turn the steering wheel at all. Several other warning lights also appeared on your dashboard. You checked whether your car was part of a known steering recall, but your vehicle's VIN wasn't included in that recall campaign. The issue may require diagnosis of the power steering system's electrical components or motor.

Your power steering light came on about 3 years ago, and the dealer quoted $3,500 to replace the steering column. You declined the repair and had the light reset. Now the problem is happening again — while driving straight, your power steering cuts out intermittently before working again, and the power steering light stays on constantly. The issue may be related to a recall that was previously checked on your vehicle. Fixing this will likely require diagnosis of the electric power steering system and may involve replacing the steering column or related electrical components.

Your power steering failed shortly after purchase, and you took your car to the dealership for a recall software update. After nearly two months, the dealership was unable to complete the update and gave you 24 hours to pick up the vehicle. You may need to contact Hyundai corporate or seek service at another authorized dealership to resolve the EPS (electric power steering) recall.

Your power steering suddenly stopped working while driving at low speed, causing the red 'EPS' and 'EST' warning lights to come on. An independent mechanic found that your electric power steering module had failed and needed replacement, and discovered a related NHTSA recall for your vehicle. However, when you took it to the dealer, they said the recall only covered a software update to the module, not a full replacement, and the vehicle hasn't been repaired yet. Fixing this will likely require either replacing the EPS module or getting the software update installed, depending on what your dealer determines is needed.

When you tried to start your car, the battery was completely dead. As you turned the key off, something popped under the hood and thick smoke began pouring out from behind the engine. Even after disconnecting the battery, the smoke continued to get thicker, creating a fire hazard. The issue happened suddenly with no warning lights or previous signs of trouble.

Your car's electrical system is having multiple issues: the radio turns on and off by itself, heat blows through the vents even when the heater is off, the ABS warning light appeared during inspection but then worked normally, the airbag warning light stays on constantly, most of your dashboard lights don't work, and your door lock buttons only function intermittently.

Filed: Oct 2024

While parked in your driveway with the engine running, your driver's side airbag suddenly deployed without any collision or impact. This happened as you were engaging the parking brake after backing in. The airbag deployment could cause injury and indicates a serious malfunction in the airbag system.

CrashFiled: Apr 2024

Your 2009 Elantra was involved in a crash at approximately 22 mph when you lost control on an icy road and hit a light pole, causing severe front-end damage. Despite the significant impact, the airbags did not deploy, and you struck the steering wheel, resulting in serious injuries including back and neck injuries, bruised ribs, and facial injuries. The seatbelt locked up during the crash and required emergency personnel to cut you free. This complaint raises concerns about why the airbags failed to deploy in a crash of this severity.

Your brake and ABS warning lights came on when you started the vehicle. After the car sat parked for about 5 days, smoke began coming from under the hood and a fire broke out, which required the fire department to extinguish. Your vehicle was declared a total loss by insurance. The issue occurred around 100,000 miles.

Your 2009 Elantra caught fire while parked at your home, which was extinguished by the fire department. You received a recall notice (Campaign 20V061000) related to the hydraulic brake system, but the required repair part has been unavailable for an extended period, and the manufacturer couldn't confirm when it would be available. The repair likely involves replacing a faulty hydraulic brake component that was identified in the recall.

CrashFiled: May 2025

During a head-on collision at about 30 mph, your seatbelt ripped and failed to slow you down during impact. The airbag deployment prevented serious injury, but the seatbelt did not function as intended. Your insurance company will need to inspect the vehicle to determine if the seatbelt assembly was defective or damaged. A seatbelt replacement or webbing repair will likely be needed.

Filed: Oct 2024

Your car's rear subframe snapped while being driven due to severe rust and corrosion of the underbody, even though a corrosion recall was performed in 2014. The rust has spread beyond the parts covered in that recall to other critical underbody components like sway bars and backing plates that also affect structural integrity and safety. The dealership is only offering to cover the original recall repairs, not the additional rust damage to other components exposed to the same road salt and moisture conditions.

Filed: May 2024

Your airbag warning light stays on when you start the car and takes time to turn off, and your passenger airbag is disabled — you're concerned whether your airbags will work in an accident. You also experience jerking when accelerating at highway speeds (50-60 mph); the car doesn't speed up smoothly and requires you to release and re-press the gas pedal to continue accelerating, happening several times per drive.

Your brake pedal feels soft and requires pushing almost to the floor to slow the car down. After a master cylinder replacement didn't fully resolve the issue, your brake and ABS warning lights came on, and the dealership identified a faulty HECU (ABS control module) that may not work properly during bad weather or sudden stops. The repair estimate was over $3,200, and you weren't notified of any available recall for this known issue.

Your car has repeatedly lost all electrical power while driving at highway speeds, leaving you without power steering and stranding you multiple times. You've been without interior lights and radio for 6 months, and you've needed 8 belt replacements since March. This likely points to a serious electrical system failure, possibly with your alternator or battery, that's preventing the engine from staying running and powered.
