FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP

ON CERTAIN SEDANS, A SMALL AMOUNT OF WATER MAY HAVE BEEN LEFT IN THE FUEL PUMP ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR AFTER TESTING. THIS RESIDUAL WATER COULD CAUSE THE FUEL PUMP TO FAIL DUE TO CORROSION.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE FUEL PUMP. IF CORROSION IS FOUND, THE FUEL PUMP WILL BE REPLACED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JUNE 29, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SEDANS AND COUPES. THE HOSE CLAMPS ON THE FILLER NECK TUBE HAVE INSUFFICIENT CLAMPING FORCE.

Fix: DEALERS WILL CHECK THE HOSE CLAMPS FOR PROPER TORQUE AND TIGHTEN THEM CORRECTLY, IF NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JUNE 4, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009.

Your fuel pump stops working on and off, which causes your engine to shut off while driving. When this happens, you lose power steering and risk losing control of your car. This is a serious safety issue that needs immediate attention.

Your car has a strong gasoline smell, and you've found gas leaking from underneath near the fuel pump area in the back seat. When you removed the back seat, you discovered the fuel pump is sitting in a pool of gasoline with visible slow seepage coming from the top of the pump. This is a safety concern, particularly if you smoke in the vehicle. The repair will likely involve replacing the fuel pump assembly and inspecting the fuel tank for damage or corrosion.

UPON STARTING OUT AT A RED LIGHT ON A MAJOR STREET, ENGINE WENT TO FULL-THROTTLE, CAUSING A COLLISION TO THE CAR IN FRONT. OPERATOR THEN TRIED TO PUT CAR IN PARK, BUT INSTEAD WENT INTO TO REVERSE, CAR STARTED RAPID BACKING UP, THEN WENT BACK TO DRIVE AND HIT THE CAR IN FRONT A SECOND TIME. ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS IN PARK, IGNITION WAS SWITCHED OFF. VEHICLE WOULD NOT COME OUT OF PARK WITH THE IGNITION KEY ON, SO WAS STUCK IN TRAFFIC. RESTARTED CAR REMAINED IN FULL THROTTLE CONDITION. AUTO MECHANIC VERIFIED FAILED THROTTLE, $700 TO REPLACE THROTTLE, MINOR BODY DAMAGE.

APPARENTLY KNOW PROBLEM WITH LEAKING GAS/FUMES HONDA HAS NOT RECALLED MODELS AFFECTED WITH EXCEPTION OF HONDA ODYSSEY. MUCH OF MY RESEARCH EFFECTING 98-2002 MODELS. TSB'S ( TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN'S ) 01-011 ( EVAP CONTROL CANISTER VENT SHUT VALVE 98-99 MODELS ) AND 03-001 ( EVAP BYPASS SOLENOID VALVE 98-02 SINCE CODE AND DIAGNOSING PROBLEM IS DIFFICULT AND BASICALLY HONDA IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE THEY SHOULD BE RECALLING THESE VEHICLES AS LEAKING GAS/FUMES IS A SAFETY ISSUE.

THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO THE HONDA DEALER WHERE PURCHASED AND THEY VERIFIED PROBLEM. THEY SAID THEY HAD TO REPROGRAM THE COMPUTER BUT COULDN'T IDENTIFY THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. DESCRIPTION OF WORK THEY PERFORMED WAS "UPDATED VEHICLE PCM WITH HIM". SINCE THEY REPROGRAMMED THE COMPUTER THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN RUNNING GOOD. HOWEVER, I'M CONCERNED THAT THEY CAN'T DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM AND THAT IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. *NM

I PURCHASED THIS CAR BECAUSE IT WAS ADVERTISED AS A FUEL EFFICENT VEHICAL. THEY ADVERTISED 31 MPG IN CITY DRIVING 38-42 HIGHWAY. I HAVE HAD THE CAR FOR 4 MONTHS. NEVER USED THE AIR CONDITIONER. DROVE MODERATELY AND AM GETTING 19 MPG. I GUAGED IT BY THE NUMBER OF GAL. PUMPED NOT FROM GAS GUAGE IN CAR. I HAVE RECIEPTS AND A LOG OF ALL MILES AND GALLONS PUT INTO THE CAR. THE DEALER TESTED IT AND SAID IT WAS GETTING 26.3 DRIVING 10-30 MPH. I AM UNABLE TO GET EVEN THAT WHICH IS A SUBSTANCIAL AMOUNT DIFFERENT THAN THE AMOUNT ADVERTISED. I AM DISSAPOINTED AND FRUSTRATED WITH THE PERFORMANCE AND WOULD LIKE TO NOTIFY HONDA.
