I WAS APPLYING BRAKE PRESSURE AT LOW SPEED THROUGH A PARKING LOT , MADE A TURN TO PARK REVERSE, FOOT ON BRAKE PUT CAR IN REVERSE TO BACK UP, PUT FOOT LIGHTLY ON GAS PEDAL AND IT GAIN SPEED AND LURCHED FORWARD INSTEAD, OVER A CURB, UP AN SLIGHT INCLINE AND HIT LIBRARY WALL, AND STOPPED. AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. I AM SORE, IT WAS TOWED AND I PAY TO HAVE IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC TO LOOK AT NEXT WEEK.

I WAS APPROACHING A TRAFFIC LIGHT AT A SPEED OF ABOUT 35 MPH DRIVING MY HONDA ACCORD 2000 V6 ON JULY 13, 2013 APPROXIMATELY @ 2.00 PM EST. I WAS IN THE RIGHT LANE AND ALL OF A SUDDEN MY CAR ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN INCREASING THE SPEED TO APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH. SHOCKED BY THE RANDOM ACCELERATION, I APPLIED BRAKES TO STOP THE VEHICLE. AFTER STOMPING ON THE PEDAL IT WAS APPARENT THAT THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK . THEREFORE IN ORDER TO AVOID GOING TOWARDS THE TRAFFIC I DECIDED TO DRIVE INTO THE WOODS ON TO MY RIGHT SIDE. THE CAR CAME TO A STOP INSIDE A WOODED AREA 45 YARDS FROM THE EDGE OF THE RIGHT LANE KNOCKING OFF ALL THE TREES ON ITS WAY. IT DEPLOYED BOTH AIRBAGS IN THE FRONT. THE VEHICLE IS COMPLETELY DAMAGED ( TOTALED). THERE WAS NO INJURIES TO ME OR ANY OTHERS IN THIS CRASH. I FIRMLY BELIEVE & SUSPECT THERE WAS SOME MALFUNCTION IN THE VEHICLE'S SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM THAT RESULTED IN THIS MISHAP. I WAS TRAVELING IN REVERSE FOR APPROXIMATELY 50 YARDS AT A SPEED OF UNDER 5 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. MY PASSENGER WAS ABLE TO SHIFT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL AS I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE. THE CAR IDLED AT A HIGH RPM FOR 2-3 SECONDS AFTER IT STOPPED. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS SITUATION ON 4 OR 5 PRIOR OCCASIONS OVER THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS BUT THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED WHILE BACKING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS DEFECTIVE; IT WAS DISCONNECTED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO ADVISED HIM TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 163,252. 1. THE EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE: 133K MILES ON 2000 HONDA ACCORD, 4 DOOR, LX 4CYL, 5 SPD MANUAL TRANS. I'M THE ORIGINAL OWNER, PURCHASED IN NOV OF 1999. CAR HAS BEEN DRIVEN DAILY 15-30 MILES WITH NO PROBLEMS. REGULAR MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN PERFORMED. THE CAR IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. 2. THE FAILURE, HOW OFTEN IT OCCURS, IT'S CONSEQUENCES: ON 8/3/10, STARTED TO DRIVE TO WORK. AFTER 2 MILES, I CAME TO A STOP LIGHT. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, I ACCELERATED. WHEN I WENT TO SHIFT FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEAR, THE ENGINE OVER-REVVED - UP TO THE REV LIMITER, EVEN THOUGH I HAD TAKEN MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR IN ORDER TO SHIFT. I COASTED WITH THE CLUTCH DEPRESSED WHILE THE ENGINE "BOUNCED" OFF THE REV LIMITER FOR A SECOND. THEN I SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. I COULD NOT "UN-STICK" THE THROTTLE -WHICH WAS STUCK IN WOT (WIDE OPEN THROTTLE) POSITION. 3. WHAT WAS DONE TO CORRECT THE FAILURE; I.E, PARTS REPAIRED OR REPLACED (AND IF OLD PART IS AVAILABLE)? I TRIED TO LIFT THE THROTTLE OFF THE FLOOR, IT WAS STUCK. I REMOVED THE FLOOR MAT, WHICH MADE NO DIFFERENCE. I THEN OPENED THE HOOD. I COULD SEE THE THROTTLE CABLES WERE SLACK AND THAT THE THROTTLE BODY WAS STUCK. THE PART OF THE THROTTLE BODY WHICH HOLDS THE CRUISE CONTROL ACCELERATOR CABLE HAD BROKEN. WHEN I STEPPED ON THE ACCELERATOR, THE CABLE (NO LONGER HELD IN PLACE) FLOPPED FORWARD AND JAMMED THE THROTTLE OPEN. UNTANGLING THE JAMMED THROTTLE BODY, AND SECURING THE CRUISE CONTROL THROTTLE CABLE TO A LOCATION WHERE IT COULD NOT COME LOOSE, ALLOWED THE THROTTLE BODY TO WORK AGAIN. USED THROTTLE BODIES ARE AVAILABLE - $135 +/-. NEW THROTTLE BODIES ARE AVAILABLE $400 APPROX. LABOR IS 1-2 HOURS TO REPLACE. VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION. EASY FOR ME TO REPEAT THIS. I HAVE NOT REPAIRED THIS YET. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP - THEY WANTED TO SEE IT. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC, HE VERIFIED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY BROKE (FAILED) IN A TROUBLING WAY. *TR

AS I WAS PULLING IN MY GAS PEDAL STUCK AND JERKED MY CAR FORWARD INTO A CEMENT WALL. I WAS APPLYING THE BRAKES BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP. THE FORCE OF THE IMPACT THREW MY CAR INTO NEUTRAL FROM DRIVE, MY STEREO IS NOW SUNKEN INTO MY DASHBOARD, I HIT MY HEAD ON THE ROOF OF MY CAR AND MY KNEE WENT INTO THE DASHBOARD. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN. WE BOUGHT A NEW 2000 MODEL YEAR HONDA ACCORD IN NOV. 1999. AT 22K MILES (MAY-JULY 2001), THE GAS PEDAL GIT STUCK WHEN THE CAR WAS NOT USED FOR A WHILE, LIKE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING. WE HAD TO STEP ON IT HARD AND RELEASED QUICKLY. THEN IT WAS GOOD FOR THE REST OF THE DAY. WE REPORT THIS TO THE DEALER (LEITH HONDA). THEY FIXED IT AND I HAVE THE REPORT. A FEW MONTHS AGO THIS PROBLEM RE-OCCURED. WE HAVE ABOUT 44K MILES NOW. LEITH HONDA CHARGED ME $85 TO FIX IT. THEY DID NOT CHARGE US THE FIRST TIME. THEIR REASON IS THAT MY CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THIS STICKY GAS PEDAL PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY GASOLINE. THEY FURTHER CLAIMED THAT ALL OTHER VEHICLES HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM BECAUSE OF THE GASOLINE. THEY TOLD ME THAT I HAVE TO BRING THE CAR IT AND CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODY ON A REGULAR BASIS. OTHERWISE THIS STICKY GAS PEDAL PROBLEM WILL CONTINUE TO OCCUR. I HAVE SO MANY CAR IN THE LAST 25 YEARS AND NEVER HEARD OF THIS KIND OF NEWS. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY CAUSED BY THE STICKY GAS PEDAL. WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND ME TO DO TO FIX THE PROBLEM? THE ACCELERATOR STUCK AND I WAS UNABLE TO GET THE CAR TO SLOW DOWN. I ATTEMPTED PULLING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE, PUTTING THE CAR IN FIRST GEAR, AND APPLYING THE BREAK WITH NO RESPONSE. THIS INCIDENT WAS RECORDED ON A 911 CALL THAT I MADE DURING THE ENTIRE EVENT. I DID GIVE DETAILS OF WHAT I WAS DOING TO PREVENT THE CAR FROM ACCELERATING HOWEVER ALL MEASURES FAILED. I DID EVENTUALLY PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TURNED THE KEY TO GET THE VEHICLE TO STOP. HONDA IS NOW DENYING ANY MALFUCTION.*AK

THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE IDENTICAL WITH THOSE REPORTED FOR THIS VEHICLE IN ODI ID 89408 AND ODI ID 882677. CAN YOU ADVISE HOW THOSE PROBLEMS WERE RESOLVED. AMERICAN HONDA ADVISED ME THAT THEY HAD HAD NO COMPLAINTS SIMILAR TO MINE, WHICH OBVIOUSLY IS NOT CORRECT.
