I AM THE OWNER OF A 1999 HONDA ACCORD LX. I RECENTLY BROUGHT MY VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC FOR MY ANNUAL INSPECTION. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE FRONT SUBFRAME OF THE VEHICLE IS RUSTED THROUGH ON THE PASSENGER-SIDE, RENDERING THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THIS APPEARS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH THE POSITION OF THE AIR CONDITIONING DRAINAGE HOSE, WHICH DRAINS DIRECTLY ONTO THE SUBFRAME ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. FURTHER, THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE AMONGST 1998-2002 HONDA ACCORD VEHICLES. THIS ISSUE, WHICH RESULTS FROM A DESIGN FLAW, POSES A SERIOUS THREAT TO THE SAFETY OF ANY OCCUPANTS OF HONDA ACCORDS FROM THESE YEARS.
FRAME HAS RUSTED DUE TO AC DRAIN HOLE FROM THE EVAPORATOR. DUE TO WATER DRIPPING ON THE FRAME, FRAME HAS A BREAK CAUSING IT TO HIT THE BODY EVERYTIME YOU HIT A BUMP AND THE SWAY BAR IS CONNECTED TO THE PART OF THE FRAME THAT HAS BROKE.
AC DRAIN HOLE IS ABOVE THE FRAME OVER TIME IT CAUSED RUST AND NOW IT AND CRACKED, AND ALMOST HAS BROKEN COMPLETELY.
1999 HONDA ACCORD LX SUB-FRAME ON THE PASSENGER SIDE IS BEING RUSTED OUT, BETWEEN THE ANTI-SWAY BAR MOUNT AND THE LOWER CONTROL ARM TO SUB-FRAME BUSHING. IN CONTRAST, THE SAME AREA ON THE DRIVER SIDE IS IN GREAT SHAPE. THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT THE AC CONDENSATION DRAIN LINE DIRECTS WATER TO THIS SUB-FRAME SECTION ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. IT IS MAINLY A DESIGN FLAW THAT ONLY SHOWS UP OVER TIME. MECHANICS DEEM IT UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND COULD CAUSE A FATAL CRASH WHEN RUSTED OUT. HOWEVER, THE REPLACEMENT OF THE SUB-FRAME COULD COST UP TO SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS. HONDA SHOULD DO A RECALL TO HAVE IT REPLACED.
FRONT PASSENGER SIDE, REAR CHAMBER OF FRONT SUBFRAME RUST. REPORTS OF A/C DRAIN RESULTING IN RUST. DRIVER SIDE OF SUBFRAME, NO VISIBLE RUST.
MY ACCORD WAS MAKING A CLUNKING SOUND WHEN HITTING SMALL BUMPS AT ALL SPEEDS. THE SOUND WAS COMING FROM THE FRONT RIGHT OF THE VEHICLE AND WAS ANALYZED AS UNSAFE TO DRIVE UNLESS THE FRONT SUB-FRAME WAS REPLACED. THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT SUB-FRAME WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT AND WAS LOOSE FROM THE CAR'S BODY AND VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. OTHER AREAS OF THE SUB-FRAME HAVE MINIMAL RUST AND DON'T HAVE THIS ISSUE. MY MECHANIC HAS SEEN THIS ISSUE IN MANY OTHER HONDA ACCORDS IN THIS AGE RANGE AND SAYS IT'S CAUSED BY THE AC'S CONDENSER DRAIN THAT'S LOCATED RIGHT ABOVE THAT AREA OF THE SUB-FRAME. HONDA MOVED THE DRAIN LOCATION IN THE 2003/2004 MODEL. THE COST OF THE REPAIR IS IN THE $2500 AREA WHICH IS MORE THAN THE CAR IS WORTH. HONDA SHOULD HAVE ISSUED A RECALL FOR SUCH A MAJOR DESIGN FLAW.
I BOUGHT A 1999 HONDA ACCORD EX FOR MY NIECE. AFTER DRIVING IT TO GET TIRES, I HEARD A CLUNK/SCRAPING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, I NOTICE THE SUBFRAME IS RUSTED CLEAN THROUGH. RIGHT UNDERNEATH THE A/C DRAIN DRIP. THE CAR DRIFTS TO THE RIGHT. THE UPPER BALL JOINT IS COMPRAMISED. THE SWAY BAR MOUNT BOLTS RIGHT TO THAT AREA.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 HONDA ACCORD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE SUBFRAME HAD EXCESSIVE RUST. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE SUBFRAME WAS RUSTED DUE TO THE AIR CONDITIONING HOSE LEAKING. THE SUBFRAME NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.

TOOK MY 1999 HONDA ACCORD TO A HONDA DEALERSHIP FOR ROUTINE OIL CHANGE & MULTI-POINT INSPECTION ON 2/16/15. I WAS TAKEN INTO THE GARAGE AND SHOWN A HOLE ABOUT 2" ACROSS IN THE SUBFRAME NEAR THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL WELL. I WAS ADVISED THAT IT WAS DUE TO SALTY ROADS AND RUST. THE VEHICLE WAS FLAGGED AS "UNSAFE TO BE DRIVEN" BY THE HONDA DEALERSHIP AND I WAS ADVISED TO EITHER REPAIR OR STOP DRIVING THE VEHICLE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I WAS TOLD THE FRAME COULD DROP DOWN OR CAUSE THE ENGINE TO COME INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT IN THE EVENT OF A FRONT END CRASH. COST TO REPAIR WAS ESTIMATED AT $1600. DEALERSHIP SAID I COULD NOT SELL THE CAR WITHOUT DISCLOSING THE DEFECT. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID THE CAR WOULD ONLY HAVE SCRAP VALUE AT $350-500 AS NO ONE WOULD PUT THE NECESSARY REPAIRS INTO A 16 YEAR OLD CAR. PREVIOUS COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN MADE TO NHTSA ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, WHICH HONDA REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE. THE SERVICE MANAGER SEEMED SURPRISED WHEN I SAID THIS WAS A "KNOWN PROBLEM" WITH THE '99 ACCORDS. *TR

I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC, HE SHOWED ME THE CRADLE/SUBFRAME ON THE PASSENGER SIDE RUSTED HEAVILY AND ALMOST BREAKING OFF. IN RESEARCHING ON THE INTERNET I SEE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 1999-2002 ACCORDS, DUE TO WATER LEAKING FROM AC CONDENSATION. THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED AS A SERIOUS MECHANICAL/FRAME ISSUE WITH POSSIBILITY OF BECOMING CATASTROPHIC. YES I HAVE HAD THE CAR FOR 11 YEARS BUT STILL I SHOULD HAVE BEEN ENTITLED TO NOT HAVING THE EMBARRASSMENT WHEN I TOOK GUESS OUT AND WITH MY NEIGHBORS THINKING I DON'T TAKE CARE OF MY CAR AS WITH FELLOW EMPLOYEES. SHAME FIRMS CAN'T STAND BEHIND "OH THERE AWARD WINNING" PRODUCT. I ALSO HAD SEVERAL ISSUES WITH THE TRANSMISSION THE SECOND YEAR AND IT TOOK 3 YEARS TO GET THAT RESOLVES, THEN THERE WAS A RECALL WITH A IGNITION PARTS THAT THEY FIXED AFTER THE CAR ROLLED INTO THE ROAD TWICE, AND IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE ODOMETER LIGHT YOU HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE THE DASH REMOVED - SAD. *TR

THIS IS LOCATED ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE NEAR THE STRUT ASSEMBLY, PRESUMABLY BENEATH THE AIR CONDITIONER DRAIN, AS NOTED BY OTHERS ON POSTINGS ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB. THE VEHICLE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION OTHERWISE, ESPECIALLY WITH VERY LOW MILES (77,000 MILES) I CONTACTED HONDA OF AMERICA AND THEY STATE THAT THE ROT IS NOT COVERED BY THEM. THIS WILL COST ME $1800 TO REPAIR. THERE IS NO OTHER ROT ON THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 77,000 MILES. MY MECHANIC SAYS IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. IT APPEARS TO BE THE RESULT OF A DESIGN FLAW RELATING TO THE LOCATION OF THE AIR CONDITIONER DRAIN. HONDA SHOULD BE MADE TO REPAIR THIS UNSAFE SITUATION. *TR

THE DEALER STATED THAT A NEW SUBFRAME WAS NEEDED IN ORDER TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 287,000.
A WELL MAINTAINED AND CARED FOR AUTO. ITS PAINT CAME OFF, OR IS DAMAGED. DAMAGE APPEARS AS THREE EACH SIX INCH WIDE STRIPES RUNNING THE LENGTH OF CAR. SIDE PANELS OF CAR NOT EFFECTED AND PAINT IN GOOD CONDITION . *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,016.

THIS IS JUST TO ENTER A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA ABOUT A SUBFRAME ISSUE ON THIS MAKE/MODEL/YEAR CAR. I UNDERSTAND THERE HAVE BEEN OTHER COMPLAINTS ON THIS BUT NOT ENOUGH AT THIS TIME TO INVOLVE A RECALL. WE WERE NOT IN AN ACCIDENT BUT BROUGHT THE CAR IN BECAUSE OF NOISE. WE DID HAVE TO HAVE OUR SUBFRAME REPLACED IN MAY BECAUSE IT WAS RUSTED OUT AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS. IT COST $2410.10 (ACTUALLY PART OF THIS COST WAS FOR A BALL JOINT REPAIR AS WELL - PERHAPS A COUPLE OF HUNDRED OF THE TOTAL WAS FOR THAT). THE COST WAS FOR A USED SUBFRAME. A NEW ONE WOULD HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE. PERHAPS ENOUGH COMPLAINTS WILL BRING SOME ACTION ON THE SUBFRAME ISSUE. *TR
REPAIR SHOP SAID PASSENGER SIDE OF ENGINE SUBFRAME IS RUSTED OUT, REST OF SUBFRAME IS OKAY. THE IS APPARENTLY A VERY COMMON COMPLAINT FOR THESE CARS RELATED TO THE LOCATION OF A/C DRAIN HOSE. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS DESIGN FLAW AND SHOULD BE CORRECTED BY HONDA CORP. THESE VEHICLES SHOULD BE RECALLED IMMEDIATELY GIVEN THE MOUNTING EVIDENCE OF THIS FLAW BEFORE SOME POOR UNAWARE SOUL IS HURT. *TR
UPON INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE BY A CERTIFIED MECHANIC, THE SUB-FRAME : REAR BEAM - CROSS BEAM ( PART NUMBER 50200-S84-A00 ) WAS FOUND RUSTED AND UNSAFE. IT IS LOCATED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, NEAR THE REAR OF THE FRONT TIRE. THE SUB-FRAME COMPONENT IS RUSTED THROUGH ON THE TOP SIDE,WITH HOLES, LEAVING ONLY THE LOWER PORTION OF IT HOLDING THE ENGINE AND SUSPENSION IN PLACE. IT WAS DETERMINED A SAFETY ISSUE AND FAILED INSPECTION. LOOKS LIKE A DESIGN FLAW THAT COLLECTED WATER. EXPENSIVE PART AND REPAIR. HONDA IS NOT COVERING IT. THE REST OF THE UNDERCARRIAGE AND FRAME WAS IN GOOD CONDITION. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL DEALERS SERVICE DEPARTMENT, AND THEY SAID THAT THIS IS A DEFINITE SAFETY ISSUE, AND THE SUB-FRAME COMPONENT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. *TR
DURING THE REGULARLY SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE FOR THIS VEHICLE, I WAS TOLD THE SUB-FRAME HAD ERODED TO THE POINT WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. AS THIS WAS A NORTHERN CAR, I EXPECTED A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF RUST AND THERE HAD BEEN SOME PAINT CORROSION. THE MECHANICS STATED THEY HAD NEVER SEEN SUCH AN EXTREME EROSION OF THE SUB-FRAME AND SUGGESTED I CONTACT HONDA TO DETERMINE IF THIS HAD BEEN REPORTED AND RECALLED, PARTICULARLY SINCE IT HAD THE POTENTIAL TO BE SUCH A HAZARD. HONDA STATED THEY HAVE NOT HEARD OF SUCH DEFECTS AND THERE HAVE BEEN NO RECALLS. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THIS IS POSSIBLE SINCE THE SUB-FRAME SHOULD NOT RUST THROUGH, PARTICULARLY SINCE IT JEOPARDIZES THE INTEGRITY OF THE ENTIRE VEHICLE OPERATION. *TR

IT WAS DETERMINED A SAFETY ISSUE AND FAILED INSPECTION. LOOKS LIKE A DESIGN FLAW THAT COLLECTED WATER. EXPENSIVE PART AND REPAIR. HONDA IS NOT COVERING IT. THE REST OF THE UNDERCARRIAGE AND FRAME WAS IN GOOD CONDITION. *TR
WHILE CHANGING MY BRAKES, I NOTICED SIGNIFICANT RUSE ON THE VEHICLE SUB-FRAME. IT IS LOCATED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, NEAR THE REAR OF THE FRONT TIRE. THE SUB-FRAME COMPONENT IS RUSTED THROUGH ON THE TOP SIDE, LEAVING ONLY THE LOWER PORTION OF IT HOLDING THE ENGINE AND SUSPENSION IN PLACE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL DEALERS SERVICE DEPARTMENT, AND THEY SAID THAT THIS IS A DEFINITE SAFETY ISSUE, AND THE SUB-FRAME COMPONENT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE PART IS CALLED THE "REAR BEAM" (PART NUMBER 50200-S84-A00). TOTAL COST OF REPAIR ESTIMATE WAS ORIGINALLY $1400, BUT DEALER QUOTED $1100 DUE TO THE UNCOMMON OF THE REPAIR AND ITS SEVERITY IF THE PART WERE TO FAIL WHILE DRIVING. THE DEALER HAS RECENTLY SEEN ANOTHER VEHICLE OF THE SAME AGE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I SPOKE WITH ANOTHER LOCAL DEALERS SERVICE DEPARTMENT, AND THEY ALSO SAID THAT THIS TYPICALLY SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE DONE ON THE VEHICLE. IT WAS RECOMMENDED TO ME TO CONTACT THE AMERICAN HONDA SERVICE CENTER TO SEE IF THEY WOULD AT ALL ASSIST IN THIS SERVICE ISSUE. MY REQUEST WAS ESCALATED TO WALTER, THE EXECUTIVE TEAM MANAGER, AND HE INFORMED ME THAT THEY WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE WHATSOEVER. I PLAN ON GETTING THIS COMPONENT REPLACED BECAUSE I DO NOT WANT MY ENGINE AND SUSPENSION TO BECOME DETACHED FROM MY VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING, BUT FEEL THAT HONDA SHOULD BE AT LEAST PARTIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS SERVICE AS THE CAR IS 9 YEARS, 6 MONTHS OLD SINCE MANUFACTURED. THE VEHICLE SUB-FRAME SHOULD NOT RUST THROUGH. *TR
WE HAVE A BLACK 1999 HONDA ACCORD THAT HAS A SEVERE PAINT/CLEAR COAT ISSUE. WE HAVE TAKEN GREAT CARE OF THIS VEHICLE, KEEPING IT GARAGED AND WASHED AND WAXED ON A REGULAR BASIS. WE CONTACTED HONDA REGARDING THIS ISSUE AND THEY TOLD US THAT "IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY AS THE OWNERS TO TAKE CARE OF OUR CAR". THEY ALSO TOLD US THAT BECAUSE OF THE AGE OF THE CAR, PAINT ISSUES 'HAPPEN' AND THEY DON'T OFFER SERVICE ON THAT OLD OF A CAR. THAT IS RIDICULOUS. WE JUST HAD IT IN TO FIX THE IGNITION THAT WAS UNDER A RECALL, AND THEY TELL US THAT THEY DON'T OFFER SERVICE ON THAT OLD OF A CAR? MY WIFE AND I ARE EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED AT HOW WE HAVE BEEN TREATED OVER THIS. THE CAR HAS A DEFECT IN THE CLEAR COAT FINISH THAT WAS BACKED UP BY OUR LOCAL SERVICE TECH WHO SAID IT WASN'T SPRAYED ON THICK ENOUGH, THUS THE PROBLEM. *TR

'99 ODYSSEY--SLIDING DOOR FAILURE. SHORTLY AFTER BUYING THE CAR--PASSENGER DOOR FAILED--DEALER REPAIRED. THIS JULY--AGAIN. DRIVER SIDE SLIDING DOOR DOES NOT COMPLETELY SHUT--BUZZER SOUNDS CONTINUOUSLY. VERY SCARY WHEN GRANDCHILDREN RIDING IN CAR! INTERMITTENTLY WHEN DRIVING THERE IS A NOISE COMING FROM THE LOCKS. WHEN THIS OCCURS THE LOCKS BECOMES INOPERABLE. DEALER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *MR
WHILE CHILD WAS GETTING OUT OF VEHICLE WITH WITH NO WARNING SLIDING DOOR STARTS TO CLOSE CAUSING CHILD LEG STO GET CRUSHED IN BETWEEN THE DOOR, CAUSING INJURIES. DEALER WILL BE NOTIFIED. *AK
WHEN SHUTTING ENGINE OFF AND PULLING KEY OUT OF IGNITION, AUTOMATIC DOOR LOCK WOULD ENGAGE AND LOCK DOORS AS SOON AS CONSUMER PULLED ON DOOR HANDLE TO EXIT VEHICLE. CONSUMER WOULD THEN HAVE TO PUT KEY BACK IN IGNITION, UNLOCK DOORS, AND THEN EXIT VEHICLE. DEALER REPLACED MULTI PLUG SYSTEM ON 8 JUNE 2001. CURRENTLY, WHEN CONSUMER PULLS KEY OUT OF IGNITION AND PULLS ON DOOR HANDLE, DOORS LOCK AGAIN. CONSUMER HAS TO INSERT KEY IN IGNITION, SHIFT FROM PARK TO NEUTRAL, THEN ENGAGE THE UNLOCK DOOR BUTTON TO EXIT VEHICLE. CONSUMER HAS NOT CONTACTED DEALER ABOUT THIS NEW PROBLEM YET. *AK
