NHTSA Campaign: 20V026000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 1998 Acura 2.2CL, 1998-1999 Acura 2.3CL, 1998-1999 Acura 3.0CL, 2001 Acura 3.2CL and Acura MDX, 1998-2000 Honda Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Sedan, Odyssey and Acura 3.5RL, 1999-2000 Acura 3.2TL, 1996-2000 Civic Coupe, 1997-2000 CR-V, 1997-1998 EV Plus, and 1998-1999 Isuzu Oasis vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.

Risk: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.

Fix: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 or Isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727.

Your 1999 Honda Accord was involved in a crash after a front tire blew out at 40 mph. During the collision with another vehicle, your driver-side airbag did not deploy completely, and you sustained a shoulder injury from the seat belt. You received a recall notice (NHTSA campaign 20V026000) about airbags but have not yet contacted the dealer or manufacturer about it. The airbag and tire were replaced by an independent mechanic, but the vehicle has not been fully diagnosed.

Your 1999 Honda Accord is subject to a Takata airbag recall (NHTSA campaign 20V026000), but the replacement parts weren't available when you tried to get it fixed. You contacted Flow Honda in Winston-Salem and were told parts wouldn't be available until March 2021, which the owner felt was an unreasonably long wait. The recall repair involves replacing the defective airbag components with new ones once they become available from Honda.

Your air bag warning light came on, and mechanics found a bad connection in the front driver's side air bag connector that caused high electrical resistance. Your car made an abnormal sound from the front while driving. When inspected, your father found the sub-frame (the metal support structure under the front of your vehicle) was severely corroded. The corrosion appears to have been caused by air conditioning condensation dripping onto the sub-frame over time. Fixing this would likely involve replacing the corroded sub-frame and addressing the AC condensation leak.

Filed: May 2023

Your car's subframe — a structural component underneath the vehicle — is rusting and deteriorating. This is causing you concern about the safety and stability of your vehicle while driving. A mechanic will need to inspect the extent of the rust damage and likely replace the affected subframe sections or the entire subframe.

NHTSA #: 11521588

Filed: Dec 2020

Your car's passenger-side subframe, which supports the engine and suspension, may rust and deteriorate rapidly due to air conditioning condensation dripping on it. The owner noticed severe rust and rot despite applying rust inhibitors, eventually making the structural damage too extensive to repair economically. This issue appears to affect 1999-2002 Honda Accords. Fixing this would require replacing the subframe and addressing any underlying moisture or drainage issues from the air conditioning system.

criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: May 2021

Your car's engine randomly shuts off while driving without warning, forcing you to coast to the side of the road. After letting it sit for a minute, you typically need to restart it several times before it finally starts again. This happens about 95% of the time while you're driving (including on highways), and occasionally happens right after you start the car. This is particularly dangerous when it occurs in traffic, as you lose power steering and braking while coasting through multiple lanes.

While you're driving, your engine's RPMs suddenly drop to zero and the car shuts off completely — this can happen at a stoplight, in traffic, or anywhere. You've researched this issue online and found that it may be related to the ignition switch, and that there might be a recall for your car model. The fix will likely involve having the ignition switch inspected or replaced by a technician, and you should check with Honda or NHTSA to confirm if a recall applies to your vehicle.
