Owner Complaints (39)
Your engine's lifters failed, which destroyed the camshaft and required a complete rebuild of the top end of the engine at a cost of $8,500. This appears to be the same issue that was previously recalled on this model.

Your engine developed an abnormal tapping sound while driving, and your check engine light came on. A mechanic diagnosed the problem as failed valve lifters that also damaged your camshaft. Both the lifters and camshaft will need to be replaced to fix the issue.

Your truck unexpectedly entered limp mode (reduced power mode) while driving without any warning light appearing on your dashboard. A mechanic diagnosed the problem as a failed knock sensor. The issue occurred at around 209,000 miles. Replacing the knock sensor should restore your truck's normal performance.

Your engine failed at 250,000 miles, so you rebuilt it with a new GM crank. However, the engine only lasted 10,000 miles before the crank bearings failed because there wasn't enough clearance between the new GM bearings and crank. You discovered that GM is now only manufacturing the L87 crank (which has the same issue as the L87 engine recall) to replace your original L86 crank, forcing a second engine rebuild. The fix involved replacing GM-supplied bearings with aftermarket crank bearings that provided proper clearance.

While driving your 2017 GMC Sierra 1500, you heard a tapping sound from the engine and your check engine light came on. The engine then lost power and had to be towed to the dealer. The problem was diagnosed as a failed lifter rod, which was replaced to restore normal operation.

Your check engine light came on while driving at 40 mph, and you noticed the engine shuddering, vibrating, and making an abnormal ticking sound. A mechanic replaced your fuel injectors and a dealer reprogrammed them, but your engine still runs rough. The dealer suspects a connecting rod failure but hasn't opened the engine to confirm. The fix will likely require a full engine inspection and possibly internal engine repairs or replacement.

Truck was in park idling and it started to run really rough so I turned it off. Wouldn’t start again. Now it needs a new motor.
Lifters and rollers failed. Vehicle is at a repair facility and it has been confirmed that the rollers on the cam seized causing metal shavings to build up in the oil. No symptoms or warning lights showed up before the problem was identified.
My truck is currently experiencing the connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components that may have manufacturing defects that has lead to engine damage and engine failure. My truck is currently being looked at a shop for this exact issue. GM recently recalled more than 597,000 vehicles due to engine failures, according to you, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall however only lists vehicles within the years of 2021-2024. My vehicle has the same engine 6.2L V8 gas as the recall and I don't find it a coincidence that I have the same EXACT engine experiencing the same EXACT issue! I attempted to speak to GM but they just kept saying my vehicle is not listed on the recall and refuse to investigate this. I included my conversation with them.
Vehicle went into limp mode. 36 check engine codes popped up all related to cam shaft and lifter issues. Vehicle was taken to a shop and it has been determined that the passenger side lifters and rollers have sized due to the active fuel management system. This is the L86 GM 6.2 liter motor, that has developed the same issues that the L87 motor is being investigated for. There where no tail tail signs or check engine lights that were on prior the the lifter failure.
first we had coil issues then it turned out to be the lifters now we are being told we need a new 6.2l v8 engine.
The contact owns a 2017 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that on four separate occasions while driving at highway speeds, the vehicle shut off with the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that after each failure, the vehicle was towed to a dealer and the contact was informed each time that the failure was related to the active fuel management system. The manufacturer was notified of the failure after the first failure and the contact was informed that the repair would be covered under warranty. The contact stated that each time that the vehicle was towed to a dealer, the lifters and pushrods were replaced under warranty; however, the failure returned almost a month after each repair. After the most recent failure, the dealer pushed the manufacturer to replace the engine. The vehicle was repaired; however, the contact expressed a fear of driving the vehicle due to the repeated failures. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
#6 cylinder AFM lifter failure. Inspected by a technician.
On Friday, December 6, 2024, my “check engine light” illuminated on my 2017 GMC Sierra pickup. The engine is the gasoline version of the 5.3 liter. I took my truck to Brogden Buick/GMC in Olathe, KS. They informed me the trouble code was 219a, indicating there was a problem with the fuel/air ratio. On Monday, December 9, 2024, I was contacted and informed the fuel injectors needed to be replaced at a cost of approx. $2700. Based upon research I’ve conducted GM’s fuel injectors have been a service concern since approximately 2014. Service bulletin DCS5097 (N182198000-Special Coverage Engine Fuel Injector) was issued on July 26, 2019 that included my engine configuration. However, this particular bulletin does not appear to cover my Kansas based vehicle. I just had my vehicle at Brogden for a previous check engine light two weeks ago. This required replacing the fuel cell pressure sensor at just over $700. These repairs seem to be related. I’m reading that 2023 and 2024 Chevrolet and GMC trucks are also having fuel injector issues. This seems to be an ongoing problem that GM does not appear to be appropriately addressing. My truck is relatively low mileage with only 58,786 miles. It has never towed, is garage kept and is maintained in a pristine condition. I’ve never experienced fuel injector issues any any previously owned vehicle .
lifter going bad
The contact owns a 2017 GMC 1500 Denali equipped with Land Spider Tires, Tire Line: Wild Traxx, Tire Size: 35x121/2/R22, DOT: (N/A). The contact stated that while diving at various speeds and turning, the tires were rubbing against the sidewall. The coolant line blew out. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the thermostat and Oxygen sensor needed to be placed. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000. The tire failure mileage was 130,000.
The contact owns a 2017 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle unintendedly decelerated. The vehicle hesitated and was shaking abnormally while accelerating. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine had failed due to the pistons misfiring and then collapsing. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 99,000.
I took my 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE in to my local dealer because the engine was misfiring and there was a loud ticking noise coming from the engine. There was a sudden onset of loss of power, sluggish acceleration and shuttering. The dealership technicians did their diagnostics and found "cyl 1 miss fire removed valve cover and rocker arm found cyl 1 intake push rod bent replaced cyl 1 rocker arm push rods and all driver side lifters re[placed v loam resealed all 8 injectors cleared code miss fire is cured." This is a known GM issue as pursuant to service bulletin 15-06-01-002L. Upon further research from other complaints it was reveled to be caused by KNOWN defective or sub-par components being continually installed in GM vehicles. GM has knowledge of this issue and should take ownership of their shawty and deceptive work practices.
The contact owns a 2017 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle jerked and stalled with the check engine warning light illuminated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that there were no recalls on the VIN related to the failure. The contact was referred to the dealer for assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
At 48k miles with all service maintenance performed by GM dealer I experienced a ticking noise and loss of engine power. The vehicle was taken to dealership and I was told it was a lifter problem with no explanation of how or why this has happened. I was without a vehicle for 3 weeks. I picked up the vehicle and was told the vehicle was repaired only to still find the vehicle had hesitation while driving and still had a ticking noise in the engine. I returned the vehicle and am now told the engine needs to be replaced. I was also told that I am responsible for the cost of repairs. I found a class action has been filed against GM for this issue. I have been told that GM does not have a recall issued yet I was told at the dealership they have seen this happen and GM has a Service Technician report on how to fix this issue. At this time my vehicle is sitting at the dealership awaiting a response from GM to see if they will take any responsibility. My truck has been at the dealership since August 7, 2023. I have paid almost $2k and was told I would owe an additional $9300. to replace the engine. I do not have paperwork from the dealership to show service work performed. The dealership has not closed out my ticket however I have paid almost $2k for work performed. The dealership said that they matched the cost I have spent but I have no record of their costs.
Truck started to jerk if driven over 20 mph. Before this the dashboard (electric) notification showed truck heating up but the temperature gage was not reading any overheating. Prior to this the whole electrical system in the truck started to mess up. The radio changed channels without actually changing the radio channels. Unable to connect the Bluetooth because it calls my phone contacts at random. Had to get a new transmission that cost 5,000 and this was recent. The truck is still jerking but is drivable over 20 mph.
hard shift when taking off and excessive burning of oil
Misfire with code PO300, Ticketing from engine at higher RPM/lose power and seems to be misfiring. Check engine light would blink and then shut off. Four rockers found to be bent push rod. - Replaced right and left side lifters and guides. Replaced Vlom and 1 push rod. Dealer diagnose and repair. Lifter failure due to engine switching from V8 to V4. Very expensive and very common problem with this type of engine. Truck is young with only 74,000 miles on it. Had to replace the transmission at 70,000 also.
Over some time we had noticed a chirping / pulsating sound when starting the engine after it was fully cooled down. Cold start. This sound over the last few months has been increasingly getting worse. We asked our dealer to check things over and determine what could be the issue on a regular service visit for oil change. They could not find a reason but said a service visit with a full line mechanic would be needed to diagnose the issue. We did our own closer look and diagnosing just where the sound and smell of oil fumes or gases were coming from and found the Left side (drivers) rear / back cylinder exhaust manifold bolts to be broken off and gone. There are a total of 5 studs and the rear two had failed and gave away to now allow the exhaust manifold to leak exhaust fumes that are obvious in the cab at startup. This is a pretty major failure and safety problem we feel that GM needs to take action on and correct.
Greetings, he has a complaint from our consumers in the United Arab Emirates to the agent, and he is using incorrect oils in the atmosphere and nature of the region

PINHOLE LEAK IN A/C CONDENSER APPEARS TO BE A SYSTEMIC PROBLEM IN NUMEROUS GM VEHICLES UTILIZING THE SAME PARTS.
RADIATOR LEAK AT 55000 MILES REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF RADIATOR
RADIATOR LEAKING AND HAD TO BE REPLACED.
THERE IS A STRONG INTERMITTENT VIBRATION IN THE STEERING COLUMN WHEN AT SPEEDS OF 35-70 MPH. IT RESEMBLE DRIVING OVER "RUMBLE STRIPS"
MY TRUCK IS JUST OUT OF WARRANTY, BUT AFTER 3 YEARS ONLY 15,000 MILES. CHK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON, DEALER SAYS 3 BAD FUEL INJECTORS. DEALER HAS SEVERAL OTHER TRUCKS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. OBVIOUSLY A MANUFACTURE PROBLEM THAT I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY FOR. ALSO IS THIS AN EMISSION SYSTEM PROBLEM?
ON MAY 26, 2020, MY 2017 TRUCK'S CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED. VEHICLE IS IN ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY WITH 25,000 MILES, + OR -. TRUCK DRIVEN INFREQUENTLY DURING "STAY-AT-HOME PERIOD. THIS OUT OF TOLERANCE FUEL INJECTOR SITUATION HAS BEEN NOTED ON GM OWNER WEBSITES; IT IS NOT UNUSUAL. *TR
MY RADIATOR HAS DEVELOPED A LEAK AND COOLANT IS ESCAPING WHEN ENGINE IS HOT. THE ISSUE APPEARS TO BE VERY SIMILAR TO THE INCIDENTS WITH THE 2014-15 MODEL YEAR ISSUE. THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED TO BE A LEAKING RADIATOR NEAR THE TOP RIGHT SIDE BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. *TR
COOLANT LIGHT CONTINUES TO COME ON. I'VE HAD IT TO THE SHOP AND THEY SAY THAT IT IS A MANUFACTURING PROBLEM. HOWEVER THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO FIX IT. I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY CHEVY HIGH COUNTRY THAT HAS THE SAME 6.6 DIESEL ENGINE IN IT. THE MECHANICS ALL ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM FOR ALL OF THESE MODEL 6.6 DIESEL REGARDLESS OF WHETHER IT IS GMC OR CHEVY. THIS SHOULD DEFINITELY BE A RECALL. THE WARNING LIGHT CONTINUALLY COMES UP ON THE DISPLAY SAYING I AM LOW ON FLUID. HOWEVER, WHEN I CHECK IT IT IS ALWAYS FULL. THERE IS A HIGH CHANCE THAT IF IT IS LOW I WILL AUTOMATICALLY RESET IT THINKING THAT THE WARNING LIGHT IS NOT FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY. AGAIN, THE GM TEXT KNOWS THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM THROUGHOUT THE FLEET. AGAIN, THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL. IF YOU HAVE FURTHER QUESTIONS YOU CAN REACH ME AT [XXX] THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME, [XXX]. THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED IN JANUARY 2017, SINCE THE PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE, I HAVE HAD THE TRUCK IN THE SHOP ON 6 OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE HAS HAD 5 INJECTORS REPLACED AND THE UPPER OIL PAN GASKET HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE. GMC IS STALLING ME AND NOT WANTING TO PURCHASE THE VEHICLE BACK UNDER THE BUY BACK PROGRAM COMMONLY CALLED THE LEMON LAW. THE VEHICLE HAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AND I HAVE BEEN CHARGED A CO-PAY WITH THE REPAIRS ON THE VEHICLE. THE ISSUES STARTED AFTER THE 30000 MILE SERVICE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 GMC SIERRA. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHUTTER WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL DEALER (DONOVAN AND BAUER AUTO GROUP, 11579 HYDETOWN ROAD, TITUSVILLE, PA 16354), BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE LOCAL DEALER WAS ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE, BUT THERE WAS NO REMEDY TO CORRECT THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO NHTSA. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 2,000. *TT CONSUMER STATED TRANSMISSION-SHUTTERING FEELS LIKE ENGINE MISS. UPDATED 8/14/18*JB
NOTICED VIVID AND PERSISTENT ENGINE VIBRATION SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASE - WITH NO ASSOCIATED CHECK ENGINE CODE. VIBRATION HAPPENS AT ALL ENGINE AND AMBIENT TEMPERATURES (ESPECIALLY BELOW 50 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT), AT ALL ALTITUDES, REGARDLESS IF IN PARK, NEUTRAL, OR DRIVE. VIBRATION IS SO NOTICEABLE, YOU CAN WATCH THE WAVES VIBRATE THROUGH A CLASS OF WATER WHEN PLACED ON THE DASHBOARD. TAKEN TO TWO DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS AND BOTH HAVE STATED THE VIBRATION EXPERIENCED IS PER NORMAL DESIGN FOR 6.2L ENGINE. HARD TO BELIEVE GM WOULD DESIGN A $65K+ VEHICLE THAT PURPOSELY VIBRATES/SHAKES. ESCALATED THROUGH GM CORPORATE (SR# 8-3108393XXX), TO WHICH THEY CONFIRMED TRUCK IS RUNNING AS DESIGNED. SINCE THE ENGINE WAS NOT THROWING A CODE, NO FURTHER INVESTMENT/RESOLUTION WAS NEEDED ON THEIR END. THEIR SOLUTION TO ME...SELL THE TRUCK IF NOT HAPPY. OF COURSE THEY DID NOT SAY THAT, BUT THAT'S THE WAY I INTERPRETED THEIR RESPONSE TO MEAN. BUYER BEWARE.
THE VEHICLE WHICH HAS UNDER SEVEN HUNDRED MILES ON IT DOES THE FOLLOWING: WHEN I TRY TO ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE STARTS TO MISFIRE, STARTS TO CHUG AND JERK, IT STARTS TO HESITATE AND BECOMES ROUGH. WHEN I CALLED GMC SERVICE DEPARTMENT I WAS TOLD THERE WAS A CODE FOR THIS PROBLEM #PIP5457B BUT THAT CURRENTLY THERE IS NO KNOWN REASON AND NO KNOWN REPAIR AND NO KNOWN COMPUTER CODE TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. I TRIED TO MERGE ONTO THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AND NEEDED TO SPEED UP BUT THE TRUCK STARTED TO LURCH; I NEARLY GOT REAR ENDED. I CAN'T DRIVE UP A HILL IN THE CITY OR ON THE INTERSTATE AND KEEP UP WITH THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION STARTS TO SPUTTER. MY WIFE AND I ARE AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE. WE JUST PAID NEARLY $49,000 FOR THIS GMC SIERRA 2017 AND ONLY OWNED IT FOR ONE WEEK WHEN THIS STARTED TO HAPPEN. IT DOES THIS ALL THE TIME. VERY DANGEROUS!
