UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WHILE SLOWING DOWN (ROLLING WITH MY FOOT FEATHERING THE BRAKE) TO PARK IN A STALL AT MY LOCAL POST OFFICE MY 2008 FORD FUSION INSTANTLY ACCELERATED JUMP THE CURB CROSSED THE SIDEWALK AND HIT THE BUILDING. THE CAR CONTINUED TO REV SPINNING THE FRONT WHEELS UNTIL I SHUT IT OFF WITH THE KEY. I VERIFIED THERE IS NOTHING BLOCKING THE PEDAL AND THE FLOOR MAT IS SECURE AND CLEAR OF THE ACCELERATOR. I HAD MY FOOT FULL HARD ON THE BRAKES AND WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE CAR. FORTUNATELY, NO ONE WAS HURT.

THE PROBLEM INITIALLY BEGAN BECAUSE I HAD TO BRAKE HARD TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT ON THE FREEWAY AND THE BRAKES FAILED. AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE THE BRAKES WENT BACK TO NORMAL. A WEEK LATER AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN A STREET, I BRAKED NORMALLY TO PULL IN TO A BUSINESS PARKING LOT AND THE BRAKES FAILED ALMOST COMPLETELY. THE PEDAL WENT DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND WOULD NOT STOP THE VEHICLE IN A SAFE DISTANCE. ALSO, THEY HAD A SPONGY FEEL. THEY WOULD NOT PROPERLY GRIP UNTIL I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND THEN ON AGAIN. HAD THERE BEEN ANOTHER VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME I WOULD HAVE HIT THEM, OR IF THIS HAPPENED ON A LOCAL FREEWAY HERE IN HOUSTON, TX IT COULD BE POTENTIALLY FATAL. AFTER RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM, I LEARNED THAT MANY OTHER INDIVIDUALS HAVE HAD THE SAME EXACT ISSUE. THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE A FAULTY ABS MODULATOR.

WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE LURCHED, LOST POWER. WRENCH LIT UP ON DASHBOARD. HAD TO PULL OFF ROAD, TURN OFF CAR. WAITED 5 MINUTES, PROCEEDED WITH DRIVE. NO FURTHER INCIDENT OCCURRED. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THE REPAIR WOULD EXCEED IN EXCESS OF $900. WAS TOLD THE PCM OR THROTTLE BODY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.IF THERE IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH AN EXTENDED WARRANTY BUT NOT OUR VIN NUMBER, WHY WAS THAT WARRANTY NOT EXTENDED? AND WHAT ABOUT ALL THE PEOPLE DRIVING THESE CARS WITH THIS PROBLEM HAS ANYONE BEEN HURT YET? IF FORD DOESN'T WANT TO PAY FOR THE FIX THEY SHOULD AT LEAST GIVE PEOPLE A WARNING REGARDING THE ISSUE.

THE CONTACT TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE, BUT THE INDICATOR REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE VOLUNTARY RECALL FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13N03 (THROTTLE BODY). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 98,000.

FROM POLICE REPORT: "THERE WAS TIRE SCUFF AND SKID FROM FRONT RIGHT WHEEL/TIRE IN ROAD INDICATING A POWER-BRAKE WHEEL SPIN. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WITH CRUISE CONTROL SET TO 60 MPH WHEN THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON AND I HAD LIMITED POWER. I THEN PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND HAD TO TURN THE CAR COMPLETELY OFF. RESTARTED THE CAR AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE SO I THOUGHT. IT KEEPS HAPPENING. ONE OF MY FRIENDS TOLD ME THAT FORD HAS BEEN HAVING THIS PROBLEM SO I LOOKED IT UP AND SURE ENOUGH THERE ARE MANY THAT HAS HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM. I AM FILLING THIS OUT IN HOPES TO NOT ONLY GET MY VEHICLE FIXED BUT TO ALSO SAVE A LIFE! I HAVE A LITTLE ONE THAT RIDES EVERYWHERE WITH ME. THE CONTACT ENGAGED THE BRAKES HARDER BUT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 1 MINUTE, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL RELEASED AND THE CAR DROVE NORMAL. THE FAILURE HAPPEN THREE MORE TIMES AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP WHERE THE DEALER ADVISED HER THAT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS THE FLOOR MAT. THE SERVICE MANAGER TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE BUT COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT DID NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE VEHICLE SINCE THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. NEITHER OF THE VEHICLES SUSTAINED MAJOR DAMAGE AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THROUGH RESEARCH, HE DISCOVERED THAT THIS WAS A COMMON FAILURE AND BELIEVES THAT A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED BY THE DEALER OR A MECHANIC. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 21,000.
