Making a right turn I was startled by a vehicle running a red light. Front wheel passenger side cleared the curb. Right rear tire jumped the curb jolted back to ground. I looked at tire pressure gauges and no leaks were evident. Being on a single lane road I continued driving looking for a turn in place after traveling about a quarter of a mile an engine rattle developed and there was faint smell of smoke. I traveled another block and turned into a dollar general parking lot. The entrance was on an incline and the car stopped. I had just purchased a new battery a week before and had an oil change about 3 weeks before. The car refused to start. I called triple A and had it towed to dealer. They looked at car and could not come up with a rational reason and doubted car stopped because of violent rear contact with curb at right rear wheel was cause of engine seizing. I called USAA my insurance company their investigating agent agreed. My car is serviced at this dealer and I follow all of the maintenance guidelines I have the records as well as dealer. The car has 125,000 miles and has been well maintained. I am curious if there are any other reports this has happened with 2014 Ford Explorer or any other vehicle. I find it hard to accept such a violent jolt of the running engine did not cause something to fall loose on the running engine. The dealer and appraiser found the car oil full and in pristine condition. There was no frame damage.Turning the crank towards rear they hear metal falling into oil pan. Your thoughts?
VEHICLE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK CAR INTO MECHANIC AND FOUND OUT A CODE POINTS TO A PROBLEM WITH THE TIMING CHAIN/CAM POSITION SENSOR. PRIOR TO THE ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON CAR PREVIOUSLY HAD (2) RANSOM ISSUES THAT NOW AFTER GETTING THE DIAGNOSIS MAKES SENSE WHY THE CAR WAS AT TIMES MAKING A FLUTTER SOUND WHEN STARTING ALONG WITH THE ENGINE RANDOMLY AT TIMES ACTING LIKE TO WAS GOING TO STOP RUNNING WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. I TOLD FORD AND THE MECHANIC ABOUT IT PREVIOUSLY BUT THEY BOTH SAID AS LONG AS THERE'S NO ALARMS KEEP DRIVING IT. THE VEHICLE STILL DRIVES GOOD, BUT I WAS ADVISED NOT TO DRIVE IT UNTIL REPAIRS MADE. THE REPAIR IS $4,000.00 AND PUTTING THAT KIND OF MONEY INTO A VEHICLE THAT IS CURRENTLY VALUED AT $8 TO 10K WITH 136,000 BASED OFF MY RESEARCH IS NOT PRUDENT CONSIDERING OTHER THINGS THAT WILL EVENTUALLY NEED EXPENSIVE REPAIRS. I HAVE TAKEN GOOD CARE OF THE VEHICLE ALONG WITH KEEPING UP ON ALL SERVICES. DISCUSSED WITH A COUPLE EXPERIENCED FORD MECHANICS AND THIS REPAIR IS UNFORTUNATELY VERY COMMON. The vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics, where it was diagnosed that the A/C fan had caught on fire due to a stuck clutch bearing. The mechanics informed the contact that the radiator was damaged and was leaking due to the fire. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure. Water is leaking from front of engine and into oil from water pump being told it will cost 1600 to over 2000 dollars to fix
Fumes are leaking into the cabin of the car. Possibly issues with an exhaust leak that is causing nausea and headaches when driving vehicle.
Car was sitting idle when a fan inside the engine compartment starting being very loud. Sound went away when car started moving. Noticed coolant was empty. Filled with coolant and made a 5 mile trip. Checked again and coolant was empty again.
My car keeps running out of coolant yet I’m leaving no puddles anywhere
I own a 2014 Ford Explorer. When driving home on November 4th the engine coolant light came on and there was white smoke coming from under the hood and the coolant was leaking under the vehicle. I had the vehicle towed to my local mechanic who said that the water pump needs to be replaced. He does not do this type of work so I'm unsure if there is additional damage since he stopped his inspection there. I have to have it towed to another place. I'm seeing this same issue with many vehicles with the same make/model and felt it should be reported. I did contact Ford and made a complaint.
Repeated catalytic converter failure. Issue was repaired at least twice. Converter failure caused both turbos to need replacement and has now caused engine damage. This appears to be a common issue with this engine model.
Water pump coolant leak. I’m experiencing this problem and have seen that Fire has known about this issue and hasn’t recalled it and it’s causing engine failure and leaving consumers to fort the 2000 bill to fix since it’s internal. Does needs to recall and fix this issue and replace the pump.

Every time while accelerating and RPMs reach above 2500 the cab of the vehicle fills with an odor . After doing a lot of research we have come to realize it is carbon monoxide. There are several open law suits and complaints about this already. When we purchased the vehicle in May of 2021 it was taken to the Ford dealership and they told us everything in the vehicle was fine. The car is available for inspection at any point. No warning lights or anything have come on at all!
While driving my 2014 Ford Explorer from South Florida to Millegville Georgia the high temp Light came on and the engine slowed on I-16. Managed to get off The Interstate at Macon Ga. Almost caused accidents in traffic. Finally got to Ford dealer said water pump failed like so many others. $2600 estimate. End of my trip, had to rent car to get home car Still in shop in Georgia waiting for repairs.
Ford built the motor with a water pump when it leaks leaks right into the crank case where the oil is so the motor seizes up and that’s what happened to my car now my car is shot
IN 11-2022, (NOVEMBER 2022), I NOTICED NO HEAT IN CABIN AND AFTER FURTHER INVESTIGATION, FOUND LOW COOLANT IN THE COOLANT RESERVOIR. I ADDED COOLANT BUT STARTED NOTICING COOLANT LEAKS ON DRIVEWAYS. HAD VEHICLE CHECKED BY FORD DEALER, WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS BOUGHT NEW, AND REGULARLY SERVICED; AND WAS TOLD THAT THE WATER PUMP INSIDE THE 3.5L ENGINE IS BAD WITH A COST OF $4,900 TO FIX. IT APPEARS THAT THERE ARE NUMEROUS FORD EXPLORER VEHICLES FROM 2011 - 2019 WITH THE 3.5L ENGINE WITH THIS ISSUE. REQUEST INVESTIGATION AND RECALL BY FORD.
When turning on the rear Auxililary climate control the cabin of the vehicle had a large amount of exhaust smell enter the cabin.
Driving my explorer and the water pump went bad. Got overheat warnings and now I find this happens to all of these engines. A class action suit has been filed. The cost to repair is nearly $4000 for an issue does knew about it? Not recalling and fixing these is negligent and dangerous.
We purchased a 2014 Ford Explorer Police utility from the Raleigh Surplus in the summer of 2021. We also had another vehicle, so rarely drove this Explorer until last summer 2022 when we had to sell one vehicle, therefore putting us driving the Explorer only. I had a failed surgery and was no longer able to drive, so that was another reason the Explorer didn't get driven much the first year. Since last summer my husband has been very sick and in and out of doctors and pulmonary specialist. We have tried to figure out what happened all of a sudden. After talking with his pulmonary specialist and her doing numerous blood work, we came to the conclusion it must be the Ford Explorer causing him sickness. He has been put on nighttime oxygen and has lost a great deal of weight, and become very sick with shortness of breath and now with neurological issues. His recent blood work revealed carbon monoxide levels of 11.8 %. After a recent weekend admission to the hospital, the pulmonary doctor orders were to get rid of this Explorer. We need a vehicle to drive, because this is our only way of transportation. I called corporate and got a case number of CAS-41523358 and was told to call a Ford dealership and get the vehicle there asap. I called Alex at 919-366-8000 Leith Ford, the closest dealership and he said I need to get in touch with wford@ford.com . I did 2 weeks ago and he is ignoring me. I also get nausea and dizziness and headaches in the vehicle. My daughter drove it one night and became sick as well. Most of all my husband is still very sick from this vehicle. He almost fell asleep at the wheel! Luckily I was there to alert him! He Never ever falls asleep at the wheel!

My ford Explorer has a 3.5L V6 motor. This motor was designed with the water pump installed in the crank shaft. As a result of this when the water pump fails and leaks coolant can leak into the motor and mix with the oil costing thousands of dollars in damages.
My vehicle gradually started getting louder and at the same time we started to notice exhaust fume smell in the vehicle. I had taken it to the dealership and and a different mechanic for a confirmation. They both explained the exhaust is coming apart at the seam. Not due to rust. Just the exhaust on both sides are doing the same thing. Since the first visit with them, I had taken it back again when we noticed it even more and it just keeps getting worse. It'll eventually come off and continue to allow fumes in the car until replaced. I called Ford and they said they did have a customer satisfaction program to replace it, but it was only for police cars and it expired anyway. I explained this is a huge concern for the fact we inhale the fumes in the car and that it can just come apart at any moment, driving. No help at all from Ford.

Faulty water pump went out on roadtrip, hours away from home. It left me and my children stranded for 4 hours in 100° conditions. No engine light or indicators came on to warn there was a problem. The contact stated that the dealer completed the service and the recall repair however, upon picking up the vehicle and returning to his residence, the contact's father noticed that there was mechanical fluid leaking from the vehicle onto the ground. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that engine needed to be flushed and the timing chain and water pump needed to be replaced. The dealer also informed the contact that the vehicle was not drivable and he would be responsible for the cost of the repair. The contact's father declined to cover the repair as the failure was due to a technician error. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact's father then took the vehicle back to his residence. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and contacted the dealer who advised that they would not cover the repair of the vehicle. The manufacturer informed the contact that they could not force the dealer to repair the vehicle and referred the contact to NHTSA. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 56,556.

Went to start my 2014 Explorer on and it struggled 3 times before turning on. It showed a "Check Brake System" light in the dashboard for a quick second but other than that the car seemed to be ok. I turned on my information panel to check the temperature gauge and it was normal. Kept it on that while driving my kids to school to make sure if I had to pull over I could. I immediately brought it to Hemborg Ford in Norco, CA. When I first brought it in and they popped my hood my coolant tank was below the recommended line and the service advisor immediately said it's most likely my water pump. They had my SUV for over 24 hours for testing and sure enough it's the water pump. Ford decided to install the water pumps INSIDE the engine rather than outside. This is a very dangerous move as the coolant and oil can mix which can cause a vehicle to shut down unexpectedly. Thankfully I trusted my intuition and took it in when I noticed something off and didn't ruin my engine or overall car. I was quoted $2900 to fix this issue. $2500 in LABOR and $400 in PARTS. This is because the job can take up to 14 hours to complete start to finish due to the location of the pump. This is ridiculous. We need something done. Soooooo many people are paying thousands of money out of pocket for something that shouldn't even be a problem. It’s a dang shame you spend thousands of dollars for a Ford Explorer and because the people that built it were not very smart the people that own them are having to pay thousands of dollars to replace the water pump. And Ford will not recall this or help with the cost. No warning lights come on and then we are stuck with the cost. I will never own another Fire in my life time.

Vehicle brought to dealer on 12/13/2021 and issue confirmed. Dealer aware of similar complaints across this vehicle type; TSB is available, so Ford is aware, however not catagorized by Ford as a safety issue. Dealer "reset" HVAC system, installed plugs on tailgate and installed tape on rear body module. Dealer stated additional repairs may be necessary as these "fixes" don't always work. No warning lamps, messages or other notifications. Issue first began November 27, 2021.

My car is regularly in for oil changes at the dealership between 5-6K miles and there was no indication that there may be coolant in the oil when it was changed. No warning signs indicated on the console except for right before the engine went which was "Extremely Low Oil". Consumer stated climate control system in the rear of the cabinet turns on by itself. Additionally, in the morning or anytime when car is auto started consumer can smell a pungent order like sulfur in the heating system.

In failure while driving on highway and it was found that the issue was due to a faulty water pump
7/20/2020 and before, dashboard light came on with message "check charging system" then steering wheel locked up, turned off engine, waited 2-3 seconds, turned back on and its okay. Kept doing this once in a while, bought new battery, message kept coming on. 07/28/2021 message came on saying "something is draining the juice out of battery". This message came on after we bought a new battery. Told Ford company when getting oil change, they said my battery is charged okay. They don't know whats causing it.

THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON A GAVE A READING OF P0016, WHICH IS A CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR. TOOK MY EXPLORER TO FRED BEANS FORD IN MECHANICSBURG, PA. FOR INSPECTION. THEY TOLD ME THE CAM PHASERS ARE COMPUTER CONTROLLED CAMSHAFT GEARS. THE VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SYSTEM OPERATES WHEN THE ENGINE COMPUTER (PCM) SENDS OIL PRESSURE TO ONE OR THE OTHER CHAMBER OF THE PHASER VIS CAM TIMING SOLENOIDS. WHEN A CAM PHASER GOES BAD, THE VARIABLE CONTROL TIMING (VCT) SOLENOIDS WOULD BE DESTROYED, AND THE ENGINE CONTROL UNIT (ECU) WOULD NO LONGER BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE PHASERS, WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE ENGINES TIMING WOULD BE AFFECTED. THE CHECK ENGINE CODE WAS HARD STORED IN THE VEHICLE WHICH RESULTED IN A FAILED EMMISSION TEST. THE RECOMMENDED REPAIRS WILL NEED TO BE DONE IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THE STATE EMMISSION TEST. THE TOTAL FOR ALL REPAIRS PLUS INSPECTION COMES TO A TOTAL OF $3,995,05 BEFORE TAX. TO ME THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL BECAUSE MY EXPLORER IS RUNNING GREAT. THE VEHICLE HAS ON 80,000 MILES ON IT AND OIL HAS BEEN CHANGED EVERY 6-7 THOUSAND MILES. I UNDERSTAND THE F-150 HAS A SIMILAR PROBLEM AND QUALIFIES FOR A RECALL WITH THE SAME BASIC ENGINE. TO ME, THIS IS RIDICULOUS. NOBODY WOULD BUY A FORD KNOWING THEY HAD TO DUMP $4000 INTO AT 80,000 MILES. MY WIFE CONTINUES TO GET HEADACHES, DESPITE HAVING THE 'CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM' THAT FORD PROVIDES DONE TO ELIMINATE CARBON MONOXIDE ISSUE IN HER CAR. WE BOUGHT A CARBON MONOXIDE SENSOR THAT READS DOWN TO 1PPM AND SHE IS GETTING 50-60PPM OF CARBON MONOXIDE IN THE CAB WHILE DRIVING HER VEHICLE. THE SAME SENSOR WAS PLACED IN 4 OTHER CARS (2 FORDS, 1 SUBARU; 1 TOYOTA) AND ALL 4 OTHER CARS READ 0 PPM. FORD IS NOT ACKNOWLEDGING THERE IS A PROBLEM AT ALL. WE CALLED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE IT CORRECTED AND THE SERVICE ADVISOR SIMPLY SAYS 'I'VE NEVER HEARD OF CARBON MONOXIDE IN THE CAB.' THOUGHT LESS THAN A YEAR AGO THEY WERE THE SAME DEALERSHIP TO DO THE 'CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM' FOR THE EXACT SAME ISSUE.
WHILE DRIVING AT 25-30 MPH VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE HARD, THEN MADE A MISFIRING/POPPING SOUNDS, AND MOTOR SHUT DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THERE IS AN ODOR LEAKING INTO THE CAR FROM EITHER THE ENGINE OR THE EXHAUST . BROUGHT THE VEHICLE BACK ON AUGUST 21, 2018 WITH 13,800 MILES AND TOLD THEM WHEN WE TRIED TO ENTER A FREEWAY WHILE ACCELERATING INTO TRAFFIC WITH THE A/C ON THERE IS A VERY PROFOUND ODOR OF EXHAUST FUMES INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THEY STATED THERE WAS A TSB ISSUED FOR THIS VEHICLE BACK IN 2016 FOR THIS ISSUE. BUT UNFORTUNATELY EVEN THOUGH THE CAR ONLY HAS 13,800 MILES ON IT NOW, IT IS OVER THE 3 YEAR WARRANTY PERIOD AND THE EXTENDED WARRANTY WE PURCHASED FROM THEM FOR 50,000 OR FIVE YEARS WON'T COVER IT EITHER. DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE US 1,100 FOR THE REPAIRS. WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED EARLIER IF WE WERE TOLD BACK IN 2016 THERE WAS A TSB FOR THIS PROBLEM WHILE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. ONE YEAR PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE CONTACT'S HUSBAND WAS HOSPITALIZED BECAUSE HIS BLOOD HEMOGLOBIN LEVELS WERE HIGH DUE TO CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 60,000. DURING COMMUTES TO AND FROM WORK, TYPICALLY WITH STOP-AND-GO CONDITIONS AT SLOW SPEED, I BECOME VERY SLEEPY AND INATTENTIVE, ALMOST TO THE POINT OF PASSING OUT. THIS HAPPENED RECENTLY AFTER HAVING THE CAR SERVICED FOR OIL CHANGE AND A STANDARD 15-POINT INSPECTION.
STRONG EXHAUST ODOR CAN BE SMELLED IN THE CABIN SHORTLY AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE AND WHILE DRIVING. THIS ODOR CAUSES NAUSEA AND LIGHTHEADEDNESS WHILE IN THE VEHICLE. DRIVING WITH THE WINDOWS OPEN DOES HELP TO DISSIPATE THE SMALL BUT DOES NOT TAKE IT AWAY COMPLETELY.

THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE CONTACT CALLED 911. THE CHILD WAS TAKEN TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM WHERE THE DOCTOR RAN SEVERAL TESTS, BUT WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CHILD. THE CHILD RECOVERED AND WAS RELEASED FROM THE EMERGENCY ROOM. THE CHILD WAS TAKEN BACK INTO THE VEHICLE AND, FIVE MINUTES INTO THE DRIVE BACK TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CHILD BECAME RESPONSIVE WHEN THE CONTACT ROLLED DOWN THE WINDOW. THE CHILD WAS TAKEN TO THE PEDIATRICIAN WHO RULED OUT THAT THE CHILD MIGHT HAVE SUFFERED A SEIZURE. BOTH THE MOTHER AND THE PEDIATRICIAN SUSPECTED THAT THE CHILD MIGHT HAVE SUFFERED FROM CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING. THE DEALER WAS CALLED (FESLER AUTO MALL IN FAIRFIELD, IOWA, 641-472-2161), BUT DID NOT CALL BACK AS PROMISED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 82,000.

FORD EXPLORER EXHAUST-LEAK. MY 2014 FORD EXPLORER FIRST EXHIBITED A STRONG EXHAUST LEAK SMELLS IN THE CABIN ABOUT 18 MONTHS AGO WITH APPROXIMATELY 18-20,000 MILES. THE SMELL WAS MOST NOTICEABLE AFTER COMING TO A STOP WITH THE CAR AT FULL OPERATING TEMPERATURE. AROUND TOWN IT NEVER SEEMS TO BE PRESENT. I TOOK IT TO LOVELAND FORD AND THEY INSTALLED A "KIT" WHICH SEEMED TO STOP THE PROBLEM, HOWEVER IT HAS RECENTLY COME BACK STRONGER THAN EVER. YESTERDAY, I DROVE FROM DENVER UP INTO THE ROCKIES AND THE PROBLEM WAS PARTICULARLY BAD ON THE RETURN TRIP IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC TO THE POINT I WAS FEELING SICK BY THE TIME I GOT HOME. I HAVE HAD THIS BEFORE BUT THE CIRCUMSTANCES MADE THIS PARTICULARLY UNPLEASANT. I CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY FORD FOR EASTER EGG HUNTS, SO I AND MY FAMILY ARE WAITING FOR A RECALL. IN THE MEANWHILE, WE ARE DRIVING THE VEHICLE WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN. WE HAVE BEEN CONTACTED BY ONE LAW FIRM SO FAR THAT IS INVOLVED IN A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT OVER THIS ISSUE. WE WOULD RATHER HAVE FORD FIX THE PROBLEM. THERE IS AN EXHAUST SMELL OF ROTTEN EGGS, BURNT RUBBER, AND SULFUR THAT PROTRUDES FROM THE AIR VENTS INTO THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE UPON ACCELERATION AND A SMALLER AMOUNT OF EXHAUST PROTRUSION UPON IDLE. BOTH CITY AND HIGHWAY DRIVING ARE AFFECTED. THE EXHAUST SMELL HAS CAUSED SOME PASSENGER NAUSEA.
PURCHASED A 2014 FORD EXPLORER IN FEBRUARY 2014, AND WITHIN WEEKS OF OWNING THE VEHICLE I STARTED TO NOTICE A FOUL SMELL ENTERING THE CABIN IMMEDIATELY AFTER ACCELERATION. IF ACCELERATION OCCURS QUICKLY, WITH A HIGHER THEN NORMAL RPM OCCURRING, THE SMELL BECOMES WORSE. ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS, I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO MAC HAIK FORD IN HOUSTON FOR REPAIR. THE FIRST TWO VISITS WERE WERE NON-PRODUCTIVE, AS THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMED THEY COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE ISSUE. ON THE THIRD VISIT, I ASKED THAT THEY TECHNICIAN GO ON A TEST DRIVE WITH ME IN THE CAR. THIS VISIT FINALLY RESULTED IN AN ADMISSION FROM THE TECHNICIAN THAT HE COULD ALSO SMELL THE ODOR, AND THEY AGREED TO KEEP THE VEHICLE AND IDENTIFY THE SOURCE OF THE ISSUE. AFTER A FEW DAYS, I WAS TOLD THAT THE ISSUE HAD BEEN CORRECTED BY ADDING AN ADDITIONAL VENT LINE TOWARDS THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. WITHIN HOURS OF HAVING THE VEHICLE BACK, IT HAD BECOME OBVIOUS THAT A PERMANENT FIX WAS NOT INSTALLED, AND THE ODOR INSIDE THE CABIN HAS CONTINUED TO OCCUR REGULARLY OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS.
EXHAUST SMELL IN CABIN. WE EXPERIENCE A STRONG ODOR IN THE CABIN WHEN ACCELERATING, TYPICALLY WHILE GETTING ONTO A HIGHWAY OR PASSING. IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE IF THE WINDOWS ARE OPEN OR THE AC IS ON. WE DON'T DRIVE THIS VEHICLE VERY MUCH TO DATE WE HAVE 28000 MILES ON IT.
MY WIFE AND SON HAVE HAD FREQUENT HEADACHES AFTER DRIVING IN OUR VEHICLE FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE FOR WELL OVER TWO YEARS. WE INITIALLY THOUGHT THEY WERE GETTING MOTION SICKNESS BUT AFTER FINDING OUT THAT THERE ARE SIGNIFICANT ISSUES WITH EXPLORERS AND EXHAUST FUMES THE PROBLEM IS LIKELY A RESULT OF EXHAUST FUMES IN THE VEHICLE. WE HAVE CONTINUOUSLY HAD A ROTTEN EGG SMELL COMING FROM THE VENT WHICH I ASSUMED THE A/C FILTERS NEEDED CHANGED. THE SMELL IS INSTANT UPON RUNNING THE A/C AND CONTINUOUS WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. THE ODOR IS STRONGER AT THE BEGINNING BUT THIS COULD BE DUE TO ACCLIMATING TO THE SMELL WHILE DRIVING. I CHANGED ALL THE FILTERS IN THE VEHICLE AND SPRAYED THE VENT SYSTEM WITH AN ODOR TREATMENT BUT THE SMELL DIDN'T GO AWAY.

AN EXHAUST SMELL ENTERS THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. I FIRST STARTED TO NOTICE IT WHEN THE CAR WAS IDLING AND I THOUGHT IT WAS COMING FROM THE CAR AHEAD OF ME. THIS CONTINUED ON AND OFF FOR MONTHS UNTIL MORE RECENTLY WHEN THE SMELL WAS PRESENT EVEN AS I DROVE THE CAR. I HAVE HAD HEADACHES, DIZZINESS AND STOMACH UPSETS FOR MONTHS REALIZING THAT MY VEHICLE WAS PERHAPS NO LONGER SAFE FOR ME TO DRIVE. I BROUGHT IT IN TO MY DEALERSHIP AND THEY IMMEDIATELY ACKNOWLEDGED THE SMELL AND GAVE ME A LOANER. THEY HAVE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH FORD AND ARE CURRENTLY WAITING FOR THE REPAIR PARTS BUT THEY ARE ON BACKORDER. I WAS TOLD THAT POLICE DEPARTMENTS HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME THING. I JUST RECEIVED A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT NOTICE SO I IMAGINE THIS WILL EVENTUALLY BE A RECALL. IN THE MEANTIME I CANNOT DRIVE MY OWN VEHICLE WITHOUT RISKING MY HEALTH. THE CAUSE TO ME IS UNKNOWN, I HAVE READ THAT IT IS A DEFECT IN THE ENGINEERING OF THE EXHAUST SYSTEM.
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE, I NOTICED A VERY STRONG SMELL OF PROPANE OR NATURAL GAS. WHEN VEHICLE WAS STOPPED AND IDLING, THE SAME SMELL WAS DETECTED OUTSIDE THE CAR. THE NEXT DAY, THE VEHICLE SMELLED AGAIN WHILE DRIVING, ONLY THIS TIME IT SMELLED LIKE ROTTEN EGGS.

THE OVERWHELMING ENGINE EXHAUST FUMES WITHIN THE PASSENGER CABIN AT TIMES IS UNBEARABLE.
I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 2014 FORD EXPLORER AND THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. THE EXHAUST FUMES COMING INTO THE VEHICLE DURING ACCELERATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. I TOOK THE TRUCK IN TO WHILE IT WAS UNDER THE BUMPER TO BUMPER TO BE FIXED AND WHAT WAS DONE AT THE TIME WAS REPROGRAMMING EXHAUST AND AC INTAKE. THIS DID NOT FIX THE EXHAUST PROBLEM BUT DID IMPROVE THE SMELL AND HOW OFTEN IT OCCURRED . I RECENTLY TOOK MY TRUCK INTO GET THE EXHAUST FIXED AND THEY WILL NOT FIX IT BECAUSE IT IS PASSED THE BUMPER TO BUMPER BUT THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM TOOK IN TO BE FIX PRIOR.

STRONG "NATURAL GAS" SMELL INSIDE CAR WHILE DRIVING AND VERY NOTICEABLE OUTSIDE OF CAR UPON EXITING INTERIOR. CAN SMELL FROM INSIDE MY HOUSE WHEN PARKED IN GARAGE. STARTED 1/26/17 WITH 63,200 MILES ON MY SUV. TOOK TO FORD FOR SERVICE ON 1/30/17 AND WAS TOLD THERE WERE NO EMISSION PROBLEMS AND THAT IT WAS DUE TO MY PTU WHICH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH PTU VENT VALVE.

COMPLAINTS TO DEALER ARE GIVEN A CURSORY EXPLANATION OF EXCESS FUEL, IT IS NORMAL AND NOTHING CAN BE DONE. I'VE OWNED MANY VEHICLES OVER THE YEARS AND NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME THERE IS A HIGHER LEVEL OF ACCELERATION OR RPMS EXCEEDING 3200.
I HAVE FREQUENTLY EXPERIENCED A STRONG SMELL OF EXHAUST AND/OR BURNING OIL IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. THIS OFTEN OCCURS WHEN THE A/C IS RUNNING AND/OR UNDER HEAVY ACCELERATION OR CLIMBING STEEP GRADES. I HAD MENTIONED THIS A FEW TIMES TO 2 LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIPS AND WAS ADVISED BY ONE THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF POSSIBLE ISSUES INVOLVING A CHEMICAL OR "PROPANE" SMELL, BUT NOT EXHAUST FUMES. THE OTHER HAD NO KNOWLEDGE THAT THIS WAS A FREQUENT OCCURRENCE.

I MAY HAVE ALREADY COMPLAINED, BUT THIS CAN UPDATE THAT. WHEN PULLING A LONG GRADE AND THE VEHICLE HAS DOWNSHIFTED,3500 OR MORE RPM AND ABOUT 65 MPH UNDER LOAD, I SMELL SULFUR IN THE CABIN. IT SEEMS TO BE WORSE WHEN THE COVERS FOR MY MOON ROOF AND SUN ROOF ARE RETRACTED. IT HAS BEEN IN TO A DEALER 4 TIMES NOW, SO I HAVE LOST A MONTH OF USE. THE LAST RETURN WAS ON FRIDAY 1 JULY. I HAVE NOT HAD A CHANCE TO TAKE IT TO A LOCAL MOUNTAIN THAT MAKES IT SMELL. FORD KEEPS WORKING ON THE BACK END, THE EXHAUST THERE HAS ALMOST NO SMELL. I TOLD THE DEALER THE SULFUR SMELL COMES FORM EXHAUST THAT IS ESCAPING FROM THE ENGINE UP TO THE BACK OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS. EXPERIENCING VERY STRONG EXHAUST / SULFUR SMELL IN CABIN AREA UPON MEDIUM TO HARD ACCELERATION. BOUGHT CAR IN SPRING OF 2014 AND NOTICED IT WITHIN THE FIRST MONTH OR TWO. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN A CAR IN FRONT OF ME, BUT THAT IS NOT THE CASE AS I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS NUMEROUS TIMES THIS WITH NO ONE ELSE ON THE ROAD. I'VE BEEN PUTTING OFF GETTING THIS LOOKED AT SINCE IT SOUNDS LIKE THERE IS NO DEFINITIVE FIX, BUT SINCE THE CAR NOW HAS 29,000 MILES ON IT, I WANT IT TO GET CHECKED OUT BEFORE WARRANTY IS UP. IN EARLY MARCH AS WE BEGAN OUR TRIP AND I ACCELERATED ONTO THE INTERSTATE THERE WAS A VERY HEAVY EXHAUST ODOR. THE ODOR WAS THICK ENOUGH THAT WE HAD TO LOWER EACH OF OUR WINDOWS. I HAVE EXPERIENCED A BURNING SMELL ENTERING THE CABIN AREA WHEN ACCELERATING TO PASS A VEHICLE AND WHEN CLIMBING A HILL. ALSO HAVE HAD A "SOUR" SMELL LIKE SOURED CLOTHING FROM AC WHEN I START MY VEHICLE. I DID ASK A SERVICE MANAGER ABOUT THE "SOUR" SMELL AND HE SAID HE NEVER HEARD OF IT, NOT A BIG HELP. *TR
DURING HARD ACCELERATION, A "SMELL" ENTERS THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR. THE "SMELL" IS OF SULFUR OR ROTTEN EGGS. THE SMELL IS DEFINITELY COMING FROM THE EXHAUST. FORD ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM AND PERFORMED A TSB TO FIX. THE TSB DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM, AND THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THEY HAVE TO WAIT FOR AN ENGINEER. SERVICE MANAGER SAYS THERE IS ONLY 1 FORD ENGINEER FOR ALL OF SOUTH TEXAS. *TR

I GET A FOUL ODOR IN THE CABIN ON HARD ACCELERATION. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY DID A FIX BUT IT DID NOT HELP.THEY SAY THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, IT SMELLS LIKE EXHAUST IS ENTERING THE CABIN. WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY I NEEDED TO ACCELERATE TO PASS A VEHICLE AND WHEN I DID A EXHAUST SMELL ENTERED THE CAB IT TOOK ABOUT 5-10 SECONDS AFTER ACCELERATING OVER 3500 RPMS. I HAVE TESTED THIS AGAIN AND AGAIN AND IT HAPPENS EVERY TIME UNDER THESE CONDITIONS. SITTING STILL THERE IS NO EFFECT AT ALL. FIVE STAR FORD OF PLANO TEXAS HAS TRIED A "TSB" THAT WAS ISSUED TO INSTALL A VENT ADJUSTMENT. THEY ALSO CHANGED OUT THE CABIN FILTER. STILL NO LUCK. THANK YOU *TR

I RENTED A NEARLY NEW FORD EXPLORER LIMITED AWD IN MILWAUKEE, WI. I HAD BEEN CONSIDERING PURCHASING THIS MODEL SO I WAS PLEASED TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE ONE FOR A FEW DAYS. EVERY TIME I ACCELERATED HARD (WOT) THE CABIN WOULD FILL WITH EXHAUST FUMES. THIS OCCURRED EVEN WITH THE AC IN RECIRCULATE MODE AND WITHOUT ANY OTHER VEHICLES NEARBY THAT WOULD HAVE PRODUCED THE ODOR. IT WAS STRONG ENOUGH THAT WE OPENED THE WINDOWS TO GET FRESH AIR. AFTER THE 2ND TIME OF THIS OCCURRING, I DID NOT ACCELERATE HARD AGAIN AS TO AVOID THE PROBLEM. I ALSO TEST DROVE A BRAND NEW 2014 ECOBOOST AWD MODEL THIS WEEKEND AND IT DID THE SAME THING. I WILL NOT BE PURCHASING THIS MODEL BUT WANTED TO ADD MY EXPERIENCE TO THE DATABASE AS I FEEL THAT FORD NEEDS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM FOR OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES. TEST DROVE BRAND NEW 2014 EXPLORER WITH 3.5L ECOBOOST TURBO ENGINE. UPON HARD ACCELERATION, THE VEHICLE CABIN EXPERIENCES A STRONG EXHAUST SMELL THAT IS IRRITATING TO THE EYES AND LUNGS. I DECIDED AGAINST PURCHASING THE VEHICLE FOR THIS REASON. *TR
WHEN ACCELERATING OR DOING FREEWAY SPEEDS THE SMELL OF EXHAUST CIRCULATES THROUGHOUT THE CAR. IT IS SO BAD THAT WE HAVE TO ROLL DOWN ALL THE WINDOWS. AFTER PURCHASING A NEW 2014 FORD EXPLORER LIMITED. 3.5L 4WD LESS THAN 2 HOURS PRIOR, MY WIFE AND 2 CHILDREN WERE DRIVING HOME DOWN THE FREEWAY. AFTER A HARD ACCELERATION AN AWFUL SMELL FILLED THE CABIN. MY WIFE STARTED COUGHING AND I INSTANTLY FELT NAUSEOUS. I PULLED OVER THINKING SOMETHING WAS BURNING, MY WIFE THOUGHT IT WAS BURNING WIRES. I CHECKED OF THE VEHICLE BUT FOUND NOTHING BURNING. I DID HOWEVER WALK TO THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND WAS OVERPOWERED BY THE SAME SMELL. I NARROWED IN DOWN TO THE EXHAUST PIPE. AFTER GETTING HOME I DID A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH AND WAS SHOCKED TO FIND MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM AND THERE IS EVEN A LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST FORD OVER IT. THE DEALER MUST HAVE KNOWN ABOUT IT... I WANT TO RETURN THIS VEHICLE , FORD HAS TO HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THIS OR SHOULD HAVE. THEY PUT MY CHILDREN AT RISK AND I AM NOT HAPPY. EXHAUST FUMES ARE ENTERING THE VEHICLE WHEN THE CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM IS OPERATING. THESE FUMES ARE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE ITSELF AND NOT FROM OUTSIDE SOURCES. THE FUMES ARE WORSE WHEN THE RECIRCULATE OPTION IS OPERATING. HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND/OR MEDIUM ACCELERATION PRODUCE THE STRONGEST FUMES. HEADACHES AND NAUSEA INFLICTED ON VEHICLE OCCUPANTS. VEHICLE WAS SERVICED BY FORD, PRESENTED AS REPAIRED AND STATED TO HAVE PASSED A TEST FOR EXHAUST FUMES. VEHICLE STILL PRESENTS EXHAUST FUMES INSIDE THE VEHICLE. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE, IT BECAME APPARENT THAT FORD AND THE NHTSA HAVE KNOWN OF THIS PROBLEM: CARBON MONOXIDE EXPOSURE AND HEALTH ISSUES SHOULD NOT BE REGULATED TO SECONDARY STATUS BY FORD NOR THE NHTSA. *TR

THE EXHAUST FUMES WERE THE STRONGEST AT 60 MPH OR HIGHER. THE CONTACT HAD TO REDUCE THE VEHICLE'S SPEED AND OPEN ALL OF THE WINDOWS IN ORDER TO RELEASE THE FUMES. THE FAILURE OCCURRED CONSTANTLY. EXHAUST FUMES ENTER THE CABIN THROUGH THE A/C VENTS INTERMITTENTLY. THE A/C CONTROLS MUST BE TURNED ON AND THE VEHICLE MUST BE ACCELERATING OR CLIMBING A HILL. IT LOADS THE CABIN HEAVILY AT TIMES WITH EXHAUST FUMES, BUT APPEARS TO CLEAR QUICKLY WHEN NORMAL OPERATION RESUMES. *TR

WHEN DRIVING MY 2014 FORD EXPLORER AT ANY SPEED AND ON ANY TERRAIN, THE EXHAUST FUMES ENTER INTO THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. THE ODOR IS EXTREME, CAUSES HEADACHES, NAUSEA, AND TENDS TO BURN MY EYES AS WELL AS MY GRANDDAUGHTER, WHO IS WITH ME MOST OF THE TIME. BECAUSE THERE HAVE NOT BEEN ENOUGH PEOPLE COMPLAIN OF THIS PROBLEM, AND BECAUSE FORD HAS NOT RECOGNIZED THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM, MY DEALER WAS NOT GOING TO ATTEMPT TO FIX THE PROBLEM. FINALLY THEY HAVE AGREED TO SPRAY THE UNDER PART OF THE EXHAUST WITH A RUBBERIZED SEALANT THAT WAS USED ON THE 2013 MODELS FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. IF THIS DOES NOT WORK, WHICH I HAVE READ WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL ON THE 2013 , I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. THE EXHAUST ORDER IS HORRID AND I FEAR THE HEALTH IMPLICATIONS THAT MAY ARISE. *JS

UPON CONSISTENT MODERATE TO HEAVY THROTTLE, THE CABIN FILLS WITH FUMES/ODOR WHICH SMELLS LIKE A MIX OF EXHAUST AND BURNING/SMOLDERING PLASTIC OR EPOXY. IT IS STRONG, EASILY REPEATABLE AND HAPPENS ALL THE TIME WHILE TRAVELING UP LONG CONSISTENT GRADES ETC. DOES NOT HAPPEN IN EASY CITY DRIVING, MERGING ONTO AN EXPRESS WAY, IT HAPPENS NEARLY 100% OF THE TIME. *TR
WAS ACCELERATING ON THE INTERSTATE AND A VERY FOUL ODOR, LIKE EXHAUST ENTERED THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON MANY OCCASIONS, WITH THE WINDOWS UP AND DOWN, AC OFF AND ON, HEAT OFF AND ON, GOING 10MPH AND GOING 60MPH, DURING HARD ACCELERATION AND DURING MODERATE ACCELERATION. *TR
IT WAS RAINING QUITE HEAVILY ALL DAY AND WAS RAINING WHEN THE MISFIRE OCCURRED. THE VEHICLE WOULD BUCK AND JERK WHEN I TRIED TO ACCELERATE. I HAD TO PULL OVER AND RESTART THE CAR AND THEN FINALLY THE BLINKING ENGINE WENT AWAY. THE ENGINE ON THIS CAR IS A TWIN TURBO 3.5L ECOBOOST. *JS
THE EXPLORER SPORT (V6 TWIN TURBO ECOBOOST) STARTED LEAKING SULFUROUS SMELLING VEHICLE EXHAUST FUMES (POSSIBLY CYANOTIC ) INTO THE CAR WHICH MADE THE OCCUPANTS FEEL UNWELL . FORD HAVE A FIX THAT THEY DO NOT ADVISE CUSTOMERS ABOUT SO THE FUME ISSUE IS KNOWN TO THEM ( TSB 12-12-4 ). THIS FIX HAS BEEN PERFORMED YET THE ODOR PERSISTS IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES. WE HAVE LITTLE CONFIDENCE THAT THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN PROPERLY RESOLVED AND WE HAVE LITTLE CONFIDENCE IN DRIVING A CAR WITH THIS TYPE OF FAULT. IT IS DISTURBING THAT OXIDES OF SULFUR AND HYDROGEN SULFIDE CAN ONLY BE SMELLED WITHIN CERTAIN CONCENTRATION LIMITS AND THAT THE "NOSE" BECOMES INSENSITIVE TO THEM AT HIGHER CONCENTRATIONS. OTHER PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING THE SAME PROBLEM AND I THINK IT S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE A DRIVER BECOMES INCAPACITATED AND HAS A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. IF THIS HAS NOT ALREADY HAPPENED.
