Your transmission may suddenly lose power while driving, causing your vehicle to slow down or stop moving forward without warning. This has happened repeatedly—even after replacing the transmission. You should have the transmission system inspected and repaired by a qualified mechanic before driving the vehicle again.

NHTSA #: 11414743
criticalPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Sep 2019

Your transmission has failed multiple times within a short period. You experience jerking when shifting into gear that feels like a rear-end collision. Despite multiple repairs including a full rebuild and solenoid pack replacement, the transmission continues to malfunction, suggesting a deeper manufacturing defect rather than an isolated failure.

NHTSA #: 11256530

Filed: Jul 2023

Your transmission's reverse band has broken, leaving you without reverse gear. This appears to be a known problem with this transmission model. The failure happened suddenly without any warning signs, and you may need transmission repair or replacement to restore reverse functionality.

NHTSA #: 11534558

Filed: Oct 2020

When you accelerated from a turning lane into a parking lot, your transmission slipped and temporarily wouldn't engage, leaving your vehicle unable to move. After a few moments, it finally kicked in and you were able to complete the turn. This appears to be a known issue affecting Ford Explorers from 2002-2006. A transmission fluid flush and filter replacement, or potentially a transmission rebuild or replacement, may be needed to resolve the slipping.

When you shift into reverse and apply the gas, your transmission shifts very hard and jerks, with the wheels slipping. This happened when you were leaving a parking lot. The transmission may need servicing or repair to address the shifting problem.

Filed: Sep 2018

Your transmission slips when shifting into or staying in second or third gear, meaning the engine revs but the car doesn't accelerate smoothly. This problem started within the first month of ownership and has gotten worse over time, even though you haven't towed anything or carried heavy loads. The transmission may need internal repair or replacement to fix the slipping.

While driving to an intersection, a wrench warning light appeared on your dashboard and your car suddenly lost power—you couldn't accelerate. After pulling into a parking lot and restarting the vehicle, you experienced severe jerking and jolting that felt like being rear-ended, with your head jerking forward as you drove. This suggests an engine misfire or transmission issue that needs diagnostic scanning to identify the root cause.

Your engine seized while you were driving, forcing you to pull over. After letting the vehicle sit for a while, you were able to restart it, but the engine seized again after driving only 100 yards. This happened at around 150,000 miles on your 2006 Ford Explorer. The engine may need professional inspection to determine why it's seizing, which could involve checking the oil level, oil condition, and internal engine components.

Your vehicle's engine wiring harness has deteriorated due to heat exposure, leaving bare wires that can cause electrical shorts. This problem has been reported by multiple owners and can lead to serious issues like your engine shutting off while driving, electrical fires, failure to start, or damage to your engine control computer. The issue appears to affect 2006-2010 Ford Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers with the 4.0L engine. A complete replacement of the engine wiring harness will likely be needed to fully resolve the problem.

Your check engine light keeps coming on with emissions-related codes even after you've replaced multiple parts including O2 sensors, spark plugs, wires, EGR valve, mass airflow sensor, and EGR solenoid valve. Your car is failing emissions inspection and won't pass registration, and mechanics are unable to resolve the issue. The problem may require engine computer diagnostics or replacement, as the computer appears to be detecting issues but the underlying cause remains unclear.

Filed: Feb 2021

Your engine has stalled and shut off three times over the past year while driving at normal speeds, most recently when you stopped at a traffic light. The engine restarts normally after a few minutes with no apparent problem. Even though your battery and alternator are relatively new and a dealer inspection found no engine issues, this stalling could be dangerous if it happens on a highway.

Your rear wiper has been frozen and non-functional for a long time. Your cooling system has had persistent issues — you've replaced the radiator, thermostat multiple times, and recently had a major coolant leak from the bottom thermostat housing that caused severe overheating. A software update costing around $110 has been suggested to address overheating issues.
