FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 Ford Edge vehicles manufactured September 11, 2008, to July 1, 2010, and Lincoln MKX vehicles manufactured September 23, 2008, to July 1, 2010, originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Due to corrosion from salt water exposure such as from road salt use, the affected vehicles may leak fuel from the fuel tank seam weld under the tank mounting reinforcement brackets.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and either clean and treat the fuel tank with a corrosion preventative or replace the tank, free of charge. The recall began on May 10, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S31.

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Edge. The contact stated that whenever the vehicle was started, there was an abnormally strong gasoline odor inside of the vehicle. The contact stated that whether the vehicle was being driven, idle or parked, the odor was present. The contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact stated the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V712000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 145,000.
The contact’s granddaughter owns a 2010 Ford Edge. The contact stated that upon exiting the vehicle, his granddaughter noticed a strong gasoline odor. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and diagnosed that the bracket had rusted and had caused the gas tank to rust and leak. The independent mechanic also advised the contact that the bracket and gas tank needed to be replaced and that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V712000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and advised the contact that they could not assist since the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer referred the contact to NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000. Consumer stated check engine light comes on when the vehicle gets to 1/2 tank of fuel. Original recall issue was prior to 07/2010. Consumer offered to pay for the repair but Ford could not guarantee to repay the consumer.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD EDGE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HER VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY, SHE NOTICED FUEL LEAKING ON TO THE GROUND OF HER DRIVEWAY. THE CONTACT ALSO NOTICED AN UNUSUAL ODOR INSIDE THE VEHICLE. NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V712000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE) AS A POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO THE FAILURE. HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 178,000.
THE INTERIOR OF MY CAR FILLED WITH GAS FUMES AFTER FILLING THE TANK ON11/4/2019. I CALLED DON HINDS FORD THE NEXT MORNING AND DROPPED IT OFF THAT EVENING. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT INSPECTED IT AND FOUND THAT THE GAS TANK WAS LEAKING. THE GAS TANK HAD BEEN REPLACED DUE TO A RECALL JUST 15 MONTHS AGO. FORD REFUSES TO REPLACE, STATING HAT THE WARRANTY IS EXPIRED. WE HAVE ASKED OUR DEALERSHIP TO COMPLETE THE REPAIRS. MY CONCERN IS THAT FORD MOTOR COMPANY REPLACED DEFECTIVE GAS TANKS WITH DEFECTIVE GAS TANKS. FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE SUGGESTED THAT I TAKE IT TO AN "AUTHORIZED FORD SERVICE PROVIDER" EVEN AFTER I TOLD THEM THAT IT WAS ALREADY AT A AUTHORIZED FORD SEVICE PROVIDER...EVEN THOUGH MY CAR IS LEAKING GAS AND COULD CATCH FIRE, EVEN THOUGH I TOLD THEM THAT MY CAR'S INTERIOR WAS FILLED WITH GAS FUMES.
WHILE DRIVE ABOUT 50 MILES PER HOUR ON THE STREET THE WRENCH LIGHT WENT ON THEN OFF. I PULLED UP TO A STOP LIGHT AND WHEN I TRIED TO ACCELERATE THE CAR COULD HARDLY MOVE. I WAS ONLY ABLE TO LIMP ALONG UNTIL I GOT TO MY DESTINATION. I SHUT THE CAR OFF AND WHEN I CAME BACK AFTER ABOUT 2 HOURS IT STARTED AND HAS BEEN DRIVING FINE THE LAST TWO DAYS, FOR NOW. NO WRENCH LIGHT NO POWER PROBLEMS. I'VE BEEN RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE ONLINE AND HAVE SEEN NUMEROUS OTHER COMPLAINTS WITH THE SAME DESCRIPTION AS MINE. A THROTTLE BODY SEEMS TO BE AT FAULT. APPARENTLY FORD KNOWS OF THIS ISSUE AND DID NOT DO A RECALL. RATHER THEY DID AN EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT ENDED IN 2015.

WHEN THE HEAT WAS TURNED ON, A STRONG FUEL ODOR WAS DETECTED INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS LEAKING FUEL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 166,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD EDGE. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V712000 (FUEL SYSTEM) IN JANUARY OF 2018. THE DEALER (PEARSON FORD, 10650 N MICHIGAN RD, ZIONSVILLE, IN 46077) STATED THAT THE PARTS WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALSO CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THE CONTACTED NEEDED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE RECALL REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS CORROSION ON THE VEHICLE, WHICH CAUSED THE FUEL PUMP TO MALFUNCTION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.
FUEL TANK AND OR LINE IS LEAKING BUT NOT ON RECALL LIST.
JUST BOUGHT USED FORD EDGE AND FOUND OUT THERE IS A RECALL ON IT AND FORD DEALER SAYS I HAVE TO PAY FOR IT BECAUSE PREVIOUS OWNER DIDN'T GET IT FIXED
THE CAR WOULDN'T START. SEEMED TO BE A FUEL ISSUE. HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE SERVICE PEOPLE TELL US THAT THE FUEL PUMP HAS APPARENTLY BEEN FAILING INTERMITTENTLY AND OVERHEATED - MELTING THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR. THE FUEL PUMP AND ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR AND LABOR WILL COST $1,078. IT SEEMS TO US THAT THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION AND, FROM WHAT WE HEAR FROM MECHANICS, IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE FORD EDGE. HOWEVER, ONLY THE 2014 MODEL YEAR HAS BEEN RECALLED FOR FUEL PUMP ISSUES...
I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL IN DECEMBER 2015. IT STATED THAT IF MY CAR WAS NOT EXHIBITING SYMPTOMS, FORD WOULD NOTIFY ME BY MAIL WHEN SERVICE PARTS WOULD BE AVAILABLE (SEE PHOTOS). IT IS NOW JUNE 1, 2016. I DECIDED TO CALL MY LOCAL FORD DEALER TO SEE IF I PARTS WERE READY--I NOW HAVE AN APPOINTMENT ON SATURDAY, JUNE 4 AT 8AM. MY CONCERN IS THAT FORD NEVER CONTACTED ME TO LET ME KNOW PARTS ARE AVAILABLE.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS VEHICLE WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED IN THE US AND THEN PURCHASED SECOND HAND BY MYSELF IN LATE 2010 AND REGISTERED IN ONTARIO CANADA SINCE. ON ABOUT THE ENTERED DATE I IDENTIFIED STRONG GASOLINE SMELL AND SOME LEAKAGE BELOW THE GAS TANK. I INVESTIGATED FORD RECALL INFO AND FOUND THAT THE CAR WAS SUBJECT TO A RECALL FOR LEAKING GAS TANKS (FORD # 15S31), (NHTSA ITEM LISTING DATE 2015-10-27). AFTER CALLING LOCAL DEALERS IN BOTH CANADA AND US, I WAS INFORMED BY BOTH THAT MY PARTICULAR VIN DID NOT APPEAR ON THE RECALL LIST. I CALLED BOTH CANADIAN AND US FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND AGAIN THEY ONLY CONFIRMED THAT MY VINE DID NOT APPEAR ON THE LIST. THE RECALL CRITERIA STATES THAT EDGES BUILT BEFORE JULY 2010 ARE PART OF THE RECALL. MY BUILD DATE IS LATE 2009 AND FITS THE CRITERIA. ALSO AMONG THE US STATES AND CANADIAN PROVINCES THAT FIT THE CRITERIA, ONTARIO IS ONE OF THE RECALLED PROVINCES. THIS ALSO QUALIFIES MY VEHICLE. NO ONE HAS GIVEN ME AN ANSWER WHY MY CAR DOES NOT QUALIFY. PRESENTLY, THE CAR IS A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD, WHICH I CANNOT DRIVE AND WHICH IS ENDANGERING MY PROPERTY AND FAMILY AND THAT OF MY NEIGHBORS. THE REPAIR IS EXPENSIVE AND I AM RELUCTANT TO PROCEED WITH IT ON THE SIMPLE HOPE THAT FORD WILL REIMBURSE ME. AT ABOUT 116,000 MILES ON MY 2010 FORD EDGE SE AWD, I STARTED NOTICING THE SMELL OF GAS. WHEN I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN TO GET CHECKED OUT I LEARNED THAT MY GAS TANK WAS LEAKING. THIS IS A 2010! AND WHAT MAKES ME EVEN MORE FURIOUS IS THAT THE 2007-2008 FORD EDGES HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT NOT MINE. ESTIMATED COST OF REPAIRS ARE $3,000.
I HAVE A 2010 FORD EDGE. WHEN PARKED IN MY GARAGE, I WOULD NOTICE THE ODOR OF GASOLINE. LATER, I NOTICED FUEL STAINS ON MY SLIGHTLY SLANTED DRIVEWAY UNDER WHERE THE EDGE WAS OFTEN PARKED. THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP INSPECTED MY TANK AND FOUND THAT IT WAS SEVERELY CORRODED IN SEVERAL LOCATIONS, INCLUDING THE SEAMS OF THE TANK. SEVERAL CALLS TO VARIOUS NUMBERS FOR FORD CUSTOMER RELATIONS ONLY RESULT IN MANY MINUTES ON HOLD, TO BE TOLD THE SAME THING - WHICH IS THAT THE 2010 IS NOT SUBJECT TO THE 14S22 RECALL FOR 2007 AND 2008 MODELS. THE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME TO KEEP MY RECEIPTS WHEN I HAVE THE REPAIRS DONE AND FORD MAY REIMBURSE ME IF THE RECALL IS EXPANDED. THE ESTIMATE FOR THE REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT OF THE CORRODED TANK IS $5000. ON TOP OF THAT, THERE ARE NO TANKS AVAILABLE. THIS GAS TANK PROBLEM IS AN ACKNOWLEDGED SAFETY ISSUE. APPARENTLY, FORD WOULD RATHER I DRIVE A VEHICLE THAT THEIR DEALERSHIP AFFIRMS IS UNSAFE, THAN ENROLL ME IN THE PROGRAMS AVAILABLE TO 2007/08 MODEL YEAR OWNERS WHO COME UNDER THE #14S22 RECALL. HOPEFULLY, THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS ON THIS ISSUE HAS REACHED A CRITICAL MASS TO BE DEFINED AS "A TREND." I PRAY THAT THERE ARE NO FIRES, INJURIES OR WORSE BECAUSE OF THIS SAFETY ISSUE.

CONSUMER STATED THEY ARE HAVING MULTIPLE PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR. *LN THE CONSUMER STATED WITHIN THE LAST MONTH, THE TORQUE CONVERTER, THROTTLE BODY AND MOTOR ASSEMBLY HAD TO BE REPLACED. ALSO, THERE WAS A SMELL OF GAS COMING FROM THE VEHICLE AND THE ENGINE HESITATED AT TIMES. *JB
VEHICLE STALLED GOING 60 MPH ON BUSY FREEWAY. TURNED FLASHERS ON IMMEDIATELY AND FORTUNATELY TRAFFIC REALIZED VEHICLE WAS HAVING DIFFICULTIES AND ALLOWED ME TO MOVE OVER TO SHOULDER. CAR RESTARTED AND EXITED TO ALTERNATE ROUTE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. STALLED REPEATEDLY AT VARIOUS SPEEDS AFTER THAT. CURRENTLY WAITING ON TROTTLE BODY TO BE SHIPPED TO MECHANIC FOR REPAIR. AM AWARE THAT FEDERAL SAFETY INVESTIGATORS ARE LOOKING AT SAME PROBLEM WITH FUSION, MILAN, ESCAPE AND MARINER. PLEASE CONSIDER DOING THE SAME FOR FORD EDGE. THIS VEHICLE IS ONLY 2 1/2 YEARS OLD. HIGH PITCH NOISE COMING FROM INTERIOR OF VEHICLE. HIGHLY AUDIBLE OUTSIDE OF VEHICLE. MOST PROMINENT AROUND THE REAR DRIVER SIDE WHEEL WELL. SOURCE SEEMS TO BE FROM FUEL PUMP. THE DEALERSHIP IN BENTONVILLE, ARKANSAS HAS REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP TWICE TO NO AVAIL. HAVE CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER RELATIONS WITHOUT MUCH SUCCESS. THERE SEEMS TO BE SOME TYPE OF SYSTEMIC DENIAL THAT THE PROBLEM EXISTS. COMMENTS RECEIVED WERE "IT'S NORMAL FOR THE VEHICLE OR IT'S A CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VEHICLE." IF TRUE THEN WE NO LONGER TO ISSUE RECALLS ON VEHICLE. WE CAN SIMPLY SAY THE ABOVE. PLEASE GOOGLE "FUEL PUMP IN FORD EDGE OR HIGH PITCH NOISE IN FORD EDGE". THERE SEEMS TO BE A LOT A CHATTER GOING BACK A NUMBER OF YEARS. THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. SUSTAINED INTERIOR EXPOSURE TO THIS NOISE RINGING IN MY EARS AND HEAD HAS CAUSED MILD HEADACHES. THIS IS QUITE DANGEROUS TO MYSELF AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC AS IT COULD LEAD TO DISTRACTED DRIVING. PLEASE INVESTIGATE AND ENCOURAGE FORD TO RESOLVE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. *TR
