ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

THE IGNITION SWITCH SEIZED AND PREVENTED THE KEY FROM BEING INSERTED INTO THE IGNITION TO START THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE OF $300, INCLUDING PARTS AND LABOR, AND AN ADDITIONAL $12 FOR A NEW SET OF KEYS FOR THE REPLACEMENT IGNITION SWITCH. ON 9/29/2014, NHTSA RECALL #:14V400 GM, RECALL #:N140350 COMPLETED BUT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. IT DID NOTHING THAT I CAN TELL. " 2014-04-10 GM IS AWARE OF SEVERAL HUNDRED COMPLAINTS OF KEYS COMING OUT OF IGNITIONS. SECOND REPAIR ADDED TO VEHICLES RECALLED EARLIER DETROIT ?? GENERAL MOTORS INFORMED THE NHTSA TODAY THAT IT IS ADDING IGNITION LOCK CYLINDERS TO ITS SAFETY RECALL OF 2.2 MILLION OLDER MODEL CARS IN THE UNITED STATES. UPON ATTEMPTING TO START THE CAR, NOTHING HAPPENS WHEN TURNING THE KEY. EVENTUALLY THE CAR WILL START AFTER A LONG DELAY. THIS OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY OVER TIME, ALWAYS REQUIRING A LONG WAIT (AND NOTHING ELSE) BEFORE THE CAR WOULD START - RESULTING ME BEING LATE FOR WORK OR MISSING IMPORTANT MEETINGS. ON READING EXTENSIVE REPORTS OF THE VERY PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET (ON MANY GM YEARS/MODELS), I LEARNED THAT IT IS A "SAFETY" FEATURE TO PREVENT THE CAR FROM BEING STOLEN A NECESSARY COMPUTER READING OF A CHIP IN THE KEY! FURTHER READING INDICATED THAT (1) THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM (2) GM CHARGES OVER $1000 TO "FIX" THE PROBLEM (VERIFIED BY MY GM DEALER), AND (3) THE "FIX" DOESN'T WORK (THE PROBLEM CONTINUES)! EVENTUALLY THE PROBLEM DISAPPEARED, BUT HAS JUST RECENTLY REAPPEARED WITH A VENGEANCE! I HAVE JUST LEARNED THAT A COMPANY MAKES A WIRING HARNESS PASSCODE BYPASS (AT $250) THAT WILL STOP THIS SITUATION OF THE CAR NOT STARTING WHEN THE KEY IS PROPERLY ENGAGED. I CAN THINK OF FEW DESIGN FLAWS THAT ARE POTENTIALLY MORE DANGEROUS (NOT TO MENTION INCONVENIENT) THAN HAVING YOUR CAR RANDOMLY REFUSING TO START - FOR INSTANCE LATE AT NIGHT IN A PARKING LOT OR GARAGE WHEN STORES ARE CLOSING OR CLOSED - OR WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ESCAPE FROM A DANGEROUS SITUATION. THIS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CIRCUMSTANCE FAR EXCEEDS ANY BENEFIT FROM PROTECTING YOUR CAR FROM BEING STOLEN BY USING A FAULTY PASSCODE SYSTEM. IF IT KEEPS HAPPENING WHEN DRIVING, IT WILL CAUSE A SERIOUS, IF NOT FATAL, ACCIDENT. THIS THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM FAILS 2-3 TIMES PER WEEK. THE ONLY SOLUTION IS TO REPLACE THE LOCK CYLINDER, WHICH IS ABOUT $500 AND ONLY AVAILABLE THROUGH THE DEALER. THIS SOLUTION DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK THOUGH. AFTER DOING THIS I HAD NO MORE PROBLEMS. FOR NO APPARENT REASON WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED THERE WAS A FIRE IN THE DASH AREA. HUSBAND WAS ABLE TO PUT OUT MOST OF THE FIRE UNTIL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED. FIRE DEPARTMENT STATED THAT THE FIRE APPEARED TO BE ELECTRICAL. OWNER NOT SURE WHAT WILL BE DONE WITH THE VEHICLE. *AK

IMPALA CONTROL COMPUTER - UPON TRACTION CONTROL ACTIVATION (WHEEL SLIP), CONTROL COMPUTER ACTIVATES SECURITY SYSTEM WHICH KILLS ENGINE AND PREVENTS IT FROM BEING RESTARTED. MYSELF AND MY THREE CHILDREN WERE ALMOST KILLED BY A PASSING TRUCK WHEN WE HAD TO LEAVE VEHICLE TO SEEK ASSISTANCE. DEALER REPLACED COMPUTER, HOWEVER, FIRMWARE RELEASE IS LIKELY PROBLEM.
