EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS MAY EXPERIENCE THE PERMANENT LOSS OF BRAKE LAMP FUNCTION OR BRAKE LAMPS THAT ARE ILLUMINATED AT ALL TIMES. THE CENTER HIGH-MOUNTED STOP LAMP (CHMSL) IS AFFECTED IN BOTH INSTANCES. ALSO, IF EQUIPPED, THE CRUISE CONTROL WILL BECOME INOPERATIVE. ANY TRAILER BRAKE LAMPS WHICH ARE CONNECTED TO THE VEHICLE'S BRAKE LAMP WIRING WILL MIMIC THE VEHICLE'S BRAKE LAMPS WHEN EITHER CONDITION OCCURS.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH ASSEMBLY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 5, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; GMC AT 1-866-996-9463 OR ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727.

GM IS RECALLING 185,903 MODEL YEAR 2004-2009 COLORADO, GMC MODEL YEAR 2009-2004 CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006 I-280, I-350, MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 I-290, AND I-370, PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ALABAMA, ARIZONA, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, HAWAII, LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI, NEVADA, NEW MEXICO, PUERTO RICO, SOUTH CAROLINA, TEXAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND UTAH. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A BRAKE LAMP SWITCH THAT MAY NOT WORK AS DESIGNED DUE TO CONTAMINATION IN THE SWITCH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE NECESSARY COMPONENTS AS SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL BULLETIN FREE OF CHARGE. GM ANTICIPATES THAT PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE BY JUNE 2010. A SPECIAL COVERAGE FOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN ALL OTHER STATES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE SAME TIME FRAME. IN THE INTERIM, OWNERS WHO EXPERIENCE THE FAILURE CAN OBTAIN A FREE REPAIR, HOWEVER THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO RETURN WHEN THE NEW DESIGN PART BECOMES AVAILABLE. WIRES IN THE HARNESS WHICH PASS FROM CAB TO LEFT REAR DOOR BREAK. THE BREAK DISABLES THE SEAT BELT LOCK UP MECHANISM. A BROKEN WIRE CAUSES THE AIR BAG READINESS LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE. THE DOOR OPEN AND CLOSE SWITCH IS INOPERABLE. THE LEFT REAR STEREO SPEAKER DOES NOT WORK.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET COLORADO. WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE BRAKE LIGHTS WOULD NOT ILLUMINATE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 76,000.
MY CRUISE CONTROL AND MY REAR DRIVER'S SIDE TOP TAIL LIGHT WENT OUT A WEEK OR SO AGO. TODAY, MY STOP LIGHTS STOPPED WORKING COMPLETELY, INCLUDING THE 3RD BRAKE LIGHT. I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED AND ANOTHER DRIVER INFORMED ME THAT MY BRAKE LIGHTS DIDN'T WORK. AFTER RESEARCHING THE ISSUE, I DISCOVERED THAT THE PROBLEMS I'M EXPERIENCING ARE RELATED TO 2 SWITCHES ABOVE MY BRAKE PEDAL-THE STOP LAMP SWITCH AND THE BRAKE CRUISE RELEASE SWITCH.I CALLED THE CHEVY RECALL HOTLINE AND PROVIDED MY VIN #. THE GIRL LACY INFORMED ME THERE WASN'T A RECALL FOR MY VEHICLE AND THAT THEY WOULD DO NOTHING TO HELP ME GET THE PROBLEM RESOLVED. I'VE SEEN NUMEROUS REPORTS ONLINE OF OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUE BEING DENIED AS WELL. THE REFERENCE # TO MY CALL IS [XXX]. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE AN EXTREME SAFETY HAZARD AND WOULD LIKE CHEVY TO COVER THE COST OF THE REPAIR AND ANY ACCIDENTS I MAY GET INTO AS A RESULT OF THIS PROBLEM.THANK YOU. THE CONTACT STATED THAT FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE REMEDY WAS PERFORMED, THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED UPON STARTING THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY STATED THAT THE RECALL EXPIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 143,000.

THE DEALER REPLACED THE SWITCH UNDER THE RECALL BUT EVERY 20,000 MILES, THE SWITCH WOULD FAIL AGAIN. THE AC RESISTOR WIRES WERE MELTED, CAUSING THE AIR CONDITIONER TO ONLY OPERATE ON LOW. THE DEALER REPLACED THE WIRING HARNESS AND THE RESISTOR BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 130,000.

THE DEALER CONFIRMED THAT HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. HE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO RELATED RECALL. THE BRAKE SWITCH WAS REPAIRED BY THE DEALER. BRAKE LAMP SWITCH ASSEMBLY WAS RECALLED IN 2006 AND REPLACED. 28,000 MILES LATER THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH ASSEMBLY HAS AGAIN FAILED. THIS HAS CAUSED THE BRAKE LIGHTS AND CRUISE CONTROL TO AGAIN MALFUNCTION. ADDITIONALLY, THE REVERSE LIGHTS HAVE FAILED AND THE FUSE CONTINUES TO FAIL. *TR

I WAS PULLED OVER BY A POLICE OFFICER TELLING ME THAT I HAD NO BRAKE LIGHTS. I HAD JUST PREVIOUSLY CHANGED THE BULBS, SO I SEARCHED FOR ALTERNATE PROBLEMS AND LOCATED THE RECALL NO. 06V139000. I CONTACTED MY DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THAT MY VIN # DOES NOT MATCH THE RECALL ORDER. I CONTACTED CHEVY OWNER SUPPORT AND THEY TOLD ME THE SAME THING, THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND A RECALL FOR MY VIN # AND THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE DATABASE SHOWING A RECALL EXISTED. *NM

WAS DRIVING AND WAS TOLD BY A PASSING VEHICLE THAT MY BRAKE LIGHTS WERE OUT, AND WHEN I ASKED WHICH ONE , THEY REPLIED ALL OF THEM. CRUISE CONTROL ALSO WOULD NOT WORK. DEALER FIXED IT SAYING THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH WAS THE CAUSE. *NM
2004 COLORADO CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH AND BRAKE LIGHTS WAS INOPERABLE. MECHANIC REPLACED THE FAULTY BRAKE SWITCH WHICH TOOK CARE OF THE PROBLEM AT THE TIME. *TS ***NAR*** AFTER THE ABOVE REPAIR THE CONSUMER WAS NOTIFIED THAT THE BRAKE LIGHTS HAD FAILED AGAIN. HE ALSO NOTICED THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL HAS ALSO CEASED TO FUNCTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TOT HE DEALER TO BE INSPECTED. AGAIN THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS A FAULTY BRAKE SWITCH. THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD BY ONE OF THE DEALER'S STAFF THAT CORROSION HAD BUILT UP BETWEEN THE CONNECTOR AND SOCKET FOR THE BRAKE SWITCH UNTIL AN ELECTRICAL CURRENT FAILED TO EXIST BETWEEN THE TWO. THE PROBLEM RECURRED TWO MORE TIMES. *NM
I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED TODAY AND THE DRIVER BEHIND ME CAME UP TO MY WINDOW AND TOLD ME THAT I HAD NO BRAKE LIGHTS, NOT EVEN THE CENTER LIGHT. I HAVE ALSO NOTICED THAT I HAVE NO CRUISE CONTROL. THE BULBS ARE NEW. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND ASKED THEM IF THEY HAVE SEEN THIS PROBLEM AND THEY SAID THEY HAVEN'T SEEN IT ON THE COLORADO. I CHECKED THE INTERNET AND FOUND SEVERAL OTHER OWNERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM, THEY DIRECTED ME TO THE NHTSA WEBSITE WHERE I FOUND THE OTHER COMPLAINTS. I TOLD THEM THAT THERE IS AN INTERNAL INVESTIGATION ON THE MATTER AND THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD LOOK AT THE TRUCK FOR $95 BUT THEY WOULD ONLY FIX THE PROBLEM FOR FREE IS THERE IS A RECALL. THE VEHICLE IS A 2004 CHEVROLET COLORADO. *JB
CHEVY COLORADO I HAD MY TRUCK FOR ABOUT 1 YEAR. I HAD ACTUALLY ALMOST GOT KILLED ON THE HIGHWAY DUE TO THE LIGHTS BEING OUT. *BRAKE LIGHTS* . THIS IS HAPPENING TO MANY PEOPLE I TALK TO. A FRIEND WHO HAPPENED TO BE DRIVING BEHIND ME MADE ME AWARE OF THE FACT THAT I HAD ABSOLUTELY NO BRAKE LIGHTS. I HAVE NO IDEA AS TO THE LENGTH OF TIME THAT I HAVE BEEN DRIVING AROUND IN THIS UNSAFE CONDITION. I HAVE HAD OTHER VEHICLES TAILGATE ME ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, NOW I KNOW WHY. ALTHOUGH I AM ENTERING DEC 16 05 AS THE INCIDENT DATE, THIS IS THE DATE IT WAS FIRST BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION. I HAVE NO IDEA AS TO HOW LONG IT WAS LIKE THIS. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER ON 12-19-05 AND I LEFT IT THERE UNTIL THEY REPLACED MY BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH ON 12-20-05 (BECAUSE THEY HAD TO GET ONE FROM ANOTHER DEALER). THEY SAID THEY HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY INFORMATION ON THIS PROBLEM AS TO A RECALL, ETC. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE!!! I HAVE READ THAT OTHERS HAVE THIS PROBLEM REPEAT AND I PRAY THAT I DON'T GET REAR-ENDED OR END UP DEAD BECAUSE OF A FAULTY SWITCH. BRAKE LIGHTS HAVE FAILED FOUR TIMES IN 18 MONTHS. ALL DEALER DOES IS REPLACE SWITCH. THE FIRST TIME THEY FAILED I NOTICED 2 VEHICLES NEARLY REAR ENDING ME. THEN SOMEONE TOLD ME I HAD NO BRAKE LIGHTS. NOW I KNOW BRAKE LIGHTS ARE OUT WHEN CRUISE CONTROL QUITS WORKING. GM WANTS TO GIVE $2,500 TO TRADE VEHICLE BUT SHOULDN'T THEY BE REQUIRED TO FIX PROBLEM.
