RECALLCampaign #18V755000

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE (EGR VALVE)

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. If the EGR cooler leaks internally, the coolant can mix with diesel engine soot. The high EGR temperatures may result in these particles possibly smoldering and melting the intake manifold.

Fix: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the EGR cooler as necessary. If a leak has already occurred, the engine intake manifold will also be replaced. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began May 13, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

BMW of North America, LLC. (BMW) is recalling certain 2012-2015 X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i, 2012-2016 Z4 sDrive28i, 528i, 528i xDrive, 328i, 328xi, 2016-2018 X5 xdrive 40e, 2014-2016 228i, 228xi, 428i, 428i xDrive, 328xi Gran Turismo, 2013-2017 X3 sDrive28i, X3 xDrive28i, 2015-2018 X4 xDrive28i, 2015-2016 428xi vehicles. An improperly sealed electrical connector on the water pump may be exposed to water and short circuit.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the water pump and plug connector as necessary, and install a protective shield, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 28, 2025. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

criticalENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Filed: Jan 2025

Your car suddenly lost power and stalled while driving, and warning lights appeared on the dashboard. A dealer diagnosed a complete engine failure and said your engine needs to be replaced. Even though a BMW recall exists for similar engine problems, your vehicle's VIN wasn't included in that recall. The engine replacement would involve removing the failed engine and installing a new one.

While driving, your engine overheated and multiple warning lights appeared on your dashboard. At the same time, your vehicle lost electrical power and had to be towed to a mechanic. Your engine oil pan has worn thin metal, causing oil to leak from the drain plug area. You're losing about a quart of oil every 600 miles, leaving oil on your engine and under the vehicle. Your dealer diagnosed that the oil pan needs to be replaced to stop the leak.

Your engine displayed an overheating warning and the check engine light came on while driving. When you restarted the vehicle, it wouldn't accelerate above 20 MPH. The dealer identified that your water pump needs to be replaced, though the repair hasn't been completed yet. Replacing the water pump should resolve both the overheating warning and the acceleration limitation.

Your engine suddenly lost power and wouldn't go faster than 35 mph while driving, and your dashboard showed an overheating warning. The dealer found that your water pump had failed and replaced it to fix the problem. You believe your car experienced the same issue covered by a BMW recall, but your vehicle's identification number wasn't included in that recall campaign. The water pump will need to be replaced by a mechanic.

Your 2017 BMW X5 is producing an abnormal smoke odor from the engine, both while driving and when parked with people inside. An independent mechanic inspected the vehicle but was unable to determine the cause. The issue started at 60,000 miles and hasn't been repaired yet. A proper diagnostic will be needed to identify what's causing the smell — it could range from a minor fluid leak to engine component wear.

THE CAR STOPPED WITHOUT ANY WARNING 3 TIME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WHILE DRIVING MY WIFE AND KIDS INSIDE THE CAR. I CONSIDER VERY LUCKY THIS HAPPENED ON COUNTY ROAD TWO TIME AND ONES IN THE SHOPPING CENTER PARKING LOT, INSTEAD OF MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE SECOND TIME THEY ARE STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT'S WRONG WITH GAUGES. LAST TIME IT HAPPENED WAS 11/13 WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING WITH THE DAUGHTER TO DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT, GAS READING SHOWS ABOVE 1/4 TANK AND 146 MILES REMAINING (I HAVE PICTURES OF THE CLUSTER). BUT THE CAR ABRUPTLY STOP TWITHOUGHT ANY WARNING WHICH WILL BE A DEADLY SITUATION IF HAPPENED IN THE HIGHWAY. THE REASON FOR IT TO STOP WAS NO GAS IN THE TANK THOUGH IT GIVES A READING OF OVER 1/4 TANK 146 MILES REMAINING. MY LAST VISIT TO THE DEALER WAS ABOUT A MONTH BACK AND I WAS TOLD THEY REPLACED THE GAS TANK AND THE SENSOR INSIDE THE TANK WHICH WAS COVERED UNDER VEHICLE WARRANTY. I FEEL VERY UNSAFE DRIVING THIS CAR, I HAVE REPORTED THE ISSUES BMW NA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THE CAR IS WITH BMW OF ROCKVILLE.
