The Gates Corporation (Gates) is recalling certain aftermarket Tru-Flow Water Pumps, part number TFW 41127, sold at certain NAPA Auto Parts and/or installed by automotive service technicians after November 1, 2013 (and manufactured August 2013 through October 2013) that have a black-colored pulley/sprocket or do not have 'US9377' stamped on the water pump housing. These service replacement parts were sold for use in model year 1999-2005 Audi A4, 2000-2006 Audi TT, 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle, 1999-2006 Golf, 1999-2008 and 2011-2013 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2000-2005 Volkswagen Passat. In the affected water pumps, the pulley or sprocket that turns the timing belt may develop microfractures causing the timing belt to fail.
Risk: A failure of the timing belt may cause the engine to shut down, potentially increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Fix: Gates will notify owners, and dealers will replace the water pump, free of charge. The recall began during May 2014. Owners may contact The Gates Corporation at 1-303-744-1911.

Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 148)
Fuel/propulsion System →6 issues
Your car's fuel tank has developed a large crack, causing intense gasoline odors inside the cabin that made you ill after a short drive. A VW dealer confirmed this is the same fuel tank failure that prompted a previous recall, but VW refused to cover repairs since your car was fixed in 2015 with a replacement part and is outside the warranty period. The fuel fumes are now at toxic levels, making the car unsafe to drive or park in an enclosed garage. The fix will require replacing the fuel tank with a new one.

You've noticed a strong diesel fuel smell coming from the rear of your vehicle, especially around the fuel tank area, both inside and outside. After driving, you occasionally see small puddles of diesel fuel leaking from below the fuel tank and dripping from the lower frame near the fuel pump area. A diagnostic scan found a fault code related to the fuel pump control module with no communication, and you're concerned this may be related to a diesel fuel pump recall that affected 2004 models but your 2005 model wasn't officially included. The repair will likely involve inspecting and possibly replacing the fuel pump assembly.

Your Passat is leaking fuel from underneath the fuel tank, and you notice a strong fuel smell both when driving and when the car is parked. With only 72,000 miles on the vehicle, this is concerning and poses a potential safety risk. The fuel leak will need to be inspected to identify the source—whether it's a damaged fuel line, a faulty fuel tank seal, or a corroded connection—and the affected component will need to be repaired or replaced.

After completely filling your fuel tank, you noticed a strong gasoline smell and puddles under your car near the driver's side rear wheel. The leak only appeared while driving, not while parked. A mechanic diagnosed the problem as fuel leaking from a seam in the fuel tank itself. The fuel tank will likely need to be replaced or professionally sealed to stop the leak.

You notice a fuel smell inside your car when starting it or driving at various speeds. Your check engine light and anti-slip regulator warning light have also come on. The dealership told you your vehicle wasn't included in a fuel system recall campaign, so the issue wasn't diagnosed or fixed.

Engine →3 issues
Your diesel Passat's engine may suddenly shut down due to failure of the chain-driven oil pump assembly, which can break and destroy the engine. When this happens, you lose power steering and brakes while driving, creating a dangerous situation. The fix involves replacing the chain-driven oil pump assembly with a gear-driven one, though this repair is expensive and often comes too late if the engine has already failed.

Your engine is showing low oil pressure due to sludge buildup inside the engine. This happened even though you bought the car as a certified pre-owned vehicle with 60,000 miles, and the problem wasn't caught until 100,000 miles. You may need a complete engine replacement to fix this issue.

Steering,service Brakes,engine →1 issue
Your car suddenly lost power and stopped running, which also caused you to lose brake function and power steering. This happened because the oil pump's internal splines wore down after the timing chain failed, which is a known issue with many complaints online. This is a serious safety problem since a dead engine means no braking power. Fixing this requires replacing the timing chain, oil pump, and related components.

Electrical System,structure →1 issue
Your car's electronic control module and body module are malfunctioning, preventing you from opening the doors from the outside without first rolling down the windows, and sometimes the inside door handles won't work either. This creates a serious safety risk, especially in an emergency like a crash or fire when you need to exit quickly. The door locks work intermittently—sometimes functioning normally and sometimes not at all. Fixing this typically requires replacing or reprogramming the faulty electronic control modules.

Seats →1 issue
Your seat heater malfunctioned while you were driving at 70 mph, burning a hole through the passenger seat and burning the passenger's coat. This is a serious defect that created a fire hazard inside your vehicle. The seat heater element likely failed or had a wiring issue that caused it to overheat uncontrollably.

Steering,engine →1 issue
Your engine made unusual noises and then stopped running completely. When you tried to restart it, you heard loud banging sounds from the engine as the starter attempted to turn it over, and your steering and brakes became very difficult to operate. An inspection revealed that your crankshaft had broken, which prevented the engine from restarting and required the vehicle to be towed away.

Air Bags,service Brakes →1 issue
Your brake pedal travels all the way to the floor when you press it, indicating a brake system failure. Even after the dealer replaced the brake booster, the problem continued, and during a 32 mph drive, your brakes completely failed, causing you to crash into another vehicle—and your airbags did not deploy during the collision. The dealer was unable to identify or fix the underlying issue despite multiple service attempts.

Seat Belts →1 issue
Your seat belt inertia reel isn't releasing the webbing properly, even though the car is on level ground and hasn't been in an accident. This means the seat belt may be too tight or won't extend fully when you try to use it. The inertia reel mechanism may need to be repaired or replaced to restore normal seat belt operation.

Electrical System,engine →1 issue
Your car's engine overheated and the timing belt failed. This is a serious issue that requires immediate attention, as a broken timing belt can prevent your engine from running and cause additional damage. The repair will involve replacing the timing belt and diagnosing the cause of the overheating, which could be related to the cooling system or engine components.

Power Train, vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
While performing a DIY oil change, you may accidentally drain the transmission fluid instead of engine oil because the drain plugs are located similarly and the fluids look alike. You might notice the car suddenly accelerating on its own and then getting stuck in a higher gear. The issue resolved after refilling the transmission fluid, but the complaint suggests a design flaw in drain plug placement that could confuse other owners. A transmission fluid refill or system inspection may be needed to restore normal operation.

Unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your car has intermittent starting problems where the engine cranks but won't start, sometimes taking 15 minutes to 5 hours to restart—the wait time seems to depend on how long you drove before shutting it off. A diagnostic code pointed to a faulty crankshaft position sensor (CPS), which you replaced, but you're still experiencing random starting failures and the same code keeps appearing, especially in rainy weather. You've also noticed the engine speed fluctuates while driving. The problem is difficult to diagnose because it won't consistently fail at a mechanic's shop. A complete electrical and sensor system inspection, including the crankshaft position sensor wiring and connectors, may be needed to find the root cause.

Unknown Or Other,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your check engine light keeps coming back on with engine misfires—this is the fourth time it's happened, and each repair costs around $2,000 but only lasts a short while. You've already replaced the oil pump, spark plugs, and fuel injectors, and recently had the timing belt, injectors, and gaskets replaced, but the same problems returned within two months. Your engine is now shuttering and trying to stall while driving. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the root cause of the misfires, which could require engine oil system cleaning or further fuel system and ignition component service.
