ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE NHTSA DEFECT INVESTIGATION #PE10027 1.AT ABOUT 2:45 IN CVS 2.WAITED ABOUT 10 MINUTES 3.I WAS PAGED BY IDENTIFICATION OF MY CAR 4.ADVISED CAR ON FIRE 5.A MAN IN A DEFFENBAUGH UNIFORM WAS TRYING TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE FRONT OF THE CAR 6.THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER WAS AGGRAVATING THE FLAMES 7.I ADVISED HIM TO STAND BACK 8.I ASKED IF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT HAD BEEN CALLED 9.A CVS EMPLOYEE DID CONTACT FIRE DEPARTMENT TWO TIMES 10.CVS PHARMACY EMPLOYEE CAME OUT ' HER CAR WAS PARKED TWO SPACES TO THE PASSENGER SIDE OF MY CAR 11.THE MAN FROM DEFFENBAUGH MOVED HER CAR 12.AN OLDER MAN APPROACHED MAN AND SAID THAT HE WAS THE ONE WHO REPORTED THE FIRE 13.HE WAS WALKING IN FRONT OF MY CAT TO ENTER THE STORE AND SPARKS WHERE COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD 14.THE FIRE SPREAD RAPIDLY 15.WHAT LOOKED TO BE LIKE CARD BOARD SUBSTANCE WAS FALLING TO THE GROUND TOWARD THE FRONT OF THE CAR 16.THE PRODUCT WAS ENGULFED IN FLAME. NOTICED A LEAKING GAS TANK ON MY 2003 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT THIS HAS OCCURRED. HOWEVER, THERE HAS BEEN SEVERAL RECALLS ON THIS CAR THAT PERTAIN TO ISSUES WITH THE FUEL LINE, GAS TANK CAP, HEAT SHIELD AND GAS TANK. AFTER NOTICING THIS LEAK, I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE CAR INTO THE VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE BECAUSE THE AMOUNT OF GAS LEAKING FROM THE REAR END OF THE CAR WAS FAIRLY SUBSTANTIAL AND ENOUGH TO EASILY CAUSE A SERIOUS FIRE. ONCE AT THE DEALER, THEY SAID THAT THE ISSUE WAS THE GAS CAP/NOZZLE THAT IS CONNECTED TO THE GAS TANK. THIS NOZZLE IS VERY SMALL AND SEEMS TO BE VERY BRITTLE, EASY TO BREAK OFF. MY CONCERN IS THAT THERE ARE A NUMBER OF THESE CARS ON THE ROAD THAT SPONTANEOUSLY SEEM TO START LEAKING GASOLINE FROM THEIR FUEL TANKS. AS I WAS NEVER INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT, NEVER WENT DOWN A DIRT ROAD OR EVEN HIT A SPEED BUMP ALL OF WHICH MIGHT (IN A REMOTE CIRCUMSTANCE) CAUSE THE NOZZLE TO BREAK. *TR

ON AUGUST 25, 2007, I WAS DRIVING MY 2003 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT GLX WITH WIFE AND DAUGHTER ON THE MIDDLE LANE ON HWY 101. THE CAR WAS STALLED SUDDENLY AND NO SIGN OF ANYTHING WRONG. I FELT NO POWER ON THE PEDAL. I TURNED ON THE EMERGENCY LIGHT AND SLOWLY PULLED IT OVER TO THE RIGHT LANE. THE HWY TRAFFIC WAS PASSING WITH LIFE THREATENING NOISE. I STOPPED THE CAR AT THE RIGHT LANE AND BLOCK THE TRAFFIC. FINALLY A POLICE CAR PASSED BY AND CALLED FOR HELP. SEVERAL POLICE CARS CAME AND BLOCKED THE WHOLE TRAFFIC ON HWY101 AND ONE OF THEM PUSHED MY OFF THE NEXT EXIT. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A VOLKSWAGEN SHOP AND FOUND THE FUEL PUMP WAS GONE. I CALLED THE VOLKSWAGEN USA AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS A RECALL FOR FUEL PUMP BUT MY VIN WAS NOT IN THE RANGE. THIS WAS A LIFE THREADING EVENT I WOULD REMEMBER IT WAS BY VOLKSWAGEN. I WAS A ROYAL CUSTOMER FOR VOLKSWAGEN AND AFTER THIS EVENT I COULD NOT BELIEVE I WOULD BE ONE. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT. ON MARCH 05, 2005 AT 32,000 MILES, THE ENGINE FAILED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER FOUND A FAULTY ENGINE SPEED SENSOR AND FUEL PUMP. THE PARTS WERE REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. IN FEBRUARY OF 2007, WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, THE ENGINE FAILED AGAIN WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THEY DISCOVERED A FAULTY FUEL PUMP. THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED AT 90,000 MILES, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. CURRENTLY, THE ENGINE LIGHT IS STILL ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT RECALL NUMBER 06V017000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP) DOES NOT APPLY TO THE VIN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 100,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.

ON JANUARY 17 I HAD WORK PERFORMED FOR RECALL 01V157000 , WHICH INVOLVED REPLACING THE FUEL SENDING UNIT TO PREVENT THE CAR FROM RUNNING OUT OF GAS WHEN THE FUEL GUAGE INDICATED A FULL TANK. ON JANUARY 20, I EXPERIENCED THE VERY PROBLEM THAT THE RECALL WAS SUPPOSED TO CORRECT. I HAD NOT PREVIOUSLY EXPERINECED THIS PROBLEM. I RAN OUT OF GAS, ALTHOUGH THE FUEL GUAGE SHOWED MORE THAN 1/4 TANK REMAINING.
