2021 Volkswagen Id.4 Electrical Problems

The onboard system for connecting the car to the 4g data has failed. Many many people online are reporting this issue. It is a safety issue because there is a loss of the SOS system that alerts authorities that the car has crashed.

Warning Lights Triggering at Random: The vehicle randomly displays warning lights while driving, causing me panic and concern that the car may be unsafe or about to malfunction. I have brought this to the dealership’s attention on multiple occasions ([insert dates if known]), but they were unable to diagnose or fix the problem. Despite this, the warning lights continue to appear intermittently.

I was driving my 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S on March 12, 2025, in Baltimore, Maryland, when I was involved in a motor vehicle accident. Although I maintained an adequate stopping distance from the truck in front of me, my forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assistance systems suddenly activated, causing my vehicle to make contact with the truck.

Due to unresolved safety recalls I do not drive the VW ID4. I am afraid that I might get into an accident if the vehicle doors open, visual screen goes blank or all electrical power shuts off. NHTSA should demand VW of America to get rid of all their electric cars that have no remedy in place for safety.

Electronic brake system failure - the vehicle exhibited this issue and so far it appears Volkswagen does not have a resolution. Vehicle has been at the dealership for almost 2 months and they have not been able to fix. Several other reports show that this is a consistent issue with the ID4 (probably the first edition).

The two noted open recalls on my 2021 ID.4 have no fix. There has already been one battery cell replaced and another has gone bad. The vehicles lease ends in two weeks and the dealer, understandably, cannot take it as a trade for another vehicle, sell it to us, or resell it as it will sit on the lot until it is picked up by Volkswagen and totaled out due to it being unsellable.

This problem is very intermittent but also very dangerous. It's happened to me three times in the last month. All three times, while I was making a left hand turn, the accelerator stopped working.

My car's display screen which shows the speed has now malfunctioned twice while driving and today while reversing the car, the center screen displaying the rear camera also reset mid-driving. In both cases, I turned off the car waited a few minutes, restarted the car twice and then the display came back on but who knows when the display will crash again.

I have received several recall notices over the past 12 months, including urgent email, texts and letters, notices directly from VW, warning me the urgency of the recall,. I have been attempting to schedule an appointment with the dealer where I purchased the vehicle from in Santa Rosa, CA. The dealer has been uncooperative, and not able to provide an appointment date.

The vehicle has shot down twice when about to leave my garage and has gone dead, zero lights, completely dead. I have had to step out of the car, wait a few seconds before getting in again and pushing the brake to wake him up (it’s an EV). All this in a period of two weeks a couple of months ago.

I was attempting to trade in my Id.4 for a Tesla and found out that my car had a major safety recall from Tesla. The recall has been out since Feb and I was never notified from VW. Your car's center console and infotainment system sometimes freeze or restart on their own, which causes the speedometer to stop working and display zero even though you're driving at 30-40 mph. These freezes last 2-3 minutes until you force a restart by holding the power button. You've also noticed the backup camera occasionally fails to display images, a problem that started after updating to software version 3.5.

The vehicle has been in to the dealer multiple times for electrical system failures. The car is not safe to drive and has stalled multiple times while driving. The system has errors that light up stating there is an electrical system failure.

These recalls are old: February 7, May 5, and August 25 of last year. My local dealership, Hansel Volkswagen, 2951 Corby Ave, Santa Rosa, CA 95407 (1-707-578-1320), is unable to get the parts for these repairs from VW of America, even though WV of America is steadily building new cars. My 2021 ID4 is still not repaired.

Intermittent problem since purchasing the car in September 2021: if child safety lock is engaged when parking the car and the doors are otherwise unlocked, upon exiting the car, the rear doors will not open from the outside. Clicking unlock on the key FOB won't unlock the doors. I need to power the car on again and deactivate the lock from within the car.

UNKNOWN All LCD screens would not display an image including the one that displays the speed at which the vehicle is traveling. The only difference from normal was the car sitting in the sun for a few hours and the back of the LCDs being hot to the touch. Was able to remedy by running the AC on Lo with the car empty for about 20 minutes.

I contacted several local Volkswagen dealers regarding safety recall (Manufacturer Recall Number97ZZ, NHTSA Recall Number23V040) to get my vehicle repaired. None of them have parts associated with this repair and told me it will take more than a year to get them. I contacted VW customer service and they are unable to help resolve the issue.

I have made multiple appointments at WINN VW of Woodland Hills, CA to have these recalls repaired (57J5, 97ZZ) only to have the dealership cancel the appointments both times. I called Galpin VW of Van Nuys, CA and was told flat out that they would not schedule my vehicle for repairs. I was last given an appointment of January 8th, 2024 by Santa Monica VW of Santa Monica CA.

Blind spot warning system on both sides doesn't always work. Sometimes indicating a vehicle and sometimes not. Also, multiple computer software problems and the dealer doesn"t know when the other recalls can be fixed.

My local dealer can't fix because they don't have a HV technician and when I called another I was told I can't get it fixed until April, 2024. Driver's door keeps unlocking while driving. Swung open several times while driving. Also, sometimes difficult to unlock driver's door from the outside.

I was driving around 45 MPH when several warning lights lit up on my dashboard at the same time, indicating an issue with the battery. The car slowly rolled to a stop, and I had no control of the vehicle. This was in the middle of traffic and very dangerous.

The driver side door no longer automatically unlocks from the outside of the car when pressed with fingers near door handle. Door can only be unlocked or locked with the key fob. Battery popping sounds As I charge my vehicle, or drive the vehicle, the battery makes one sporadic loud "Pop" sound that is felt and heard from anywhere you are sitting in the vehicle. I was told this was "normal" and to be "expected" because the battery is "expanding". However, when talking to other ID4 owners, they do not experience this same sound.

On my VW ID4 AWD, when I depress the brake to engage to start car the following message appears..."Electrical system not working properly, please service car immediately". I have brought car in several times and tech cannot replicate issue despite multiple images on multiple occasions of same apparent problem.

While driving, both the driver’s and center console displays stopped displaying information and went blank. The panels were still on but nothing displayed. The ID.4 console panel is known to not turn on or be blank, the solution is to press the console power button for 10-15 seconds to reboot the system.

I was on the freeway going 70 MPH. Red warning lights came on saying to stop car immediately. The car lost all power.

I bought a new ID4 from VW, it is 2 weeks old. Multiple times it has shown multiple error messages such as "Electrical system not working" then stops in the middle of the road. I am unable to change the drive from neutral or move the car, sometimes pushing the start button several times finally turns it off.

On 9/28, I purchased my vehicle from Fairfax Volkswagen. On that date, I noticed the error message on the display, but the salesman said it was nothing to worry about. That following week, I noticed several vehicles flashing their lights at me.

The vehicle went into complete shutdown, it was unable to be placed into Drive or Reverse and vehicle was completely immobile. Various warnings appeared on the instrument cluster. After letting the vehicle sit it was returned to the dealer, where they experienced the same issues, but eventually replaced various electrical components and re-booted/re-programmed the systems.

Instrument panel went completely dark. Lost all information. Needed to pull the car over to the curb.

Multiple issues with this vehicle. Have had door handle recall completed, however now doors will randomly not open from inside or outside, even after verifying child lock is off and doors are unlocked. Same issue with trunk, almost always a fight to get it to open/release.

My 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 frequently disconnects from the network while driving. When this happens, multiple vehicle systems stop working as intended. The built-in GPS begins to drift or shows incorrect vehicle position, making navigation unreliable and unsafe.

The main console display (e.g. Speedometer, Cruise Control, Dashboard) is displaying an error message: "Warnings and Information not available. Drive with Greater Care".

The car will periodically lock with the key inside the car. This is potentially deadly for women to keep their keys in their purses. When they exit the vehicle, the door may lock, trapping a small child in a hot car.

After the 919A recall My screen experiences the issue that recall was supposed to fix more often now once it shut down for 10 minutes. While I was driving on the highway another time, it decided to reboot the screen and it was unable to adjust.

Both screens went black while I was driving. This is after the fix from the recall.

My driver side door electronics are all messed up. The electric door handle does not work from the outside. While driving however I can hear the door latch clicking like it is trying to open.

A mandatory safety software update was displayed on my screen. I followed the instructions to start then over the air update and my car never turned on again. The update fried the CPU module and VW said not our problem.

VW still has not remedied the rebooting screens issue from their May recall. If the main driver information screen shuts off, cruise control and lane keep also shut off, which means the vehicle slows down and will not continue following the lane, resulting in the vehicle possibly being put in a dangerous situation.

The manufacturer has failed or is unable to remedy the safety recall for my vehicle in a timely manner. It has currently been in there possession for over 30 days with multiple failed attempts to correct the recall/issue with my vehicle.

Got in my car today and have NO DASHBOARD INFORMATION, no speedometer, no battery information, no back up camera, no access to any software related information.

Description matches to Recall 24V344 has just happened to my car today while I was driving on freeway. It was a scary experience.

No information displayed on main large monitor. No buttons response. Monitor over steering wheel does not display speed.

The car was inoperative because it would not allow the driver to shift from neutral to drive or reverse. There was an error code with the emergency break and the auto hold break.

I am writing because VW has been unable to fix the recalls associated with my car. The earliest they say they can fix the major recall associated with the car battery is December 2024. This is unacceptable and I hoping the NHTSA can put pressure on VW to fix this problem.

On 5/10/2023 I got into the vehicle, started, put it in Drive, and noticed the FRONT PASSENGER DOOR was showing ajar in the instrument cluster. I grabbed the door and confirmed it had become unlatched and had to close it again. On 5/16/2023 I again was in the vehicle, in drive, but not moving when the FRONT PASSENGER DOOR opened on its own with no occupant.

Instrument cluster returned error "warnings and information not available. Drive with greater care!" While vehicle was in motion. Issue resulted in loss of speedometer and other systeam safety features including blind spot monitoring, lane assist etc.

2021 Volkswagen ID.4-Consumer sent Copy of letter sent to Volkswagen Group of America attached. Consumer has not received the 1st software update after 2 years. Mentions Safety Recall 9722 and Service Action # 93P7.

The driver's side door opens randomly when the vehicle is driving and continues to open even if the driver manually shuts the door. When the vehicle is in park the Driver's side door will not open, even when the manual procedure is used.

It happened to me at least 3 times. The first one happened Oct, 2021, when I did not realize it is a big serious problem. The other two happened in Aug 2022 and Oct 2022, respectively.

During a trip driving home 3/31/2023 at approximately 11:00pm, the car's software system failed. The console that displays the digital speedometer was affected on the car as well as the infotainment system. The message on the console displayed a message "Warnings and Information not available.

I have to drive my car with the knowledge that it's basically unsafe. Volkswagen has been completely silent about this problem for far too long.

At a red light, upon releasing the break to accelerate, the vehicle turned off. Meaning, the vehicle went from drive mode "D" to park "P" when I accelerated as the light turned green. This occured without prior warning that it would shift into "P".

12 volt system; 12 volt battery has aged very quickly (1 year) causing the voltage to drop overnight whereby the internal systems shutdown and report an error. If the car sits idle for 2-3 days, the voltage drops to the point where the car must reboot entirely, which includes an audio sweep calibration from the pedestrian warning speakers.

1)The computer screen has delays or freezes or rear view camera not always activates. Generally problem with software which can cause safety hazard when I’m driving an causes distraction if it’s not working. 2)traction control turns on automatically almost on all curved exits or entrances to the highway.

An error message displayed while the vehicle was idle at a parking lot. "Electrical system not operating correctly" Everything worked fine but this message did not go away.

On multiple occasions, my brand new ID.4 has shut down while driving giving various error messages relating to the electrical system and safety features--including with the electrical system generally, with the "12 Volt electrical system", with the auto assist braking, with lane assist, etc.

The infotainment panel sporadically shuts off. This has happened four times in the two months I’ve owned the car. Safety features like the backup camera, proximity sensors, and safety feature controls are not accessible.
