VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL
TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT.
Fix: TOYOTA FILED AN AMENDED DEFECT REPORT ON NOVEMBER 25, 2009, STATING THAT DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND, ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, ALTER THE SHAPE OF THE FLOOR SURFACE UNDER THE PEDAL. THESE CHANGES ADDRESS THE RISK OF PEDAL ENTRAPMENT DUE TO INTERFERENCE WITH THE FLOOR MAT. REDESIGNED ACCELERATOR PEDALS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE BEGINNING IN APRIL 2010 AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY MODIFIED PEDAL WITH THE NEW PEDAL IF DESIRED. ALSO, DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY GENUINE TOYOTA OR LEXUS ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MATS WITH REDESIGNED ALL-WEATHER MATS, OR REPURCHASE THE PREVIOUS MATS FROM OWNERS WHO DO NOT WANT THE NEW ONES. ADDITIONALLY, SOFTWARE MODIFICATIONS WILL BE INSTALLED ON CAMRY, AVALON AND LEXUS ES 350, IS 350 AND IS 250 MODELS THAT WILL ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE OVERRIDES THE ACCELERATOR IN THE EVENT BOTH BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS ARE APPLIED. TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2010 AVALON, MODEL YEAR 2007-2010 CAMRY, MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 COROLLA, COROLLA MATRIX, RAV4, MODEL YEAR 2010 HIGHLANDER, MODEL YEAR 2008-2010 SEQUOIA, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2010 TUNDRA VEHICLES. DUE TO THE MANNER IN WHICH THE FRICTION LEVER INTERACTS WITH THE SLIDING SURFACE OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL INSIDE THE PEDAL SENSOR ASSEMBLY, THE SLIDING SURFACE OF THE LEVER MAY BECOME SMOOTH DURING VEHICLE OPERATION. IN THIS CONDITION, IF CONDENSATION OCCURS ON THE SURFACE, AS MAY OCCUR FROM HEATER OPERATION (WITHOUT A/C) WHEN THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY IS COLD, THE FRICTION WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS OPERATED MAY INCREASE, WHICH MAY RESULT IN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECOMING HARDER TO DEPRESS, SLOWER TO RETURN, OR, IN THE WORST CASE, MECHANICALLY STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION.
Fix: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A REINFORCEMENT BAR IN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WHICH WILL ALLOW THE PEDAL TO OPERATE SMOOTHLY. GM WILL NOTIFY OWNERS FOR THE PONTIAC VIBE PLEASE SEE 10V-018. Your accelerator pedal stuck in the pressed position on five separate occasions, causing your truck to continue accelerating even after you released the pedal and applied the brakes. You had to manually lift the pedal with your foot to stop the acceleration. This happened in both city and highway driving and created dangerous situations where you nearly hit other vehicles. Your Toyota dealership confirmed all previous accelerator recalls were completed but refused to service the uncontrolled acceleration problem.

I AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY TRUCK. WHEN DRIVING IT. IT LOOSES POWER. ENGINE SHAKES.. GOES FROM OKAY TO LOSS OF POWER TO BACK TO HAVING POWER. IN CODES ARE SHOWING UP WHEN PLACED ON THE COMPUTER. I HAVE REPLACED SPARK PLUGS AND WIRES. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO TOYOTA AND THEY ADVISED ME THAT THEIR HAS BEEN RECALLS WITH FUEL PUMP AND COULD BE THE PROBLEM I AM HAVING.
CRUISE CONTROL RANDOMLY STOPS WORKING. WORKS PERFECTLY FOR A FEW DAYS THEN QUITS. SOMETIMES THE CRUISE LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED BUT THE CRUISE CONTROL STILL DOES NOT FUNCTION. THE ISSUE SEEMS TO BE RELATED TO THE STEERING COLUMN. SOMETIMES WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED LOCK TO LOCK THE CRUISE CONTROL THEN OPERATES NORMALLY. LOCAL MECHANIC SAYS THIS MAY BE THE "CLOCK GEAR" WHICH IS VERY EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE.
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS LIT. A FEW WEEKS LATER VSC LIGHT STARTED BLINKING. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ENGINE WOULD EXHIBIT AN ABNORMALLY HIGH INCREASE IN RPMS AT STARTUP AND THE MOTOR WOULD RACE LOUDLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO ADVISED THAT THE FAILURE COULD POSSIBLY HAVE BEEN RELATED TO THE AIR INJECTION PUMP OR THE AIR SWITCH DEVICE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000.
ON 10-30-11 AT APPROXIMATELY 4:35 PM I PARKED MY 2008 TOYOTA TACOMA IN FRONT OF STEVE'S SMALL ENGINE, A BUSINESS LOCATED IN MONSON MA. AFTER PLACING THE VEHICLE IN PARK, THE TRUCK ACCELERATOR STUCK OPEN AND THE TRUCK LEAPED AHEAD WHILE I HAD MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND WAS DEPRESSING THE BRAKE AS HARD AS I COULD PUSH IT TOWARD THE FLOOR. MY VEHICLE STRUCK A PARKED PICKUP TRUCK IN THE TAILGATE. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE MONSON POLICE DEPT. AND REPORTED THE EVENT. THE MONSON POLICE RESPONDED AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED.
DRIVING ALONG APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH DEPRESSED ACCELERATOR PEDAL SLIGHTLY TOOK FOOT OFF PEDAL VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE INCREASING SPEED. I IMMEDIATELY DEPRESSED BRAKE PLACING VEHICLE INTO NEUTRAL THEN AGAIN PRESSING ON THE ACCELERATOR AND RELEASING IT. THE ENGINE REVVED BACK TO NORMAL. I THEN PLACED IT BACK INTO DRIVE WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THIS OCCURRED SINCE PURCHASE OF THIS VEHICLE IN 2007. THE CONTACT TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND THEN BACK ON IN ORDER FOR IT TO RESET ITSELF AND BEGAN TO FUNCTION NORMALLY. THE DEALERS DIAGNOSIS INDICATED THAT THERE WAS NO FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 29,800 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 30,000.
AT 9052 MILES ENTERED GAS STATION AND VEHICLE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION OCCURRED WHILE TURNING OFF ENGINE. AT 9076 MILES PARKED VEHICLE IN HANDICAPPED STALL IN FRONT OF WALGREENS PHARMACY. VEHICLE HAD UNINTENDED ACCELERATION AND WAS BURNING RUBBER AND ATTEMPTED TO GO FORWARD EXCEPT I WAS STEPPING ON THE BRAKE AS HARD AS I COULD AND TURNED OFF THE IGNITION, OTHERWISE WE WOULD HAVE GONE THRU THE FRONT ENTRANCE OF THE PHARMACY. THE ASPHALT WAS DRY. THERE WERE DARK BLACK TIRE MARKS ON THE ASPHALT FROM MY RIGHT REAR TIRE, WHICH ALSO APPEARED TO SHOW WEAR FROM BURNING RUBBER. THIS IS MY 5TH UNINTENDED ACCELERATION SINCE LATE OCT .MILEAGE 8794. WITH TOYOTA STATING IT WAS AN ENGINE MISFIRE. AND TOYOTA MOTORS INSPECTING THE VEHICLE ONLY TO SAY THE VEHICLE IS FINE. PRIOR COMPLAIN #10365905. UNINTENDED ACCELERATION / INTERSECTION / GARAGE DOOR TWICE WHILE BURNING RUBBER.
UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. I WAS IN A STOP POSITION WAITING FOR TRAFFIC SIGNAL TO CHANGE, WHEN THE VEHICLE WANTED TO ACCELERATE ON IT OWN THRU THE INTERSECTION, WHILE MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. THE TRAFFIC SIGNAL WAS STILL RED FOR ME. THE ENGINE INDICATOR LIGHT WAS ON, VSC OFF, TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM INDICATOR WAS ALSO LITE. MULTI-INFORMATION DISPLAY MPG GALLON GAUGE WAS GETTING STUCK AT 60MILES PER GALLON. TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR KEEP COMING ON. VEH. STARTED TO IDLE ROUGH. I TOOK MY VEH. TO THE TOYOTA DEALER FOR INSPECTION AND SERVICE. THEY KEEP MY VEH. FROM APPROX FROM OCT 29,10 TO NOV.6,10. TOYOTA DEALER RESPONSE WAS THAT THE ENGINE HAD A SEVERE MISFIRE THAT MAY HAVE BEEN TAKEN FOR A SLIGHT SURGE. THE #1 & 3 FUEL INJECTORS REPLACED. ACCELERATION PEDAL REPLACED. ON NOV. 13,10 THE VEH. HAD UNINTENDED ACCELERATION ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASION WHEN PARKING VEH. IN DRIVEWAY. THE VEHICLE WAS BURNING RUBBER WHILE I HAD FOOT ON BRAKE, BECAUSE WE WOULD HAVE GONE THRU GARAGE DOOR. I CALLED THE TOYOTA DEALER FROM LOCATION, WHO MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR 11-15-10 AT 7AM. DEALER STATED THAT TOYOTA WAS COMING DOWN ON THURSDAY 11-18-10 TO INSPECT VEHICLE. I DID NOT HEAR A BACKFIRE FROM ENGINE ON 1ST INCIDENT. 2ND INCIDENT HAD TWO PASSENGERS,, AND TWO WORKERS WAITING AT LOCATION WHO WITNESSED BOTH INCIDENTS. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THE ORIGINAL ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS MODIFIED BUT THE DEALERSHIP CUT TOO MUCH OFF AND THE PEDAL WAS TOO SHORT AND HIGH. SHE WASN'T ABLE TO REACH OR MAINTAIN HER FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL. SHE WAS AFRAID OF CRASHING. THE DEALER ADVISED THEY COULD REPLACE THE GAS PEDAL WITH THE MODIFIED PEDAL BUT IT WILL BE SMALLER AND SHORT THAN THE ORIGINAL MODIFICATION. THE MANUFACTURER TOOK A REPORT AND ADVISED HER THAT SHE COULD HAVE THE DEALER REPLACED THE GAS PEDAL. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WERE 46,000.

I NOTIFIED TOYOTA ABOUT THIS PROBLEM WHEN IN 2010, MY VEHICLE WAS RECALLED FOR ACCELERATOR PROBLEMS. TOYOTA REPLACED THE ACCELERATOR. I CONTINUED TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE SENSITIVE ACCELERATOR UNTIL A DISTRICT SERVICE MANAGER NOTIFIED ME THAT MY VEHICLE'S ACCELERATOR WAS NORMAL. HE FURTHER INDICATED THAT NEW TUNDRA'S HAD THE SAME ACCELERATOR FEEL AS MINE. THE DISTRICT MANAGER STATED THAT HE HAD PARKED MY VEHICLE NEXT TO A NEW VEHICLE IN CASE I WANTED TO COMPARE THE NEW VEHICLE TO MINE. I DID NOT COMPARE THE TWO VEHICLES. HOWEVER, I FEEL THE ACCELERATOR IN MY VEHICLE IS A HAZARD AND SHOULD BE EXAMINED FOR THE SAFETY OF THOSE WHO OWN TOYOTA TUNDRA'S. *TR

THE DEALER MODIFIED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND SHORTENED THE LENGTH TO PREVENT POSSIBLE PEDAL ENTRAPMENT BY THE FLOOR MAT. THE CONTACT WAS NOT SATISFIED WITH THE LENGTH OF THE PEDAL AND STATED HIS FOOT WOULD FALL UNDERNEATH THE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES WHILE DRIVING. IN ADDITION, HIS SHOE STRINGS WOULD ALSO BECOME CAUGHT ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, CAUSING UNWANTED ACCELERATION. THE DEALER ADVISED THE RECALL WAS A ONE-TIME REPAIR AND WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 40,000.
I HAVE A 2008 TOYOTA TUNDRA WITH APPROX 48,000 MILES. THE TRUCK IS "LIMPING" AROUND WITH NO POWER. I CANNOT DRIVE IT ON THE INTERSTATE AS IT WILL NOT GO OVER 45 OR 50 MPH. IT WILL NOT ACCELERATE COMFORTABLY EITHER, SERVICE INDICATOR LIGHTS ARE ON. I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER WHO SAID THAT IT NEEDS $3300 WORTH OF REPAIRS. I HAVE NOT HAD THIS PROBLEM FIXED DUE TO THE COST. THEY TELL ME IT IS THE SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM AND THAT I NEED TO HAVE 2 PUMPS AND CONTROL VALVES REPLACED. THE COMPUTER CODE IT READS IS "P2442". THERE IS A TSB ON THIS ERROR (0329-08). AFTER RESEARCHING THESE PART NUMBERS (17610-0S010 (2 OF THESE) AND 25701-38060), THERE SEEMS TO BE MANY CONSUMERS WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM I HAVE. THERE ALSO SEEMS TO BE A QUESTION OF THIS BEING A DESIGN OR ENGINEERING FAILURE OF THESE PARTS. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, THIS SYSTEM FAILURE IS PART OF THE EMISSIONS SYSTEM AND HAS NO EFFECT ON THE WAY THE TRUCK RUNS EXCEPT IT THROWS THE TRUCK INTO "LIMP" MODE UNTIL IT IS RESOLVED. I WAS ABLE TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY AT FIRST TO RESET THE COMPUTER AND MY TRUCK WAS RUNNING FINE. NOW, HOWEVER, THIS WILL NOT ELIMINATE THE PROBLEM AND I AM RUNNING AROUND IN WHAT I FEEL IS AND UNSAFE VEHICLE DUE TO FACT THAT IT WILL NOT ACCELERATE OR MAINTAIN PROPER SPEED FOR VARIOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. *TR
MY 2008 TOYOTA TUNDRA HAD THE PEDAL ACCELERATE AS I WAS BACKING UP AT MY LOCAL GROCERY STORE. I HAD BEEN COMPLAINING TO MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND THEY KEPT INFORMING ME NOTHING WAS WRONG. IT WASN'T UNTIL THIS HAPPENED THAT THEY SENT A TECH OUT TO INSPECT MY VEHICLE. I AM STILL WAITING TO HEAR FROM THE TECH. I FEEL LIKE I KEEP GETTING THE RUN AROUND FROM TOYOTA. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN RECALL 10V017000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, ACCELERATOR PEDAL) AND REPAIRED ACCORDINGLY PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER FOR ANOTHER REPAIR. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 20,600. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 4,500.
TOOK VEHICLE TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP ON 3-1-10 FOR ACCELERATOR RECALL REPAIR. ON 3-13-10, DURING NORMAL OPERATION, SEVERAL WARNING LIGHTS ON DASHBOARD CAME ON AND SOME WERE FLASHING AS FOLLOWS: VSC OFF-FLASHING, SLIP INDICATOR-STEADY ON, 4HI-FLASHING, 4 LO-FLASHING, ABS-STEADY ON. I STOPPED VEHICLE AND TURNED IGNITION OFF. I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE, ALL WARNING LIGHTS WERE OFF AND STARTED DRIVING AGAIN. FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER THE SAME CONDITION OCCURRED, SAME WARNING LIGHTS. I STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND TURNED OFF THE IGNITION. I CALLED THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THEY HAD NO IDEA WHAT WOULD CAUSE THIS CONDITION AND TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. OVER THE NEXT TWO DAYS THE SAME CONDITION SEEMED TO RECUR EVERY TIME I DROVE THE VEHICLE. ON 3-15-10 THE DEALERSHIP PICKED UP MY VEHICLE FOR REPAIR. THEY RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO ME THE SAME DAY AND TOLD ME TO CONTINUE DRIVING IT AS THEY HAD TO ORDER PARTS (RIGHT REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR) AND WOULD CALL ME WHEN THE PARTS CAME IN TO SCHEDULE REPAIR. OVER THE NEXT 9 DAYS (WAITING FOR PARTS), CONDITION SEEMED YET EVEN WORSE, UNEVEN "JERKY" ACCELERATION, UNEXPECTED ABS ACTIVATION AND/OR BRAKING. INERMITTANTLY THERE WOULD SOMETIMES BE WHAT SOUNDED LIKE A GRINDING AND/OR CLUNKING NOISE THAT SOUNDED LIKE IT COULD BE COMING FROM THE BRAKES AND/OR TRANSMISSION. TO DATE (3-31-10) THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP STILL HAS MY VEHICLE, THEY HAVE REPLACED THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR, WIRING HARNESS TO THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND STATED TODAY THEY WILL BE REPLACING THE WIRING HARNESS FROM THE ABS MODULATOR TO THE WIRING HARNESS TO THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR. I HAVE A 2008 TOYOTA TUNDRA 4WD, LARGE V8 .WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKE I HAVE HAD THREE INSTANCES WERE THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. EACH TIME THIS OCCURRED AT A LOW SPEED[2-6MPH].] FURTHER PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE STOPPED THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS NO WAY BOTH PEDALS WERE PRESSED. I FIND THE ACCELERATOR TO BE VERY TOUCHY. I FIND MYSELF HAVING TO ENGAGE THE AUTO DIFFERENTIAL LOCK TO CONTROL MY ACCELERATION FROM A STOPPED POSITION. IF I DON'T THE ACCELERATOR CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO SPIN THE TIRES. WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP SIGN AT APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH AND DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD AND CRASHED INTO THE PASSENGERS SIDE OF AN ONCOMING VEHICLE. THE POLICE WERE CALLED AND A REPORT WAS FILED AT THE SCENE. NEITHER THE MANUFACTURER NOR THE DEALER WERE CONTACTED. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 5,000.
I HAVE HAD AN ACCELERATOR PROBLEM WITH MY 2008 TOYOTA TUNDRA. LAST SUMMER MY ACCELERATOR STUCK IN FULL THROTTLE POSITION AND ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. I WAS ABLE TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL, THE ENGINE OVER-REVVED, AND THE PEDAL FINALLY RETURNED TO THE NORMAL POSITION. WHEN I CONTACTED THE DEALER I WAS TOLD THAT IT MUST HAVE STUCK ON THE FLOORMAT, BUT THIS WAS NOT POSSIBLE. THE FLOORMAT WAS NO WHERE NEAR THE PEDAL. I COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS HAPPENING AND THE FACT THE PEDAL FELT LIKE IT HAD PULLED ITSELF DOWN MORE THAN WHAT I WAS PUSHING ON IT. I ALSO COMPLAINED OF THE PEDAL BEING HARD TO PUSH AT TAKE OFF AND ALWAYS JOLTING FORWARD AT TAKE OFF DUE TO THE PRESSURE NEEDED TO PUSH THE ACCELERATOR. THE DEALER AGAIN STATED IT HAD TO BE THE FLOORMAT AND ONLY DOCUMENTED THE PROBLEM OF THE PEDAL BEING HARD TO PUSH. WHEN THEY RETURNED THE VEHICLE THEY SAID THE PEDAL WAS FINE AND THAT IT WAS NORMAL TO HAVE TO PUSH HARD ON IT DUE TO THE FACT IT DID NOT OPERATE WITH A CABLE ANYMORE. I CONTACTED TOYOTA SEVERAL TIMES VIA EMAIL SINCE THE LATEST RECALL AND FINALLY RECEIVED A CALL TODAY FROM THEM. THE WOMAN WHO CALLED SAID TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER TO BE REPAIRED. WHEN I ASKED HER IF THE INCIDENT WITH THE STUCK ACCELERATOR WOULD BE INVESTIGATED BY TOYOTA , SHE STATED THAT THERE ONLY ACTION WOULD BE THE RECALL FIX AND TO CONTACT THE DEALER.I FEEL TOYOTA OR AN INDEPENDENT AGENCY SHOULD CHECK THE VEHICLE BEFORE TOYOTA IS ALLOWED TO TOUCH IT, BECAUSE I DON'T FEEL THAT THERE SHIM WILL FIX THIS PROBLEM. I BELIEVE IT IS A PROBLEM OTHER THAN THE PEDAL JUST BEING STUCK. MY VEHICLE ONLY HAD APPROX. 8,000 MILES AT THE TIME. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS 2008 TOYOTA TUNDRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH SHE NOTICED THAT THE RPMS RAPIDLY INCREASED WITHIN SECONDS AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED FROM 60 MPH TO 110 MPH. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON THREE OCCASIONS. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE FAILURE CODE; THEREFORE, STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY THE FLOOR MAT. REPORT 1001152167 WAS FILED WITH THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 41,000.
AS I WAS ABOUT TO COMPLETE PARKING MY 2008 TOYOTA TUNDRA IN A PARKING SPACE AT NORTHAMPTON HIGH SCHOOL, NORTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS THE TRUCK SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AT A HIGH RATE, WENT OVER A CURB AND INTO A CHAIN LINK FENCE DOING CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE TO THE FENCE AND TRUCK. I HAD NO CONTROL OVER THE TRUCK AND HITTING THE BRAKE WAS NOT ENOUGH TO STOP THE HIGH ACCELERATION. I FINALLY MADE THE TRUCK STOP BY SHIFTING INTO NEUTRAL AND SHUTTING OFF THE ENGINE. I WAS VERY LUCKY TO NOT HAVE BEEN HURT. IF THIS HAPPENED A FEW SECONDS EARLIER I WOULD HAVE HIT A GROUP OF STUDENTS WALKING IN THE PARKING LOT.THE STUDENTS WERE IN FRONT OF MY VEHICLE BEFORE I MADE THE RIGHT TURN INTO THE PARKING SPACE. IT WAS VERY SCARY, I AM VERY NERVOUS NOW DRIVING THE TRUCK. MY WIFE WILL NOT DRIVE IT. I CONTACTED TOYOTA IMMEDIATELY. THEY HAVE BEEN VERY DIFFICULT TO DEAL WITH. NOT RETURNING PHONE CALLS AND NOT MEETING DATES FOR WHAT THEY WILL DO. WHEN I FIRST CONTACTED TOYOTA, THE REPRESENTATIVE SAID TO ME "SO WHAT DO YOU WANT TOYOTA TO DO" AFTER I DESCRIBED WHAT HAPPENED AND HOW LUCKY I WAS NOT TO BE HURT OR HURTING STUDENTS IN A HIGH SCHOOL PARKING LOT. THE CONTACT STATED AS HE WAS DRIVING UP THE MOUNTAIN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL GOT STUCK AND THE VEHICLE WENT OVER THE EDGE OF THE MOUNTAIN ALMOST KILLING HIM. THERE IS A POLICE REPORT OF THE ACCIDENT AND THE VEHICLE IS STILL SITTING ON THE SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN BECAUSE THEY UNABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE OFF THE MOUNTAIN. THE CONTACT STATED HE HAS TO GET A CRANE AND A HELICOPTER TO GET THE VEHICLE FROM WHERE IT HAS BEEN STUCK SINCE JULY 2009. THE TOYOTA MANUFACTURE HAD NOT BEEN CALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,000. UPDATED 3/8/10 *CN UPON ASCENDING A HILL IN 4-WHEEL DRIVE, THE CONSUMER FLT THE VEHICLE SPEED UP AS HE REACHED THE TOP OF THE HILL. HE APPLIED THE BRAKE, BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT STOP. SHE WAS FORCED TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL GEAR AND DRIVE ONTO THE EMERGENCY LANE. THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO REV PRIOR TO SHUTTING THE ENGINE OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE FLOOR MAT CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATED, YET SHE DOESN'T AGREE THAT THE FLOOR MATS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE ENGINE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,032 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 11,000.
AS I ARRIVED AT MY HOME AND DROVE UP INTO MY DRIVEWAY I EXPERIENCED AN UNEXPLAINED ACCELERATION ON MY 2008 TOYOTA TUNDRA THAT MADE ME REACT TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES AND CAUSE THE TRUCK TO SLIDE ON AN UNPAVED (DIRT) SURFACE IN MY YARD AND SLIDE INTO THE TRUNK OF A PINE TREE AND DAMAGING THE FRONT BUMPER TO MY TRUCK. I HEARD ON THE NEWS THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE FLOOR MATS ON THIS VEHICLE TO BE REMOVED IF IT DID NOT HAVE CLIPS TO HOLD THE MAT IN PLACE. MY TRUCK DOES HAVE THE CLIPS TO HOLD THE MAT IN PLACE AND PREVENTS THE ACCELERATION PEDAL FROM GETTING LODGED WITH THE MAT. I DO BELIEVE THE ACCELERATION PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY AN UNKNOWN DEFECT AND NOT THE FLOOR MAT. CURRENTLY, THE FLOOR MAT REMAINS IN PLACE ON ITS CLIPS WITHOUT INTERFERENCE TO THE ACCELERATION PEDAL. TODAY, I RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER FROM TOYOTA TO REMOVE THE FLOOR MAT, THEREFORE, I WILL. AGAIN I DON'T BELIEVE THE FLOOR MAT WAS THE PROBLEM. I JUST WANT THIS COMPLAINT DOCUMENTED BECAUSE IT CAUSED AROUND $500 WORTH OF DAMAGED TO MY TRUCK. *TR
WAS RETURNING HOME VIA THE INTERSTATE FROM FL; WE EXITED TO REFUEL. I FILLED THE TRUCK UP AT A SHELL STATION AS WE WERE LEAVING THE PUMPS I STARTED MY TUNDRA PLACED MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE TO PLACE IT INTO GEAR AND SUDDENLY WITHOUT WARNING AFTER PLACING THE VEHICLE INTO DRIVE IT TOOK OFF JUST LIKE I HAD PRESS THE ACCELERATOR IT ALTHOUGH I HAD NOT EVEN PLACED MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL. I IMMEDIATELY DEPRESSED THE BRAKE AS FORCEFULLY AS I COULD THE VEHICLE KEPT ACCELERATING; I PLACED THE VEHICLE INTO NEUTRAL WITH THE ENGINE STILL REVVING LIKE THE GAS PEDAL WAS STILL BEING DEPRESSED. I THEN TURNED OFF THE KEY. THIS WAS THE FIRST AND ONLY TIME I HAD EXPERIENCED ANY SUCH PROBLEM SINCE PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE. THROTTLE CONTROL, 2008 TOYOTA TUNDRA WITH 5.7 L ENGINE. ELECTRONIC "FLY BY WIRE" DESIGN HAS DELAYS IN ADVANCING THROTTLE ON MOTOR. SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ON TUNDRA BLOGS ABOUT THIS AS WELL. COULD BE DANGEROUS WHEN MAKING U TURNS OR IN BLIND AREAS AS THERE IS A HESITATION IN THE ENGINE RESPONSE. I ASKED DEALER ABOUT ADJUSTING AND WAS TOLD THAT UNIT WAS NOT ADJUSTABLE. I HAVE MY VEHICLE IN THE SHOP NOW FOR A REPLACEMENT OF THIS UNIT. *TR
