CALLED TOYOTA 2 YEARS AGO ABOUT RUST ON MY TRUCKS FRAME NEAR THE REAR LEAF SPRING MOUNTING AREA. WAS BLOWN OFF BY TOYOTA CUSTOMER CARE. IN DECEMBER WAS DRIVING AND THE FRAME RAILS LITERALLY SNAPPED AN BOWED, THE ONLY THING THAT SAVED MY LIFE WHILE DRIVING 70MPH, ON THE INTERSTATE 70 BETWEEN HAGERSTOWN MD AND HANCOCK MD, HOME FROM WORK WAS THE BED CONTACTING THE CAB OF THE TRUCK AND MIRACULOUSLY HOLDING HOLDING IT UP AND ALLOWING ME TO GET IT SAFELY OFF THE ROAD AND CALL MY MECHANIC. THE SHEET METAL OF THE TRUCK IS RUST FREE AND IN GOOD CONDITION. THE FRAME IS A TOTAL LOSS. THE TRUCK WAS AT TOYOTA IN 2010 AND 2011 FOR FRAME INSPECTIONS. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THESE TRUCKS AND NOW IM TOLD THAT TOYOTA WONT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. IF THEY WOULD HAVE FIXED IT OR ADDRESSED MY CONCERNS IN 2018 OR EVEN 2019 I WOULDNT HAVE NEARLY CRASHED MY TRUCK. THE IDEA OF A SAFETY CAMPAIGN IS THAT THEY KNOW THERE IS AN ISSUE, THEIR WAS A CLASS ACTION SUIT, THEY HAVE FRAMES AVAILABLE AND THEY NEED TO REPLACE MY FRAME ON MY TRUCK AND MAKE IT SAFE AGAIN. IT IS THE ONLY TRUCK I HAVE I USED IT TO TAKE CARE OF MY DOGS AND MY THE ROADS TO MY HOME ARE VERY STEEP AND A 2WD OR FRONT WHEEL DRIVE WILL NOT MAKE IT IN SNOWY OR RAINY WEATHER. THE DEALER DISCOVERED HOLES IN THE FRAME ON 3/26/19. ACTUALLY IT WAS IN FOR REPAIR OF A GAS TANK STRAP AND I BELIEVE THEY USED A HAMMER ON THE FRAME TO MAKE THE HOLES. THEY WROTE IT UP AS MY TRUCK WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. IT ONLY HAS 81,000 MILES ON IT AND OTHER WISE IN GREAT SHAPE. I HAD IT IN FOR A RECALLED RUSTED SPARE TIRE HOLDER ON 2/11/15 AND THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME THAT THE FRAME LOOKED OK AND IF THE FRAME DEVELOPS HOLES THEY CAN RECOMMEND A GOOD WELDER.

SOMETHING THAT COULD KILL PEOPLE SHOULDN'T EXPIRE.OR TOYOTA SHOULD BUY IT BACK SINCE WHOEVER OWNED IT BEFORE NEVER TOOK CARE OF THE PROBLEM. WHILE DRIVING I HEARD AN UNUSUAL NOISE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. UPON SELF INSPECTION I DISCOVERED THE FUEL TANK STRAP HAD BROKE. I NOTICED ALSO THAT THE FUEL TANK SHIELD LOOKED LIKE SWISS CHEESE FROM CORROSION. I HAD A TIE DOWN STRAP THAT I WAS ABLE TO USE TO STRAP THE SHIELD AND TANK UP WITH. I AM IN THE PROCESS OF LOOKING TO REPAIR IT. I FEEL SINCE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE TOYOTA SHOULD FIX IT FREE OF CHARGE. A FUEL TANK STRAP SHOULD NEVER FAIL LIKE THIS.

MY TOYOTA TACOMA FRAME BROKE DUE TO RUST. THE LEAF SPRING MOUNTING BRACKET BROKE LOOSE FROM THE FRAME AND HE FRAME ITSELF BROKE DUE TO SEVERE RUST. THE TRUCK IS NOW INOPERABLE. THERE AS A RECALL ON SOME TOYOTA FRAMES, BUT APPARENTLY THE RECALL ONLY APPLIES TO "COLD" STATES, NOT HAWAII. MANY OF MY FRIENDS HAVE TACOMAS AND THEY ALL HAVE RUST ISSUES. I ALSO HAVE A 2010 TACOMA WITH LESS THAN 6000 MILES AND I HAVE ALREADY NOTICED THAT THE FRAME IS RUSTING BY THE LEAF SPRING MOUNTS.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE INSPECTION (IN THIS CASE) WAS INSUFFICIENT TO DETERMINE AN ADEQUATE SERVICE LIFE ON THE FRAME. THE INSPECTIONS SHOULD BE PERFORMED AGAIN AND THE PROCEDURE MODIFIED TO REFLECT THE GOAL OF THE INSPECTION, WHICH THIS INSPECTION DID NOT.

DUE TO FRAME ROT, INSTEAD OF BEING FIXABLE, IT WAS DEEMED TOTAL LOSS AND WILL NOW COST SIGNIFICANT FINANCIAL BURDEN. WE TOOK IT FOR THE MA STATE INSPECTION AND IT FAILED. THEY SAID IT NEEDED A NEW MUFFLER. THE TOYOTA TACOMA TRUCKS HAD A CUSTOMER SERVICE ADVISORY FOR THE FRAME RUSTING ON THE VEHICLE. THE CSA ADVISED THE CURRENT OWNER THAT THE FRAME COULD RUST AND NEEDED TO BE INSPECTED. IF THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED TOYOTA WOULD EITHER SPRAY THE FRAME OR REPLACE IT IF RUSTED. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FROM AN AUTHORIZED TOYOTA DEALER I WAS ASSURED THE FRAME HAD BEEN CHECKED AND TAKEN CARE OF. A WEEK LATER I HAD TO INSTALL A BLOWN OUT MUFFLER AND COME TO FIND OUT THE FRAME WAS NOT LOOKED AT AND THE FIX WAS NOT COMPLETED. BEING THE NEW OWNER OF THE TRUCK I WAS TOLD THAT THE CSA HAD EXPIRED DECEMBER 2011 AND THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE. I CAN?T BELIEVE THAT A FRAME RUSTING COMPLETELY OUT IS NORMAL IN JUST 10 YEARS. THE SERVICE MANAGER GAVE ME THE VIN NUMBER AND CONFIRMED THAT THE TRUCK WAS ON THE RECALL LIST. SHE GAVE ME THE PHONE NUMBER TO CALL TOYOTA CORPORATE. WHEN I SPOKE WITH THEM, THEY TOLD ME THAT THE RECALL HAD EXPIRED IN 2011, AND THEY ASSIGNED A CASE MANAGER, [XXX], WHO WOULD BE THE ONLY ONE THAT COULD OVER-RULE THE EXPIRED RECALL. THE MECHANIC STRAPPED THE FUEL TANK BACK ONTO THE VEHICLE AS A TEMPORARY REMEDY. THERE WAS A VOLUNTARY RECALL ISSUED BY THE MANUFACTURER RELATED TO THE FRAME, HOWEVER THE RECALL HAD EXPIRED. THERE WAS ALSO A RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 12V542000 (TIRES) BUT THE DEALER REFUSED TO HONOR THE RECALL BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER THE MANUFACTURER'S VOLUNTARY RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 104,000. THE CONSUMER STATED SHE WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THE RECALL, INVOLVING FRAME RUST. MILES. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER. I HAVE SPOKEN TO TOYOTA DEALERS, TOYOTA CUSTOMER REPS. AND ALL SAY NOTHING CAN BE DONE AT THIS STAGE OF VEHICLE. HOW DO I NOW KNOWINGLY SELL THIS TRUCK TO ANYONE? YESTERDAY, I WENT TO MY MECHANIC FOR AN INSPECTION ON MY 2004 TOYOTA TACOMA. HE SAID IT WOULDN'T PASS BECAUSE HOLES WERE EVERYWHERE ALONG THE FRAME. I TOOK IT TO TOYOTA. THEY TOOK PICTURES AND DOCUMENTED THE FACT THAT MY CAR WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THEY SAID IT WASN'T THEIR PROBLEM, AND THAT I HAD BEEN GIVEN FOUR YEARS TO FIX IT. WHEN I LOOKED UP MY VIN NUMBER ONLINE, IT MENTIONED ONLY THE RECALL FOR THE SPARE TIRE (WHICH I HAD ALREADY TAKEN OFF THREE YEARS AGO). I CALLED TOYOTA CENTRAL, AND THEY SAID IT WASN'T THEIR PROBLEM. APPARENTLY, I HAD RECEIVED A FIRST CLASS LETTER BETWEEN NOVEMBER OF 2010 AND DECEMBER OF 2011 WHICH STATED THAT I NEEDED TO HAVE MY FRAME SPRAYED. THEY SAID THAT THE CUTOFF FOR THIS "REMEDY" WAS DECEMBER, 2012. WHEN I ASKED IF, HAD I HAD THE FRAME SPRAYED SIX MONTHS AGO, WOULD THIS ROT HAVE MIRACULOUSLY NOT APPEARED, THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T KNOW. THEY APOLOGIZED FOR THE FACT THAT IT WAS NOT THEIR PROBLEM, AND THAT WAS THAT. I MAY HAVE RECEIVED A LETTER...I AM NOT SURE, AND CANNOT HONESTLY CLAIM I DIDN'T RECEIVE IT. WHAT I DO KNOW THAT I DO, THOUGH, IS REGULARLY CHECK ON LINE FOR RECALLS SO THAT I CAN MAKE SURE THAT I AM NOT MISSING ANYTHING. THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THIS PARTICULAR RECALL WAS VOLUNTARY, AND THEREFORE IT WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN POSTED IN NORMAL CHANNELS. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, THE DEALER SPECIFICALLY SAID THAT SOMEONE HAD COME IN THE PREVIOUS WEEK WITH THE SAME ISSUE AND IT WAS "TOO BAD". HE ALSO SAID THAT TOYOTA WOULD PROBABLY BE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THIS BECAUSE SO MANY PEOPLE WERE HAVING SUCH MAJOR SAFETY ISSUES. HE SAID THAT IF I WANTED TO HOLD ON TO THE TRUCK...MAYBE SOMETHING WOULD HAPPEN IN A YEAR. VEHICLE FRAME IS RUSTING, ROTTING, AND CRUMBLING FROM BENEATH THE TRUCK. I WAS UNAWARE OF THE CONDITION WHEN I WAS TOLD BY A MECHANIC DURING A PENNSYLVANIA STATE VEHICLE INSPECTION THAT THE FRAME WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL AND SPLIT APART AS I AM DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND THEY TOLD ME THAT I MISSED THE RECALL WINDOW WHICH WOULD HAVE EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE FRAME. 3 YEARS AGO TOYOTA SENT US A NOTICED AND CALLED .. ASKING US TO HAVE OUR FRAME INSPECTED DUE TO FRAME FAILURES AND RUST. WE IMMEDIATELY CALLED OUR DEALER FOR A FRAME INSPECTION AND WAS TOLD THE FRAME HAD FAILED AND THAT WE SHOULDN'T DRIVE THE VEHICLE. FOR SAFETY REASONS. I CALLED THE TOYOTA HOTLINE AND RECEIVED A CLAIM NUMBER WAS TOLD WE WERE ELIGIBLE FOR THE A FRAME REPLACEMENT BECAUSE WE HAD RECEIVED THE UNDERCOATING . THEY SET UP AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE TOYOTA REP TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE TODAY MARCH 8TH.. THE REP NEVER SHOWED UP. WE WEREN'T PROVIDED WITH A RENTAL VEHICLE AND THUS HAVING TROUBLE MEETING OUR WORK COMMITMENTS.. 2004 TOYOTA TACOMA WITH 147,000 MILES FAILED STATE INSPECTION AND DEEMED UNSAFE TO DRIVE DUE TO RUSTED AND PERFORATED FRAME. THIS FRAME WAS ONE BOUGHT BY TOYOTA FROM THE DANA CORPORATION. TOYOTA WON A LAWSUIT OVER THIS POOR QUALITY FRAME, AND HAS BOUGHT BACK ALL '95-'99 TOYOTAS WITH THIS FRAME, AND REPLACED FRAMES ON '00-'04 TRUCKS. TOYOTA IS STATING THAT OUR TACOMA DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR THE EXTENDED WARRANTY PUT OUT ON THESE AFFECTED FRAMES, AS IT WAS NOT UNDERCOATED AS PART OF THEIR PREVENTION PROGRAM. HOWEVER, IT HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED THAT THE UNDERCOATING WAS INEFFECTIVE, AND THE FRAMES CONTINUED TO RUST OUT AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WE FEEL STRONGLY THAT TOYOTA SHOULD OFFER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY TO ALL TRUCKS AFFECTED BY THIS FAULTY CONSTRUCTED FRAME. TOYOTA IS REPORTING THAT THEY CAN DO NOTHING FURTHER TO HELP IN THIS CASE, DESPITE THAT IT IS AN OTHERWISE WELL EQUIPPED AND STRONGLY RUNNING TRUCK, WHICH HAS HAD ONGOING AND CONSISTENT ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. THERE WAS NOTHING THAT LED UP TO THIS EVENT. I WAS JUST DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND THE BRACKET THAT ATTACHES THE FRONT AXEL OF MY TRUCK TO THE FRAME JUST SNAPPED OFF. THIS IS A RELATIVELY NEW VEHICLE AND HAS NOT SEEN TOO ROUGH A ROAD! IT IS QUITE PAMPERED AND WELL MAINTAINED. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A DEFECT DUE TO THE MANY COMPLAINTS OF THE EXACT THING HAPPENING. I SEARCHED ONLINE AND DISCOVERED THAT I AM NOT ALONE IN THIS EVENT AS IT SEEMS TO BE IT OCCURS QUITE FREQUENTLY TO (FROM WHAT I HEAR), 2 WHEEL DRIVE TOYOTA TACOMA'S, THAT HAVE INSTALLED A LIFT. I CANNOT IMAGINE HOW MANY LIVES HAVE BEEN LOST LET ALONE HOW MANY ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES THIS HAS RESULTED IN AS YOU LOOSE COMPLETE CONTROL OF WHERE THE VEHICLE GOES. AND IN SOME INSTANCES IT ALSO SEVERS THE BRAKE LINE LEAVING THE VEHICLE OUT OF CONTROL WITH NO BRAKES. I IMAGINE THAT MOST CRASHES ARE NOT BLAMED ON THIS DUE TO THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCING A LARGE ACCIDENT WITH IMPACT TO THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. AND THE BRACKET THAT HOLDS THE FRONT AXEL TO FRAME IS MANGLED. THEREFORE, LEAVING ONE TO BELIEVE THAT THE ACCIDENT CAUSED THE DAMAGE. WHEN THE FACT IS THAT THE DAMAGE OR DEFECT IF YOU WILL IS WHAT CAUSED THE ACCIDENT WHICH IN TURN DAMAGED THE VEHICLE, DRIVER, PASSENGER(S). NOT TO MENTION THAT ACCIDENTS OFTEN INVOLVE OTHER VEHICLES AS WELL. IT SEEMS TO BE MORE PREVALENT ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE SO THAT USUALLY MEANS THAT THE VEHICLE TRAVELS INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC! IE: HEAD ON COLLISIONS! HOW MANY SURVIVE A HEADON COLLISION IN A LIGHT DUTY TRUCK? FEW I WOULD IMAGINE. WELL IT ALMOST BECAME A REALITY FOR ME AS WELL AS MY PASSENGER. WE WERE JUST LUCKY THAT WE LIVE WHERE WE DO AND THERE WAS LIGHT TRAFFIC COMING THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. I HAVE HEARD THAT THIS HAPPENED TO SEVERAL OTHERS IN THE AREA AND TOYOTA TELLS THEM TO GO TO "ROCKY'S OFFROAD", TO GET IT FIXED. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT HAD A REPAIR FOR A RECALL ON THE FRAME PERFORMED (RECALL INFORMATION NOT AVAILABLE IN NHTSA DATABASE). THE DEALER UNDERCOATED THE FRAME WHICH TURNED INTO AN OIL BASE THAT DRIPPED IN THE CONTACT'S GARAGE AND DAMAGED IT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHO ADVISED HER TO CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AGAIN. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 81,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 90,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF A MANUFACTURER'S RECALL PERTAINING TO POSSIBLE FRAME CORROSION. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION AND TO HAVE RUST INHIBITOR SPRAYED ON THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER DID NOT LOCATE A CORROSION FAILURE IN THE FRAME AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SERVICED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A DIFFERENT DEALER FOR REPAIRS. THE SECOND DEALER DISCOVERED HOLES AND CORROSION ON THE FRAME. THE DEALER DEEMED THE VEHICLE AS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND ADVISED THAT THE FRAME WOULD NEED REPLACING. THE DEALER WOULD HAVE TO REBUILD THE ENTIRE TRUCK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE NO LONGER WANTED OWNERSHIP OF THE TRUCK AND BELIEVED THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD TAKE THE LIABILITY FOR THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 47,500.

WE OWN A 2004 TOYOTA TACOMA. AFTER RECEIVING A LETTER FROM TOYOTA ABOUT FRAME RUST, WE TOOK OUR VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR THE REQUESTED INSPECTION. THE DEALER TOLD US THAT THE FRAME HAS SOFT SPOTS AND THAT TOYOTA RECOMMENDED REPLACING THE FRAME. WE ARE SERIOUSLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THIS VEHICLE GIVEN THE FACT THAT THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN COMPROMISED. HOWEVER, WE QUESTION THIS KIND OF INVASIVE REPAIR. WE WANT TOYOTA TO BUY THE TRUCK BACK GIVEN THE NATURE OF THIS SAFETY DEFECT. TOYOTA HAS A DEFINED HISTORY OF DEFECTIVE FRAMES IN THE TACOMA: THEY BOUGHT BACK MANY 1995-2000 TACOMAS FOR THE SAME REASON. SINCE THE 2001-2004 TACOMAS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME DEFECT -- A VERY SERIOUS ONE -- TOYOTA NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND PROPERLY COMPENSATE OWNERS LIKE US BY BUYING THEM BACK. WE REQUEST THAT THE NHTSA DO WHAT IS NECESSARY TO REQUIRE TOYOTA TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY IN THIS MATTER BY RECALLING ALL AFFECTED TACOMAS SO THESE VEHICLES CAN BE TAKEN OFF THE ROAD BEFORE INJURY AND DEATH RESULTS. HEAVY SNOWS IN COLORADO DURING DECEMBER,2006 FORCED MANY VEHICLE DRIVERS TO DRIVE IN UNUSUALLY HEAVY DRIFTS. THE REAR SKID PLATE ON NEWER TOYOTA TACOMA 4X4 TRUCKS CAN BEND AND PEEL AWAY FROM THE FRAME WHEN THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN IN DEEP DRIFTS IN REVERSE. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS THEN DRIVEN FORWARD, THE BENT SKID PLATE ACTS AS A BAFFLE AGAINST SNOW, CAUSING THE TRUCK TO SWERVE AND BECOME DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER AND CONTROL. THE SKID PLATE IS POORLY DESIGNED FOR DEEP SNOW DRIVING. IT IS HELD ONTO THE FRAME BY TWO SMALL BOLTS IN THE FRONT AND BY NOTHING IN THE REAR. THE OWNER OF THE VEHICLE REMOVED THE BENT SKID PLATE AND HAS INFORMED TOYOTA. THE PART IS AVAILABLE. *JB
