TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1998 THROUGH 2010 SIENNA PASSENGER VEHICLES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN AUGUST 7, 1997 AND JANUARY 4, 2010, CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN OR ORIGINALLY SOLD IN CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WASHINGTON DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA, AND WISCONSIN. THE SUBJECT VEHICLES ARE EQUIPPED WITH THE SPARE TIRE STOWED UNDER THE VEHICLE. IF THE VEHICLE IS OPERATED IN THE COLD CLIMATE REGIONS OF THE UNITED STATES WHERE ROAD SALT IS FREQUENTLY USED, WATER SPLASHED BACKWARDS WITH HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT CAN REACH THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER AND CORRODE THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER ASSEMBLY CABLE.

Fix: TOYOTA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS WITH AN INTERIM LETTER INITIALLY INSTRUCTING THEM TO BRING THEIR VEHICLE TO AUTHORIZED DEALERS TO INSPECT FOR CORROSION. The pulley wire that opens both the left and right sliding doors has snapped on both sides, leaving at least one door completely sealed shut. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER VANDERSTEIN TOYOTA IN ROCHESTER NEW YORK FOR A DIAGNOSIS. THE SLIDING DOOR CABLE FRACTURED AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR DOOR EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE LAST YEAR, BUT IN THE RECENT FAILURE, THE LATCH WAS FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED LAST YEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED FOR THE RECENT FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE BUT THE VIN DID NOT QUALIFY FOR THE RECALL. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

TOYOTA SAID IT WOULD COST ABOUT $2500.00 TO FIX. WE USED THE OTHER BACK SIDE DOOR UNTIL THE WIRE ON IT BROKE ALSO. IT WAS ABLE TO BE USED MANUALLY. MY BROTHER-IN-LAW WAS ABLE TO GET THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR UNSTUCK SO WE CAN USE IT MANUALLY ALSO. CAN NOT AFFORD TO PAY $5000.00 TO FIX POWER DOORS.

IT WAS PURCHASED AS CERTIFIED PREOWNED BUT WE WERE TOLD THE DOORS ARE NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY FOR THIS YEAR. I'M READING ONLINE OF MANY OTHER OWNERS HAVING THE EXACT SAME ISSUE.

AT 102000 MILES LEFT POWER SLIDING DOOR CABLE BROKE DURING NORMAL OPERATION. IN ITS BROKEN STATE DOOR ONLY OPENS MANUALLY ABOUT 7 ITO 8 INCHES AND ONLY WITH SOME FORCE. THE CABLE MAY HAVE BROKEN ON THE PREVIOUS CYCLING OF THE DOOR. THAT IS NOT KNOWN. THE PROBLEM WAS DISCOVERED WHEN UPON STOPPING TO EXIT THE DOOR. NOT KNOWING WHY THE DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN, I PROCEEDED TO OPEN IT MANUALLY. DOOR SLID OPEN WITH A BIT OF FORCE REQUIRED THEN STOPPED. NO ADDITIONAL AMOUNT OF FORCE WOULD ALLOW IT TO OPEN FURTHER. THE SAFETY CONCERN IS: HAD PASSENGERS NEEDED TO ESCAPE RAPIDLY, AND NOT KNOWN THE CABLE WAS BROKEN, THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN BARRED FROM EXITING RAPIDLY FROM THE TWO ROWS OF SEATS.

I WAS TOLD THAT THE CABLE ON THE DOOR IS WHAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BUT YOU CAN'T PURCHASE THE CABLE ITSELF. THE DEALER EXPLAINED THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PURCHASE THE MOTOR BECAUSE IT'S A "PACKAGE" DEAL BUT IN REALITY I DIDN'T NEED THE MOTOR, THE MOTOR ON THE VAN WAS IN GOOD CONDITION. THEY WANTED TOO MUCH MONEY SO I HAD TO CHOOSE BETWEEN PURCHASING SOMETHING I REALLY DIDNT NEED TO HAVING TO MANUALLY OPEN/CLOSE MY DOOR.

THEY SAID THAT THEY HADN'T YET RECEIVED ENOUGH COMPLAINTS ON MODEL YEARS 2008-2010 TO WARRANT AN EXTENSION FOR THESE YEARS. WHEN ASKED IF THE 2010 MODEL HAD BEEN CHANGED IN ANY WAY FOR THIS EXISTING PROBLEM THEY SAID NO. IF ENOUGH PEOPLE COMPLAIN TOYOTA WILL CONSIDER EXTENDING THEIR EXISTING WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT FROM 2004-2007 TO 2004-2010. WE CAN USE THE DOORS IN MANUAL MODE BUT ONLY FROM THE OUTSIDE. THE GREATER CONCERN IS THE SAFETY ISSUE WITH MY KIDS NOT BEING ABLE TO OPEN THE DOORS FROM THE INSIDE. THE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES DON'T FUNCTION AT ALL - NOT EVEN IN MANUAL MODE. THERE SHOULD BE A REDUNDANT FUNCTION WHERE IF THE AUTOMATIC DOORS FAIL KIDS DON'T BECOME TRAPPED. I GOT A FLAT TIRE ON I-95, USED THE SPARE WHEEL, NOW I AM UNABLE TO GET THE SPARE WHEEL BACK UP UNDER MY TOYOTA SIENNA. THE TOYOTA SAFETY INTERIM NOTICE RECALL #E1S STATES "EXCESSIVE CORROSION MAY OCCUR ON THE END OF THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER CABLE," WHICH IS THE CASE FOR MY SIENNA. I HAVE CALLED THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE CENTER AT 1-888-270-9371 AND THEY KEEP ON SAYING THAT TOYOTA HAS NOT YET COME UP WITH A REMEDY FOR THIS SITUATION. I TOOK MY SIENNA TO THE TOYOTA LUSTINE DEALERSHIP IN WOODBRIDGE, VA, BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. MY SIENNA IS A VANPOOL FOR SIX PEOPLE COMMUTING BETWEEN WOODBRIDGE, VIRGINIA AND WASHINGTON, DC EVERY DAY. I NEED TO HAVE MY SPARE WHEEL PROPERLY IN PLACE. IT HAS BEEN OVER A HALF A YEAR. THE DRIVER SIDE REAR AUTOMATIC SLIDING DOOR WAS BECOMING DIFFICULT TO OPEN. HAD TO PULL AND HOLD OUT THE OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE TO GET THE DOOR TO START OPENING. IT WAS DIFFICULT FOR A CHILD TO DO. HAD THE LOCK ASSEMBLY REPLACED FEB 2014 UNDER WARRANTY DUE TO A LETTER I RECEIVED PRIOR FROM TOYOTA SAYING THEY WERE HAVING DIFFICULT WITH THE LOCK ASSEMBLY AND WOULD REPLACE IF IT OCCURRED. THIS RESOLVED THE DOOR OPENING, HOWEVER IN JUNE THE DOOR CABLE BROKE CAUSING THE DOOR TO JAM. I HAD TO CUT THE CABLE UNDER THE REAR WINDOW TO ENABLE TO DOOR TO OPEN AND CLOSE MANUALLY. ALSO THE DOOR HINGE WAS WORN AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. DEALER SAID NEITHER ARE UNDER WARRANTY. I HAD THE HINGE REPLACED AT $280 SO THE DOOR SLIDES SMOOTHLY AND BECAUSE I WAS AFRAID IT MIGHT BREAK CAUSING THE DOOR TO FALL OFF. THE CABLE AND MOTOR ASSEMBLY (MOTOR STILL RUNS) WILL COST $1,800. THIS IS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING FOR A VEHICLE LESS THAN 5 YEARS OLD AND ~100K MILES. I BELIEVE TOYOTA HAD A RECALL ON THIS CABLE ASSEMBLY FOR MODEL YEARS 2004-2007. THEY SHOULD EXTEND THAT RECALL THROUGH 2010 TO COVER ALL THE 2ND GENERATION SIENNAS. *TR
