TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT AND REAR PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL RIMS WERE CRACKED, WHICH CAUSED AIR TO LEAK FROM THE TIRES. THE CONTACT CALLED TAYLOR TOYOTA OF HERMITAGE AT 724-347-7702 (LOCATED AT 2757 E STATE ST, HERMITAGE, PA 16148) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE RIMS NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND DENIED ANY SUCH FAILURE. THE FAILURE WAS NOT REMEDIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 24,000.
THEY DID A RECALL ON MY VEHICLE AND IT WAS ABOUT A BOLT RUSTING ON THE BACKEND NEAR THE REAR TIRE SO THE FIX WAS TO PROTECT A BOLT. THEY PUT SOME BAR ON THE BACK SIDE NEAR THE REAR TIRE THAT MADE IT WHERE I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET MY BACK END OF THE CAR ALIGNED SINCE. CAUSING MY TIRES TO KEEP GETTING BUBBLES IN THEM. THIS HAPPENS TO EVERY SET I GET AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THEY CANNOT FIX THE REAR ALIGNMENT BECAUSE OF THE RECALL. THIS FIGHT HAS GONE ON FOR YEARS. ALL TOYOTA SAYS IS THEY WERE ONLY REQUIRED TO FIX THE RECALL ....IN OTHER WORDS THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE ALIGNMENT ISSUE. PLEASE HELP ME. I HAVE THE REPORT FROM THE LAST ATTEMPTED ALIGNMENT SHOWING HOW OUT OF ALIGNMENT THE VEHICLE IS.
AT SOME TIME BETWEEN 2:00 PM AND 2:30 PM ON NOVEMBER 5, 2016 MY WIFE AND I WERE DRIVING MY 2010 RAV4 SOUTH ON COUNTY ROUTE 561 IN VOORHEES TOWNSHIP, NJ ON THE INSIDE LANE OF THIS 4 LANE HIGHWAY WHEN I LIGHTLY PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL TO SLOW FROM 45 MPH TO THE LOWERED SPEED LIMIT. SUDDENLY, AND WITHOUT WARNING, THE LEFT REAR WHEEL LOCKED UP TIGHT, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SWERVE ABRUPTLY INTO AND ACROSS TWO LANES OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC. I WAS ABLE TO REGAIN SOME CONTROL BY RELEASING THE BRAKE AND STEERING TO THE RIGHT TO AVOID GOING OVER THE CURB, BUT THE REAR END OF THE CAR SLID TO THE LEFT AND HIT THE CURB ..UPDATED 04/11/17 *BF UPDATED 04/24/2017*JS *CN
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ALL FOUR RIMS OF THE VEHICLE WERE RUSTED AND CAUSED THE TIRE PRESSURE TO BECOME LOW. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE RIMS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
I BOUGHT THE CAR 8/31/2010. THE CAR ALWAYS JUMPED FOR NO REASON. HENDERICKSON TOYOTA SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG. I SAW 2010 RAV4 WAS INVOLVED IN A LAWSUIT THAT TOYOTA CORPORATION LOST IN 2013. I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED. THE CAR WAS RPAIRED FOR A FLOOR MAT PROBLEM, BUT NOT THE MOTOR JUMP. I SOLD THE CAR BECAUSE THE CAR WAS IN 2015 BECAUSE IT HAD A SECOND MAJOR PROBLEM WITH POOR CONTROL OF BACKEND.
I WENT TO ROTATE THE TIRES FOR THE FIRST TIME ON MY 2010 RAV4 2.5 V6. I HAD NEVER HAD THE TIRES OFF BEFORE. THE ONLY TIME THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN OFF WAS WHEN I WENT BACK TO THE DEALER AFTER HAVING THE CAR FOR APPROXIMATELY 6 MONTHS TO HAVE THE FRONT 2 WHEELS RE-BALANCED BECAUSE OF A SLIGHT SHAKING IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THIS FIXED THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER WHEN I WENT TO ROTATE 4 TIRES, 2 OF THE FRONT LUG BOLTS BROKE. WHEN I INSPECTED THEM I COULD SEE THAT A COUPLE MORE LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE ALSO STRETCHED BETWEEN THE THREADS, MOST LIKELY FROM OVER TORQUING. KNOWING THAT THEY WOULD LIKELY BREAK ALSO, I DECIDED TO REINSTALL THE WHEEL ANYWAY AND SEE AT WHAT TORQUE POINT THE OTHERS WOULD BREAK. THE ONES THAT ALREADY WERE STRETCHED BROKE AT 85 FT LBS. 2 OTHERS THAT WERE NOT VISIBLY STRETCHED BROKE AT 90 & 95 FT.LBS. I'VE WORKED ON AND RESTORED CARS FOR 50 YEARS. I KNOW WHAT WHEEL STUDS WILL TAKE BEFORE THEY BREAK. I'VE NEVER HAD 13 MM OR 1/2 INCH WHEEL BOLTS BREAK AT THIS LOW TORQUE. THE REPLACEMENT BOLTS, WAGNER BRAKE BRAND, ARE MARKED AS A METRIC 10.9 STRENGTH BOLT, EQUIVALENT TO A SAE GRADE 8. THESE ARE RATED TO TAKE +/- 100 FT. LBS. TORQUE. THE STOCK TOYOTA BOLTS HAVE NO MARKINGS AND THEY RECOMMEND 80 FT LBS AS THE AMOUNT TO TIGHTEN TO. I BELIEVE 8.8 ARE STOCK STRENGTH BOLTS WHICH WOULD TAKE 80 FT LBS, BUT THESE ARE INFERIOR IF THEY ARE 8.8 AND LEAVE NO MARGIN FOR ERROR (OVER 80 FT LBS). SOMEONE USING AN IMPACT WRENCH COULD EASILY OVER STRESS THESE INFERIOR BOLTS. I HAVE SAVED ALL 20 BOLTS I REPLACED. I BELIEVE IF THEY WERE INDEPENDENTLY TESTED IT WOULD SHOW THAT THEY ARE UNSAFE FOR THESE CARS. FROM WHAT I HAVE FOUND ON THE INTERNET, THIS SEEMS TO BE WIDE SPREAD ON MOST 2009 AND 2010 RAV4 CARS. IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO SEE WHAT THESE 2 YEARS BOLTS TEST AT COMPARED TO THE 2012 AND LATER MODELS. IT MIGHT SHOW THAT TOYOTA KNEW THEY HAD A BREAKAGE PROBLEM.
ONE WHEEL STUD ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WAS BROKEN. APPARENTLY IT WAS MADE OF POOR STEEL MATERIAL. I CHECKED INTERNET AND FOUND THIS PROBLEM WAS ALSO REPORTED BY MANY OTHERS. TO OUR DISAPPOINTMENT, SO THE MANUFACTURE AND DEALERS ARE STILL NOT ACCEPTING THE CAUSATION. I AM THINKING BOYCOTT TOYOTA SINCE THEY ARE USING CHEAP POOR PARTS MADE IN CHINA. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER ROTATING THE TIRES, SHE NOTICED THAT ALL FOUR OF RIMS WERE CRACKED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000. UPDATED 07/02/12 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED SHE HAD A TIRE THAT WOULDN'T AIR. WHEN SHE PURCHASED A USED TIRE, SHE DISCOVERED THAT TIRE WOULDN'T HOLD AIR EITHER. THE TIRE STORE INFORMED THE CONSUMER THERE WAS A CRACK IN THE RIM. WHEN THE TECHNICIAN LOOKED AT ALL THE RIMS, HE DISCOVERED THREE OUT OF FOUR RIMS WERE CRACKED. UPDATED 07/05/12.*JB
THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE WHEEL STUDS THAT APPEARS TO BE QUITE COMMON ON RAV4'S OF SEVERAL YEARS. THE WHEEL STUDS BREAK QUITE OFTEN AND THE TOYOTA AND THE TOYOTA DEALERS BLAME IT ON THE TORQUE OF THE LUG NUTS. THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT THE CASE SINCE I'VE HAD TWO BREAK OFF SINCE I PURCHASED THE CARD NEW IN SEPTEMBER, 2009. THE FIRST BROKE OFF AT APPROXIMATELY 8,000 MILE AND SECOND BROKE OF AT 24,000 MILES WHILE I WAS DRIVE ON AN INTERSTATE. THE 24,000 MILE ONE BROKE AND THE IT WAS 41/2 MONTHS AFTER THE TIRES WERE ROTATED. IN SEARCHING THE INTERNET, THERE ARE MULTIPLE PROBLEMS AND I BELIEVE THIS IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING IN THE MANUFACTURE OF THESE STUD WHERE THEY ARE USING INFERIOR PRODUCT TO MANUFACTURE THEM. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION ESPECIALLY IF THE CAR OWNER IS NOT FREQUENTLY CHECKING THEIR WHEELS TO SEE IF THIS IS HAPPENING. *TR
SHORTLY AFTER DEALER MAINTENANCE, THREE LUG BOLTS BROKE OFF WHILE TORQUING THE LUG NUTS TO 80 FOOT POUNDS. THE LUG BOLTS APPEAR TO MADE FROM A LOW GRADE OF STEEL. THE DEALER WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO REPLACE BROKEN BOLTS, BUT REFUSED TO REPLACE ALL THE LUG BOLTS. I MAINTAIN THAT ALL MY LUG BOLTS COULD BE DAMAGED TO THE POINT OF NEAR FAILURE AND THAT TOYOTA SHOULD BE USING A HIGHER GRADE STEEL IN THESE BOLTS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA RAV 4. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND THE CONTACT WAS ATTEMPTING TO REPLACE THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE. WHILE UNSCREWING THE LUGS, FOUR OF THE FIVE STUDS ON THE WHEEL FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE STUDS COULD BE REPAIRED BUT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 16,300.
