ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING:SWITCHES/KNOBS/BUTTONS
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Prius Prime, 2023-2026 Prius, and 2025-2026 Prius Plug-in Hybrid vehicles. Water may enter the rear door switch and cause a short circuit, allowing an unlocked rear door to open unexpectedly.
Fix: Dealers will modify the rear door switch circuits, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed March 26, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 26TB03 and 26TA03. This recall expands and replaces NHTSA recall number 24V274. Vehicles repaired under the previous recall will need to have the new remedy performed.

Your 2026 Prius was delivered to you with an active federal safety recall that hadn't been fixed yet. The recall involves a rear door electrical switch that can allow water to seep in, short-circuit the electrics, and cause the rear door to open unexpectedly while you're driving — which could put passengers at risk of falling out or injury. Although this safety issue was announced on January 28, 2026 and was already in Toyota's and NHTSA's recall systems when you received the car, no fix was available at delivery. The repair will involve inspecting and replacing the affected rear door electrical switch to prevent water intrusion and unwanted door opening.

Your car's outside rear view mirrors won't adjust smoothly—they freeze up, move in fits and starts, or jerk when you try to position them. Your Toyota dealer confirmed this is a widespread issue affecting all 2026 Priuses and that Toyota is aware of it, but neither Toyota nor the dealership currently has a fix available. Getting your mirrors to adjust properly may require replacement mirror motors or electrical components once a solution is developed.
