NHTSA Campaign: 17V658000
Component: HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM: INVERTER
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2016 Prius vehicles. A capacitor within the hybrid system may not have been properly bolted to the inverter housing.
Risk: If the capacitor was not properly secured, vibrations from driving the vehicle may damage the capacitor, shutting down the hybrid system, causing a loss of motive power and increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the inverter, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by early December 2017. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is H0U.
NHTSA Campaign: 18V579000
Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Toyota Prius vehicles. A portion of the engine wire harness connected to the hybrid Power Control Unit (PCU), could contact the cover at this connection and wear, causing an electrical short circuit.
Risk: An electrical short can increase the risk of a fire.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine wire harness assembly and replace it if damage is found. A protective sleeve or protective tape will be included to prevent any future damage. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began October 30, 2018. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is J0T.

Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2016 Toyota Prius vehicles manufactured November 30, 2015, to June 14, 2016. An air bag inflator manufacturing error may result in the inadvertent partial inflation of the front passenger air bag.
Risk: A front passenger air bag that unintentionally inflates can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag assembly, free of charge. The recall began November 10, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is G0W.
NHTSA Campaign: 18V085000
Component: AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2016 Toyota Prius and Lexus RX 350, RX 350 F Sport, RX 450h F Sport and RX 450h vehicles and 2015-2016 Lexus NX 200T, NX Turbo and NX 300h vehicles. The air bag pressure sensors and/or the acceleration sensors may fail causing the side/curtain shield air bags and/or the front air bags to not deploy in the event of a crash.
Risk: If the air bags fail to deploy in a crash, it can increase the risk of injury.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the sensors as necessary based on their serial numbers, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin March 12, 2018. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are JLA, J0F.
NHTSA Campaign: 16V741000
Component: PARKING BRAKE
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Prius vehicles manufactured August 6, 2015, to October 3, 2016. The affected vehicles are equipped with a foot-operated parking brake system that has a parking brake cable that may disengage.
Risk: If the parking brake cable disengages from the mechanism and the transmission is left in a gear other than 'Park' while the ignition is on and the driver leaves the vehicle, the vehicle may roll unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will install a clip at the parking brake cable end to prevent the cable from disengaging, free of charge. The recall began November 10, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is G01.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 176)
Engine →3 issues
Your water pump failed suddenly without warning while you were driving on the highway at 55 mph, causing your engine to stall and stop responding to acceleration. The only warning you received was a generic "Maintenance Required" message the week before, which is the same message that appears for routine oil changes—it didn't alert you to a serious problem. The water pump failure caused irreparable damage that requires a complete engine replacement. The fix will involve replacing the failed water pump and potentially the entire engine, depending on the extent of damage.

Your engine's temperature warning light came on and stayed on while driving. Your mechanic found that combustion gases are leaking into your cooling system, which indicates a failed head gasket—a seal between the engine block and cylinder head that's critical for keeping coolant and combustion separate. Fixing this requires removing the cylinder head to inspect and replace the gasket, which is a major engine repair.

Your engine may have an issue covered under Toyota's California emissions defect and performance warranty, as documented in technical service bulletin 0135-19. However, your dealer refused to repair it under this warranty. You may want to contact Toyota customer service or another authorized dealer to address this coverage dispute.

Structure →3 issues
Your car's blue exterior paint has begun peeling and flaking off, starting around 2019, particularly on sun-exposed areas like the roof, rear window panel, and trunk. The black trim panel behind the rear right mirror also started peeling at the same time. Both your dealership and an independent shop have confirmed this is a serious paint defect, and the underlying concern is that exposed metal could eventually corrode if the protective paint layer continues to fail.

While driving on Highway 99 in California, your car ran over debris in the road, causing a loud thud that shook the vehicle and frightened your family. The impact broke your front bumper and dented the right door. While this wasn't a crash, the sudden impact could have been dangerous if other vehicles were nearby. Repairs will likely involve replacing the front bumper and repairing or replacing the right door.

The paint on your Prius is peeling in several areas: around the trunk and on the black trim pieces near the rear passenger windows on both sides. The clear protective coating has worn away in these spots. This is a cosmetic issue that may worsen over time and could affect the appearance of your vehicle.

Tires →2 issues
Your passenger front tire (Prinx HiCITY HH2 175/65R15 84H) failed without warning after about 15,000 miles of use, with the sidewall bursting even though there was no visible puncture or impact damage. You had to replace it with your spare tire. This appears to be a manufacturing defect rather than normal wear or road damage.

The owner has filed a complaint about the tires on this 2016 Toyota Prius but did not provide details in the summary. Without specific information about what tire issue occurred, we cannot determine if this involves premature wear, sidewall damage, tread separation, or another problem. The owner referenced an attached document that should contain the full complaint details.

Steering,power Train,engine →1 issue
Your car's hybrid system shut down unexpectedly while you were driving, causing the steering power to stop working and leaving you stranded in the road. You received a warning message about low steering power, which is especially dangerous if this happens during rain, cold weather, or heavy traffic. The issue involves the hybrid system, engine, and power steering all failing together. This may require diagnosis of the hybrid battery, power steering pump, or related hybrid control modules.

Power Train,electrical System,engine →1 issue
During hot summer weather (above 100°F), when you accelerate from a stop, your engine revs up but the car barely moves at 1-2 mph even with the pedal to the floor. After 3-4 seconds, the tires squeal and the car suddenly lurches forward before accelerating normally. This happens occasionally with no warning lights or error codes, and has left you stuck in intersections. You've had two shops unable to reproduce the issue, but you've found similar complaints online and note there's a recall for this problem on other Priuses.

Service Brakes →1 issue
After driving over a pothole, your brakes became soft and unresponsive about 50 miles later, requiring hard pedal pressure to slow down and nearly causing a rear-end collision. A mechanic checked your brake fluid level and found no leaks, but the cause of the brake failure remains unclear. This may require inspection of your brake master cylinder, brake lines, or brake pads for internal damage or wear that a fluid level check alone wouldn't detect.

Electrical System,service Brakes →1 issue
While driving on the freeway, your car displayed warning messages about low braking power, antilock brake system malfunction, pre-collision system malfunction, and lane departure alert malfunction all at once. You were instructed to stop in a safe place, and the situation was frightening as you nearly had an accident. The issue likely involves the electrical system affecting multiple safety systems simultaneously, which will require diagnostic scanning to identify the root cause.

Structure,unknown Or Other,visibility/wiper →1 issue
Your 2016 Prius has been making clicking sounds from underneath the car since 2018, particularly from the steering area, which you believe could be a safety issue at highway speeds. You've also noticed peeling paint on the exterior and door areas, and your windshield cracked in an unusual pattern from a small rock impact. The repair likely involves inspection and replacement of steering components, weatherstripping, and the windshield.

Power Train →1 issue
While driving on the freeway, your Prius V began shaking violently, which you suspect was caused by overheating or a failure of the water pump or coolant inverter pump. You believe this is a known issue that Toyota is aware of, though the dealer was unable to reproduce the problem. This type of powertrain failure could potentially cause loss of vehicle control at highway speeds.

Exterior Lighting →1 issue
Your headlights are too bright or aimed too high, causing oncoming drivers to flash their high beams at you frequently—even when your car is empty and you're not using high beams. This suggests either the bulbs are too bright or the headlight aim is misaligned. Fixing this typically involves adjusting the headlight aiming screws or replacing the bulbs with standard brightness alternatives.
