Component: AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2011-2019 Corolla, 2011-2013 Matrix, 2012-2018 Avalon, and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrid vehicles. During certain crashes, the air bag electronic control unit (ECU) may malfunction, possibly disabling the deployment of the air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners.

Risk: In the event of a crash, air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners that do not deploy as intended may increase the risk of injury.

Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ECU and install a noise filter between the air bag control module and its wire harness, as necessary, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk beginning March 2, 2020. A second letter notifying owners of the remedy repair will be mailed between March 16, 2020 and June 27, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 20TB03, 20TA03 and 20TA05.

Filed: Mar 2026

Your clutch slave cylinder failed and leaked brake fluid, which contaminated your clutch assembly and made it impossible to shift gears properly. This caused your clutch pedal to stick and created a risk of stalling in traffic or being unable to accelerate, which could lead to a collision. Both your clutch slave cylinder and the clutch itself will need to be replaced, and your brake fluid system should be inspected for leaks.

Your manual transmission's slave cylinder may fail between 20,000 and 70,000 miles, causing your car to lock into gear without warning and become unable to shift — this happened to the owner on a busy highway. When the plastic slave cylinder fails, it leaks brake fluid onto the clutch and flywheel, requiring replacement of multiple components at a cost of $4,000–$5,000. Fixing this issue will require removing the transmission to replace the failed slave cylinder and any damaged internal components it affected.

Your car's clutch felt sluggish and was checked at a dealer at 79,000 miles. The dealer found low brake fluid but said the clutch was fine, but the very next day the clutch failed completely, leaving you stranded on the highway. The issue appears to be with the slave cylinder that operates the clutch, which may be prone to failure on this model.

Filed: Mar 2026

Your clutch pedal suddenly got stuck to the floor without any warning signs, leaving you unable to shift gears. You had to manually pull the pedal back up to shift. The clutch release bearing or slave cylinder failed at just under 30,000 miles.

NHTSA #: 11727668

Your manual transmission has trouble engaging or shifts roughly when you put it in first gear or reverse, happening at least once a day. The clutch slave cylinder appears to be failing or has failed completely, which prevents the transmission from working properly. A mechanic will likely need to inspect and possibly replace the clutch slave cylinder and related clutch components.

Filed: Nov 2025

Your clutch has failed because the clutch release bearing and slave cylinder assembly are leaking. This means your car may have difficulty shifting gears or the clutch pedal may feel soft or unresponsive. The repair will likely involve replacing the leaking slave cylinder assembly and clutch release bearing.

Filed: Sep 2025

Your clutch slave cylinder has failed, which is a known issue affecting 6-speed manual Toyota Corolla hatchbacks. Some owners report this happening as early as 40,000 miles, which is unusually premature for this part. The repair will likely involve replacing the clutch slave cylinder.

Filed: Feb 2026

Your clutch slave cylinder failed, leaving you unable to operate the vehicle. Because your car shares the brake fluid reservoir between the clutch and brake systems, this failure also affects your brakes. This repair typically costs over $4,000 and involves significant labor time, plus potential warranty disputes with dealers.

FireFiled: Jan 2026

Your 2019 Toyota Corolla caught fire while parked and turned off, with the fire starting in the driver's seat area. There was no collision, no aftermarket equipment, and no heated seat in use — the vehicle was simply stationary when the fire began. The fire damage points to an electrical problem in the seat wiring or components rather than owner misuse. Fixing this would likely require a complete inspection and replacement of the driver seat assembly and associated electrical wiring harnesses.

Service Brakes1 issue
criticalSERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Nov 2025

Your brake booster may be failing, causing your car to require longer stopping distances and making it harder to control your vehicle safely. You noticed this issue suddenly on October 10, 2025, with no warning signs beforehand. A local mechanic and later a Toyota dealership confirmed that your brake master cylinder and brake booster are losing pressure internally and need to be replaced. Fixing this will require replacing the brake booster and master cylinder at a dealership or qualified repair shop.

criticalSEAT BELTS
CrashFiled: Oct 2025

Your car was involved in a head-on collision where the driver's seatbelt webbing tore during impact. The airbags and seatbelt pretensioners deployed as designed during the crash, which involved a maximum impact force of 41.4 mph. A professional inspection of your restraint system components would be needed to determine if the seatbelt assembly requires replacement.

CrashFiled: Sep 2025

After hitting a deer at 65 mph, your car sustained severe front-end damage (crushed radiator, destroyed airbox, folded hood, destroyed headlight), but the airbags—both driver-side and side curtain—did not deploy despite the high-speed impact and significant damage. Because the airbags didn't deploy, the car's Safety Connect system also failed to automatically call 911. You have maintenance records showing no prior airbag warning lights or service, and the car had only one previous minor collision that was repaired two years earlier.

NHTSA #: 11687461

highUNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Mar 2026

Your car displayed a 'drive start control malfunction' error message that took months and multiple repair attempts to resolve. The fuel pump was failing because its plastic housing was deteriorating and cracking, requiring replacement along with other parts at significant cost. You're now also seeing a 'connected device not supported' message, which appears to be related to a software bug in Toyota's system that you had to pay to fix.

NHTSA #: 11724036
Steering1 issue
highSTEERING
Filed: Jan 2026

Your steering wheel becomes difficult to turn in either direction while driving, and your dashboard shows warning lights for power steering, hazard, and Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with a message telling you to visit the dealer. When you turn off the LDA, a red power steering warning light appears on and off intermittently. A battery replacement was attempted but the problem came back, suggesting a deeper electrical or power steering issue that needs proper diagnosis and repair.

Filed: Nov 2025

Your clutch feels spongy and the friction point feels unusual, indicating the slave cylinder (which operates your clutch) is failing at 66,200 miles. This could cause your car to lurch forward unexpectedly when stopped or break down completely without warning. The repair will likely involve replacing the clutch slave cylinder and possibly related clutch components.

highEXTERIOR LIGHTING
Filed: Oct 2025

Your headlight has failed, but Toyota's design requires replacing the entire headlight assembly unit instead of just the bulb—a repair costing thousands of dollars. Your passenger-side light is already out, and your driver-side light is flickering and cutting out, making nighttime driving unsafe. The LED lights were supposed to last the car's lifetime, but they're failing prematurely. The repair will involve purchasing and installing a complete headlight assembly unit.
