2005 TOYOTA COROLLA 80,132 MILES THE CAR DIED YESTERDAY IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY ROAD. FORTUNATELY, MY SON WAS STILL CLOSE TO HOME AND I WAS ABLE TO HELP PUSH THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND WAIT FOR ROAD SERVICE. WHEN I GOT HOME I CHECKED THE ENGINE AND COMPONENTS BUT HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO GET POWER GOING TO THE FUEL PUMP. ALL RELAYS AND FUSES ARE GOOD. I PURCHASED A NEW FUEL PUMP AND THE CAR WILL STILL WILL NOT START. A TECHNICIAN SUGGESTED IT WAS A ECU FAILURE AND THESE HAD RECALLS.

IN 2011 THE ECM (ENGINE CONTROL MODULE) WAS REPLACED IN MY 2005 COROLLA AS PART OF A NATIONAL SAFETY RECALL AOJ. IN JUST UNDER 5 YEARS AND 22K MILES LATER THE REPLACED ECM STARTED DEMONSTRATING FAILING SYMPTOMS, INCLUDING MALFUNCTIONING TACHOMETER, ENGINE TEMPERATURE GAUGE, AND A/C MALFUNCTIONS. OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS SAME ISSUE ON THEIR REPLACED ECMS. BASED ON INFORMATION AVAILABLE FOR THE ORIGINAL RECALL, THE ORIGINAL ECM ISSUE RELATES TO POOR SOLDERING JOINTS WITHIN THE ECM. THE ISSUE WITH THE REPLACED ECMS IS LIKELY THE SAME, ALTHOUGH THE AFFECTED ELEMENTS WITHIN THE ECM MAY DIFFER FROM OWNER TO OWNER. I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND ASKED TO BE REIMBURSED FOR MY COST TO REPLACE THE 2ND ECM BUT THEY REFUSED. AND IF LEFT UNFIXED, ACCORDING TO MY UNDERSTANDING, THE AIRBAG ON DRIVER SIDE POTENTIALLY UNEXPECTED DEPLOYED OR WONT DEPLOY AT ALL AT TIME OF ACCIDENT. OCTOBER 2013, MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING HER 2005 TOYOTA COROLLA IN SOUTHERN CA, WHEN SMOKE STARTED TO FILL THE CAR. THE SMOKE WAS COMING FROM THE DRIVER SIDE MASTER WINDOW SWITCH. THE SMOKE LASTED A FEW MINUTES, AND A BURNING SMELL OF PLASTIC ALSO FILLED THE CAR. THE CAR WAS STILL ABLE TO DRIVE, BUT THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. WHEN I TOOK A LOOK AT THE SWITCH, NONE OF THE SWITCHES AT THE MASTER CONTROL WERE WORKING AND ALL FELT COMPLETELY LOOSE. I PULLED THE SWITCH PANEL AWAY FROM THE DOOR AND COULD SEE HOW THE PLASTIC WAS COMPLETELY MELTED AND HAD BURNED HOLES THROUGH THE SWITCH. I CONTACTED THE DEALER AND ALL THEY COULD SAY WAS THAT THERE WAS NOT A RECALL ON THIS VIN# AND THEY WOULD NOT TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM, BUT THEY WERE AWARE OF PROBLEMS ON OTHER VIN #'S IN THE SAME MODEL. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY A FIRE HAZARD WITH THIS CAR AND TOYOTA KNOWS ABOUT IT. WHAT DOES IT TAKE FOR A LARGE COMPANY TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF A KNOWN PROBLEM? HAD JUST PICKED UP CAR FROM LYNCH TOYOTA AND $1,000 WORTH OF REPAIRS INCLUDING 02 SENSOR B/C CHECK ENGINE & TPMS LIGHTS WERE ON. WHILE DRIVING 65 M.P.H. ON HIGHWAY VEHICLE BEGAN ACCELERATING ON ITS' OWN UP TO 80 M.P.H. I DEPRESSED BRAKE AND SLOWED SPEED BUT UPON REMOVING FOOT FROM BRAKE CAR BEGAN ACCELERATING TO 80 M.P.H. A SECOND TIME, SO I MADE SURE MY FOOT WAS NOT ON GAS PEDAL AND DEPRESSED BRAKE AGAIN WHICH SLOWED SPEED BUT CAR ACCELERATED A THIRD TIME TO 80 M.P.H. AND MY FOOT WAS NOT ON GAS PEDAL BUT WHEN I TRIED TO DEPRESS BRAKE IT RESISTED AND WOULD NOT ENGAGE NO MATTER HOW HARD I PRESSED, SO I JAMMED DOWN ON GAS PEDAL A FEW TIMES AND IT "REVVED" AS IF IN PARK- DOING THIS SEEMED TO KICK THE CAR OUT OF PHANTOM DRIVING MODE AND ALLOWED ME TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE AND DRIVE STRAIGHT BACK TO LYNCH TOYOTA. TOYOTA HAD MY CAR FOR OVER A DAY AND SAID THEY SENT THE TEST RESULTS TO CA BUT "COULD NOT CONFIRM CONDITION" AND IT WAS "OPERATING ACCORDING TO DESIGN"- THAT POSSIBLE CAUSE WAS AFTERMARKET FLOOR MAT OR "PEDAL MIS-APPLICATION" BUT THE FLOOR MAT DOESN'T REACH THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THIS OCCURRED THREE (3) TIMES OVER A SHORT TIME SPAN AND I DELIBERATELY LIFTED MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL SO IT COULDN'T BE MIS-APPLICATION. I DECIDED TO DO RESEARCH FIRST AND FOUND A WHOLE LOT OF OTHER OWNERS HAVE THIS ISSUE. SOME HAVE TAKEN THE CAR IN FOR SERVICES INCLUDING COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF THE AIRBAG SYSTEM AND CLOCK (WHICH HAPPENS TO HAVE FAULTY CIRCUIT THAT CAN RESULT IN THE WARNING LIGHT COMING ON AND OFF INTERMITTENTLY.) SOME HAVE PAID OVER $1K IN SERVICE FEES. I CONTACTED TOYOTA ABOUT IT. THEY ARE NOT LOOKING TO OWN UP TO THIS QUALITY DEFECT. IT'S NOT A WEAR AND TEAR (VEHICLE AGE) ISSUE. THE CULPRIT APPEARS TO BE A COMPONENT THAT CRACKS OFF THE PCB ON THE CLOCK. SOMEONE HAS REPORTED HAVING RE-SOLDERED THIS COMPONENT TO ELIMINATE THE INTERMITTENT AIRBAG LIGHT ISSUE. (IE: RADIO, POWER WINDOWS, ALL LIGHTS ON DASHBOARD.) PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT I HAD BEEN EXPERIENCING A PROBLEM WITH STARTING THE CAR. THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT ENGAGE AND I NOTICED THAT ALL THE INDICATOR LIGHTS WERE NOT COMING ON WHEN STARTING THE CAR. I WOULD HAVE TO TURN OFF THE IGNITION AND RESTART THE CAR TWO OR THREE TIMES. WHEN I BOUGHT IT TO THE DEALER THEY SAID THEIR WAS A BROKEN WIRE IN RELAY BOX WHICH CAUSED THE BLOCK ASSEMBLY ? TO SHORT OUT. IT COST 1100.00 TO FIX AND IT IS ONLY GUARANTEED FOR 1 YEAR. THE CAR HAS ONLY 52,000 MILES ON IT. THIS PROBLEM SOUNDS LIKE THE PROBLEM WITH THE ECM RECALL BUT IT WAS CHANGED IN 2011. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN TOYOTA. OUR DRIVER SIDE SRS AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT HAS BEEN INTERMITTENTLY ON FOR OVER A YEAR. ONCE IT'S ON, I HAVE TO PULL OVER AND TURN THE IGNITION OFF, WAIT A FEW SECONDS, AND THEN RESTART THE CAR TO GET IT TO TURN OFF. THIS IS NOT ALWAYS SUCCESSFUL. I PUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION, STARTED THE CAR AND TURN THE HEATER. A COUPLE OF SECOND WENT BY I STARTED SMELLING SOMETHING BURNING. THAT MADE ME TURN OFF THE CAR AND GET OUT OF THE CAR. AIR FLOAT SENSOR OR ECM PROBLEM: IN MAY 2010, WHILE I WAS DRIVING HOME AFTER WORK, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME UP, AND WITHIN A FEW MINUTE, THE CAR SLOWED DOWN TO A STOP EVEN I PRESS ON THE GAS PADDLE. I TURNED THE CAR OFF FOR SEVERAL MINUTES AND TRIED STARTING IT AGAIN, AND THE CAR STARTED AGAIN AND CHECK ENGINE WAS OFF. HOWEVER, AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES OF DRIVING, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME UP AGAIN AND THE CAR SLOWED DOWN WITHIN A FEW MINUTE TO A COMPLETE STOP. THIS HAPPENED FOUR TIMES BEFORE I GOT HOME THAT DAY. I CALLED MY MECHANIC THE NEXT DAY TO COME TO INSPECT MY CAR. AFTER THE DIAGNOSE, THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE AIR FLOAT SENSOR AND THE AIR FILTER. AFTER THAT, MY CAR WORKED AGAIN. HOWEVER, I HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM A FEW MONTHS LATER. I HAD TO REPLACE THE AIR FLOAT SENSOR AGAIN. TWO OR THREE WEEKS AFTER THE SECOND REPLACEMENT, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME UP AGAIN. I BROUGHT IT TO THE AUTO SHOP, AND THE MECHANIC FOUND PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) AND REPLACED THE ORIGINAL ECM WITH AN USED ECM. THE SECURITY LIGHT CAME UP AFTER THE ECM WAS REPLACED. ACCORDING THE MECHANIC, THE SECURITY LIGHT CAME UP BECAUSE THE USED ECM DOESN'T HAVE THE SECURITY FEATURE THAT THE ORIGINAL ECM HAS. AFTER THAT, THE ENGINE LIGHT DIDN'T COME UP AGAIN TIL ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO (FEB. 2011). AROUND THE SAME TIME, I RECEIVED AN ECM SAFETY RECALL NOTICE FROM TOYOTA. I CONTACTED THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AND HAD THE ECM REPLACED ON FEB. 19, HOPING THAT IT WILL FIX THE SECURITY LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT PROBLEM. HOWEVER, BOTH THE SECURITY LIGHT AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINED ON AFTER THE REPLACEMENT THROUGH THE RECALL. GOT IT REPLACED, AND NOT EVEN 24 HOURS AFTER PICKING IT UP FROM THE DEALER, IT HAPPENED AGAIN, STRANDING ME AT WORK WITH NO WAY TO GET HOME. FAILURE OF ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (CURRENTLY REFERED TO AS "ECU" BY TOYOTA TECHNICIANS). THIS IS THE SECOND FAILURE OF THIS COMPONENT FOR THIS VEHICLE. THIS FAILURE HAS CAUSED MY CAR TO BUCK SIGNIFICANTLY ON UPSHIFTS OF THE AUTOMATIC TRANS. PART WAS ORIGINALLY REPLACED IN 2006 UNDER GUIDELINES OF TSB TC014-06. TC015-07 REFERS TO THE SAME PROBLEM AND WAS ISSUED AFTER REPAIRS TO MY VEHICLE. TOYOTA REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE CONTINUING FAILURE OF THIS PART.

INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) I HAVE HAD A VARIETY OF ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS SHOW UP IN MY 2005 COROLLA CE, [XXX]. THEY BEGAN ABOUT JULY 2009 AND CONTINUE TO THIS DAY, IN JULY, THE CAR WAS HARD TO START ON HOT DAYS. IT MAY BE CORROSION AT THE BATTERY GROUND OR IT MAY BE SOMETHING MORE SERIOUS. THEN, ABOUT THE 1ST OF JANUARY, THE ELECTRIC LOCKS FAILED TO WORK. ABOUT THE 20TH OF JANUARY, THEY WORKED AGAIN. THIS SUGGESTS THAT THE ECM IS SUBJECT TO WATER EXPOSURE, AND CORROSION....WHICH WILL LEAD TO OTHER, PERHAPS DANGEROUS, FAILS. FOR AT LEAST 6 MONTHS, THE PASSENGER SAFETY BAG LIGHT HAS BEEN ON. THIS TOO, SUGGESTS SOME TYPE OF WEATHER EXPOSURE TO A FLAWED DESIGN. IT IS DANGEROUS BECAUSE IT COULD MEAN THE SAFETY BAG MIGHT TRIGGER SPONTANEOUSLY WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION...THUS TRIGGERING AN ACCIDENT THAT COULD KILL ME, ANY PASSENGERS, AND IT COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT INVOLVING OTHER VEHICLES...RISKING THE LIVES OF MANY OTHERS. MY FINAL ELECTRICAL PROBLEM BEGAN ON/ABOUT 1 MARCH OF THIS YEAR. MY "ENGINE FAULT" LIGHT WENT ON AND REMAINS ON. I DID CHECK ALL FLUIDS ON THE TOP OF THE ENGINE AND FOUND THEM TO BE OKAY. I DON'T FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR AND IT IS NOW SITTING IN MY CAR PORT. I WON'T DRIVE IT UNTIL I CAN FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. I AM EVEN AFRAID TO DRIVE IT TO THE AAMCO BUSINESS FOR THE FREE DIAGNOSTIC CHECK THAT THEY OFFER. INSTEAD, I JUST BOUGHT A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL TO HELP ME FIGURE OUT IF THE CAR IS SAFE. I ALMOST FORGOT. THIS IS IN REGARDS TO MY 2005 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE COMPUTER (BRAIN) TO THE CAR WENT OUT. JUST ONE DAY I WAS DRIVING AND I CAME TO A RED LIGHT. WHEN I STOPPED, THE CAR JUST COMPLETELY TURNED ITSELF OFF. I TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR AND IT WOULD NOT RESTART. IT HAD THE SOUNDS OF A DEAD BATTERY TRYING TO START BUT IT WOULDN'T TURN OVER. SO I WAS STUCK AT THE LIGHT UNTIL A TOW TRUCK CAME TO GET ME. UPON TAKING IT TO A REPAIR SHOP, I FOUND OUT THAT THE COMPUTER HAD GONE OUT. I WAS THEN TOLD THAT THEY HAD A NOTICE OUT TO ALL MECHANICS SO IF A CAR CAME INTO THERE SHOP, THEY WOULD KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. I THEN CONTACTED TOYOTA WHO TOLD ME THAT I WAS 8,000 MILES OVER THE WARRANTY THAT THEY HAD SET TO REPLACE THIS DEFECT. I TRIED NUMEROUS TIMES TO GET THEM TO REPLACE IT AND THEY FLAT OUT DENIED ME. I KNOW MY CAR WASN'T THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. WHEN I TOLD THEM THAT I FELT IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE, THEY JUST TOLD ME THERE WASN'T ANYTHING THEY COULD DO FOR ME. MY REASONING FOR IT BEING A SAFETY ISSUE HAS TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT WHEN THAT PART GOES OUT, THE CAR WILL JUST TURN OFF AND YOU ARE STUCK. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE AT A LIGHT. WHAT IF I WAS ON THE FREEWAY? I WOULD OF BEEN STRUCK FROM BEHIND FROM THE OTHER CARS THAT WERE BEHIND ME GOING 65MPH. AFTER ARGUING WITH TOYOTA AND GETTING NOWHERE, I ENDED UP PAYING OVER $700.00 TO HAVE THE PART REPLACED SO I COULD ONCE AGAIN USE MY CAR TO GET TO WORK. I HAVE A 2005 TOYOTA COROLLA, AND I HAVE SOMETHING TO REPORT ABOUT THE CAR'S ELECTRONICS, EVEN THOUGH IT MAY NOT LEAD TO AN IMMEDIATE SAFETY ISSUE. AFTER A FEW DAYS/WEEKS THE CARD STOPPED WORKING. I TOOK IT IN TO THE ATTENDANT WHO DETERMINED THAT THE ID STRIP HAD BEEN CORRUPTED, ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NO APPARENT DAMAGE TO THE STRIP.. I OWN/DRIVE A 2005 TOYOTA COROLLA CE. STARTING LAST YEAR (2008) IT BEGAN STALLING WHILE DRIVING. THE FIRST TIME IT STALLED AS I WAS TAKING A RIGHT TURN INTO THE PARKING LOT. LATER IN THE SUMMER OF 2009 THE ECM HAD TO BE REPLACED AS SOON AS THE VEHICLE REACHED 80,000 MI. (WHICH IS JUST OVER THE WARRANTY LIMIT). I THOUGHT THAT MAYBE THE PREVIOUS INCIDENT WAS RELATED TO THE ECM. HOWEVER, THIS FALL THE PROBLEM STARTED AGAIN AND THE CAR STALLED WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH ON A LOCAL STREET. EVERY BUMP BEGAN TO MAKE THE LIGHTS FLICKER AND THE ENGINE STALL. SPARKS CAME OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD EVERY TIME I HIT A DEVIATION IN THE ROAD. I WENT TO A NEARBY LOCAL SHOP AND THEY SAID IT WAS RELATED TO A BROKEN PIECE HOLDING THE BATTERY. THEY REMOVED THE BROKEN BRACKET AND THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO HAVE STOPPED. DURING THAT DRIVE IT PROBABLY STALLED ABOUT 10 TIMES. THE PROBLEM HAS NOT OCCURRED AGAIN, HOWEVER, I CANNOT EXPRESS HOW AWFUL IT WAS TO BE DRIVING WITH TWO CHILDREN IN YOUR BACK SEAT IN A VEHICLE THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE SAFE WHILE IT STALLS AND YOU HAVE TO QUICKLY MANEUVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. OF COURSE TOYOTA DOES NOT HAVE ANY INTEREST IN HELPING ME WHILE I AM ABOVE MY WARRANTY. I THINK THAT THIS ISSUE ALONG WITH THE ECM NEEDING TO BE REPLACED AT WARRANTY EXPIRATION IS ENOUGH FOR ME NEVER TO PURCHASE ANOTHER TOYOTA VEHICLE EVER AGAIN. *TR

ON DECEMBER 11, 2008 MY DAUGHTER DROVE MY CAR TO HER PART TIME JOB, SHE CALLED AND TOLD ME THAT THE CAR STOPPED ON HER AS SHE PULLED INTO THE PARKING LOT OF THE BANK, BUT STARTED BACK UP.
