At 20,000 miles, one of your factory tires developed a straight split along the tread and shoulder area with exposed steel cords, despite no obvious impact or damage to the wheel. Your Subaru dealer replaced the tire, but the cause appears to be a manufacturing or material defect rather than road damage. The tire repair will involve replacement with a new tire.
