The air bag light went on. Had all previous codes cleared by mechanic. a week later, light is now blinking. In the past year, came out to a car that would not start. Battery may have a bad cell. I think there might be an electrical problem that causes the car to shut down spontaneously.
I was on the freeway on my way to LA then out of nowhere my car started to slow down then the check engine light came on and i was trying to move over to the emergency lane and and almost got hit by the car behind me and the one behind me in the lane i was switching in to once i got the side i turned the car off and on and it fixed it for a while but then then it did it again the same night later on and now it does it randomly

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that upon pressing the start button to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start after several attempts. The contact stated that he was able to open the trunk and activate the alarm using the key fob, but the vehicle would not start. There was no warning light illuminated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised that they could not assist because the VIN was not included in a recall related to the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. In 2009 Nissan built S models with an SL package. These models came with a push button start in lieu of a key start. These vehicles came with an electronic steering wheel lock mechanism. The electronic steering wheel lock mechanism was deemed defective on the push button start vehicles. Nissan ultimately did a campaign to have this repaired. In November 2021, my Nissan Altima electronic steering mechanism prevented my vehicle from turning on. I researched the problem and learned of the expired Nissan campaign. I never received notification of said campaign. I contacted Nissan Consumer Affairs and started a complaint. After being told by Nissan Consumer Affairs that my vehicle didn't qualify for the campaign, I paid Rockland Nissan $1411.60 for the repair. Soon thereafter, I purchased another electronic part associated with this push button start system. During this transaction, I provided the Rockland Nissan parts employee with my vin number. I learned that my vin number reflected that my vehicle has a key start ignition. I literally had to escort the parts employee outside and show them the vehicle to prove that it did have a push button start. I again contacted Nissan Consumer Affairs. I informed them of my findings. Stated it was unfair that my vehicle didn't qualify for their campaign because the vin shows up as the vehicle having a key start ignition. I sent photos of my vehicle, my original window sticker showing that my vehicle came with a push button start system. They responded that the campaign ended and my vehicle is now too old and has too many miles. I responded that this was not the case when the campaign was active. I also stated neither I nor the original owner were ever notified of the campaign. And they should have covered the repair for these reasons.

IN 2020 RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM NISSAN FOR STEERING COLUMN LOCK REPLACEMENT. TOOK CAR TO GREENVILLE NISSAN (GREENVILLE, NC). SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME MY VEHICLE WAS ACTUALLY NOT PART OF THAT RECALL, DESPITE THE NISSAN USA LETTER, SO I LEFT. APPROX. 9 MONTHS LATER (2/23/2021) THAT EXACT PART BROKE ON MY CAR, RESULTING IN INABILITY TO START ENGINE. COST ME $900+ OUT OF POCKET TO FIX EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS RECALLED FOR AND NOT ORIGINALLY DONE. FWIW THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER SAID THE SAME DEALERSHIP TRIED THE SAME THING WITH HIM ON HIS CAR. I AM ATTACHING ALL MY DOCUMENTATION FROM ORIGINAL LETTER, DOCUMENTS DEALER GAVE ME IN 2020, AND THE 2021 REPAIR AS WELL AS THE COST OF A RENTAL CAR TO GET AROUND DURING SERVICE.
I WAS LEFT STRANDED WHEN CAR WOULD NOT START. THANKFULLY I WAS IN A PARKING LOT AND NOT ON THE ROAD. I HAD IT TOWED TO DEALER. TURNS OUT IT WAS A DEFECTIVE STEERING WHEEL LOCK. NISSAN HAD PREVIOUSLY HAD A SERVICE CAMPAIGN TO REPLACE THIS PART FREE OF CHARGE BECAUSE THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THAT IT WAS DEFECTIVE AT MANUFACTURE. I WAS NOT AWARE OF THIS CAMPAIGN AND AM NOW OUT $862.46 AS NISSAN DECIDED IT WILL NO LONGER HONOR THEIR RESPONSIBILITY IN THIS CAMPAIGN.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO JEFFERY NISSAN (LOCATED AT 30800 GRATIOT AVE, ROSEVILLE, MI 48066, (586) 510-1378) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE LOCKING MECHANISM THAT RECEIVED THE SIGNAL FROM THE KEYS FOR THE TOUCH START NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 38,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
DASHBOARD IS MELTING, STICKY AND IS DISCOLORING INSIDE WINDSHIELD. THE SUN REFLECTS OFF STICKY DASH. BROWN STICKY SUBSTANCE WON'T CLEAN OFF. ELECTRICAL DISPLAY BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL GOES OFF AND ON. MOSTLY IS OFF.
START STOP BUTTING IS STUCK IN LOCK POSITION THEREFORE NOT STARTING THE CAR. FOBS DOOR UNLOCK, LOCK, TRUNK AND PANIC BUTTONS WORK BUT CAR DOES NOT TURN ON. CAR WILL NOT TURN ON WHEN FOB IS INSERTED IN THE LEFT HAND SIDE INSERT EITHER. HAPPENED AT 67 EAST SHORE ROAD, HOLBROOK MA AFTER CAR WAS SHUT OFF FOR THE NIGHT. NEXT MORNING IT DIDN'T READ THE KEY.
STEERING LOCK FAILURE WILL NOT ALLOW THE CAR TO START UP ON 09 NISSAN ALTIMA. ELECTRICAL WORKS BUT ECSL DOESN'T ALLOW SENSOR TO START THE CAR. CAR WAS STATIONARY, IN THE PARKING LOT. FINDING NOW THIS IS A WELL DOCUMENT ISSUE WITH MANY MAKES/YEARS OF NISSAN VEHICLES.
DRIVING ON INTERSTATE WITH CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED AT 70 MPH, SPEED DROPPED TO APPROX 30-40 MPH. I HAD THE PEDAL TO THE MAT AND IT WOULDN'T GO ANY FASTER THAN 30-40 MPH. TOOK IT OFF CRUISE CONTROL, IT STILL WOULDN'T PICK UP SPEED WITH THE PEDAL TO THE MAT. SUDDENLY CAR ACCELERATED TO APPROX 80-90 MPH AND WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN WHEN I REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE GAS PEDAL FOR AT LEAST 30-60 SECONDS. THE SPEED THEN DROPPED AGAIN TO 30-40 MPH FOR ABOUT 5-10 MINUTES UNTIL IT WOULD TAKE OFF AGAIN. IT WOULD ACCELERATE FOR ONLY ABOUT 30-60 SECONDS THEN WOULD LOSE POWER AGAIN AND WOULDN'T GO ABOVE 30-40 MPH. TRIED TO RESET CRUISE CONTROL AND STILL WOULD NOT FIX THE ISSUE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED ASAP. IF TRAVELLING ON THE INTERSTATE IN NORMAL TRAFFIC, THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT VERY EASILY. THIS HAPPENED LATE AT NIGHT WITH NO OTHER CARS ON THE ROAD AT THE TIME.
TAKATA RECALL - ALTHOUGH MY CAR HAS NOT YET BEEN AFFECTED BY HE RECALL I BELIEVE THAT IT WILL BE. THE PASSENGER AIRBAG SENSOR IS FAULTY WHICH AFFECTS THE AMBER DASHBOARD PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT FROM WORKING PROPERLY WHICH THEREFORE WILL NOT ALLOW THE AIRBAG TO DEPLOY IF IN AN ACCIDENT. OR MORE SO ALLOWING THE AIRBAG TO DEPLOY AT ANY GIVEN TIME WITHOUT BEING IN AN ACCIDENT. THIS SENSOR DISARMS THE WHOLE AIRBAG SYSTEM FROM WORKING PROPERLY WHICH IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD.

CAR CAUGHT ON FIRE COMPLETELY TOTALED. IT WAS DRIVEN LESS THAN 2 MILES PARKED AND SHUT OFF. WITHIN 15 MINUTES THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY ENGULFED IN FLAMES.
THE PUSH-BUTTON STARTER SYSTEM FAILED, LEAVING ME STRANDED. THIS IS A STEERING LOCK ISSUE VERY COMMON TO THIS MAKE AND MODEL.
STEERING WHEEL LOCK FAILURE RENDERED THE CAR UNSTARTABLE
WHEN I LEFT THE OFFICE TO START MY CAR YESTERDAY EVENING ON 2/15/2017, I USED MY KEY FOB TO REMOTELY UNLOCK MY PARKED 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA. UPON ENTERING THE VEHICLE AND DEPRESSING THE BRAKE THOUGH, THE PUSH BUTTON IGNITION DID NOTHING. THE CAR DID NOT START, NOR WOULD IT SWITCH TO ACCESSORY MODE. ON THE DASH CLUSTER, AN AMBER COLORED "KEY" LIGHT LIT UP. THE PUSH BUTTON IGNITION GLOWED ORANGE WHILE THE RING AROUND IT SAID "LOCK;" NOTHING SEEMED TO ALLOW THE CAR TO START. IT WAS AS IF THE KEY FOB WAS NOT RECOGNIZED BY THE CAR. EVEN THOUGH I WAS REPEATEDLY ABLE TO LOCK AND UNLOCK THE DOORS REMOTELY FROM OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE (THE CR2025 BATTERY INSIDE WAS NOT DEAD...) AND THE INTERIOR LIGHTS WOULD WORK (THE CAR BATTERY WAS NOT DEAD EITHER...), THE CAR REFUSED TO START. I CONSULTED THE MANUAL AND VERIFIED THAT THE KEY FOB WAS INSERTED CORRECTLY INTO THE SLOT TO THE LEFT OF THE STEERING COLUMN - STILL, THE CAR REFUSED TO START. I CALLED AAA TO REQUEST A TOW SINCE NOTHING SEEMED TO LET ME START THE CAR. FOR THE NEXT HOUR AND A HALF I SAT IN BELOW-FREEZING TEMPERATURES WHILE I WAITED FOR THE TOW TRUCK I CALLED FOR TO ARRIVE. MY CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED. MY SPOUSE MET ME AT THE DEALERSHIP WITH THE OTHER KEY FOB SO WE COULD TEST WHETHER MY KEY WAS THE ONLY AFFECTED FOB; UNFORTUNATELY, THE OTHER KEY FOB DID NOT ALLOW THE CAR TO START EITHER. WIFE DROVE CAR TO WORK, GOT READY TO LEAVE AND CAR WOULD NOT START. SECURITY LIGHTS ON DASH WAS LIT UP . I CAME HOME FROM WORK TRIED EXTRA KEY FOB AND TRIED NEW CAR BATTERY, STILL WOULD NOT START. THIS COST ME 1124.00 DOLLARS AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED IN A FACTORY RECALL. THE 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA IS NOTORIOUS FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE CAR ONLY HAD 68428 MILES AT TIME OF INCIDENT
THIS IS BY FAR THE WORST VEHICLE I HAVE EVER PURCHASED. I HAVE REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION ONCE....IT STILL DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY AND SHIFTS SO HARD MY PASSENGERS THINK I'M SLAMMING ON THE BRAKES. AND NOW THE STEERING LOCK MODULE HAS FAILED. AFTER READING 100S OF COMPLAINTS FROM PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUE, I AM APPALLED TO FIND THAT THIS IS NOT A RECALL. CAR WOULD NOT START WOULD NOT RECOGNIZE KEY FOB. ELECTRICAL STEERING CONTROL LOCK FAILED. LEFT DAUGHTER STRANDED. VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY.
STEERING LOCK DEFECTIVE, KNOWN PROBLEM BY NISSAN SINCE 2009, REFUSED TO RECALL THE CARS INVOLVED. I JUST SPENT $923.00 TO FIX MY '09 WITH 91K MILES ON IT. CAR LEFT ME STRANDED IN A SAFE SPOT, FORTUNATELY. AFTER I PARKED, WALKED AWAY FOR A FEW MINUTES, TRIED TO RESTART, NOTHIING BUT THE TWO KEY LIGHTS IN THE DASH, HORN, OVERHEAD LIGHTS AND ALARM. STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT LOCK. THIS NEEDS TO BE AN ACTIVE RECALL AND OWNERS REIMBURSED FOR THE WORK INVOLVED!!!
THE STEERING LOCK MECHANISM FAILED SUDDENLY. I DROVE TO THE GROCERY STORE AND PARKED IN THE PARKING LOT. WHEN I GOT BACK IN MY CAR TO LEAVE, THE CAR DIDN'T START. IT DIDN'T RECOGNIZE THE KEY FOB AND DID NOT ALLOW ME TO USE THE OVERRIDE SYSTEM. THE STEERING LOCK WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP SERVICE CENTER. THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP SERVICE TEAM INFORMED ME THE STEERING LOCK MECHANISM HAD FAILED. AFTER DOING RESEARCH, I FOUND THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL. NISSAN EXTENDED THE WARRANTY FOR THIS PART BUT IT HAD EXPIRED. THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH THIS YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL AND NISSAN SHOULD BE FORCED TO RECALL THIS PART AND REIMBURSE PEOPLE WHO HAD TO HAVE IT REPAIRED AFTER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY EXPIRED.
THE INTELLIGENT KEY SYSTEM FAILED RENDERING THE CAR COMPLETELY INOPERABLE. I DROVE THE CAR WHICH OPERATED PERFECTLY WITH NO WARNING LIGHTS, TURNED IT OFF AND NEXT TIME I GOT INTO THE CAR TO START IT AND DRIVE AWAY. THE INTELLIGENT KEY (PUSHBUTTON START) DID NOT RECOGNIZE THAT THE KEY WAS IN THE CAR SO THE CAR WOULD NOT START. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED SO COULD NOT BE STEERED, COULD NOT BE PUSHED DUE TO THE CAR BEING LOCKED IN PARK. NO ACCESSORIES FUNCTIONED INSIDE THE CAR. THE REMOTE FUNCTIONS ON THE KEY FOB ALL WORKED, DOOR LOCKS, TRUNK RELEASE, PANIC BUTTON, BUT THE IGNITION SYSTEM WAS A COMPLETE FAIL. THERE IS NO BYPASS FOR THE AVERAGE CONSUMER. WHILE IT IS CERTAINLY INCONVENIENT, IT COULD ALSO BE DANGEROUS IF THE CAR WAS TO HAVE BEEN SHUT OFF IN A REMOTE AREA, IN SEVER COLD OR BESIDE A BUSY HIGHWAY. NISSAN REALIZED THAT THE STEERING LOCK MECHANISM WAS FAULTY AND ORIGINALLY OFFERED A FREE REPLACEMENT FOR THIS PART WHICH IS ESTIMATED TO COST BETWEEN $500-$900, BUT FROM WHAT I HAVE READ THEY HAVE RESCINDED THAT OFFER AS OF JANUARY OF 2016.
WE HAVE A DEFECTS IN THE ELECTRONIC STEERING COLUMN LOCK (ESCL) WHICH HAS DISABLE THE PUSH-BUTTON IGNITION ON NISSAN ALTIMA 2009 SL. IT CAN HAPPENED ANYTIME WHICH PUT A PERSONS LIFE IN DANGER IF YOU GET STUCK ON OR TO F THE ROAD. BASED ON MY RESEARCH I HAVE READ NUMEROUS CASES WHERE VERY SAME SITUATION HAD CAUSED BY FAULTY ELECTRONIC STEERING COLUMN LOCK (ESCL). I FOUND THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR THIS MODEL CAR. THE CAR FAILS TO EVEN TURN ON THE TO THE ACC MODE. NISSAN KNOWS THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM AND EXTENDED THE WARRANTY FOR ONLY 72 MONTHS AND HAS REFUSED TO MAKE A RECALL SINCE IT INVOLVES A PARKED CAR. THE TEMPERATURE FOR TODAY WAS 26 DEGREES AND HAD I BEEN SOMEWHERE FAR FROM HOME WHERE MY FATHER COULDN'T PICK ME UP THEN I'D BE STRANDED IN THE COLD TO FREEZE. ONE OF THE REPRESENTATIVES AT THE DEALER INDICATED THAT MANY PEOPLE WITH THIS CAR HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS, IN FACT THAT DAY THERE WERE THREE 2009 ALTIMAS IN THE SAME AREA GOING TO THE SAME DEALER WITH THE "SMART KEY" LOCKING THE CAR. NISSAN IS GOING TO REIMBURSE $800.00+ DOLLARS BECAUSE I BELIEVE THEY KNOW THIS IS A PROBLEM, YET THEY HAVE NOT ANNOUNCED AN OFFICIAL RECALL. AT NO TIMES WHILE THE CAR WAS GETTING SERVICED WAS I INFORMED THAT THERE WAS A POTENTIAL PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK SENSOR AND THE CAR WOULD OT START AND BECAUSE OF THAT NISSAN HAD EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO COVER THE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF THE PART, EARLIER THIS WEEK MY CAR WOULD NOT START AND I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED 35 MILES TO MY MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A STEERING LOCK SENSOR FAILURE. THE COST TO REPAIR THE CAR WAS 725.00. I CONDUCTED SOME RESEARCH THE PROBLEM AND FOUND SEVERAL ARTICLES ON LINE CONCERNING THE PROBLEM AND THAT NISSAN HAD EXTENDED THE WARRANTY. AGAIN, I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED IN PERSON WHILE THE CAR WAS BEING SERVICED OR BY MAIL BY THE DEALER OR NISSAN. BASED ON MY RESEARCH I BELIEVE THAT THE DEALER OR NISSAN HAD THE OBLIGATION TO NOTIFY ME OF THE POTENTIAL PROBLEM. AT THE TIME THAT THE SENSOR FAILED I WAS APPROXIMATELY 35 MILES FROM HOME AND HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED. AT TIMES I HAVE MY GRANDCHILDREN WITH ME AND THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A MORE SERIOUS SITUATION IF THEY WERE WITH ME.

STEPPED AGAIN ON BRAKES, MORE FIRMLY, BUT DID NOT SLOW CAR WHICH CONTINUED TO ROLL SLOWLY FORWARD ABOUT 7 MPH. SUDDENLY, LOUD REVVING, CAR CONTINUED FORWARD ROLL. IMMEDIATELY, ADDED LEFT FOOT TO BRAKE, PRESSING WITH FULL WEIGHT. NO RESPONSE. ABOUT 2-3 SECOND AFTER REVVING/HARD BRAKING, THE CAR OPENED FULL THROTTLE AND HURTLED FORWARD ABOUT 1-1/2 TO 2 CAR LENGTHS; SLAMMED INTO WALL. AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY MY CAR HAD ONLY 25290 MILES (ONLY ABOUT TWO YEARS OF NORMAL USAGE) AT THE TIME THE SYSTEM FAILED. MY LEFT KNEE SUSTAINED SMALL GASH FROM THE UNDERSIDE OF THE STEERING COLUMN WHEN I WAS SLAMMED BACK AFTER IMPACT THREW ME FORWARD, FOREHEAD KNOCKED THE UPPER STEERING WHEEL. THE SAME THING HAPPENED WHEN TESTED AT THE COLLISION CENTER AFTER ACCIDENT; IT'S ON TAPE. THE REP AT THE COLLISION CENTER WAS INFORMED OF THE SWITCH PROBLEM FROM THE START. WHEN I THEM TESTED DAYS LATER, THE AUDIO CONTROLS WORKED PROPERLY. ALSO, AN INDICATOR ON THE DASH WENT FROM SHOWING THE MPG WITH A BAR AS I ACCELERATED OR SLOWED, THEN SWITCHED TO A DIGITAL REPORT OF 18 MPG/CITY. IT KEPT SHIFTING BETWEEN THESE INDICATORS WITHOUT MY INTERFERENCE. FINALLY, THE AIRBAG FAILED TO DEPLOY ALTHOUGH IMPACT CLEARLY EXCEEDED 15 MPH. I BELIEVE THERE WAS A SEVERE FAILURE OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; THE CVT SYSTEM WITH ITS SENSORS, ETC. IS DEPENDENT ON IT. MY ACCOUNT PARALLELS REPORTS I HAVE UNCOVERED ABOUT SUDDEN ACCELERATION. I NOTED THAT OFTEN AN EVENT WAS PRECIPITATED BY A SLOWING, AND A TURN. WHEN I RECENTLY TALKED TO A NISSAN TECH ABOUT THE SWITCHES, AIRBAG, INDICATOR FAILURES, HE MENTIONED PINCHED HARNESS COULD BE A POSSIBILITY.

THE FIRST PART WAS REPLACED IN JUNE OF 2015 DUE TO THE CAR NOT STARTING, AND THE VEHICLE NOT RECOGNIZING THE BRAKE WAS DEPRESSED (REQUIREMENT FOR KEY LESS START). UPON DEALER INSPECTION, I WAS CHARGED A VERY HEFTY FEE FOR A SMALL PART AND LABOR. PART: 25320-AX00C SHOWED TO BE AT FAULT. AT SECOND TIME, AUGUST 2016, THE SAME PROBLEMS PERSISTED. THIS TIME, THERE WAS A BURNING SMELL. I FOUND THE PART THAT WAS REPLACED, OPENED IT UP, AND FOUND THE INSIDE CONNECTORS FROZEN TO THE CONTACTS AND WHAT LOOK LIKED A SMALL FLASH OR BURN HAD OCCURRED. THE CONTACTS WERE SEPARATED AND THE CAR STARTED AGAIN. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, THE BURNING SMELL REAPPEARED AND THE PART WAS NOTED TO HAVE POSSIBLY STARTED ON FIRE VERY BRIEFLY, OR BEEN SUBJECT TO A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF HEAT. PART HAS BEEN RETAINED. PART WAS REPLACED WITH AFTERMARKET PART, AND CAR NOW STARTS WITHOUT ANY SMELLS. DEALERSHIP DENY'S PROBLEM WITH BRAKE SWITCH, DESPITE WIDESPREAD INTERNET CHATTER ABOUT SAME ISSUE HAPPENING TO OTHER OWNERS OF KEY LESS START NISSAN VEHICLES.

I LEARNED THAT THERE HAD BEEN AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR 2009 ALTIMAS, BECAUSE THE ELECTRONIC STEERING COLUMN LOCK HAD FAILED. I NEVER WAS NOTIFIED AND HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO HAVE IT FIXED. THIS WAS A BAFFLING AND FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE AND I WAS LUCKY THAT I WAS NOT STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!

THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION TO BE IN BECAUSE I HAD NO WARNING THAT THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN AND THIS TIME IT WAS NOT TOO COLD. I WAS ABLE TO USE MY CELLPHONE TO CALL A FRIEND TO HELP. I HAD TO GET A RIDE BACK TO MY CAR THE NEXT DAY AND WAIT FOR A TOW TRUCK. I WAS WITHOUT MY VEHICLE FOR 3 DAYS WAITING FOR IT TO BE SERVICED. THIS COST ME $900 TO FIX. THIS IS A DEFECTIVE PART IN THE 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA AND THERE IS NO WAY TO KNOW IF IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN AND SHOULD BE COVERED BY A RECALL FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR.
MY 2009 NISSAN ULTIMA WAS PARKED IN MY WORK PARKING LOT AND WOULD NOT START KEYLESS ENTRY PAD MOUNT FUNCTION AND HAD THE LOCK STEERING GAVE ME PROBLEMS AND IT WOULD NOT START I FELT ENDANGERED BECAUSE EVERYONE AT WORK LEFT AND I WAS ALL ALONE WAITING FOR A TOW TRUCK.
PASSENGER OCCUPANT SENSOR HAS FAILED. THE AMBER PASSENGER OCCUPANT DASHBOARD LIGHT ALWAYS REMAINS ON. THIS MEANS THAT EVEN WITH THE SEAT OCCUPIED BY AN APPROPRIATE SIZED ADULT, THE LIGHT SAYS THE OCCUPANT IS NOT BEING 'SENSED'. ALSO, THE CONTROL PANEL ABOVE THE STEERING WHEEL HAS A RED FLASHING AIRBAG LIGHT. THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP SAYS THE ERROR CODE INDICATES A FAILURE IN THE PASSENGER SEAT OCCUPANT AIRBAG SENSOR. MY COST IS AT LEAST $2400 TO REPLACE THE PASSENGER SEAT. I AM UNABLE TO PAY THAT KIND OF MONEY. I AM HOPING FOR A NISSAN RECALL OR TECHNICAL BULLETIN ON THAT MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR. I SEE MANY OTHER YEARS OF THIS MAKE AND MODEL HAD THE ISSUE AND THE MANUFACTURER FIXED THEM AT NO COST. THAT IS WHAT I AM HOPING FOR. THIS CAR HAS NEVER HAD AN ACCIDENT. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS ESCL ISSUE IS A KNOW PROBLEM FOR WHICH NISSAN INITIALLY ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN AND EXTENDED WARRANTEE FOR THAT THEY HAVE SINCE WITHDRAWN. I FEEL THIS ISSUE SHOULD RESULT N A RECALL FOR SAFETY REASONS AS IT CAN PLACE A PERSON IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO START THE CAR.

THE ELECTRIC WHEEL LOCK SYSTEM FAILED RENDERING MY CAR NON OPERATIONAL. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE ONLINE IT IS A WELL DOCUMENTED PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS. THERE IS NO WARNING THAT IT WILL FAIL AND IS NOT DUE TO MAINTENANCE NEGLECT. WHEN IT FAILS IT DISABLES THE IGNITION SYSTEM TO THE CAR SO YOU CANNOT EVEN SWITCH TO THE ACCESSORY FUNCTION. IT CAN ALSO LEAVE THE STEERING WHEEL IN THE LOCKED POSITION MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT TO MOVE THE CAR. THIS OCCURS WHEN THE CAR IS PARKED AND TRY TO START IT.

I CONTACTED NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THE ISSUE AND INFORMED ME THEY HAD NOW OBTAINED AN UPGRADED PART TO PREVENT THIS ISSUE. IF THIS IS A KNOWN DEFECTIVE PART THAT PLACES OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES IN A POSITION OF BEING STRANDED AT ANY TIME IN ANY TYPES AREA IT THEN BECOMES A SAFETY ISSUE. NISSAN SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH TO INSURE THE SAFETY OF THEIR CUSTOMERS AND REPLACE THIS PART ON THE VEHICLES INVOLVED.

VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO SUNTRUP NISSAN AND THE REPAIR TOOK PLACE. I WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD GET REIMBURSED FOLLOWING A FAIR REVIEW OF MY CASE. THE CLAIM WAS IMMEDIATELY DENIED AND FOLLOWING A DISCUSSION WITH THE REGIONAL CONSUMER AFFAIRS SPECIALIST, MEGAN, IT WAS DENIED IN PART BECAUSE THE CAR HAD NOT BEEN TO A DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE SINCE 2011. I FEEL THAT I WAS MISLEAD AND MISTREATED AND GIVEN AN UNFAIR REVIEW BECAUSE I FAILED TO TAKE MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS. THE REASON FOR NOT TAKING THE VEHICLE TO A DEALERSHIP IS BECAUSE THE VEHICLE HAS NOT EVER REQUIRED ANY MAJOR REPAIR WORK IN THE PAST. INTERNET SEARCH REVEALED THAT HUNDREDS OF OTHER NISSAN OWNERS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH 2009 ALTIMA'S AND THERE WAS A PETITION TO GET THIS PART RECALLED.
I WAS LEAVING WORK AS I APPROACH MY VEHICLE WHICH WAS PARKED IN THE SECURED LOT; I USED MY SMART KEY TO UNLOCK THE DOOR IN WHICH IT DID. AND WHEN I ENTERED MY VEHICLE IT DID NOT START. THE INDICATOR ON THE DASH WAS SHOWING REPRESENTATION OF NO KEY IN THE VEHICLE BUT MY KEY COULD STILL LOCK & UNLOCK THE DOORS. I PROCEEDED TO CHANGE THE BATTERY TO MY SMART KEY 3X AND TO NO AVAIL DID THAT FIX MY SITUATION.

THE KEY FOB WORKED, AS IT WOULD LOCK AND UNLOCK THE DOORS, THE CAR JUST WOULDN'T START. WHEN I TRIED TO PUSH THE START BUTTON, A LITTLE ORANGE KEY LIGHT CAME ON. GOOGLED THE LIGHT... FOUND HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS THAT THE 2009/2010 ALTIMAS HAD ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK ISSUES, THAT NISSAN REFUSED TO COVER THE COST, AND THAT REPLACEMENT WAS VERY EXPENSIVE. HAD TO GET MY CAR TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER, WHO CONFIRMED I NEEDED ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK REPLACEMENT. THE COST WAS $1,033, NOT CHEAP AT ALL. SO DISGUSTED THERE IS SO MUCH INFORMATION ABOUT THIS BEING AN EXTREMELY COMMON PROBLEM IN THIS CAR, AND THERE NOT BEING A RECALL TO FIX IT OR AT LEAST COVER IT.

THEY THEN CALLED ME BACK AND SAID WE CANT DO ANYTHING ITS OUT OF WARRANTY. WHY MAKE ME PAY MORE THEN SAY OH NO WE CANT HELP YOU. SO I HAD TO WAIT FOR NISASAN TO TELL ME EITHER YES OR NO THEY WOULD HELP AFTER THEY SAID NO I CALLED DEALERSHIP TO GO AHEAD WITH WORK THEY NO LONGER HAD PART ANOTHER 2009 CAME IN WITH SAME PROBLEM. ELECTRIC STEERING WHEEL LOCK (ECSL), IS WELL-KNOWN DEFECT THAT IS KNOWN ACROSS ALL 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA, MAXIMA, AND EARLY 2010 350Z. I WAS FILLING UP AT A GAS STATION WHEN MY CAR DID NOT START. I WAS LEFT STRANDED AT A LOCATION THAT WAS UNSAFE LOCATION DUE TO THIS DEFECT. THIS LOCK WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO START MY VEHICLE NOR GO ON ACCESSORY MODE, THUS I WAS NOT ABLE TO ROLL UP MY WINDOWS. I WAS NOT INFORMED OF THIS DEFECT OR EXTENDED WARRANTY. MY EXTENDED WARRANTY EXPIRED LAST MONTH. NISSAN NORTH AMERICA REJECTED MY CLAIM TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM.
VEHICLE WAS PARKED, STATIONARY WHEN I WENT TO START IT. NOTHING HAPPENED WHEN START BUTTON WAS PRESSED. THE CAR WAS RECOGNIZING THE KEY FOB, DUE TO THE FACT THAT WHEN I DIDN'T HAVE IT, IT WAS SAYING NO KEY. HOWEVER WOULD NOT START EVEN WHEN FOB WAS PRESENT. CONTACTED NISSAN SERVICE DEPARTMENT, THEY SAID IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM, AFTER GOOGLING THE ISSUE I WAS SURPRISED AT HOW MANY SHEER NUMBERS OF THE SAME EXACT THING WAS HAPPENING. $1200 LATER, MY CAR IS FIXED JUST BECAUSE OF A FAULTY STEERING COLUMN LOCK, WHICH EVEN THE PRIVATE MECHANIC STATED WAS A BIG PROBLEM, ADDING THAT NISSAN RESPONDED BY CHANGING THE LOCK ON THE 2010 AND UP MODELS, HOWEVER NOT COMPENSATING ANY CURRENT OWNERS. MECHANIC ALSO ADVISED THAT THE PART IS SO FAULTY THAT IT WILL GO OUT AGAIN IN TIME. IM TAKING CAR BACK TO DEALER THE CAR HAD 50K ON IT WHEN I PURCHASED THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED UNDER WARRANT I CANT AFFORD 1200 BUCKS IF NOT FIXED IM NOT PAYING FOR A LEMON CAR
WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE BRAND NEW IN 2009. ON 11/18/2015, MY WIFE BECAME STRANDED IN A SHOPPING CENTER PARKING LOT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. AFTER RESEARCH ONLINE, WE DISCOVERED THAT THE PROBLEM IS THE STEERING LOCK MECHANISM. WHEN THE MECHANISM FAILS, IT GENERATES A FAULT IN THE COMPUTER THAT DISABLES THE VEHICLE. NISSAN HAS KNOWN OF THE PROBLEM FOR SOME TIME AND EXTENDED THE WARRANTY, BUT DID NOT NOTIFY OWNERS. THERE ARE HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ONLINE. THE FAILED PART IS 48700-JF00A. LET ME STRESS THAT NISSAN HAS KNOWN OF THIS PART DEFECTIVENESS FOR YEARS, BUT HAS NOT BEEN PROACTIVE TO AVOID OWNERS FROM BEING STRANDED. THE VEHICLE WAS OBVIOUSLY STATIONARY WHEN THIS PROBLEM WAS REALIZED.

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE DUE TO THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,000.
ESCL LOCKED UP WITH NO WARNING. CAR WOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO START AFTER GETTING GAS BECAUSE THE SYSTEM THOUGHT THE ESCL WAS ENGAGED. STRANDED AT A GAS STATION PUMP FOR 3 HOURS UNTIL A TOW COULD BE DONE TO A DEALER.

AFTER SEARCHING ONLINE I REALIZED THE "IGNITION STEERING WHEEL LOCK FAILURE" IS EXTREMELY COMMON WITH 2009-2010 NISSAN VEHICLES. FILED A CASE WITH NISSAN TO HAVE THIS COVERED AS THEY PUT OUT AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THIS PART. THE CASE WAS DENIED BECAUSE THEY SAID THE WARRANTY EXPIRED IN MARCH '15. I NOW HAVE TO PAY $1008.21 THAT OTHER CUSTOMERS DIDN'T B/C THEIR ISSUE FELL WITHIN THE WARRANTY TIME. IT MAKES NO SENSE THAT SOME CUSTOMERS ARE BEING COVERED WHILE OTHER ARE NOT B/C THEIR ISSUES HAPPENED EARLIER. NISSAN HAS CLEARLY RECOGNIZED THIS PART AS AN ISSUE AND ARE NOW NOT TREATING ALL CUSTOMER'S FAIRLY. THEY SAID THAT I SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED SOMETHING IN THE MAIL ABOUT THIS AND IT WAS ALL OVER THEIR WEBSITE. MY 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA HAD A DEFECTIVE ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK UNIT THAT RENDERED THE VEHICLE UNSAFE AND UNRELIABLE FOR MY WIFE AS DRIVER AND HER PASSENGERS. SHE HAD TO GET STRANDED AND HAVE IT TOWED BEFORE THE THIRD DEALER WE SAW ABOUT THE PROBLEM COULD DIAGNOSE THE ROOT CAUSE. SHE WAS IN AN UNSAFE LOCATION THREE HOURS FROM WHERE I WAS LOCATED WHEN THE PART MALFUNCTIONED AND FEARED FOR HER SAFETY. THE SERVICE ADVISOR SAID THIS MODEL HAS HAD SEVERAL ISSUES IN ITS HISTORY WITH THIS PARTICULAR PART TO THE POINT THAT NISSAN EXTEND THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY UNTIL APRIL OF 2015 - ALL ACCORDING TO A SERVICE ADVISOR AT THE THIRD DEALERSHIP I WENT TO. WHEN MALFUNCTIONING, THIS UNIT RENDERS THE VEHICLE ABSOLUTELY MOTIONLESS AND PRESENTS AN IMMEDIATE UNSAFE AND HAZARDOUS SITUATION TO THE DRIVER AND ALL PASSENGERS. THE DEALER SUGGESTED I CONTACT NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS WHICH I DID AND SPOKE WITH A REPRESENTATIVE IN FRANKLIN, TENNESSEE, WHO DENIED MY REQUEST FOR REIMBURSEMENT OF THE COST OF THE PART. I DID NOT REQUEST TOTAL REIMBURSEMENT AND THOUGHT WE COULD WORK THIS OUT IN GOOD FAITH, BUT TO NO AVAIL AND MY GESTURE WAS DISMISSED. NISSAN KNOWS THIS PART IS DEFECTIVE AND EVEN EXTENDED THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY. ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE ADVISOR, THERE HAVE BEEN PROBLEMS WITH THIS PART AND IT SHOULD BE RECALLED NATIONWIDE ON ALL APPLICABLE VEHICLES. THIS MAY BE THE REASON WHY NISSAN EXTENDED THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY ON THIS PARTICULAR PART BECAUSE THEY KNEW IT WAS DEFECTIVE AND PROBLEMATIC. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IT COULD LEAVE MY WIFE STRANDED RANDOMLY AT ANYTIME OR ANY PLACE THAT SHE DRIVES THE CAR. NISSAN HAS EXTENDED THE WARRANTY, BUT THIS FAILED 6 MONTHS AFTER IT EXPIRED... THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL

THERE WAS NO UNUSUAL DRAW ON BATTERY DURING STOP EITHER. STOPPED AT NISSAN DEALER TO CHECK THE STARTING SYSTEM AND EVERYTHING CHECKED OUT NORMAL. SERVICE TECH RECALLED THIS PROBLEM WITH MY PARTICULAR YEAR AND MODEL, AND SAID A BRAKE SWITCH AND SUB HARNESS ASSEMBLY SHOULD BE REPLACED, BUT AT $800+ COST I DECLINED OFFER. PURCHASED A NEW BATTERY LATER AND AS OF THIS DATE I HAVE NOT HAD A PROBLEM, BUT EVERY TIME I START IT I CROSS MY FINGERS.

APPARENTLY BECAUSE IT IS NOT DEEMED A "SAFETY ISSUE" THE NHTSA IS NOT MANDATING A RECALL. HOWEVER, THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS MY DOG AND NIECE WERE LOCKED IN THE CAR AND WE COULD NOT OPEN IT BECAUSE THIS DEFECT SHUT DOWN THE ENTIRE ELECTRONIC SYSTEM. MAKE NISSAN REPLACE THIS DEFECTIVE PART BEFORE SOMEONE IS INJURED OR KILLED.

MY WARRANTY FOR THIS PART EXPIRED IN OCTOBER 2014, BUT IT WAS UNKNOWN TO ME SINCE MY FIRST ISSUE WAS MAY 2015. NISSAN DEALER ESTIMATES $1016 TO REPAIR.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN ANY ACCIDENT NOR EXPOSED TO EXCESSIVE WATER/FIRE/ETC AROUND THIS TIME. WHEN I HAD IT EVALUATED AT THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP, I WAS TOLD THE DOOR ACTUATORS HAD BROKEN, BUT GIVEN NO EXPLANATION AS TO HOW/WHY THIS WOULD HAPPEN FOR ALL 4 DOORS AT THE SAME TIME. DUE TO THE HIGH COST OF REPAIR (QUOTED $250 PER DOOR), I HAVE NOT HAD THESE FIXED. NOW, NEARLY 9-10 MONTHS LATER, THE LOCKS REMAIN COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE TO THE KEYLESS ENTRY REMOTE AND THE POWER LOCK BUTTON ON THE DRIVER'S DOOR, AND MUST BE MANUALLY LOCKED/UNLOCKED. *TR

AS A RESULT OF THIS KNOWLEDGE, NISSAN PLACED THAT PART UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY. THAT HOWEVER DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE ENOUGH, SINCE MANY OF THE ISSUES DON'T BEGIN UNTIL AFTER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY IS UP, AS IN OUR CASE. THE COST OF THE REPAIR IS APPROXIMATELY $1,100.00. I CONTACTED BOTH THE DEALER AND NISSAN DIRECTLY FOR ASSISTANCE, ASKING THAT THEY COVER THE PART, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY HAD JUST EXPIRED IN AUGUST. OF COURSE, THEY CHOSE NOT TO HELP IN ANYWAY. IT'S MY UNDERSTANDING THAT WHEN THIS PART FAILS IT DOES NOT GIVE MUCH IF ANY WARNING. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO PINE BELT NISSAN, 111 HIGHWAY 36, KEYPORT, NJ, 07735-1424, WHO FIXED THE CAR AND RECOMMENDED I CONTACT NISSAN CORPORATE FOR ANY REIMBURSEMENT. CORPORATE NISSAN, UNDER CONFIRMATION NUMBER 315521 (SPOKE TO RAVEN), STATED THAT "THEY ARE NOT IN A POSITION TO PAY FOR THE PARTS", EVEN AFTER I TOLD THEM THAT I WOULD PAY THE LABOR. NISSAN KNOWINGLY HAS PUT OUT A DEFECTIVE BRAKE IGNITION SWITCH THAT COULD CAUSE THE CAR TO FAIL (NOT START) AT ANY TIME, AND WILL NOT WORK WITH THE CUSTOMER FINANCIALLY TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PART WITH A GOOD ONE. ONE ARTICLE SUGGESTED TO MOVE THE ADJUSTABLE STEERING UP AND DOWN VIGOROUSLY . I RELEASED THE STEERING BUTTON UNDERNEATH THE STEERING AND MOVED THE STEERING UP AND DOWN. PUSHED THE IGNITION BUTTON AND THE ENGINE STARTED. DROVE TO THE DEALER WHO REFUSED TO DO CORRECT THE PROBLEM STATING THAT AT THE TIME THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE EVERYTHING WAS FINE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 95,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 125,000.
THREE MONTHS AFTER INSTALLATION OF A NEW (DEALER PROVIDED) BATTERY, THE POSITIVE TERMINAL AND CABLE HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO HEAVY CORROSION. THE ORIGINAL CAR BATTERY FAILED BECAUSE OF HEAVY CORROSION AROUND THE POSITIVE TERMINAL AS WELL. THE DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THAT THE HARNESS AND CABLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED AT THE TIME OF BATTERY REPLACEMENT AND DO NOT KNOW WHY THIS WASN'T RECOMMENDED. THEY STATED THAT THESE BATTERIES ROUTINELY VENT EXCESS GAS THAT SHOULD CONDENSE INTO THE BATTERY COMPARTMENT. THEY DID NOT ADDRESS THE ISSUE THAT HEAVY CORROSION RE-ACCUMULATED IN A VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME (SHORTER THAN RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE INTERVALS FOR THE CAR). FURTHER, THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME I HAVE HEARD OF AN ALTIMA BATTERY ISSUE AS MY SISTER HAD TO REPLACE HER BATTERY TWICE AS WELL. I WOULD LIKE THE NHTSA TO INVESTIGATE IF THIS IS A REPETITIVE ISSUE WITH THESE BATTERIES AS THIS COULD LEAD TO A SAFETY PROBLEM IF THE CAR WERE TO SPONTANEOUSLY SHUT DOWN DURING DRIVING DUE TO BATTERY MALFUNCTION. *TR

EVERY COMMAND ON REMOTE SEEM TO WORK EXCEPT THAT THE CAR DIDN'T RECOGNIZE THE REMOTE TO START THE CAR. THERE WERE "NO KEY" SYMBOLS ON THE DASH. THE CAR JUST RETURNED FROM A HUNDRED MILE TRIP. WHILE I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE TWO ALARMS WERE GOING OF ON MY DASH BOARD. I HAD NO CLUE WHAT EITHER ONE MEANT BUT BOTH INCLUDE A KEY TYPE ALARM. SINCE THEN I COULD ONLY START MY VEHICLE ONCE AND AT THAT TIME I TOOK IT TO A DEALERSHIP, WITH MY FRIEND SO I HAD A RIDE BACK, AND I TOLD THEM I WAS HAVING TROUBLE STARTING MY CAR. THIS PAST SATURDAY 2/8/14 AT APPROXIMATELY 9PM I RAN TO THE STORE. AFTER SHOPPING WHEN GETTING BACK INTO MY CAR IT WOULD NOT CRANK; IT'S LIKE THE CAR DID NOT RECOGNIZE THE KEY. STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED, BRAKE WAS STIFF AND RED KEY LIGHT APPEARED ON DASHBOARD. I TRIED EVERYTHING, NOTHING. I HAD TO CALL MY HUSBAND, TO COME GET ME. LUCKILY I DIDN'T GO FAR!! WE HAD THE CAR TOWED MONDAY MORNING TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED AND WERE INFORMED IT WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE SENSOR IN THE IGNITION RECOGNIZING THE KEY FOB AND THAT IT WOULD BE COVERED UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE PART TO FIX THIS PROBLEM IS HOWEVER ON BACK ORDER AND THEY CANNOT GIVE ME A DEFINITE ANSWER AS TO WHEN IT WILL BE RECEIVED? THEY CALLED ME AFTER HAVING MY CAR THERE ABOUT AN HOUR AND A HALF JUST TO TELL ME THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO ORDER THE PART AND I WOULD HAVE TO LEAVE THE CAR THERE FOR UP TO A WEEK. I DROVE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE TO BE A FAULTY BREAK SWITCH. SINCE THE CAR WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY (36 MONTHS/ 36000 MILES) I HAD TO PAY $173.00 TO FIX THIS ISSUE WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE IF I HAD NOT COMPLAINED THAT THE DEALERSHIP WAS CHARGING 2 HOURS LABOR AND DIAGNOSIS FOR A 1 HOUR JOB. I SEARCHED THE INTERNET FOR POSSIBLE PROBLEMS AND FOUND NUMEROUS REPORTS OF THE SAME SITUATION. THE PROBLEM REPORTED WAS A FAILED STEERING LOCK UNIT. I CONTACTED THE NISSAN DEALER AND THEY INDICATED WE WOULD NEED TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO THEIR SHOP. THEY FOUND THAT THE STEERING LOCK CONTROL MODULE DID IN FACT NEED TO BE REPLACED. THEY MENTIONED THEY HAVE HAD AT LEAST 15 INSTANCES OF THIS SAME PROBLEM AT THEIR SHOP ALONE SINCE THE WEATHER TURNED COLD THIS WINTER. WE SPECIFICALLY PURCHASED THIS CAR NEW IN 2009 SO THAT OUR TEENS WOULD HAVE A DEPENDABLE CAR TO DRIVE. WE DID NOT WANT THEM STUCK SOMEWHERE UNABLE TO GET HOME, ESPECIALLY IN THE WINTER. HAVING THIS PART FAILING IN UNDER 23,000 MILES IS VERY POOR. I HAVE HAD NISSAN VEHICLES WITH OVER 100,000 MILES AND NOT HAD A BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH FAILURE! A FEW DAYS AFTER THIS INCIDENT, WHEN TRYING TO START CAR WITH KEYLESS IGNITION SYSTEM, IT TOOK NEARLY 30 MINUTES TO START. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO JERK AND EXHIBIT TROUBLE MOVING FORWARD. ALSO, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED OF A FAILURE WITHIN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THE SYSTEM WAS REPAIRED. APPROXIMATELY FIVE MONTHS LATER, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AND WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED (CONTACT COULD NOT RECALL THE DIAGNOSIS); AN UNKNOWN REPAIR WAS PERFORMED. APPROXIMATELY FOUR MONTHS LATER, THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. THE DURING THE FAILURE, THE ANTI-THEFT LIGHT BEGAN ILLUMINATED AND AFTER REPEATED ATTEMPTS, THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE STARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE IPDM FAILED; THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA HAS AN ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE DESIGN FLAW. THE HEADLIGHTS TURN OFF AUTOMATICALLY AFTER 5 MINUTES, APPARENTLY THE BATTERY RAPIDLY DRAINS EVEN AFTER THE AUTO-HEADLIGHT SHUTOFF WITH THE CAR TURNED OFF. I PURCHASED A 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA 2500S DECEMBER 7TH, 2008, THE CAR DIED JANUARY 23RD, 2009. I DROVE THE CAR FROM HOME TO WORK IN THE RAIN. THE CAR WAS PARKED FOR AROUND 10 HOURS, AFTER RETURNING TO DRIVE HOME, THE CAR WAS DEAD - THE KEYLESS ENTRY DIDN'T WORK, USING THE MECHANICAL KEY TO ENTER THE CAR, THE START BUTTON DIDN'T WORK. AAA COULDN'T TOW THE CAR DUE TO A HEIGHT BEAM BLOCKING THE TOW TRUCK - THE CAR COULDN'T BE MOVED BECAUSE THE CAR WAS FROZEN IN PARK DUE TO THE DEAD ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - THE TRUNK COULDN'T BE OPENED WITH THE SWITCH ON THE TRUNK OR BY THE SWITCH ON THE DASH. AAA JUMPED THE BATTERY AND THE CAR HAS RUN FOR 3 DAYS NOW WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. THE BATTERY WAS SO FULLY DRAINED THAT THE RADIO NEEDED TO BE REPROGRAMMED WITH THE TIME AND STATIONS. THIS RAISES QUESTIONS OF HOW MANY SAFETY SYSTEMS RELYING ON THE BATTERY WILL FAIL - FOR EXAMPLE THE CAR CAN ROLL AWAY IF SHUTOFF IN NEUTRAL - IF THE BATTERY DISCHARGES, IS THE SHIFT GEAR THEN FROZEN IN NEUTRAL? THE RAPID DISCHARGE OF THE BATTERY WITH THE CAR OFF IS A DESIGN FLAW WHICH LEAVES THE CONSUMER STRANDED, POTENTIALLY IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION. *TR
