Filed: Mar 2026

Your 2018 Kia Sportage consumed oil excessively, which Kia didn't warn owners about, leading to complete engine failure at 117,000 miles despite regular maintenance and oil changes. Kia refused to replace the engine even with maintenance records provided, and their customer service was unresponsive for months while your car sat in the lot. This vehicle is part of a class action lawsuit related to the engine design defect.

Your engine failed at 113,000 miles due to low compression in the first cylinder. You had been experiencing excessive oil consumption since around 60,000 miles, which likely contributed to this failure. The engine will need to be rebuilt or replaced, which is a major repair.

NHTSA #: 11721192

Your vehicle experienced engine failure while driving, with the check engine light coming on, RPMs jumping to 4,000, and rough chugging before it stalled. A mechanic diagnosed a failed piston and determined the engine needs replacement or major repair. This will likely require engine removal and either a complete engine replacement or a full rebuild.

Your engine stalled suddenly while driving at 55 mph on the highway during rush hour, nearly causing a rear-end collision. After the stall, your vehicle couldn't accelerate past 30 mph. This issue may be related to known problems with Theta II engines that have been subject to recalls. Resolving this will likely require a full engine diagnostic and possibly engine repair or replacement under recall.

Filed: Dec 2025

Your 2018 Kia Sportage's engine computer detected a warning code indicating excessive wear on the connecting rod bearings and put the engine into limp mode to prevent damage. This is part of a known issue with 2.4L Theta II engines that can lead to engine seizure. Your vehicle may be eligible for a free engine replacement under a settlement, but Kia's website incorrectly says your vehicle doesn't qualify. You should contact Kia immediately to clarify your warranty coverage before continuing to drive, as further operation risks sudden engine failure.

Your vehicle's engine has been documented to have issues that have caused engine compartment fires in other vehicles of the same make and model. You should have your engine inspected immediately by a qualified mechanic to identify any potential fire hazards. The repair may involve inspecting engine components, fuel lines, and electrical connections for damage or defects.

Your check engine light keeps showing error code P1326 even after you replaced the knock sensor. Your mechanic suspects the problem may be internal engine damage (rod bearings) and recommended a full engine replacement. Your vehicle's year, make, and model are part of a Kia recall for this issue, but your specific VIN isn't listed—even though you're experiencing the same symptoms. You've also noticed your engine stalling and losing power while driving.

Your car has been losing 5-7 quarts of oil between oil changes due to an ongoing leak. After having spark plugs and oil seals replaced in 2025, your engine's 4th cylinder began misfiring repeatedly—an oil wash provided only temporary relief, and replacing all four ignition coils didn't fix the problem. The Kia dealer suspects the engine is burning oil internally, which explains the high oil consumption, and believes the engine should be covered under warranty.

Your engine is consuming oil faster than normal. After an oil change, your low oil pressure warning light came on with a "Service Engine" message and a dinging sound while driving. The dealer added oil, but the warning returned the next day. The dealer started an oil consumption test but wants you to pay for additional testing to diagnose the problem, which you declined. Your engine may have internal wear, a leak, or a defect causing the oil loss.

Your 2018 Kia Sportage may not accelerate properly when you press the gas pedal, and you might notice the KSDS warning light turning on. You may also see higher than normal oil consumption, and the problem can happen again after restarting the vehicle. The dealer found that your camshaft needs to be replaced to fix the acceleration issue.

Your engine is burning excessive oil, which is being pushed into the catalytic converter and clogging it. This causes exhaust fumes to enter your cabin, forcing you to open windows for fresh air, and your engine isn't running properly. Even after replacing the catalytic converter, fumes still occasionally enter the cabin because the engine continues consuming excessive oil. The root cause—the engine's oil consumption problem—needs to be fixed to fully resolve the issue.

Your engine is burning through oil much faster than normal — consuming about one quart every 1000 miles instead of the manufacturer's expected rate. This excessive oil consumption has been confirmed by your Kia dealership through multiple tests and is believed to be caused by fouled piston rings, which is a known issue for this engine. If the oil level gets too low while you're driving, your engine could fail and leave you stranded in traffic or bad weather, creating a safety hazard.

NHTSA #: 11696475

Filed: Oct 2025

Your engine is consuming oil at an unusually high rate — burning more than a quart in less than 1,000 miles — and your low oil warning light has come on. This excessive oil burn started around 100,000 miles on your vehicle. The issue likely involves internal engine wear or a leak that will need diagnosis and repair, possibly including engine sealing work or internal component replacement.

Your engine is consuming oil faster than normal, and the dealership is requiring you to pay for an oil consumption test and combustion chamber cleaning before considering an engine replacement. The dealership says they'll only replace the engine if it seals up while you're driving, which creates a safety risk for you and other drivers. You're seeing low oil warning lights and check engine lights related to this issue, and Kia has denied warranty coverage despite a prior class action lawsuit involving the same problem.

Your 2018 Kia Sportage's check engine light came on and the engine went into limp mode (reduced power) at around 120,000 miles during normal driving. A diagnostic scan showed a knock sensor detection system code that may indicate engine bearing issues. Your car now runs with significantly reduced power, making it unsafe for highway driving, and your dealership confirmed there is no active recall for this problem.

Excessive oil consumption and the engine is part of a "silent" recall. I would like my engine to be replaced before it blows up and causes serious injury or death. I had an oil change done because my engine oil level was showing low on the dipstick. I had just had an oil change about 2 months prior so it was not due but I thought that maybe there was an oil leak . On the way to my mechanic shop the check engine light came on so I had them to check it out. There were no visible oil leaks and they said they oil was extremely low. They did the full oil change and told me to bring it back 200 miles later to see if there was any oil lost. 200 miles later the car was down an entire quart of oil. My mechanic suggested I call Kia to advise them of the engine oil consumption issue. His words. I called Kia and was advised to bring it into the dealership for a diagnostic and consumption test. I am bringing it tomorrow morning but I don't know what will happen after that. I see the recall for other models with this same issue but not for my model.

Really need help with this. I had two warranty on the car and the oil consumption leak is excluded from both. How convenient.

I am writing regarding the KIA recall #SC336. About 6 months ago I noticed my 2018 KIA Sportage w 139,000 started using a lil oil. Then 3 days ago it starting cutting out & ck engine light came on. I called mechanic & took it into his shop. He put a coder reader on it and it said, misfire on #2. He did a compression test and there was 0 pressure on #2 cylinder. He then took a camera and went down and there is a hole in #2 piston. He recommends a new engine. He had me call the KIA Customer Care # however, they basically told me the deadline for class action suit expired and I had no remedy with them. My car was not acting up at the end of said deadline so, why would I have filed a claim?! I seen this info on recall #SC336 as to oil consumption & no compression in '20-'23 Souls and Seltos. I have also seen several mechanics forums speaking about my year of Sportage with compression issues. I am a poor lady on disability and still owe $11,000 on this car w no extended warranty coverage. Is there anything I can do in order to get KIA to include my vehicle in an engine recall ? I have now obtained a loan for the $4,800 rebuilt engine I just purchased from Auto Zone! Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

first time I had an issue was in August 2023, my check engine light came on, the car was losing power and sputtering. when I would start the car, it would literally sound like a truck. come to find out, the 3rd cylinder was misfiring due to the piston rings being worn and possibly the coils being faulty and an engine replacement was needed. after going back and forth with the dealer (they had my car for almost a month) the engine was finally replaced. fast forward to last week, it started happening again. same cylinder, same issue. now my car is back in the shop waiting for a new engine (#2). my thing is this....did they use a rebuilt engine, or maybe just fixed the old one and call it new. either way, there is no reason I should need a new engine this close to having it repaired. and judging by the complaints I have been reading, the engines on all 2018 Sportages need to be recalled.

The contact owned a 2018 Kia Sportage. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, he observed black smoke billowing from the engine compartment, after which the vehicle lost motive power, prompting him and his wife to evacuate the vehicle in the middle of the roadway. While attempting to retrieve important belongings from the vehicle, the contact stated that he heard what sounded to be an explosion within the engine compartment, causing him to fall backward and sprain his ankle. Moments later the front end of the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames. Local emergency services arrived and were able to extinguish the fire. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and needed a total loss by the contact insurance provider. A fire report was filed. A police report was filed, but no injuries were reported. The contact later transported himself to an appointment with his primary care physician after experiencing physiological symptoms consistent with a cardiovascular event and was treated for angina. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V137000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic); the VIN was included, but the vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The contact was informed that the manufacturer intended to inspect the vehicle but stated that the inspection had yet to take place. The failure mileage was 55,000.

My 2018 Kia Sportage was burning oil - had to add oil every week. On [XXX] I was driving on the [XXX] and my check engine light came on and the car slowed down. I got to the shoulder this was early in the morning I searched for a dealership and there was one 1 mile away It was 6 am when I arrived to the dealership and had to wait until they opened. And went to DCH Kia and eventually told me it was a cylinder that was blown. Why? Honestly I feel like this may have been a “false” diagnosis since the oil was burning up. I had extended coverage but they said it didn’t qualify for any engine recall. I had to get my entire engine replaced and was out of my car for over a month. Which I’m assuming the cylinder blew because of the oils burning. This should never have happened. And is truly frustrating. Especially when I am a loyal Kia owner and have never had any problems like this before. I was completely overwhelmed with the amount I was charged and that I even had to replace my entire engine and having to get a rental car the entire time as well. I’m noticing from the other comments a lot of oil burning and engine trouble in my make and model. Fortunately I did not get hit on the freeway when my car decided to stop. Unknown, my Kia has been burning oil there is no oil leak and I had to get my oil changed every 2k miles. Then one day it started shaking on the freeway making noise and I had to exit 30+ miles from my city found the closest Kia dealership I took it there and they said I don’t qualify for the engine recall because it is a cylinder my car is a 2018 it’s 5 years old! There is no reason it should be having problems like this. I have now been out of a car and with a rental for a month now not only do I have to pay to replace my entire engine I have to pay for a rental. Oil shouldn’t be burning up. I’ve never had this happen before. And when I googled it it is a common issue in Kia’s same with cylinder issues. Why would this be happening. Burning oils leads to destruction. Even though I am forced to have oils put in or go to a shop because there is little oil in my car by 1500miles when it should be able to go 5k miles I’m beyond frustrated.

I am being told my 5 year old Kia Sportage is going to need a new engine. It does have 122k miles, but other than that, I have never had an issue. After reading complaints made by hundreds of other Kia Sportage owners it seems there is a common denominator. A car made with a defective engine. I have been to the mechanic two times, for a routine oil change and have been told there is no oil in my car, even though both times they have stated there are no leaks. I need a solution for this that doesn’t cost me 4-10k on a new engine. When this issues should have never been a thing.

Purchased this vehicle from CarMax on 7/2/22 with 32,888 miles. During the next 4 months, we had to add 5.5 quarts of oil as the oil light kept coming on. The car was virtually out of oil by the time the oil light came on. Researching on the internet showed that millions of Kia cars apparently have this issue due to defective engines. Took the car to Greenway Kia on November 28 with approximately 40,000 miles. They performed the required tests, which proved the engine was excessively burning oil. However, Kia denied the warranty claim due to a lack of historical oil change records, which obviously we can't produce since we aren't the original owner. Now I'm left with no recourse and a vehicle that isn't safe to drive. Given that most of the Kia engines of this vintage have this issue, they should be required to recall the vehicles rather than hide behind the small print in their warranty.

We own a 2018 Kia Sportage. We never had any problems with it, UNTIL NOW. I Drove it to work one morning, and was on the way home and suddenly without warning, no lights, or indicators came on, and the car started to shake, and lost full throttle response in the MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. Immediately pulled over! Tried starting the car again, but the car was not cranking. We had to tow our car home, and was told our engine had to be replaced. We were checking out the engine, and notice there was a hole in it. Now keep in mind, we've never had any problems with our KIA until now. So it was odd. We checked the N.H.T.S.A and the KIA has 2 recalls, and we were not aware of them. We called the manufacturer to see if they called replaced the engine but they denied us. So we're stuck without a car.

I'VE CHECKED WITH KIA AND THEY'RE AWARE OF THE ISSUE BUT STATE THAT THERE IS CURRENTLY NO RECALL OR ALERT AS TO WHAT EXACTLY THE PROBLEM IS OR HOW TO SOLVE IT. DEALER SAID THEY HAD NEVER HAD ANY OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS. ALSO REPORTED ACCELERATES SLOWLY WHEN SETTING AT A STOP LIGHT. THEY CANNOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG,

2018 KIA SPORTAGE. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO ENGINE FAILURE. *LD CONSUMER SENT ADDITIONAL CORRESPONDENCE. *LD THE CONSUMER STATED THE DEALER DENIED ASSISTANCE WITH THE FAILURE DUE TO AN AFTER MARKET OIL PLUG BEING INSTALLED IN THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE 3RD PARTY WHO CHANGED THE OIL SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FAILURE. THE ENGINE FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. METAL SHAVINGS WERE FOUND IN THE OIL. *JS

I PICKED UP A BRAND NEW KIA SPORTAGE SX TURBO AWD WITH 34 MILES ON IT TODAY. IT WAS DRIVING KIND OF HESITANTLY, SEEMING LIKE IT WAS MISFIRING. ABOUT 30 MILES LATER, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED KIA CUSTOMER SERVICE AS I HAVE AN ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM. THEY ADVISED TO TAKE IT TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP. I TOOK MY CAR TO SUMMIT PLACE KIA IN AUBURN HILLS WHERE THE INITIAL DIAGNOSIS BASED ON A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT READING WAS AN IMPROPER FUEL/AIR MIXTURE IN CYLINDER 2. I AM NOT SURE WHAT PROTOCOL WILL BE FOLLOWED FROM THIS POINT OR WHAT ACTIONS WILL BE NEEDED TO RECTIFY THIS ISSUE. HOWEVER, IT IS APPARENT THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH KIA'S GDI TURBO ENGINES.
