Your driver's side door latch may have broken or fallen apart inside the door. When you tried to open the door from the inside, you heard something fall and the door wouldn't open—you had to use the outside handle instead. The dealer inspected it but wouldn't repair it without manufacturer approval, which never came. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the interior door latch assembly and possibly other internal door components.
