2017 Kia Soul Engine Problems

You heard a ticking noise from the engine, and a mechanic diagnosed it as total engine failure. The mechanic noted that this problem is common in 2017 Kia Souls, though your VIN wasn't included in the recall. Despite regular maintenance and less than 80,000 miles, your engine has failed. While driving on the highway, your engine lost power and acceleration without any warning lights, then the oil light came on after 20 miles. You added oil and the lights went off, but after driving just 5 more miles, the engine lost power again, started knocking loudly, and all warning lights came back on. The engine has 103,000 miles and has been well maintained, suggesting a possible internal engine bearing failure that may require major engine repair or replacement.

While driving, the vehicle suffered a sudden and total engine seizure and loss of power (stalling), creating a life-threatening hazard in traffic . A certified Kia technician diagnosed a seized short block, multi-cylinder misfires (P0300-P0304), and a hole in the exhaust valve. This failure is identical to the defects in Recall SC176 and the Engine Litigation II Settlement.

To Whom It May Concern, I am submitting this complaint to report that a Kia dealership of garden grove, ca falsely recorded a safety recall as “completed” on my 2019 Kia Soul Upon review from another kia dealer, I discovered that the recall repair — essential to prevent engine failure — was never actually performed.

The issue involves the engine’s piston rings, which appear to be malfunctioning and causing excessive oil consumption. This has LED to oil entering the combustion chamber and likely damaging the catalytic converter. The engine began consuming oil rapidly between oil changes — far more than normal — and has since developed engine knocking and performance issues.

- Engine failure/seizure with rod bearing failure! Yes, vehicle is available for inspection upon request. - Myself and my wife were driving through a busy intersection light when the engine failed and went into limp mode (Engine Control System) causing an abrupt stop in the middle of the intersection which forced multiple cars to have to slow down and break to not hit us.

I purchased my car new from the dealer in August of 2017; at 40,000 I started having an excessive oil consumption issue. I took it repeatedly to the dealer for remedy under the warranty. They examined and performed services that failed to remedy the issue.

The Kia Soul is burning engine oil. I have to add an extra pint of oil every month. This known engine defect will one day damage the engine and may cause an accident.

The engine failed on an Arizona highway, at night, while my daughter was driving from Arizona to California. My daughter's safety, and that of her friend who was also in the car, was put at risk due to the near inability to move the vehicle off of the highway and onto the shoulder. I was driving down the interstate and my car made a loud noise, so I pulled over. Smoke started pouring out then it was immediately in flames. No prior issues.

Bought 2017 Kia Soul from Carmax Jan 2021 w/MaxCare extended warranty. All maintenance had been done as scheduled and no problems no warning lights. At approx 79K miles, on 9-14-22 , noticed a slight knocking sound.

On Tuesday July 27 2021, we noticed that the oil light was flickering at idle on our 2017 Kia Soul. We called a dealership and they recommended that we have the car towed to their service department. We received confirmation that the car arrived at the dealership at 1.32 pm on Tuesday July 27 2021.

My KIA Soul did not have any warning lights on or strange sounds/issues when I began driving on the highway on 6/5/21 with my 12 year old special needs son. A short time after we entered the highway I began to notice a strange knocking sound and it felt like the car was struggling to maintain speed.

My son bought a 2017 kia soul less than a year ago with about 57,000 miles. On tuesday oct 11, 2020 the car kept stalling when driving and then wouldn't start. Also, the oil pressure light kept flashing so he checked the oil.

05/18/2024 (Saturday) I was driving home from my parents house. After approximately 7 miles from leaving their home the check engine light came on. The car became sluggish and seamed to not have a lot of power.

Last year check engine light came on & It was time to get my oil change, So you know when they connect the car to that reader well it came back It was my catalytic converter And so I was like that's really expensive ,check engine light ended up going off then on. Now mind you I always keep up the maintenance on this vehicle.

On 3/22/24, my 2017 Kia Soul started making a backfiring noises while I was on the interstate. Then I heard a loud noise and the car starting losing speed and finally just quit after about a 1/4 of a mile. I had to have car towed to repair shop.

I was headed to a family BBQ on memorial day in my 2017 Kia Soul that I have had about 2 years and is a certified pre-owned vehicle and did not notice any abnormalities or sounds prior to the incident. I went to partk and noticed that my check engine light popped on but thought nothing of it as my gas cap lock was broken and so I turned off the vehicle.

Driver was on freeway when car lost acceleration. Driver pulled over at first exit when the dash flashed various lights and shut down. Driver attempted to start the car but was unable to do so -- there was smoking from the engine so Driver had the vehicle towed to shop.

While at work, driving, and in acceleration, the engine would start knocking. On my way home, the knocking got louder. Half way home, the engine stalled out on a major highway and I had to coast the vehicle through en exit ramp to stop on a service road.

Just had an oil change done a couple months ago, the two previous oil changes I had, the merchanics advised me that the engine had less oil than it should for how little miles had been put on it. took it in today since it started making a "ticking" noise, and was informed that there was hardly any oil in the engine, and that was the cause. it had only been driven 2000 miles since the last change.

The Kia has been using oil sind 78000 miles I've been going to dealership now going on 2 years for issues with the engine. Feb 2024 they put a catalytic converter on. On [XXX] I called told them check engine light was flashing and was rattling and running rough Nick Sheets told me to bring it back on Saturday the [XXX] at 10:00 am.

I HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE OIL LEAKS. I was told that the oil was leaking from my plug from Precision Tune Auto Care 312 W. Mooresville NC.

The vehicle had driven fine day long and we had just done an oil change and tune up 2 weeks prior. There was no warning lights no knocking and no indication that there was any issue.

Bought a certified pre-owned 2017 kia soul in 2019 and 1 year after usage there was an engine failure for what it appeared to be no reason. I've read that others have experienced the same thing around 60,000 miles and conveniently enough our vehicle had 65000 miles on it at the time of the engine failure. There was a loud knocking noise and then smoke when it failed.

Got the oil changed in october. Was heading home on the highway & was going up a hill then the car started acting up. Looked back in the rear view mirror & saw smoke.

It was time for my second 5000 mile oil change on an engine replaced in july 2020. I go in, and they tell me I need a diagnostic due to oil all over the under carriage. I refuse because this engine has a warranty and is 6 mos.

The noise didn't continue so I drove it home, approximately 17 miles from where it was parked initially.

Something is knocking or ticking in the motor feels like under my feet of drivers floor board. Have kept regular oil changes nd it started off by spitting and sputtering when I would come to a stop to now ticking. Went to start it the next morning to go too work and it sounded awful so I didnt drive it.

Car has 41,900 miles on it. Engine rod blew through the bottom of the engine without warning 900 miles after last oil change. All maintenance records are with Kia and up to date.

The car has been back for two for oil consumptions test at 1000 miles and is burning about 5 quarts every thousand miles.

The car died, found out it was the engine. We didn’t own the car for the 2019 recall and was never told. We owed 7,000 on a dead car.

Engine failure due to same issue the 2016 soul has a recall for. Traveling on highway with a sudden loss of acceleration followed by power steering loss. Was able to get off highway but it took pressing hard on brakes and pulling e-brake to get the vehicle stopped.
