2016 Kia Sorento Transmission Problems

My car totally stopped on me due to one of the 8 recalls I have undone related to my car. My insurance company verified that the recalls were open related to my car. I verified it to make sure by VIN number at NHTSA.gov.

My 2016 Kia Sorento SX AWD shows a noticeable delay in the powertrain when shifting from Park into first gear. The car hesitates before moving, which affects drivability and feels like a transmission lag. I consider this a safety issue because the delay could cause the car to stall unexpectedly.

The shift interlock system stopped allowing the car to come out of park however the vehicle would still roll when in Park, have to do a manual override to take it out of park but it will hesitate on the highway. I have had too many near miss accidents with this vehicle. Especially due to my break lights working intermittently although they've been replaced.

Unknown component or system failed. My car suddenly stalled while on the highway, not allowing me to increase speed (over 40 MPG) and then stopped. I was scared to death when that happened on the highway as we could have been hit by other vehicles.

I was pulled over by the state police. He said I had a few lights out including a brake light out. I got out to check.

I was unable to to get my gear out of park. I took to Kia immediately to inspect this issue. My safety is at risk if a collision occurs because I can’t change gears or if I have my children in the car and I get stuck in a remote location.

My engine failed with no warning, my car shut down on the hwy. It was a safety issue because the car shut down while driving on the hwy and could have resulted in a traffic accident. This problen is all over the internet.

My shifting lever acts all wonky. Feels lose. It acts as if it does not want to go into the gears I put it in, especially park.

Yesterday while driving the engine began to shake and seize, it would not accelerate above 40 MPH. I was seconds from entering the hwy but pulled into quick trip where it died and had to be towed at own expense. Oil pressure sensor had been flashing on periodically when breaks were applied between regular oil changes.

Recently, while driving on a busy multi-lane highway my 2016 Kia Sorento suddenly lost power, started shaking and slowed down causing traffic safety hazard. The engine stalled after slowing down. The car needed to be towed at my expense.my check engine light came on for my KSDS, the engine went limp mode and unable to accelerate over 50 miles and hour on the highway.

This is the second very similar incident with the engine of this vehicle. On Monday, May 29, 2023, the engine failed at a stop light in Fort Wayne Indiana. A few miles before it failed, it suddenly got very noisy and wouldn’t go over about 15 MPH.

Multiple times I will be driving along, and at either a slow speed or stopped at a light, the car will just shut off. This is not safe! Also 2 times the exterior lights have not come on in the dark even if you turn them on yourself nothing comes on and its been dark driving when that's happened!

I would like to confirm if the recall for 2016 Kia Sorento Transmission Shift Level Assembly also covers all of us who have reported complaints about having to use a screw driver to engage our vehicles out of park? This is a safety concerns just as well as the cars that are impacted by the shift lever slipping out of park while engine off.

My gear shift locks in place unless the shift lock release is pressed. Multiple other vehicles of this same Make and Model have a recall for this same issue but my car isn't on the list for it's VIN number so the dealer wants to charge $950 for the BCM to be replaced first before then moving to the shifter and components which will total almost another $600.

I was driving my Kia Sorento and the check engine light came on. Took to Autozone to scan the code. And it came back as a KNOCK SENSOR CODE.

ONE OF THE SERVICE ADVISORS HAD LET ME KNOW THAT THE VEHICLE IS LEAKING OIL AND I'M GOING TO NEED A NEW OIL PRESSURE SWITCH AND A NEW DRAIN PAN SINCE THAT'S WHERE IT'S LEAKING FROM. FOR A PRICE OF $425. UPON LOOKING AND SCOURING THE INTERNET IT LOOKS LIKE THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH KIA AND JUST THE STEP BEFORE OF ENGINE FAILURE. I DON'T KNOW WHY NHTSA DOESN'T MAKE THIS A STANDARD RECALL CONSIDERING THE SPORTAGE HAS THE SAME RECALL AVAILABLE. I MEAN IT'S A KNOWN FACT KIA ENGINES ARE LACKING IN OIL ,CATCHING ON FIRE AND FAILING. I BOUGHT THIS CAR AS A CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED TO BE REST ASSURE WITH MY UNEASINESS ABOUT BUYING A USED CAR AND I'VE BEEN AT THE DEALERSHIP GETTING REPAIRS LEFT AND RIGHT. STARTED GOING UP A MOUNTAIN HIGHWAY AND MY CAR STARTED JUMPING AND IMMEDIATELY DECREASED SPEED. IT WOULD NOT GO AND KEPT SKIPPING, LIKE A STOP AND GO TYPE OF DEAL. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STARTING FLASHING AND I HAD TO PULL OVER. AFTER I GOT MY CAR TOWED IT WAS FOUND THAT THE CAR HAD ZERO OIL IN IT. LIKE BONE DRY BUT WITH ZERO LEAKS ANYWHERE. THE MECHANIC CHECKED EVERYTHING TWICE TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING ELSE WAS INTACT AND IT WAS. MY OIL LIGHT NEVER CAME ON AND IT NEVER SMOKED OR OVERHEATED. I HAD ZERO INDICATION THAT THE CAR DIDN'T HAVE OIL. I WAS 900+ MILES FROM MY NEXT OIL CHANGE. IT WAS LIKE THE OIL EVAPORATED INTO THIN AIR. WE ARE COMPLETELY BAFFLED AS TO WHAT HAPPENED AND WHY THE CAR DIDN'T HAVE ANY OIL IN IT. BECAUSE OF NO OIL, A PISTON BROKE AND THE ENGINE THREW A ROD AND IT IS RUINED. MY CAR NEEDS A WHOLE NEW ENGINE NOW. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE ONLY THING WRONG WITH THE CAR WAS NO OIL AND THAT IT WAS LIKE IT JUST DISAPPEARED BECAUSE THERE WAS NO OIL RESIDUE ANYWHERE.

MY VEHICLE STARTED RUNNING HOT AFTER DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND KEPT CUTTING OFF OUT OF THE BLUE. THEN I CHECKED ALL THE COOLANT AND RADIATOR TO SEE IF FLUID WAS LEAKING NO SIGN OF A CRACK. THEN TOOK IT TO O'REILLYS AUTO PARTS BECAUSE CHECK ENGINE LIGHR SHOWS CODES P0087, DEFECTED TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR, DEFECTED PCM/TCM. POOR CONNECTOR AND THE FUEL RAIL PRESSURE SENSOR. AFTER HAVING IT TOWED TO KIA THEY OPEN IT UP AND SAID I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE AND MY HEAD GASKET WAS CRACKED. AND

Car kicks when driving. Oil burns out after oil change. Every week or 2 I have to put oil in.

MY KIA SORENTO DOES NOT SHIFT OUT OF P (PARK). THE LOCK RELEASE BUTTON DOES NOT ENGAGE UNLESS I ACTIVATE THE SHIFT-LOCK OVERRIDE. I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF MY CHILDREN, TODDLER, AND ENTIRE FAMILY. PLEASE HELP US REPAIR THIS AND ENSURE THE MANUFACTURER IS HELD ACCOUNTABLE.

LOSE OF POWER. MECHANICAL PUT IN COMPUTER. TURBO DEFECTIVE. TOLD SHOULDN'T DRIVE, AS LOSE OF POWER WHILE DRIVING, SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE. THIS ISSUE IS APPLICABLE TOWARD DRIVER AND ORHER VEHICLES AND ITS DRIVER/PASSENGERS ON THE ROAD.

I HAD POWER LOSE WHILE I AM DRIVING ON HIGH WAY OR ON STREET WHERE YOU GO A LITTLE UPHILL. EVEN AFTER THEY REPLACED ENGINE ON MY 2016 KIA SORENTO. IT DOES NOT HAPPENS ON THE STRAIGHT ROAD, ONLY IF THERE IS UPHILL. *TR

I HAD ABOUT 62,500 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. WE WERE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND IT WAS JUST BLOWING COLD AIR FROM THE HEATER. THE VEHICLE STARTED TO STALL AND RAPID DECELLERATE. THANKFULLY THE HIGHWAY WASN'T TOO BUSY AND WE JUST MADE IT ACROSS THE LANES TO THE SHOULDER; IT COULD'VE BEEN VERY TRAGIC IF WE GOT STUCK IN A LANE, ESPECIALLY SINCE THERE WAS NO WARNING WITH A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEFORE THIS. THE VEHICLE WAS SMOKING. WE GOT IT TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP AND THEY CONFIRMED IT WAS OVERHEATING BUT COULDN'T DIAGNOSIS FULL ENGINE ISSUE. WE HAD TO GET TO A KIA DEALER TO DO AN ENGINE TEAR DOWN. THEY FOUND 6 THREADS STRIPPED AND DECIDED THEN IT NEEDS A NEW ENGINE. WE'VE CONSISTENTLY DONE OUR OIL CHANGES AND MAINTENANCE SO IS VERY CONCERNING HOW QUICKLY AND SEVERELY THIS ENGINE ISSUE CAME UP. UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE JUST PAST THE 60K MILE WARRANTY AND KIA IS WILLING TO ONLY OFFER MINOR ASSISTANCE DESPITE EVIDENCE OF OTHER VEHICLES HAVING SIMILAR ENGINE ISSUES.

WHILE PASSING, SUDDEN LOSS OF ALL POWER. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. FROM THAT POINT ON, VERY LOW POWER. WHEN I GOT HOME, THERE WAS A FAIRLY LOUD ENGINE KNOCK AND OIL COMING FROM TAIL PIPE. TOOK CAR TO INDEPENDENT SHOP WHO DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE AS ROD KNOCK. HAD THE CAR TOWED TO KIA DEALER WHO THEN SAID IT NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. ONLY 82,000 MILES ON VEHICLE. KIA COVERED THE PARTS AND LABOR TO REPLACE. WHEN THE SHOP DROPPED THE ENGINE, THEY NOTICED THE DRIVE SPLINES ON BOTH THE AWD TRANSFER CASE AND TRANSMISSION WERE BOTH RUSTED AND ALL TEETH SHEARED OFF ON THE FWD SIDE OF THE SPINES. RWD STILL INTACT. KIA WOULD NOT COVER NEITHER WOULD THE EXTENDED WARRANTY COMPANY BECAUSE OF THE RUST. THAT IS A SEALED UNIT WITH MULTIPLE RUBBER GASKETS. HOW COULD IT POSSIBLY HAVE RUSTED? THIS IS A MAJOR DESIGN FLAW AS THERE SHOULD BEEN ADEQUATE HEAVY LUBRICANT AS WELL AS SEALING TO PREVENT THESE PARTS FROM RUSTING. NEW TRANSMISSION REQUIRED $1800, AND NEW TRANSFER CASE WOULD HAVE BEEN ANOTHER $2500. CHOSE SLIGHTLY USED UNIT FOR $1000. IT TOOK ALMOST 8 WEEKS TO RESOLVE. NOW CAR IS LEAKING OIL ON TO EXHAUST. BACK TO DEALER IT GOES...

Two oil change stations told me I need a new power train. I know power train is covered under 100,000 miles for kia. Want to see if I need your help in the process for defect or anything else to assist me at nearest kia dealership?

I started experiencing overheating issues in july. Knowing kias are notorious for engine trouble, my mechanic checked the head gasket. It was fine but my radiator fan needed replaced.

My transmission failed while driving, stopping and picking up became unsafe. I took it into a kia dealership since it became dangerous to drive. I was then told that there was a TSB sa292 patch that was intended to prevent this exact issue.

We are second owners of a 2016 kia sorrento. Dec 6, 2017, I was driving home and traveling about 60mph on a 2lane hwy when I felt a very severe clunk in the front area of the car and I lost the ability to accelerate. I checked the car and found nothing unordinary.

This 2016 kia sorento (mfg 10/27/14) will lose power/traction in a parking lot when trying to pull out into cross traffic, creating a serious safety problem. The dealer says he is unable to replicate the problem and therefore cannot fix it. I cannot sell/give this unsafe vehicle to a family member until it is corrected.

I purchased this vehicle from mark jackobson toyota on or about 8/20/2017. According to the recall notice in the government data base, the recall for the "rear assist arm bracket weld may break" was issued on or about 7/21/2016. I believe that the dealership that sold me this vehicle should have never let my wife drive the above vehicle off the car lot due to the potential of catastrophic failure.

My wife had the vehicle parked on a slight slope in her moms drive way maybe a 10 degree hill. She placed the vehicle in park and left it running while my daughter finished a birthday card she was making in the back seat.

You can shift the car from park to reverse/drive without putting enough pressure on the brake peddle to actually engage the brake pads to the brake rotors. If you aren't pay attention to how hard you are pressing on the brake peddle, the call will start to move at a normal speed. I have taken the car to two kia dealerships and I have been told this is normal and safe.

Gear shifter gets stuck. Car jerks back when trying to speed up

Put vehicle in park while waiting at a gas station. It won't come out of park. Managed to get it to the pump, and used a screwdriver to bypass the shift lock control, and was able to drive home.

Shifts hard at first crank up.

While sitting in park the parking shift level assembly was bumped by a hand bag by someone getting in the vehicle car shifted out of park into reverse and began to roll backwards while the person was still getting in the car. At the time the driver did not have any foot on the brake Or accelerator.

The button on the gear shift will not push in to move the shifter out of park.

Car will not shift, I have to manually release it. It just started happening very randomly. I constantly have to release it with a screw driver.

Gear shift will not shift into Park and car will roll where parked depending on the incline. It also will not start unless I use the shifter bypass with a small screwdriver to shift it into neutral to start and then shift into reverse or drive.

We were driving on the [XXX] on [XXX] with a speed of around 70 miles per hour. We started to see a small amount of white smoke coming from under the hood and at the same time the truck started to slow down by itself unexpectedly and then started to jerk back and forth. No indicators showed up on the dashboard.

Car will not drive, sputters and will not accelerate at all. Car shakes and then loses power.

Twice now my 2016 Kia GDI has had the same problem as many others. I had my oil changes made and they said there was no oil in the car. the oil light never came on.

The gear shift will not come out of park. I had to stick something in the manual brake release hole to shift out of park.

The car was well maintained and oil was full but the engine started knocking over a short period and then came to a stop when switched to reverse. It can be turned off and on but the sound would continue. The gear shift and the steering would lock.

Shifter cannot be moved out of PARK without pushing down on the SHIFT LOCK RELEASE. I must do this every time I want to go forward or backward. A reliable service center informed me this is a frequent problem with the 2016 Kia Sorento and he suggested a recall may be forthcoming.

Shifts are going into 2nd. Down shifts hard when stopping. When I say it shifts are it jerks.

The entire vehicle shakes on the transition from 1st to 2nd gear. It previously would only do this once at the beginning of every drive, but now it happens during every acceleration from a stop. In other words, after every stop sign or light, the SUV will kick with a significant jolt as it shifts from 1st up to 2nd gear.

The kia will not shift out of park. Took it to a shop and they said it was a solenoid

Total engine failure at 50 thousand miles at highway speeds. Transmission acting funny & shifting hard in weeks prior to engine failure.

No immediate response from accelerator pedal when pressed at idle with car stationary in gear. Pressing more on accelerator to get car moving causes car to then accelerate rapidly. This has happened at least six times in the past year.

When slowing down to 2nd gear the transmission does a hard downshift right around 25-31 MPH causing the car to jerk.
