Open Safety Recalls (3)
NHTSA Campaign: 20V088000
Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Sedona and 2007-2009 Sorento vehicles. Moisture may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short.
Risk: An electrical short within the ABS Module may cause an engine compartment fire, even when the vehicle is turned off, increasing the risk of an injury.
Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will install a relay in the main junction box to prevent power from being directed to the HECU when the vehicle's ignition switch is turned off, free of charge. The recall began June 5, 2020. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC186.
NHTSA Campaign: 11V473000
Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
KIA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 SORENTO PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED FROM JUNE 15, 2006 THROUGH NOVEMBER 27, 2007. THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG MAY BE TURNED OFF WHEN AN ADULT IS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG IS DESIGNED TO BE TURNED OFF IN LIMITED CIRCUMSTANCES INCLUDING WHEN CHILDREN AND SMALL ADULTS ARE SEATED IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, THERE IS A CHILD RESTRAINT IN THAT SEAT OR THE SEAT IS NOT OCCUPIED. THE VEHICLE'S OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (OCS), WHICH CLASSIFIES THE OCCUPANT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, MAY MISCLASSIFY AN ADULT PASSENGER AS A CHILD OR CHILD SEAT AND IMPROPERLY TURN OFF THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG. WHEN THE AIR BAG IS DEACTIVATED THE "PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF" LIGHT WILL ILLUMINATE ON THE CENTER INSTRUMENT PANEL.
Risk: THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG IS TURNED OFF WHEN THE OCS MISCLASSIFIES AN ADULT PASSENGER. WITH THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF, THE FRONT PASSENGER WILL NOT HAVE THE PROTECTION OF THE PASSENGER AIR BAGS IN SOME FRONTAL COLLISIONS, THUS INCREASING THE RISK OF OCCUPANT INJURY.
Fix: KIA WILL UPDATE THE PROGRAMMING IN THE SORENTO OCS CONTROL MODULE AT NO CHARGE. THE RECALL REMEDY IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE UNDER SERVICE CAMPAIGN SC076. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-333-4542.
NHTSA Campaign: 13V114000
Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 215)
Air Bags →6 issues
Your air bag warning light came on and stayed on for both the passenger and driver side air bags when you started the vehicle. This issue has been linked to a known safety recall (NHTSA Campaign 11V473000). The airbags may not deploy properly in a crash if this problem isn't fixed, so this needs to be addressed by a dealer or mechanic who can diagnose and repair the airbag system.

Your driver's side airbag warning light has been on for a year. You've checked for recalls but haven't found any available for your vehicle. You're concerned the airbag may not deploy in a crash if the light stays on. A technician will need to scan your airbag system with diagnostic equipment to identify what's triggering the warning light.

Your passenger airbag system may not be working properly—the 'passenger airbag off' light has been on since you bought the car, which means the airbag might not deploy in a crash when needed. You've contacted Kia twice about a known recall for this issue (2007-2009 Sorentos, recall SC067), but they say your VIN isn't listed as affected and have been unresponsive. The fix will likely involve Kia diagnosing the airbag sensor and/or control module, and replacing any faulty components to ensure the airbag system works correctly.

Your air bag warning light is on. A mechanic told you that you need a new occupant classification system (OCS) seat mat, which helps your car's air bags work properly. Your dealer mentioned there's a recall for this issue, but your vehicle's VIN isn't included in that recall campaign. The fix will likely involve replacing the OCS seat mat and possibly having the air bag system reprogrammed or reset.

Your airbag warning light is on. You believe this may be related to a known Kia airbag recall (campaign 11V473000), but your VIN wasn't confirmed as affected. You took your Sorento to a Kia dealer, but they didn't diagnose or repair the issue. The problem appeared around 97,000 miles. You'll need the dealer to run a diagnostic scan to identify the specific airbag system fault and determine if your vehicle qualifies for the recall repair.

Unknown Or Other →3 issues
After your 2008 Kia Sorento was serviced for a recall involving electrical and brake issues, you noticed a burning smell and smoke coming from inside the cabin. Your engine stalled while driving, and the vehicle struggled to accelerate on hills. The dealer is aware of the problem, but the exact cause hasn't been identified yet. Troubleshooting will likely involve a thorough electrical system inspection and examination of components affected by the previous service work.

Service Brakes →2 issues
Your brake pedal requires pushing almost to the floor to stop the car, and this has been an ongoing issue. The master cylinder has already been inspected multiple times, so the problem lies elsewhere in the braking system. You're concerned the brakes could fail completely without warning. Addressing this will likely involve inspecting and potentially replacing brake components such as brake pads, brake lines, or the ABS control module.

Your ABS brakes make noise and vibrate in your brake pedal when you brake hard on slippery, snowy, or icy roads, warning that the wheels may lock up and cause you to slide. This has caused you to slide into an intersection at least once. The ABS and electronic stability control warning lights don't turn on when this happens while in 4WD mode. The issue has been occurring for about a year during winter months and hasn't been inspected or repaired yet. A mechanic will need to diagnose and potentially repair or replace the ABS system components.

Electrical System,structure,engine →1 issue
Your 2008 Kia Sorento caught fire while parked in a garage for 2 days with the engine off and no key in the ignition. The fire consumed the entire engine compartment and part of the front seat, and also damaged the garage. Kia denied responsibility for the incident. This type of fire typically requires investigation into electrical wiring, fuel system components, or battery connections to determine the cause.

Electrical System,vehicle Speed Control,engine →1 issue
Your vehicle's accelerator pedal suddenly stops responding and won't let the car move, forcing you to shut off the engine completely to reset it. The ESC (Electronic Stability Control) warning light stays on, and this problem has been ongoing since August 2020 even after replacing the ESC relay box and accelerator pedal assembly. This is a serious safety issue that's affecting your ability to drive reliably. The fix will likely require a comprehensive electrical diagnostic to identify which component (sensor, wiring, or control module) is actually causing the accelerator to cut out.

Exterior Lighting,service Brakes →1 issue
When backing out of your garage, you pressed the brake pedal and heard an abnormal sound. Your ABS and electronic stability control warning lights came on. The dealer completed a recall repair but said the problem persisted and you'd need to pay for a diagnostic to find the real cause. The recall didn't fix the safety issue, and your vehicle hasn't been diagnosed or repaired yet.

Electrical System,air Bags,service Brakes →1 issue
Your airbag warning light is on despite Kia's records showing a previous repair, and your brake lights stay on continuously even with the key removed—they won't turn off no matter what. This constant drain caused your battery to die, and after replacing the battery and brake light switch, your engine now won't idle smoothly. The issue likely involves diagnosing the brake light switch circuit and airbag system wiring to stop the drain and restore proper idle operation.
