Your steering felt unstable and unresponsive, similar to driving on ice. When you checked the front tires, you noticed they weren't aligned properly. After inspection, a mechanic discovered the front subframe on the passenger side had rusted through and broken, causing the alignment problem. Fixing this will require replacing the damaged front subframe.
