RECALLCampaign #20V750000

ENGINE

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2012-2013 Sorento, 2012-2015 Forte and Forte Koup, 2011-2013 Optima Hybrid, 2014-2015 Soul, and 2012 Sportage vehicles. An engine compartment fire can occur while driving.

Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine compartment for fuel and/or engine oil leaks, perform an engine test and make any repairs, including engine replacement, as necessary, free of charge. In addition, Kia dealers will update the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software, free of charge. The recall began January 27, 2021. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC200.

Your engine suddenly shut off while you were driving without any warning lights or signs beforehand, causing you to lose power in traffic. Even though you maintained proper oil levels and kept up with regular oil changes, the dealership determined that your engine needs to be replaced but didn't clearly explain why it failed. The repair will likely involve removing your current engine and installing a replacement engine.

Your car has experienced jerking, stalling, and smoking on two separate occasions—once in July and again recently on the interstate. A knock sensor was installed under recall 20v750 (related to engine fire risk), but the problem recurred, and diagnostic codes confirm the knock sensor is faulty. The dealership says the warranty has expired due to your car's mileage and won't cover the repair.

Your engine is making a loud knocking noise that you believe is rod knock, and the car is no longer drivable because of it. You contacted a Kia dealer in Springfield, Missouri to ask if your engine was covered under a class action lawsuit, but the service department never followed up with you despite multiple text messages. The engine may need internal inspection and repair, possibly including rod and bearing replacement if rod knock is confirmed.

While driving, you noticed smoke coming from under the hood and your car lost power. You were able to restart it, but the next day you heard abnormal rattling from the engine when starting it, so you stopped driving. The check engine light came on and the dealer said your engine has failed and needs to be replaced. This issue is related to a manufacturer recall, but the dealer refused to do the recall repair, saying it would only be covered if you'd brought the car in before the failure happened.

Your engine is making a knocking sound when you start the vehicle. A dealer diagnosed the problem and determined that some engine parts need to be replaced, but the complaint doesn't specify which parts. The issue occurred at around 160,000 miles. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the faulty engine components that were identified during diagnosis.

The car shut off (engine died) when I was driving and it wouldnt restart. The car was in perfect working condition, low miles & well taken care of, no lights on the dash or anything. I had it towed to 2 different mechanics (first was private, 2nd was a Kia dealership) - they both told me I needed a new engine or I needed part of the engine fixed and told me it didn't fall under any of the recalls. From what I've read I feel like it is a manufacturer's defect due to all of the recalls on this model/engine.

The engine started knocking just like all the other fortes and theta engines that blew up or gained the same knocking metal to metal noise. I have since found metal shavings in the oil which tells me that my engine is on its way out the door just like the rest that had this same problem. My engine needs to be recalled and replaced alongside the rest! Kia needs to own up to there engineering mistakes and install a new engine. My car should not be ignored on that recall seeing as it has the same engine as all the other fortes that were given new replacement engines. I refuse to be ignored on this matter and will not put forth my own money to fix something Kia is liable for. Kia is putting my life and others lives in danger. When will they take actions and responsibility for the rest of the Kia’s out there with the same engine symptom. I also haven’t got a recall for a knock sensor upgrade. I refuse to be without a vehicle because of Kia’s terrible engineering and poor production and assembly of these cars. I should not be experiencing an engine rod knock at 100k miles that has only become louder with time. I will be presenting the car to Kia for other recalls to be done and will be complaining about the other issues. Thousands of people have had to pay out of pocket to get a new motor. That’s on Kia to make things right with there customers for selling them a faulty product.

I own a 2012 Kia Forte . My engine started knocking, ticking sound. A mechanic used a mechanics stethoscope and the cylinder is collapsed, bad lifter. I always keep the oil changed regularly since the day I purchased. This is the same problem reported by thousands of Kia owners. I expect Kia to cover a new engine as I know a lawsuit was filed for the same year and model that I have and they covered the replacement of engines.

They originally said part was around $79 kia motors was able to find 1 but now dealer telling. While driving on the highway I had the Check Engine light come on. After approximately 5 minutes, while accelerating, all the system lights flashed, and then turned off. The engine stalled and the vehicle was coasting. I pulled the vehicle to the side of the road, and though the vehicle had power, the engine would not start. I towed the vehicle to a mechanic who told me the engine could not be salvaged or repaired. As a replacement engine would cost as much as the vehicle is worth, I am now seeking to sell the car to a junkyard or other interested party. I believe this vehicle's Theta II engine's design is what led to its failure. However, Kia's SC200 recall campaign only covers 2012 Kia Forte's with a 2.4-liter MPI engine, and my vehicle has a 2.0-liter MPI engine. After spending 2 hours with Kia on the phone, they told me I had no recourse with them.

I have owned my 2012 Kia Forte EX since 2013 when I purchased used from a car dealership (not a kia dealer). I have kept all oil changes, filters up to date since purchase, plus in Pennsylvania we have annual car inspections, which my car has always passed. In early Jan 2023, I noticed a 'ticking sound' and was not related to low oil, leak, etc. The sound became increasingly loud and took to my mechanic. After he took off the engine cover and was able to put a camera down into the motor, the cylinders are bad. So, here I am with a 2012 Kia, mileage 83,836 and the motor is shot! I want Kia to replace my motor at no cost as I have read that Kia has agreed that all Kia's produced between 2011 through 2015 have engine failure. How do I have my engine replaced by Kia? I currently am without transportation,

Engine described as making a knocking sound and having total engine failure. The car is not covered under the current 2020 Kia engine recall as it is a 2.0 litre engine. It has been inspected by Kia and an independent auto shop. It was not eligible to receive the software upgrade which would register the knock engine failure. No warning signs appeared beforehand besides a knocking sound which started a week or so before I took it in. This engine could have failed while I was driving and caused an accident. This is a common problem across Kia’s that Kia knows about and this should have been covered by them since they manufactured a faulty engine.

This past winter (December 2022 ish), my car started ticking whenever I turned it on and the ticking never went away as the car warmed up. I took the vehicle to my mechanic who told me it was piston slap and that the issue was caused by a manufacturing defect in the piston and engine block sizing. I confirmed the issue myself with a borescope camera in April, and anyone who is able can view the damage as well. Since the issue is damaging a vital part of the engine, any time the car is driven puts all individuals in the car at risk. It has been confirmed by an independent mechanic, but has not been inspected by anyone outside of myself. The closest warning light I had came up over 2 years ago, but no warning lights or other symptoms appeared before the sound was audible around December 2022.

I purchased a Kia Forte, 2012, in September of 2021. The engine has stalled, several times after putting gas in it and last week after filling up, gas fumes permeated the inside of the car while driving. Recently, this has started happening regularly. When I decided to investigate why this is happening, so that I have awareness of possibilities before going to the crooked dealer, I learned of the Class Action Lawsuit settlement against Hyundai/Kia specifically related to deadly engine stalling while driving and engine fires as a result of the identical problem which I am having. When I put my VIN into your site, it comes up as zero recalls, however, as you state on your site, many vehicles VINs are still updating. I did the research to learn if my vehicle fit the category of how this is happening. The dangerous defect is happening with Hyundai/Kia Theta II multi-port fuel injection (MPI) engines, Nu gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines, and Gamma GDI engines described in the combined lawsuit and all vehicles that have the defect, which adds up to 1.05 million. The vehicles involved in the Settlement are Theta II, Hyundai Tucson/ix35 (LM) (2009–2015), Hyundai Sonata (2007–2014) Kia Forte (TD) (2008–2012), Kia Optima/K5 (2008–2012), Kia Sportage (SL) (2010–2013) My 2012 Kia Forte has the 2.0L DOHC MPI Theta II multi-port fuel injection (MPI) engine listed as defective. As a female Veteran who drives 60 miles to the nearest Veteran's hospital, I am now scared to drive the car due to reports of the vehicle stalling in traffic and in my case on the California freeway where speeds normally are typically 65 to 75 mph. I have no other vehicle. I purchased this vehicle for the outstanding CarFax and Experian reports as a rental car, resulting in the highest standard and consistent servicing for years. Please rush this complaint so that I can keep my VA doctor appointments. I am scared, my VIN is KNAFU4A29C5590130. Thank you.

Car was at KIA dealer for engine noise with 136,000 miles. They performed the knock sensor update and said the engine noise was belts. At 150,000 miles car was at a shop for oil change. They said there are chunks in the oil and engine makes a lot of noise. At 162,000 miles car went into limp mode won’t go over 50 mph. Had car towed to KIA dealer they said the engine was covered under replacement recall. Kia emailed me a quote to do repairs on the car. The quote included a new engine under warranty for ni cost. I told them to replace belts and the engine replacement. The KIA dealer ordered the new engine and removed the old engine. Then called me and said KIA would not cover the engine replacement. I asked what my options are and they said I would have to pay $5,300.00 for new engine or put the old engine back in. This engine has been a problem for the last 2 years like millions of other KIA vehicles. This is a fire safety hazard, I was never notified of the recall!

I received a letter in the mail in the beginning of April about a recall. The Slave Cylinder just happened to go out at this time, so I tow it in to Kia Downtown LA on April 6th. I let them know I have recalls on the vehicle and the problem with the clutch, or more specifically the slave cylinder. They give me a estimate on how much it would be to replace the slave cylinder, so I decline the offer and asked them to just get the recalls done. That was on April 13th. We have this back and forth phone calls about when was I going to pick up my vehicle and I had to constantly remind them that I was waiting on them to call me letting me know when the recalls were finished. It took until April 22nd to find out that none of the recalls were done, after being told they are "still working" on the recalls. I go to pick up my car asking about why none of the recalls were done and their excuse was they could "not turn it on, the car was shaking, or because the clutch issue." I had to pay a fee of $189.95 for the "diagnostics" and in order for them to release the car. I get the car fixed as of June 3rd, and on that day the engine locks. The component that failed is the 'knock sensor detection system' which could have prevented the engine from locking or worst catching on fire. I very much feel that me, my spouses, and others around me on the road were not safe. There was no warning lamps on or messages on to indicate the engine was under any problem. At the same time the oil had been changed on April 1st, and they gave no indication that the car was ever leaking oil. As of June 10th the car was towed into the dealership again. I have called every day they were open, and finally got a hold of a advisor on June 13th. The same advisor as the one I had last time. He now alleges the technician "couldn't get a proper reading from the scanner" last time, and how the "PI 2002" recall has expired so they might not be able to do anything about the engine.

On 10/31/20 my 2012 Kia Forte completely died at 49,000 miles while I was traveling at around 45 mph. I lost all power, the engine started smoking badly and I was stuck in the center of a 4 lane road with cars flying past me at around 50 mph. I had to call 911 because I could not get out of the smoking vehicle and I could not get the vehicle out of the middle of the road. The police officers had to do a pit maneuver to get me safely off to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the dealership where I originally purchased the vehicle in 9/2017. I was told after inspection that it had a severe knock sensor and catastrophic engine failure. My extended warranty company was charged for the $15000 engine that they replaced And I paid my $100 deductible. Although at the time the service department at Kia knew that this was an engine recall call situation that the manufacturer was responsible for, not my extended warranty company. My Kia forte Was in the shop for 2 months and the 1st engine they replaced did not work properly so they had to put another engine in during that period of time. Kia paid for the 2nd engine that was replaced. On January 27th of 2021 I received a notice from Kia Motors notifying me that my vehicle was part of the fire engine recall. I have had my vehicle in my possession a total of Maybe 380 days out of the last 438 since this happened. Kia corporate and the service parts Manager have been completely uncooperative, deceptive and negligent in their treatment towards me.I have gone through Maybe 25 loaner vehicles, had to bring the vehicle back 30 times, now a 4th engine is in the process of being replaced, I have defaulted on my car payments due to out of pocket expenses charged by Kia, the service department manager has stuck me with a $600 rental bill, a $250 traffic camera ticket, put me in a defective loaner that caused an accident and has now spent probably around 90k on a vehicle that is worth a fraction of that.

Two months after the knock sensor update was completed the motor quit running. Prior to this update the car was running great. Even after the motor bearings supposedly were going bad, the car did not leak or burn oil or antifreeze and had been getting 26 miles per gallon in town. Had we traded in the car before the last update we were offered $5400, now the car is only work $800 in salvage. Kia has refused to assist us in any way on this matter and we are having to seek litigation to get some sort of restitution. If you can help this would be greatly appreciated. When the motor failed the car was traveling at highway speeds and just locked up. My daughter, who is 17 and was driving could have been killed as she had to go from the left lane to the right shoulder without any power or power assisted brakes/steering. This is completely unacceptable and Kia would not offer any compensation in the repair of the vehicle and now is seeking a signature absolving them of any liability in this matter.

Car has since been at dealership, following repair test failure. Dealership refuses to offer loaner vehicle, but states repairs could take up to 3 weeks, as they have to wait for new engine to be delivered. OUR LOCAL KIA DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THIS PROBLEM WITH OUR CAR ON 3/15/19. 2012 KIA FORTE SX 2.4L (106,430 MILES, 6430 MILES OUT OF WARRANTY) FOUND THE ENGINE TO BE KNOCKING. FOUND THE #2 ROD BEARING TO BE SEVERELY WORN AND CAUSING THE ENGINE TO MAKE NOISE AND STOP ROTATING. RECOMMEND REPLACING THE ENGINE. THE 2.4L THETA II ENGINE WAS NOT PART OF ORIGINAL RECALL SO KIA WOULD NOT REPLACE ENGINE AND SINCE IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY WE WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST OF A REPLACEMENT ENGINE AND LABOR. WE DECLINED, AND CAR AS SAT STATIONARY FOR PAST TWO YEARS AT OUR HOME. WHEN WE FOUND OUT THIS 2.4L THETA II ENGINE WAS NOW INCLUDED IN A RECENT RECALL WE ASKED KIA TO PROVIDE ALTERNATIVES TO REPLACING THE ENGINE SINCE THE CAR HAS SAT FOR TWO YEARS AND I NO LONGER HAVE FAITH IN THE RELIABILITY OF THIS CAR AS PARTS OF THE CAR ARE NO LONGER IN WORKING CONDITION AND/OR MISSING. THEY REFUSED ANY ALTERNATIVES. THEY WANTED US TO PAY TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO A LOCAL KIA DEALER TO DIAGNOSE A PROBLEM THAT WAS ALREADY DIAGNOSED BACK ON 3/15/19. THE ORIGINAL CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT OVER THE 2.0L AND 2.4L GDI ENGINES PROVIDED ALTERNATIVES TO ENGINE REPLACEMENT AND REIMBURSEMENT FOR EXPENSES ASSOCIATED WITH THE ENGINE FAILURE (LIKE TOWING), REBATES, ETC. SINCE KIA WAS FOUND AT FAULT AND FINED BY THE US GOVERNMENT OVER THEIR DELAY IN RECALLING THESE 2.4L THETA II ENGINES AND SINCE THAT DELAY WAS THE ONLY REASON WE DIDN'T FIX THIS CAR ON 3/15/19 WE FEEL WE SHOULD BE COMPENSATED FOR OUR EXPENSES AND LOSS OF TRANSPORTATION BECAUSE OF THEIR FAULTY ENGINE AND THEIR NEGLIGENCE IN DELAYING THE RECALL. HAVING THE ENGINE REPLACED NOW IS NO LONGER A VIABLE OPTION FOR US. WE OFFERED TO PURCHASE A NEW VEHICLE WITH THE COST OF ENGINE REPLACEMENT/LABOR PUT TOWARDS A REBATE, KIA REFUSED.

I CONTINUED DRIVING THE CAR, WITH REGULAR OIL CHANGES (ALL MY MAINTENANCE WAS DONE AT THE DEALER), UNTIL SEPTEMBER 2020, WHEN THE NOISE BECAME VERY VERY NOTICEABLE, AT ALL SPEEDS AND ALMOST CONSTANT. BECAUSE I HAD MOVED TO CALIFORNIA, I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER KIA DEALERSHIP IN OAKLAND AND THEY SAID THEY CAN INSTALL A USED ENGINE REPLACEMENT (WITH 30 K MILES ON IT ALREADY) FOR A MINIMUM OF 6200 BEFORE TAX. I THOUGHT THEY WERE KIDDING, TOOK IT TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T EVEN DO SO MUCH AS CHANGE THE OIL IN THAT VISIT.... WELL THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AGREES ON THE ROD BEARING BEING ON ITS WAY OUT AND THAT THE ENGINE CAN SEIZE AT ANY POINT. THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TORE DOWN THE ENGINE TO DIAGNOSE IT. I NOW HAVE TO PAY MORE THAN THE CAR'S WORTH TO ENSURE IT DOESN'T SEIZE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND KILL SOMEONE, OR HAVE TO SELL IT FOR SCRAPS, DESPITE INSTALLING BRAKE PADS, ROTORS, A NEW EVAP CANISTER (CRACKED AND FAILED SMOG TEST IN CALIFORNIA)AND PURGE VALVE JUST THIS YEAR ALONE. AT AROUND 125,000 MILES - I NOTICED A TICKING SOUND AND TAPPING COMING FROM THE ENGINE ON MY 2.0L MPI "THETA II" 2012 KIA FORTE. AT FIRST IT WENT AWAY QUICKLY AFTER STARTUP BUT THEN WHEN IT GOT COLDER THAT WINTER IT GOT NOTICEABLY LOUDER AND IS NOW CONSTANTLY PRESENT AT 157,930 MILES, SPEEDING UP AS I ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC AT AROUND 128,800 MILES AND HE SAID THAT I WOULD NEED TO HAVE THE ENGINE TAKEN APART TO DO MORE DIAGNOSIS AND THAT IT MIGHT BE BETTER TO JUST DRIVE IT TO SEE IF IT GETS WORSE. I'VE GOTTEN DOCUMENTED REGULAR OIL CHANGES SINCE I WAS THE OWNER IN 2017, SWITCHING TO THE KIA DEALERSHIP AT MY MECHANIC'S SUGGESTION AFTER HAVING THEM CHECK OUT THE TAPPING/TICKING ISSUE. THESE OIL CHANGES HAVE NOT RESOLVED THE PROBLEM, INSTEAD IT'S CONTINUING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR WITH EACH WINTER MAKING IT SLOWLY GET WORSE. I BOUGHT MY 2012 KIA FORTE 2.0L WITH 30,000 MILES 3 YEARS AGO. I NOW HAVE 100,955 MILES. MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN KEPT UP AND VEHICLE HAS BEEN WORKING FINE WITH NO ISSUES. MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING AND WAS AT A STOP LIGHT WHEN THE CAR JUST SHUT DOWN. WHEN YOU WOULD TURN THE KEY YOU WOULD HERE 1 CLICK AND THEN NOTHING. WE BOUGHT A STARTER BECAUSE WE TESTED THE STARTER ON THE VEHICLE AND IT WAS BAD. STILL EVEN AFTER REPLACING THE STARTER YOU WOULD ONLY HEAR ONE CLICK. I HAD A MECHANIC COME LOOK AT THE CAR ONLY TO TELL ME THAT MY ENGINE HAS LOCKED UP. SAYS ITS CAUSED BY POOR MAINTENANCE AND/OR BAD DESIGN. HE SAID THE FIRST THING HE CHECKED WAS THE MAINTENANCE AND EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT ON THE CAR, BUT AGAIN MY ENGINE WAS LOCKED UP.

IVE BEEN DRIVING MY CAR FOR SEVERAL WEEKS WITH POOR PERFORMANCE, ROUGH STARTS, AND BAD FUEL ECONOMY. ON MY WAY TO WORK ONE MORNING, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED. LATER THAT DAY I TOOK IT ADVANCED AUTO PARTS AND GOT A 'P200A' CODE. I TOOK MY CAR TO A NEARBY SHOP AND HAD A DIAGNOSTIC DONE WHICH COST ME $103.19. I PURCHASED THE VCM MOTOR ASSEMBLY WHICH ALSO COST ME $244.25. ONCE I REMOVED THE OLD PART I REALIZED THAT THE PLASTIC PIECE THAT CONNECTS INTO THE MANIFOLD WAS COMPLETELY DISINTEGRATED.

I HAD BOUGHT THE CAR USED 5 YEARS AGO WITH 36,000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR FOR THE AT TIME SPAN. I HAD CHANGED TO OIL AT THE RECOMMENDED INTERVALS USING OEM OIL FILTERS AND FULL SYNTHETIC OIL. I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK WHEN THE ENGINE STARTED TO DEVELOP A RATTLING NOISE. AS I MADE A LEFT TURN ONTO A COUNTRY ROAD TRAVELING AT A SPEED OF 45MPH THE RATTLING HAD GOT MORE NOTICEABLE AND THE ENGINE HAD A LOST OF POWER. EVENTUALLY THE RATTLING TURN INTO A METALLIC CRUNCHING NOISE BEFORE THE ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUT OFF ON ITS OWN. I HAD PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO FURTHER INSPECT THE PROBLEM AND THAT IS WHEN I HAD DISCOVERED ENGINE OIL COATING THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND LEAKING ONTO THE GROUND. THE ENGINE WOULD NOT RESTARTED LEAVING ME STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD UNTIL A TOW VEHICLE HAD ARRIVED.

I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AT 40 MPH WHEN APPROACHING THE RAMP TO THE HIGHWAY (65 MPH) AND BEGAN TO HEAR A LOT OF NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE (SOUNDED LIKE METAL SCRAPPING). I BEGAN TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER BUT THE ENGINE STOPPED RUNNING BEFORE I COULD GET TO THE SHOULDER AND NOTE NO INSTRUMENT PANEL WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. I COASTED TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD, PUT THE CAR IN PARK, ATTEMPTED TO START THE CAR, ALL THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS WERE FLASHING, AND THEN DARK SMOKE WAS COMING OUT FROM THE HOOD. I GOT OUT OF THE CAR AS I THOUGHT IT WAS ON FIRE BUT COULD NOT OPEN THE HOOD AS IT WAS EXTREMELY HOT. I WAITED AND THEN TRIED AGAIN, FINALLY, OPENING THE HOOD WITH A RAG. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE SEIZED, I HAD IT TOWED TO A 2ND MECHANIC (SAME DIAGNOSIS) THEN WAS INFORMED OF SC147 AFTER DOING AN INTERNET SEARCH. I CONTACTED KIA AND OPENED A CASE #13204401 WHERE I THEN HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED FOR THE 3RD TIME TO A KIA DEALERSHIP (BOB BELL, BALTIMORE, MD) WHERE THEY HAD TO DO THEIR DIAGNOSTIC TEST (TECHNICIANS CELL VIDEO TO SHOW THE CAR WILL NOT START), PER KIA, TO COME TO THE CONCLUSION MY CAR IS NOT PART OF SC147 (ACCORDING TO MY VEIN #). THIS SAFETY RECALL IS FOR 2.4L GDI ENGINES AND MINE IS A 2.4L DOHC. IN ADDITION TO MY COMPLAINT, I WANT TO KNOW WHERE IN THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS (WHAT PLANT WAS MY ENGINE ASSEMBLED?) IF GIVEN THEY ARE THE SAME ENGINES BUT ONLY A TOP COVERING DIFFERENCE (GDI VS DOHC), THEN HOW DO I KNOW FOR SURE MY ENGINE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN PART OF MAJOR SC147 SINCE MY VEHICLE HAD BEEN RUNNING WITH NO ISSUES AND REGULAR MAINTENANCE WITH 160,000 + MILES?

GOOD AFTERNOON. I WANTED TO BRING TO THE ATTENTION AND THE SEVERITY OF THIS ISSUE. IN THE MONTH OF JUNE 2018 MY EXPECTING WIFE IN HER 2012 KIA FORTE WAS ON HER WAY HOME ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN THE CAR WITH NO SIGNS LEADING UP TO THIS DECIDED TO DIE UNEXPECTEDLY ON THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE. WE HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A CERTIFIED DEALER TO HAVE DIAGNOSES OF WHAT HAPPENED THE CONCLUSION WAS THE ENGINE'S CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS SEIZED. MUCH LIKE THE KIA AND HYUNDAI RECALL FOR THE EXACT SAME FAILURE FOR MORE THAN 1.5 MILLION CARS ARE IMPACTED. I EXPRESSED HOW THIS COULD BE DUE TO CAR HAS 68,000 MILES ON IT AND ALL THE MAINTENANCE WAS PERFORMED REGULARLY. THE WIFE PURCHASED THIS CAR USED FROM A WELL KNOWN DEALER ONLY A YEAR AGO AND ADDED 12,000 ON THE ODOMETER. I CONTACTED KIA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS TOSSED AROUND WITH NO ANSWERS. AFTER MORE THAN A MONTH KIA CORP CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT NO HELP WOULD BE GIVEN ON REPLACEMENT OF A ENGINE. I EXPRESSED HOW DANGEROUS THIS SITUATION WAS WHEN YOUR VEHICLE'S ENGINE JUST SEIZES AND HOW CLOSE MY WIFE AND UNBORN CHILD WAS ALMOST IN A VERY BAD ACCIDENT. THERE WAS ZERO CARES GIVEN. I SPOKE WITH A KIA REPRESENTATIVE AFTER REVIEW FROM A MANAGER AND WAS TOLD THEY WOULD NOT GIVE ANY ASSISTANCE DUE TO, AND I QUOTE " BECAUSE YOU HAVE NOT OWNED A PRIOR KIA PRODUCT AND YOU ARE NOT CONSIDERED A LOYAL CUSTOMER AND DUE TO THAT CONCLUSION THAT IS THE REASON AND CONCLUSION FOR MAKING THE DECISION". I WAS TO UPSET AND EXPRESSED MY FRUSTRATION AND STILL NO RESOLUTION. THE CAR IS STILL INOPERABLE TILL I EXHAUST ALL PATHS AND MAKE SURE MY EXPERIENCE DOES NOT HAPPEN TO ANY OTHERS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS ISSUE AND KIA DOES NOT WANT TO OWN UP TO IT. THEY ARE SWEEPING THIS ISSUE UNDER A RUG TILL SOMEBODY REALLY GETS HURT OR WORST. I WANT KAI TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THIS ISSUE AND MAKE IT RIGHT NOT JUST FOR ME BUT OTHERS HAVING THIS ISSUE.

I WAS ON MY WAY HOME ONE AFTERNOON DRIVING ON A 2 LANE HIGHWAY IN A RURAL AREA A SPEED LIMIT OF 55MPH, THAT'S THE POSTED SPEED. I DIDN'T HAVE ANYTHING GOING THAT WOULD PREVENT FROM HEARING THE NOISE IM ABOUT TO HEAR!! IT WAS LIKE CAR WAS NOW CARRYING HUGE WEIGHT AND VERY;LITTLE POWER. I TRIED TO PULL OFF THE SIDE AND THEN CARS OIL LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN IT STALLED, I PUT IT IN NEUTRAL POSITION ATTEMPTING TO START CAR, CAR DID START BUT ONLY TO MAKE A LOUD KNOCKING FROM HOOD AREA, I POPPED HOOD AND CHECKED OIL AND OTHER FLUIDS,EVERYTHING SEEMED FINE WITH FLUIDS BUT ENGINE HAS A HORRID KNOCKING, CAR DIDN'T WANT TO STAY AT IDLE SO I CALLED FOR A TOW, THEN TAKEN TO LOCAL AUTO REPAIR, THEY CALLED AFTER THEIR INVESTIGATION STATING THE "CAMSHAFT TIMING WAS BAD AND BY LOOKING AT DIFFERENT THINGS THEY FELT A NEW ENGINE WAS ONLY OPTION AS THE BEARING WAS NOW BAD, INFORMED ME THAT UPON LOOKING FOR AN ENGINE IT APPEARED A NEW ENGINE AROUND 6000 DOLLARS WAS ONLY ONE AVAILABLE . I CALLED MY AUTO INS COMP TO EXPLAIN AND SEE IF I HAD ENOUGH COVERAGE FOR THE REPAIR, TO BE TOLD THAT THEY(INS COM) WASN'T LIABLE FOR THE ENGINE I DID CALL A FEW OTHER REPAIR PLACES AND WAS TOLD SAME THING (3 TOTAL)SO I AGAIN TOWED CAR TO HOME AND HAVEN'T ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE. I SPOKE TO DEALERSHIP TO BE TOLD MY CAR WASN'T IN PREVIOUS RECALL BUT STATED THEY HAD A SLEW CALL AND REPORT ENGINE FAILURE AND HE VOTED THE FORTE BE IN THE STANDING RECALL OR PLACE A RECALL FOR THE KIA FORTE AND SUDDEN ENGINE FAILURE.. ZERO TROUBLE WITH THE CAR AND WOULD LIKE TO GET REPAIRED SO I CAN HAVE TRANSPORTATION AGAIN. DRIVING DOWN AN INTERSTATE AROUND 75MPH THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING AN ABNORMAL LOUD ENGINE KNOCKING NOISE SO I PULLED OVER TO THE MEDIAN AND THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON, ENGINE SEIZED, AND THE CAR DIED AND WOULD NOT START. CAR HAD OIL. TOWED 100+ MILES TO OUR LOCAL KIA DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID #2 ROD BEARING "SEVERELY WORN AND CAUSING THE ENGINE TO MAKE NOISE AND STOP ROTATING". THEY RECOMMENDED A COMPLETE ENGINE REPLACEMENT AT A COST OF AROUND $5700 (COST AND LABOR). 2012 KIA FORTE SX WITH 2.4L ENGINE AND 106,XXX MILES (6,000 OUTSIDE THEIR 10YEAR/100,000 MILE WARRANTY). CAR HAD REGULAR OIL CHANGES AT THE PROPER TIMES. THIS IS THE SAME TYPE OF PROBLEM (WORN ROD BEARINGS) KIA/HYUNDAI HAD WITH THEIR OTHER ENGINES WHICH REQUIRED A RECALL TO ADDRESS THE THOUSANDS OF GRIEVANCES. I WOULD LIKE THESE 2.4L FORTE ENGINES TO ALSO BE INCLUDED IN A FUTURE RECALL BECAUSE I BELIEVE THESE ENGINES ARE EITHER DEFECTIVE IN THEIR MANUFACTURING PROCESS OR JUST FAULTY BY DESIGN. HAD I NOT PULLED OVER WHEN I DID THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THE ENGINE WOULD HAVE SEIZED WHILE I WAS DRIVING INTERSTATE SPEED WITH THE TYPICAL INTERSTATE TRAFFIC (SEMI TRUCKS ALL OVER) WITH MY WIFE AND TWO SMALL CHILDREN ON BOARD. KIA REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE A PROBLEM AND SO FAR HAVE OFFERED NO SATISFACTION. A MODERN CAR SHOULD LAST MORE THAN 7 YEARS, UNLESS IT WAS DESIGNED WRONG OR DAMAGED IN THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS.

THIS ENGINE HAS ALWAYS HAD LOUD VALVES. DEALER SAYS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT WHEN WE BOUGHT IT IN 2012. AT 121,000 MILES, THE ENGINE HAS SUDDENLY DEVELOPED A SOLID KNOCKING FROM DEEP WITHIN THE ENGINE - MUCH LIKE THE SAME CONDITIONS THAT RESULTED IN THE OPTIMA, SPORTAGE, AND SORRENTO ENGINES BEING RECALLED. KIA CLAIMS THERE IS NO ISSUE WITH FORTE ENGINES YET THEY EXHIBIT THE SAME KNOCKING THAT ENDS WITH CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO PREMATURE BEARING WEAR. WHEN COLD, MY 2.0L GAS ENGINE CLATTERS MORE THAN A DIESEL TRUCK. IS IT POSSIBLE THEY ARE RESISTING ADDING THE FORTE DUE TO THE SHEER NUMBER OF THOSE VEHICLES SOLD? DEALER WANTS $109 PER HOUR FOR DIAGNOSTICS WITH NO CAP ON HOURS SPENT. ON THE KIA FORUM I FOLLOW, THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO HAVE WAITED 3 MONTHS FOR A REPLACEMENT ENGINE. I'M NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO SPENDING MORE FOR A REPLACEMENT ENGINE THAN THE VEHICLE IS WORTH. UP UNTIL NOW, THIS HAS BEEN A GREAT VEHICLE. SOLID, RELIABLE, ONE I WOULD JUMP INTO AND DRIVE 1200 MILES ON A TRIP WITHOUT HESITATION. WE AVERAGED 38 MPG MAKING TRIPS FROM NY TO FL AND BACK. NOW I'M SCARED TO EVEN MOVE IT IN THE DRIVEWAY. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND WE MANAGED TO GET IT TO THE SHOP, WHERE OIL AND ENGINE WERE CHECKED. EVERYTHING SEEMED OK, NO MAIN REASON FOUND AS TO WHY. SOME MORE OIL WAS ADDED AND WERE TOLD TO DRIVE IT TO RESET EVERYTHING AND THE ENGINE LIGHT WOULD GO OFF. 2 MONTHS, 2 OIL CHANGES/TUNE UPS AND ENGINE LIGHT WILL NOT COME OFF. LAST WEEK, AS WE'RE LEAVING FOR MY KIDS BIRTHDAY PARTY, CAR KEEP STALLING OUT WHEN WE TRY TO PUT IT INTO DRIVE. HAD IT TOWED TO DEALER WHERE HE SAYS WE'LL NEED A NEW ENGINE. SO WE ONLY DROVE IT LESS THAN 3000 MILES OVER THE LAST ONE YEAR. WHILE HE WAS TRAVELING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, HE STARTED HEARING A CLANKING NOISE AND THEN THE CAR STOPPED AND WOULD NOT DRIVE ANY LONGER. HE SAID NO ENGINE WARNING LIGHT EVER CAME ON. ONLY HIS OIL MAINTENANCE LIGHT HAD COME ON RIGHT BEFORE IT OCCURRED. HE CHECKED THE OIL ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE OIL WAS FINE AND STILL HAD APPROXIMATELY 2000 LIFE MILES REMAINING ON IT. WE HAD IT TOWED TO A MECHANIC THAT INSPECTED THE CAR AND HE SAID THE ENGINE IS SEIZED UP. BUT, HE SAYS SEES NO MAINTENANCE RELATED REASON FOR WHY THIS ENGINE HAS SEIZED UP LIKE IT HAS. I DID SOME CHECKING ONLINE TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY ISSUES REPORTED FOR THIS. WE FOUND THERE WAS A RECALL BY HYUNDAI AND KIA FOR AN ISSUE THAT SOUNDS EXACTLY THE SAME AS WHAT OCCURRED TO OUR ENGINE. MY 2012 KIA FORTE STARTED PRODUCING A TAPPING NOISE WHEN IDLING WHICH BECAME MORE RAPID AND A BIT LOUDER WHEN ACCELERATING. RESEMBLING A "STICKY LIFTERS" SOUND, I DECIDED TO WAIT 2-3 WEEKS FOR MY NEXT OIL CHANGE TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. MY MECHANICS HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS CAUSING THE NOISE, WHICH WAS MUCH LOUDER AFTER 2-3 WEEKS, AND ADVISED I TAKE MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. I IMMEDIATELY SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT AND GOT THE CAR TO THE DEALER THE FOLLOWING WEEK. THE DEALERSHIP REP FIRST TRIED TO INSIST, WITHOUT HAVING LOOKED AT THE CAR, THAT IT WAS MY MECHANIC'S FAULT IN MY ROUTINE OIL CHANGES. I CALLED MY MECHANIC, DISCUSSED THEIR FILTERS OIL ETC (THEY ARE A REPUTABLE COMPANY), AND CONCLUDED THAT THE DEALERSHIP'S RESPONSE WOULD NOT DO. THE DEALERSHIP FINALLY LISTENED TO THE SOUND AND IMMEDIATELY ADMITTED IT WAS NOT THE OIL/FILTER. THEY TOLD ME THEY NEEDED TO KEEP THE CAR FOR 2+ WEEKS TO INVESTIGATE. I ASKED IF I COULD BRING IT BACK SATURDAY TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR WORK. THE REP SAID YES AND THEN THE MECHANIC CAME OUT AND SAID IT WOULD BE ABSOLUTELY DANGEROUS TO TAKE THE CAR AND THEN WAS THE FIRST TO TELL ME THAT THE WHOLE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. REGARDLESS, THEY EVENTUALLY DISCOVERED METAL SHAVINGS IN THE OIL THROUGHOUT THE ENGINE FROM MANUFACTURING DEBRIS. TODAY (4/8/17), AN OFFICIAL HYUNDAI AND KIA RECALL WAS ANNOUNCED ON VARIOUS MODEL ENGINES - THE FORTE WAS NOT ON THE LIST. I IMMEDIATELY FELT THIS REPORT NEEDED TO BE FILED TO LET OTHER FORTE OWNERS KNOW THAT 1) SOME DEALERSHIPS ARE NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY AND 2) THE FORTE IS NOT IMMUNE TO THIS PROBLEM. IT IS RIDICULOUS THAT KIA WOULD NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THE FULL EXTENT OF THE ISSUE EVEN IF FORTES ARE NOT AS COMMONLY AFFECTED. ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS, JUNE 5-JULY 17, 2015 OUR KIA FORTE 5 DOOR HATCHBACK FAILED TO START. TOW COMPANY PERSONNEL ATTEMPTED TO JUMP START THE CAR WITHOUT SUCCESS. CAR WAS TAKEN TO TWO SEPARATE DEALERSHIPS AND THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE REPLICATED. REPAIRS WILL NOT BE MADE UNTIL THE CONDITION CAN BE REPLICATED. AFTER SITTING FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD (1-3 DAYS) THE CAR WILL START. WE REPLACED THE BATTERY ON JUNE 23RD AT THE SUGGESTION OF A TOW TRUCK DRIVER WHO REFUSED TO TOW US. HE RELATED THAT IN HOT WEATHER KIA CARS OFTEN WILL NOT START IF THE BATTERY IS WEAK. WITH A NEW TOP OF THE LINE BATTERY, ON JULY 17TH THE CAR REFUSED TO START. WHEN THE 105 DEGREE TEMPERATURE DROPPED TO 90 DEGREES, THE CAR STARTED. WE ARE STUCK WITH A NEW CAR THAT WILL NOT START RELIABLY IN HOT WEATHER. DEALERS CANNOT FIX IT. OUR WARRANTY IS "VALUELESS". KIA CORPORATE HAS ASSIGNED A CASE NUMBER AND WE ARE SEEKING REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT. UNTIL THIS HAPPENS, WE ARE FRIGHTENED TO TRUST OUR KIA IN OUR REMOTE SIERRA NEVADA MOUNTAIN LOCATION WHERE BEING STRANDED CAN BE LIFE THREATENING. WE HAVE MADE A $21,000.00 MISTAKE AND LEMON LAW COURT IS OUR ONLY RECOURSE.
