The Power Transfer Unit (PTU) and transfer case have failed. The vehicle was initially suspected to have a wheel bearing issue due to a howling noise during the test drive. However, after purchase, the noise worsened significantly.

Manufacture can replace whole PTU unit and not just the snap ring. Issue the recall based on shaft and snap ring incompatibility engineering intolerances resulted in complete PTU unit being replaced. There is a remedy if you replaced the whole PTU unit.

In some instances, I cannot safely navigate without access to my 4 wheel drive. SVC 4WD light and clunking noises code C14A7-97-Rear differential and ptu spline failure and replaced at 34,870 miles. Now 71,060 miles SVC 4WD light on and code is again C14A7 rear differential and spline failure. And was told this time the 48 month warranty on the parts has expired.

Car made a noise and the service 4WD came on. The shop I went to told me it was PTU and that when he called Jeep they told him it should’ve been a recall with how many they do daily. My Jeep is well maintained and is a 2018.

Approximately 3 weeks ago had SVC 4WD light came on. I took it to my mechanic and was told they couldn't diagnose it because a special subscription has to be paid for to access what the Jeep code is. Was able to find a mechanic that could diagnose the Jeep code, turns out the PTU needs to be replaced at an estimate of $5,000.

Vehicle started to make “knocking” noises from front axle when going over bumps. Brought to a shop that stated the ball joints just needed to be greased up. The sound returned within 24 hours and become continuous while driving.

Transmission seemed to go into neutral momentarily while driving at highway speed, causing engine to rev and loss of power to drive wheels. Problem occurred on four separate occasions on approximately 300 mile drive. There were no warning lights except a notice that cruise control was automatically turned off on the one occasion that it was active when the failure occurred.

My car will randomly shut off going 60mph. I will start it back up and it will make a pop sounds and give a little gas to go and it acts like I I’m giving it more gas than I am. I have almost been hit on freeways because of this.

The other day yet again, a “service shifter” error showed up on my jeeps dashboard shortly after I started to the vehicle. The error showed on the dash and all of the lights on my shifter turned solid red. This is a big safety issue and seems as if there could be some electrical or power train components malfunctioning internally in my Jeep.

After backing out of a parking spot, I received a "service shifter" warning on my instrument panel and all the indicator lights on my shifter illuminated. After turning the car off and back on, the warning went away but reappeared mid-drive a day later. Concerned that my car may not be fully in gear, or that it might slip out of gear, I made an appointment with my dealership.

I was getting a service shifter light and called the dealer and the said it was a recall it needed a system reboot to bring it in. But that did not fix the problem the light is still on and after doing research it really is the wiring for the shifter. Which can cause the vehicle to not signal what gear it is in.

Power transfer unit failed , 2014-2017 models the same as mine have been recalled for this very type of failure. My 2018 was build with exact same ptu assembly.

During transit down the street and once the car turned on in the driveway, the shifter column lights are lit up in red, the dash reads service shifter. Please help us and others resolve this issue as it is a hit and miss with the dealerships and jeep stating that it is not an issue enough to call it a recall when there are dozens if not hundreds with the same issue.

Many times when the vehicle hits a good sharp bump in the road or I bump the shifter sharply, the display immediately gives a service shifter fault alert on the communication panel and all of the lights p, r, n, f and the manual lights illuminate on the shifter. The vehicle can be moving or at rest and the ignition on for this to happen.

When my vehicle accelerates the transmission seems to be slipping or not fully engaging. The rpms will spike to about 4,000 before the transmission will shift, and when it shifts the whole vehicle will shudder like it's been hit by a sledgehammer wielded by thor himself. To be able to continue driving my vehicle I have to slowly accelerate and keep the vehicle under 3,000 rpms.

Have had several issues with this cherokee, my oil pressure light would come on when I would take sudden turn, I took it in to my local dealer and they stated to start an oil consumption test, it appears the motor equipped in the cherokee was burning oil and they couldn't determine where the oil was going, also during this time, my 'service shifter' light came on my dash and all of the shifter lights would come on at the same time, this would happen periodically, they decided they needed to replace motor due to the oil issue, I asked about the service shifter issue, they stated that they could not find any faults with the service shifter, sure enough 3 weeks later my service shifter light came on again and wouldn't go off, I was unable to tell which gear I was in because of this because of all of the gear lights were on simultaneously, needless to say, the dealer does not have an answer for this issue, I would like to request this issue be documented and repaired or recalled.

While in motion, all the indicator lights for my shifter turned on and service shifter warning was illuminated on my cluster. Once I stopped and turned off the vehicle, the condition cleared and went away.

2018 jeep 22000 miles, has continued and worsening shiftier or transmission issue with red lights, needs service and locks out transmission changes to regulate speed. This has been at the two different dealers with an ongoing safety issue. I am a retired nicb special agent and have worked auto theft.

Have not owned vehicle for a year yet, bought with about 1000 miles on it. It was previously owned by somebody in dealership from what we were told. At 11,677 miles the "service shifter" warning showed up and shifter panel lit up while I was driving in town and stayed that way until I turned the jeep off a few miles later.

While I was driving down i95 - the gearshift froze up and the entire gearshaft turned red. I was unable to shift gears until I was able to slow down / come to a stop on the side of an exit road. This has happened a total of two times on separate occasions - once three months after the dealership claimed they fixed the issue.

Entering I 264 va, pressed accelerator resulting in a lurching motion, the vehicle would not accelerate causing other vehicles to swerve to avoid rear ending our 2018 jeep cherokee latitude. It repeated this action many times as we limped home under 40 MPH. We were afraid to drive the vehicle and called the dealer (southern chrysler jeep at greenbrier).

Transmission randomly does not want to go in the right gear. The vehicle then feels like it is almost stopping and jerking hard while the vehicle then finds the correct gear and starts working properly again a weird noise also seems to randomly come for the engine or transmission. I have not been able to find a trigger or what makes the transmission do this, it seems completely random.

In Jan 2025 I received a recall notice regarding the PTU unit. The notice indicated that I could esperience loss of power and the inability to use park. However, when speaking to Mopar abot it they say it is safe to drive!!!

There is currently a recall for jeep cherokee ptu units. Our vehicle is experiencing all the same issues listed in the recall. The manufacturer claims that our vehicle does not fall in to the recall.

After my husband started my Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk today he shifted into 'DRIVE' and pulled the vehicle out of our garage. While in 'DRIVE' and with his foot on the brake waiting for the garage door to close, he noticed that a 'Service Shifter' message had appeared in the center of the dash screen.

While driving my vehicle, the vehicle suddenly stopped accelerating. I pulled over and when I put it into park it felt like it was the transmission. However, I had the transmission inspected and there were no issues.

The SERVICE 4WD light came on at 206,000 miles in February . Had mechanic put code reader on and stated that the PTU is faulty. Then the service shifter light is on as well in February at 206,000 miles.

The Service Shifter message comes on replacing the speedometer display on the dash. All of the LED's on the shifter bezel light up when it occurs, so you can't tell the gear you are in. It has been happening more frequently lately and began around 3 years ago.

I believe the shifter bezel is faulty. When pulling out of my drive way backwards a service shifter light came on and caused me to get stuck sideways and having multiple cars nearly tbone be because the hazard lights wouldn’t turn on after. I can’t even drive because of this incident I don’t feel safe in this jeep!!!

My vehicle told me to put it in neutral and then park while I was at a red light. I did that and my vehicle would not move. I left it in park and turned the vehicle off but it would not restart.

I turned my jeep on, put it into drive and the screen says service shifter. All lights on shorter are on.

Three times over a period of four days while driving all lights on the gear shift (park, neutral, reverse, and driving) lit up and a message came on the dashboard that read "service shifter". During the course of traveling on june 18th 2019 I received a message via the display that said "service shifter". In addition the gear shift panel (park, reverse, drive) collectively illuminated in red. The issue gave the impression that the transmission or gears could cease from working while in motion.

Vechicle was in motion and vechicle completely stopped and shut off in the middle of the road. Vechicle then restarted and did the same thing a second time.

Tl* the contact owns a 2018 jeep cherokee. While the vehicle was stationary and while driving various speeds, the service shifter warning indicator illuminated. The contact stated that the parking symbol on the gear shift mechanism and all the lights on the gear shift mechanism illuminated.

I purchase the vehicle new on march 30. On sunday, april 1 the car automatically went into park assist mode without the button being pushed. This happened while driving 50 MPH down the highway causing the transmission to shift into neutral.
