Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 110)
Fuel System, Gasoline →6 issues
Your 2021 Hyundai Sonata was recalled for a fuel system issue (Campaign 25V796000), and when you took it to the dealer for repair, they said the vehicle couldn't be fixed. Hyundai's engineers reviewed your car and determined it was unrepairable, offering you a buyback with an 8% discount on a new vehicle instead—an offer you declined since your car hasn't actually failed and is nearly paid off. The resolution would likely involve either replacing fuel system components or, in Hyundai's assessment, replacing the entire vehicle.

You've noticed a strong gas smell in your car and took it to the dealer twice for inspection. While they repaired a cracked cylinder head during the second visit, they couldn't identify the source of the smell and suggested you return if you notice it again while driving. You're concerned about safety, especially when transporting young children, since a persistent gas smell could indicate a fuel leak or fire hazard.

Power Train,engine →2 issues
Your engine is triggering a P0471 diagnostic code (related to exhaust pressure sensing) before reaching 55,000 miles, and the problem persists even after you've had it repaired once. This suggests the underlying issue may not have been fully resolved. You'll likely need to have the vehicle scanned again and the exhaust pressure sensor system inspected more thoroughly.

Your car suddenly lost heat in cold weather without any warning lights or gauge indicators appearing. You discovered the coolant level was critically low, but after adding coolant, the level dropped again immediately with no visible leaks underneath. The owner suspects an issue with the EHRS (engine heater recirculation system) is causing the coolant to disappear, which could have caused engine damage if this occurred in hot weather.

Engine,fuel/propulsion System →2 issues
Your check engine light came on, and diagnostic testing suggested the problem may be related to an open recall on your vehicle. On January 28th, your car suddenly lost power and wouldn't exceed 30 mph on flat roads or 10 mph on hills. The manufacturer is investigating whether this is recall-related, but has confirmed there's no fix available yet and says it's safe to drive. You've been without your car since January 28th while the dealership and manufacturer work on diagnosis, with no loaner vehicle offered and no timeline for resolution.

Your engine started shaking and vibrating severely while driving at 3 AM, and your check engine light came on. After shutting off the engine and restarting it an hour later, your car could only drive very slowly. A diagnostic test found a cylinder 3 misfire, EVAP system errors, and a faulty fuel injector. The fix will likely involve replacing the fuel injector and addressing the misfiring cylinder, possibly including spark plugs and fuel system components.

Unknown Or Other →2 issues
You discovered a transmission safety recall listed on Hyundai's website for your VIN, but when you contacted Hyundai Motor America, they denied any recall existed for your vehicle—and the recall later disappeared from their website. This conflicting information is concerning because a transmission failure could cause loss of power or inability to accelerate, creating a safety risk during driving. Your car hasn't shown any warning lights or transmission problems yet, and recent service didn't identify any issues. Resolving this will likely require Hyundai to physically inspect your transmission and clarify whether a valid recall applies to your specific vehicle.

Your 2021 Sonata is subject to a safety recall (#286) issued on November 18, 2025 affecting the fuel tank, but Hyundai hasn't released a fix yet. You've been waiting over a month without a solution or loaner vehicle, and you're concerned about safety since this is your family's only car. Contact your Hyundai dealer to inquire about the status of the remedy and request alternative transportation assistance while the recall is being resolved.

Engine,fuel/propulsion System,visibility/wiper →1 issue
Your car's exhaust heat recovery system failed, causing about 9 gallons of engine coolant to leak into the hot exhaust. When you accelerate, this produces massive clouds of white smoke that completely block your view of traffic behind you and prevent other drivers from seeing your brake lights, creating a serious collision risk. The coolant loss also caused your engine to overheat and nearly stall while driving. This is the second time this part has failed, and Hyundai issued a technical service bulletin acknowledging the problem affects 2020-2023 Sonata Hybrids, but no safety recall has been issued. Fixing this requires replacing the exhaust heat recovery system core and possibly the oxygen sensors that were damaged by coolant contamination.

Engine,visibility/wiper →1 issue
Your car's engine cooling system failed and leaked coolant, which burned off as thick white smoke that blocked visibility behind your vehicle and forced other drivers to slow down or stop. The smoke caused your engine to overheat, forcing you to pull over on an unsafe road after driving less than a mile. Your Hyundai dealership confirmed this was a known issue with 2020-2023 Sonata Hybrids and warned that even after replacement, the problem could happen again. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the EHRS coolant system components and diagnosing why coolant is leaking and burning.

Unknown Or Other, lane Departure, forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
While driving, your car suddenly beeps and multiple dashboard warning lights appear at once (ABS, engine, tire pressure, blind spot sensors, forward collision sensors). When this happens, your car won't accelerate and becomes unresponsive. You've already cleaned the throttle body and replaced the gas pedal, but the problem keeps returning—it has happened three times since December. This issue involves the safety sensor systems and engine control, so a full diagnostic scan of the engine computer and sensor connections is needed to identify what's causing all these warnings to trigger simultaneously.

Suspension,engine,lane Departure →1 issue
Your engine is making rattling and knocking noises, and your transmission hesitates and jerks during acceleration. Your front struts and rear shocks appear worn out, causing a rough ride that's giving you back pain. Your starter doesn't work reliably, and most concerning, your lane-keeping assistance system malfunctions over bumps and steers your car into the opposite lane toward oncoming traffic. These issues started around 55,000 miles and require immediate inspection of the engine, suspension components, starter motor, and lane-keeping system software or sensors.

Power Train,unknown Or Other,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your 2021 Hyundai Sonata has an active safety recall for potential fuel tank pressurization and fire risk. You brought it to a dealership because of a check engine light, reduced engine performance, and a diagnostic code (P14EE) that matches the recall issue. The dealership refused to handle it as a recall repair, instead charging you a diagnostic fee and trying to sell you a fuel pump repair, and they replaced a fuel system sensor without your permission. The dealership did not document whether they actually checked the recall condition or provide test results showing the recall was ruled out. The fix will likely involve a complete fuel system inspection and potential fuel tank or fuel system component replacement as part of the safety recall.

Engine →1 issue
Your engine's heat exchanger may develop a coolant leak that causes coolant to seep into the exhaust system, where it burns away silently — making the problem hard to spot until your coolant level drops significantly. Hyundai has acknowledged this defect in technical service bulletin 23-EM-009H, but the warranty coverage varies by dealer and location, and typically expires before the problem appears. If your car is out of warranty, the dealer may refuse to use the TSB repair parts and instead quote you for a complete system replacement, which can cost around $3,000. The fix involves replacing the faulty heat exchanger or the entire cooling system, depending on warranty coverage.
