# **NHTSA Complaint Answers** ### **1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request?** The **engine** failed due to **sudden and extreme oil consumption** that resulted in the engine being completely dry of oil despite regular maintenance.

While driving on the highway at normal speed, the vehicle suddenly lost power with no prior warning lamps or messages, placing me and other road users at immediate risk. The engine rapidly began knocking, lost acceleration, then stalled completely. I had to coast to the shoulder, which was extremely dangerous in high-speed traffic.

2017 Santa Fe, car had fire in 09/2024 and was with dealership until 05/2025. BSD, ABS, TRACTION, and Parking Brake lights on the dash when vehicle was picked up. Dealership not complaint to pay as the assume it is an Outside issue

T3G Campaign 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport AWD, 116000 miles. Purchased from a dealer in VA [XXX]. Never would have purchased if engine issues had been disclosed.

The vehicle suddenly shut down while driving and the wheels locked up. There were no warning indicators at all. The failure happened to occur on a residential street, but if at speed on a highway this likely would have resulted an an accident.

I had just dropped my son off at the barbershop by my apartment. As I left the parking lot I proceeded to pull out into the street,as I tried to accelerate the car sputtered & lost all power. I then coasted into a nearby Wendy's.

Was going down the highway at 65 when my vehicle completely lost the accelerating component. Almost got rear ended so I pulled off. Then made it to work when it happened again.

Oil compsumption noted and leakage noted by mechanic. Informed me could cause a fire in engine compartment. Unsafe to drive.

My ‘17 Santa Fe has been well taken care of with regular oil changes and we have kept up with the recommended maintenance. While driving on 8/17/2023 the car started to struggle to accelerate and I heard a knocking sound. Within moments there was total engine and power failure and I had to quickly get the vehicle off the road to avoid being rear ended.

I was accelerating on the highway and my RMPS shot the whole way up over 7,000 then bottomed out. I lost speed so I pulled over. Another car pulled over to inform me my car was on fire.

On November 14, 2022 at approximately 0800 while traveling 495N in Massachusetts from Cape Cod my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe with 109,000 miles experienced catastrophic engine failure.

During acceleration from a stop sign/red light or turning the engine hesitates for approximately 5 seconds after several tries before reaching desired speed. When using cruise control on freeways there is a 10 to 15 second delay when accelerating or passing another vehicle which in one instance caused a near accident on a high speed freeway.

When accelerating, my vehicle hesitates presenting a safety issue when merging onto highways or making lane changes. Could absolutely lead to an accident, especially the risk of being rear ended. Also when turning, hesitates when speeding up after the turn.

On the interstate, pressed the gas pedal and the vehicle did not and would not accelerate. I tried multiple times. RPM went up to 5000 but shifting the transmission into sports mode and downshifting and upshifting made no difference in the speed of the vehicle.

There is a few seconds of hesitation when trying to accelerate at times. From a dead stop or a slow roll when turning, the car will move in slow motion only and the anti slip indicator comes on like you are on a slippery surface even when it's dry. Then it accelerates suddenly.

I purchased a brand new 2017 hyundai santa fe limited ultimate on may 5 of this year, and noticed a very hesitation during the drive home from the dealership. I figured it was the result of the engine breaking in and that I should just be patient. However, it continued...and progressively got worse.

Sometimes, when I press the gas to accelerate, my car does not go. It will move forward at a slow pace but then doesn't go as fast as I'm pressing the gas pedal, even though my rpms are increasing. This has almost caused an accident because the car does not perform as it should.

Intermittently since purchasing the vehicle on 3/28/16, when accelerating from a stop (eg. Merging into traffic), usually turning to the right or left, the vehicle hesitates for what seems to be more that a couple of seconds. The hesitation is enough to cause panic that oncoming traffic will have to stop abruptly to avoid a collision.

Hesitation when turning and accelerating from a stop, as you do when pulling out into traffic. Car nearly comes to a stop. Nearly had an accident and I have less than 1000 miles on odometer.

The transsmision fails to shift down upon coming to a rolling stop, such as when coming to a stop at a red light, then the light goes green and you accelerate, or turning in an intersection after coming to a near stop, or after traffic slows and you come to a near stop behind a car, then traffic begins to move and you accelerate out of the slow down.

When accelerating after slowing down to either make a left or right turn car loses power to the engine. It appears that the car is hesitating to accelerate and can be very dangerous when entering the highway. This can be very fatal especially for drivers unaware of this issue.

The care has less than 200 miles on it. It has a serious hesitation problem when slowing down and then attempting to accelerate. This has caused me a couple of near collisions when slowing down through an intersection and then attempting to drive through.

When slowing down then accelerating to a higher say (say in stop and go traffic) the transmission frequently lugs and struggles to select a gear, resulting in a significant acceleration delay. This poses a safety issue as a delay in acceleration could lead to a collision. This has been an issue since the car was new.

Your 2017 Santa Fe Sport has developed a serious oil consumption problem. Starting at around 100,000 miles, the engine began burning through oil at an increasing rate—first about 1 quart per month, then escalating to 1 quart every 2 weeks. Was driving on [XXX] (approximately 130 miles from home), when a loud clunking and metal on metal sound was heard, the causing power loss, slowing of vehicle and necessitated immediate pulling over to the side of the road. The was a catastrophic internal engine failure which caused the spark plugs to blow out. There were no warnings.

While driving on rural side road, two lanes, my check engine light (yellow, steady) came on. I pulled into a safe spot and did a quick survey, checked the owner manual, but could not identify any problem, and continued on my way. The check engine light was still on.

I first brought my car into a Hyundai certified service center after my car shook violently and my check engine light started flashing at me. I had to pull over on the side of a busy highway which is a safety risk on it's own. the Hyundai service center "fixed" my car and I was on my way.

I was driving down the road to get dog food when all the electrical went black on the car and it started down shifting, it quickly came back on It put my safety and others around me at risk as I was on [XXX] in Eustis a high traffic area in the middle lane and close to nowhere to get on the side.

On [XXX], I was driving southbound on the highway near Elizabeth City, NC when all of a sudden, my vehicle decelerated from 65 MPH to 20 MPH (limp mode) with no warning except for the sudden onset of a knocking noise in the engine compartment and the check engine light coming on immediately before entering limp mode.

Driving down rd at 35 MPH felt a sudden jolt and loud noise, car lost power and all lights came on. Coasted to a safe driveway and shut it down. Tried to re- start and it was a loud racket so immediately turned back off.

Morning of October 16th, wife said engine "clicked" at start and then stopped at idle. I checked oil as it had been changed week prior and all levels were normal, then performed diagnostic with Carista tool and app, no codes.

Over several documented and undocumented times since July 2021, this vehicle has consistently lost >1 quart of oil every 1k miles. This issue has been confirmed by the dealerships involved several times. It is identified as the Theta engine failure.

When turning left or right from a stop or low speed (<10 MPH) on a paved city street, intermittently the vehicle will not respond to my gas pedal. I can have the pedal all the way to the floor and the car will not accelerate. Only after 1.5 to 2.0 seconds will the car react, and when it does, it is violently fast.

The santa fe sport was purchased in july of 2017. When taking off from a redlight or while driving at a steady momentum on the road, the acceleration drops significantly and the rpms begin to rev up high, bouncing up and down, but the santa fe sport will stall. While on the highway, the issue continues and panic sents in due to the cars behind us can rear end the santa fe sport.

At stop when turning right are left and accelerating the transmission fails to respond ad the car stalls then will go. If slow to slow speed and accelerated the car will stall before shifting down. This problem is a safety hazard.

My wife and I have had the same intermittent problem since acquiring our 2017 santa fe brand new in the late spring of 2016. When turning from a stop or making a very low speed turn, and then starting to accelerate, the vehicle will stall and hesitate, not moving or "catching" for 1-2 seconds. Santa fe will stall from a stop when making a turn also will stall at a slow speed when you try to give it gas the date I put on this form is the last time it happened. This problem has happened before.

I bought a 2017 hyundai sante fe torbo ultimate and found on excelleration there was a bad hesitation. When accelerating from a stop and entering traffic, when you press on accelerator the transmission dis engages and leaves you in the middle of the intersection with no power and putting you in danger of being hit. Once transmission kicks back in, the engine revs and vehicle jolts. This is very dangerous and will get someone killed.

I have a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe with ~88,000 miles. I noticed on 12/18/2025 that the oil lamp light came on briefly then turned off. So, I decided to take my car in to get serviced on 12/19/2025.

The vehicle started to stall/drive in limp mode. I took it to the Hyundai dealership, and they quoted me $5000 for repairs. The repair recommendations were as followed: ensure connecting rod bearings are within spec, recommending performing timing job w/replacement of intake camshaft, e-cvvt motor/gear, e-cvvt cover, and other components necessary for repairs. This engine burns/consumes oil and the engine code that shows up in P00100. All of this after I paid it off. Not within warranty anymore either. $22,000 down the drain it seems... called hyundai customer service to see if there was anything that could be done but they said there is nothing they can do and I have to fix it even though it is a manufacturing issue.

I am out $4000 on a car I bought a year and a half ago in October 2023.Was told my warranty only lasted a year.

The car is 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe with a defective crankshaft. The car is leaking oil. I called Hyundai and they noted that although they have recall 168 the VIN for my car doesn't match a recall that is on their website.

Not really an incident but my car has the same issue as the class action lawsuit from Hyundai for issues with the connector rods going out. I can’t get it fixed because of this issue. Hyundai says they can’t do anything about it and sent me your info!

The crankshaft broke due to abnormal wear the cars mileage is 102000 the check engine light never cam on it died in the middle of the freeway with no warning at all

My 2017 Sante Fe had an engine seizure on April 28th and Thank God nobody was injured. Allowing people to drive around in this ticking time bombs, without any notification of a potential issue, is very concerning. Especially for someone who owns 2 Hyundai vehicles that are driven on dangerous highways in PA.

Rod bearing failure causing rod knocking. Engine needs rebuilt or replaced!

Passenger airbag constantly coming on when there is a passenger, and when no one is on the passenger seat. Oil light has been flashing/ lighting up and going off. I told several service members about this problem, they all shrug it off.

***(NW Indiana)*** 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Ultimate FWD 3.3L - 64,000mi. Driven to and from work and around town. Purchased used with 31,000mi in July 2020 from Knauz Hyundai.

With no warning lights, no unusual sounds coming from engine (knocking, or otherwise) - complete engine shutoff. Driving on highway at 55-60mph during acceleration. I was able to coast to the side.

From what I was told by the dealer my engine has failed / locked up due to the low bearings. I was put at risk because as I was driving at 45mph on a dry road and the vehicle acted as if I hit the brake and skid, luckily I was able to get to the side of the road and noticed lights on my dash, I tried to start the vehicle while parked and it sounded like marbles so I immediately turned it off.

car was in shop for recall on wheel sensor ,next day the engine stopped working properly .ran really ruff and hesitated .took back to dealer and told 2 cylinders were not running correctly. I was told they would submit the Hyundai for engine replacement.

The engine is consuming oil. After 1500 miles since my last oil change the oil DOES NOT show up on the oil stick. I have bought 3 brand new Hyundai Santa Fe's and 1 used Sonata, and NEVER had problems, except for my 2017 Santa Fe Sport, which I purchased at Dondelinger Hyundai in Baxter, Minnesota.

Bought hyundai sante fe sport 2017 36,871 miles on 09-23-2019 dealership oil change 03-06-20 miles 41104 dealership oil change, 03-03-21 miles 47409 oil very low and dark in color. Dealership requesting oil consumption test every 1000 miles, 04-01-21 1.5 quarts low. I have to do 2 more test, this is a skirt around the problem, and an engine flush for sludge, more skirting the problem.

I have taken my car in 4 or more times because there is a slip in the transmission and the car is not shifting properly. This was bought in 2017 with 150 miles, the first occupancy happened within months. I have been told my engine was sensitive and not to let others drive it, turn off the car, or the dealership has been unable to duplicate the error.

I have had on at least a half dozen times where the vehicle will not accelerate after stopping, and then attempting to accelerate. For example: leaving a parking lot going onto a roadway attempting to accelerate quickly to get up to the speed limit. Attempting to turn left at a flashing red left turn lane traffic light.

This vehicle has a intermittent acceleration problem which causes a delay in the vehicle movement. The dealer stated they cannot duplicate the problem however the issue does exist. Many owners are having the same problem as I read on line.

Go through car wash must have under body sprayed type of car wash . I leave p1326 code vehicle goes into limp mode already had wire harness replaced by dealer. didn't correlate car wash until I recalled getting same one first day it occurred when I brought in for repair.

My 2018 hyundai sante fe was purchase 'certified' used from puente hills hyundai in southern california. About a year into owning my car it began to jerk and felt like I went over a hard bump when I would accelerate from a stop and then began doing it while I would drive up hills. Puente hills hyundai informed me there was a recall and that the recall would 'solve' the issue.

There has been some engine noise for 2 months or so. I then had an oil leak and the dealer said that the engine noise was from crankshaft and maybe a bearing inside. I have 74, 000 miles on vehicle and have a 10 year 125000 mile extended warranty.

When I drive going straight at about 40 to 48 MPH on eco mode or any drive mode the car jumps/ jerks like it shifts into a low gear and then goes back into a high gear with no heavy acceleration. If I have it on cruise control at 45mph it will kick back and forth occasionally as if I was slamming on the gas pedal then slightly on the break but quickly.

While I am driving and my car is changing gears, it does fine until its in fourth gear. The RPM will go to about 2,800 until it changes to fifth gear. Onve its in 5th gear the RPM will go into a "neutral" state and rev from 4,700 RPM to 5,700 without any acceleration.

I had my car for 12 months I bought bran new. It has staled and turn off on me at least 5 times. This is a safety issue especially on the freeway the car loses power and stops.than before it stops makes a knocking noise.

Severe hesitation when coming out of a sharp turn. Also happens upon acceleration after a traffic light. Happening more frequently as time goes on currently 13k miles on vehicle.

Vehicle has intermittent starting issues similar to a low or dead battery. Will only start when it wants. Usually happens at first start of the day or late afternoon.

Upon moving after complete stop and turning vehicle to right or left, there is hesitation before there is throttle response. It occurs more often if while initially making a turn and any size bump or pothole is encountered. A very dangerous situation as there is no way to make an avoidance maneuver if necessary since there is no immediate throttle response.

9/18/17 while driving on highway at 65 MPH the ABS light came on and the vehicle while trying to accelerate moved slow as if to not want to shift. I got to the side of the freeway and turned the vehicle off and when I re started a few minuets later the light went out and vehicle operated without out problem. I made appointment with dealership for 9/26/17.

2017 hyundai sante fe sport AWD - purchased in oct 2017. Currently have 7525 miles on vehicle. I noticed acceleration hesitation immediately after making in city turns (from both stationary and in motion turns) as well as when getting on highway (in motion).

The vehicle fails to accelerate past the initial press of the accelerator from a stop leaving you committed in traffic without power for around 2 seconds. Stepping on the accelerator fails to produce any power. Just had the vehicle looked at by hyundai who said they can find nothing wrong.

2017 santa fe sport with turbo.when turning left into traffic from a stop or near stop, the acceleration studders or doesn't respond, it acts as though it isn't engaging the gears in the transmission. Very dangerous when trying to enter traffic, you start to roll, like you are releasing a clutch in a manual transmission, but it doesn't accelerate until you are committed to the turn.

When making a right, left, or u turn the power completely cuts out and the car is left drifting without power. Their is no response to pushing on the gas peddle when this happens. At the same time on the dash the orange traction control light comes on.

When doing a low speed turn,and drive mode switch is in eco mode,way too much lag time before vehicle accelerates.you push accelerator pedal down ,normally,and vehicle does not speed up ,instantly.sometimes,it is a full second before vehicle starts to gain speed.that is dangerous when vehicles are approaching you.I have had the vehicle only three weeks,and this can be extremely dangerous.I traded in a like model vehicle,which was a 2013 year,and it did not have that issue in eco mode.this issue must be fixed.

The 2017 hyundai santa fe limited will bog down when starting from a stopped or low speed while trying to merge into traffic or turning. There is a significant hesitation - almost to the point of stopping while merging - very significant safety issue. Been an ongoing problem since bought 5/31/16

I have been experiencing intermittent hesitation with acceleration (especially when resuming speed after slowing down). I have taken car back to dealership 3 times. They performed a computer update to "relearn my driving style" and then they replaced the transmission.

I have had the car 2.5 months and at least once a day there is a major delay when accelerating from a stop or rolling stop. The car jerks, and does not accelerate for a few seconds. This is very dangerous when turning, getting onto the freeway, changing lanes, etc.

We bought a 2017 santa fe sport with the 2.0 t engine in july of 2017. It has about 5,000 miles on it and has now started to hesitate badly when trying to accelerate when turning. It seems as though it either loses power or the transmission is not in the correct gear.

When accelerating at low speeds, the vehicle does not shift properly and poses danger. Took it to a dealer and confirmed that the vehicle does not shift properly. Since it does not throw check engine light, dealer specified that they are not supposed to fix it without any code.

I had the recall / reflash of the computer done on 08/10/16 and the hesitation in turns is a little less abrupt but still present and intermittent.

Sometimes after slowing to make a turn the car's engine seems to "stumble" for a second before acceleration can begin. Comes as a surprise and because of the hesitation catching me off-guard I am pitched forward in my seat. Nothing catastrophic, but very annoying and could be dangerous to a driver not knowledgeable about this problem.

Hesitates when taking off. Jerks at about 10 MPH and then again at about 20 MPH but not as bad as at 10 MPH. Hesitates when given gas after jerking.

I am experience a hesitation in the acceleration from either a dead stop or a rolling stop. When the accelerator is pushed, there is a 1-2 second delay in power. The engine appears to cut out and then it kicks in and takes off.

The vehicle :"chokes" out at low speed often when turning a corner or from a slow start. I took the vehicle into the dealer and they ran diagnostics and declared they detected no problem. However, the problem still exists and may cause an issue if acceleration is required.

2017 santa fe se 3.3l v-6 (3 row) frequently hesitates/stumbles badly when given normal acceleration at 5-15 MPH. When slowing down or rolling stop, vehicle seems not to downshift from 3rd gear to 2nd gear correctly. Car is unresponsive for 1-3 seconds, then there is a delay and lurching forward as the car finally downshifts and accelerates.

Transmission hesitates badly for about 1-2 seconds before going into gear to move car after coming to complete/rolling stop or in slow turns. Transmission does this only intermittently. This can be dangerous for merging into traffic on highway or streets due to fact that car will not respond immediately to driver acceleration input.

I have a 2017 sante fe limited ultimate and when slowing down to between 10 to 15 MPH and then trying to accelerate the 3.3 liter motor 6 speed transmission hesitates when down shifting from 3rd gear to 2nd gear. This hesitation left me in intersections a few seconds longer than I should have been making the cars coming from the opposite direction dangerously close to me.

Purchased new on april 17th of this year. Vehicle continually has a problem accelerating from low speed....roughly between 2 and 10 miles an hour. If you slow down but do not come to a complete stop the vehicle will have a long pause then lurch into correct gear.

I bought this vehicle at Enterprise car sales back in [XXX] and it's been having issues for a while now recall after recall I bought this vehicle at 7745 Indiana avenue Riverside California 92504 I actually bought this vehicle without realizing that this car had a recall prior to buying it off the lot therefore in California law this company should have not sold the vehicle with a recall as Hyundai has warned me about this as he advised they cannot sell a vehicle with a recall on it.

Catastrophic engine failure without warning. Rod bearings blew car unable to produce power.

The engine of my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe started making a loud knocking sound on 9/29/2023. I took the car to a certified mechanic who said that the engine had “thrown a rod.” I researched the NHTSA website and found NHTSA Part 573 Safety Recall Report No. 17V-578 dated Sep 20, 2017.

Camshaft actuator first thst costed over $4200 to fix and now engine needing to be rebuilt with an estimated cost of over $17 000

Without any notification from a malfunction indicator light, there was a sudden knock followed by loss of power. Luckily I was on a country road and not on the highway 99 where congested traffic could have been a hazard. My mechanic said it was a rod bearing code causing catastrophic failure of the motor.

Car shifts rough, mostly into first gear. As the problem has persisted, it has worsened and also shifts rough in higher gears.

I was making a left turn on to a street going uphill and my 2017 hyundai sante fe sport AWD ultimate hesitated for approximately 10 seconds. When I pressed the gas I could not get speed. My traction lights blinked on and off.

Acceleration issues. On at least two separate occasions, acceleration from a stop resulted in the car staying at the same speed. Had to remove my foot from the gas pedal and reapply several times to get it moving.

Multiple times while attempting to accelerate the rpms will go up and the car does not move. When it finally goes the car will jerk and the rpms fall. There seems to be a loss of power when this happens.

Hit pot hole after stop and stability control stops power to transmission...5-8 seconds of no accelaration has caused safety issue when merging into traffic. Appears to be a very common problem on user based forums.

Car hesitates to accelerate from a complete stop, accelerating while coming out of turn, or slowing down and accelerating again. Also seems to be using a lot of gas. Haven't calculated it yet but can see the fuel gauge lower as I'm driving.

I have the 2017 sport 2.0t model, and I am experiencing the same powertrain issue. When driving at slow speeds, there is a 3-4 second delay if power is needed suddenly. The powertrain just goes to sleep and nothing happens, followed by a sudden, dangerous lurch.

When accelerating the car bogs down. It happens randomly. Dangerous if you are making a left hand turn with oncoming traffic.

Vehicle hesitates when pulling out in traffic from a turn or stop like it's not in gear momentarily. Very dangerous, please fix before someone is killed. Also I have only 2100 miles on the car and I noticed the paint has chips all over the hood, front bumper,quarter panels.

On low speed turns (below 20 MPH) the engine and transmission exhibit a loss of power. This jeopardizes my family's safety when turning in traffic. I have opened a case with hyundai america (#9484960) who left me a voicemail (still have it) stating there is a software update to address the issue I described.

Transmission not down shifting when re throttling out of corners as in turning and when trying to cross traffic, you slow down than hit the gas and it feels like it's in a high gear ,you slowly creeps out into on coming traffic waiting for the down shift to put you into 1 st gear so you won't be killed by on coming flow, very dangerous, vehicle one week old

While in slow speeds, the transmission struggles to select the proper gear. Causing the vehicle to accelerate faster tan normal, specially while turning after reducing speed. You have to control the acceleration using your driving experience, however this is not safe at all.

There is a recurring issue with the transmission where in low or slow speed situations when you apply power the transmissions stutters or stumbles. It is most prevalent when turning in an intersection across oncoming traffic where you never quite stop or when rolling at stop sign.
