THIS HAPPENED WHEN MY DEALER TRIED TO FILL UP THE GAS TANK BEFORE HANDING ME THE KEYS AND THOUGHT THE VEHICLE WAS FULL OF GAS AND THE GAS GAUGE WAS BROKEN. I RAN OUT OF GAS THE SAME NIGHT AND FOUND OUT THAT THE GAS WAS INDEED EMPTY AND THE GAUGE WORKED FINE AFTER PUTTING GAS IN FROM A GAS CONTAINER. WHEN TRYING TO FILL UP WITH GAS FROM THAT POINT ON, EVEN WHEN THE GAS TANK IS EMPTY, THE GAS GETS EJECTED BACKED OUT AFTER ONLY A FEW SECONDS OF FILLING AND I GET GAS ON MYSELF DUE TO A FAILURE SOMEWHERE IN THE ON-BOARD REFUELING VAPOR RECOVERY SYSTEM. I HAVE TO FILL THE GAS VERY SLOWLY, ABOUT 1 GALLON OF GAS WILL TAKE APPROXIMATELY 3-5 MINUTES TO PUT IN. THIS CAN LEAD TO INADVERTENTLY INHALING VAPOR DUE TO BEING AT THE PUMP FOR SO LONG AND THAT GAS IS ON MY CLOTHES AND IT ALSO CAN BE CONSIDERED A FIRE RISK SINCE YOU ARE COVERED WITH GAS. THE MECHANICS THAT MY DEALER PROVIDED DECIDED TO BYPASS THE VENT IN THE HOSE WHERE THE GAS COMES IN FROM THE FILLING NOZZLE TO THE GAS TANK. THIS HELPED PUT MORE GAS IN AT ONE TIME, BUT IT WAS STILL SPITTING GAS BACK OUT, AND THE PROBLEM GOT WORSE IN ABOUT A WEEK WHEN IT WENT BACK INTO THE ORIGINAL STATE WHERE GAS WILL SPIT BACK OUT AFTER A FEW SECONDS OF FILLING. AFTER RESEARCHING, IT CAN BE THAT THE CHARCOAL PELLETS MAY HAVE COME LOOSE DUE TO PREVIOUS OWNERS OVERFILLING OR THAT THE MESH COTTON THAT KEEPS THE PELLETS IN MIGHT HAVE DETERIORATE OVER TIME DUE TO THE GAS EATING AWAY AT THE MATERIAL AND THEREFORE RELEASING THE PELLETS. ALSO, PEOPLE HAVE SUGGESTED THAT USING A STEEL MESH WORKS BETTER AND LASTS LONGER. *TR

MY 2002 HYUNDAI SANTA FE LX WENT FULL THROTTLE TODAY AND STAYED THERE. I WAS DRIVING ALONG AT 30 MPH WITH THE GAS PEDAL NORMALLY PRESSED AND THE CAR FELT LIKE CRUISE CONTROL WAS TURNED ON. I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE THROTTLE KEPT CLIMBING, SO I PULLED OVER AND PUT IT IN NEUTRAL. THE THROTTLE WAS NOW FULLY OPEN AT THIS POINT SO I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF. WITH REPEATED STARTS, THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY WENT INTO FULL THROTTLE WHILE IN NEUTRAL. THE GAS PEDAL WASN'T PRESSED DOWN OR STUCK. I'VE HAD IT TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT SHOP SO THEY CAN IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. TOMORROW I SHOULD HAVE ANSWERS. VERY DANGEROUS! FIRST MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR IN 11 YEARS AND IT ENDS UP BEING LIFE THREATENING. *TR

I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 2002 SANTA FE. FRED ZINK WE HAVE 149,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE I JUST DISCOVERED A PERFORATION ON THE METAL FUEL FILL SPOUT JUST BELOW WHERE YOU INSERT THE FUEL SPOUT THIS CAUSED FUEL TO SPILL ALL OVER THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR AND ON TO THE GROUND THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
