Owner Complaints (17)
Your 2010 Honda Pilot has been experiencing engine misfiring that triggers the check engine light. The dealership initially suggested fuel treatments and filter changes, but the problem persisted; they later replaced spark plugs during the recall period, but refused to perform the full repair (piston ring replacement) once the recall window closed in October 2017. You've reported unexpected engine surges while driving that created safety concerns, but Honda has denied further assistance since the recall deadline has passed.

Your engine is consuming oil excessively, which has caused the pistons to fail and the engine to stop working. The dashboard oil warning light never came on to alert you, even though the oil level became critically low between your oil changes. Your mechanic confirmed this is a known issue with your year and model of Honda Pilot. Addressing this will likely require engine repair or replacement to fix the damaged pistons and restore engine function.

Your engine stopped working while you were driving without any warning signs. A mechanic found that your engine was burning through oil too quickly, which caused the camshaft to fail. Even after replacing the engine, the same problem happened again due to excessive oil consumption. The manufacturer declined to help cover the repair costs.

Your engine is burning oil, meaning oil is being consumed during normal operation rather than just leaking out. You may notice the oil level dropping between services or see blue smoke from the exhaust. This typically requires the engine to be inspected and repaired by a mechanic, which might involve replacing worn piston rings or valve seals.

While driving at 65 mph, your 2010 Honda Pilot started vibrating and a warning light came on. You safely pulled over and had it towed to the dealer. The dealer found that the piston and spark plug had failed. The fix will likely involve replacing the spark plugs and potentially inspecting or repairing the piston and engine components.

While driving on the highway, your car started shaking and the check engine light flashed, which was dangerous at highway speeds. The Honda dealer diagnosed a misfire in the second cylinder and replaced piston rings 1-3 to fix the problem. The repair involved replacing worn piston rings that were allowing combustion gases to escape.

Your check engine light blinks on and off, and your VAN-4 and VSA warning lights also illuminate. When you had it diagnosed, the code showed an engine misfire. This problem has happened multiple times over the past year even after repairs, suggesting the underlying issue keeps returning. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and replacing whatever is causing the misfire, such as ignition coils, spark plugs, or fuel injectors.

HAVING TROUBLE WITH OIL! THERE'S NO SHOWN LEAKAGE AND NO SMOKE LIKE IT'S BURNING THE OIL! HAS BEEN GOING ON THE LAST 2-3 MONTHS! ALSO BAD GAS MILEAGE, GOING THRU GAS PRETTY QUICKLY! MY MECHANIC HAS CHECKED SEVERAL TIMES, SEES NOTHING NOTICEABLE, HE REMEMBERED HEARING THIS PROBLEM ON OTHER HONDA VEHICLES!
EXCESSIVE OIL BURNING ISSUE. BETWEEN STANDARD OIL CHANGE MILEAGE DISTANCE, THE ENGINE CAN BURN SO MUCH OIL THAT IT NO LONGER REGISTERS ON THE DIPSTICK SETTING A FAULTY POSITIVE FOR A BAD ROCKER ARM OIL PRESSURE SWITCH. OBVIOUSLY IF THE ENGINE GET SO LOW ON OIL IT CAN BE CATASTROPHIC AND IF THAT HAPPENS AT SPEED THEN IT COULD BE DEADLY. I'VE CAUGHT IT EARLY ENOUGH THAT SO FAR IT HASN'T CAUSED CATASTROPHIC FAILURE BUT I'M TOLD BY MY DEALERSHIP AND HONDA THAT THERE IS NOTHING TO BE DONE AND TO JUST LET IT BREAK.
CAR HAS BEEN BURRING OIL FOR YEARS. I HAVE TALKED TO AND TAKEN IT TO HONDA SEVERAL TIME. I ALWAYS GET THE SAME ANSWER. IT'S NORMAL TO BURN A QUART EVERY 1000 MILES.
THE ENGING MISS FIRES FOULING SPARKS PLUGS BURNS OIL ABOUT 2 QUART EVERY OIL CHANGE HONDA SHOP SAID IT'S THIS PART AND THAT PART ENGING ONLY HAS 1'2000 MILES ON THE HIWAY CITY STREETS RUNS BAD.
ENGINE BURNS EXCESSIVE OIL AND ENGINE HESITATES FROM TIME TO TIME
ENGINE CONSUMING OIL. ENGINE WENT FROM FULL TO EMPTY IN OIL CAPACITY BETWEEN OIL CHANGES.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 HONDA PILOT. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, THE VEHICLE MADE AN ABNORMAL NOISE AS IF A TIRE WERE DEFLATED. THE CONTACT COASTED THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND NOTICED THAT THERE WERE SMOKE EMITTING FROM THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TIMING BELT DETACHED, WHICH CAUSED THE ENGINE TO FAIL. THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 145,000.
CRUISING ON THE HIGHWAY THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON AND CAR STARTED PUTTING AND DECELERATING (LOSS OF POWER). PRESSING ON THE GAS PADDLE COULD HARDLY SUSTAIN SPEED. DROVE TO DEALERSHIP AND IT WAS DETERMINED THAT IT WAS A FAULTY SPARK PLUG. THE SAME HAS HAPPENED BEFORE WITH ANOTHER SPARK PLUG (THAT TIME UNDER WARRANTY) . ACCORDING TO HONDA DEALER SPARK PLUGS ARE REPLACED AT 100,000 MILES AND THIS VEHICLE HAS 40,000 MILES. SINCE IT HAPPENED TWICE ALREADY MOST LIKELY IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN AND IT IS A DEFECTIVE SERIES OF SPARK PLUGS. HONDA US DECLINED TO ASSIST STATING THAT IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY (EVEN THOUGH THE DEALERSHIP DID INCLUDE IT UNDER WARRANTY UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS IS UN-ACCEPTABLE). THIS SEEMS TO BE A PREVALENT PROBLEM IN HONDA PILOT (SEE OTHER COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET). CAN YOU HELP? I WOULD LIKE HONDA TO REPLACE ALL SPARK PLUGS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 HONDA PILOT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE BOLT ON THE ENGINE WELD TANKER CAME APART, CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL. THE VEHICLE WAS MERGED TO THE SHOULDER AND THEN TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DRIVABLE. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT THE ENGINE WELD TANKER BOLT CAME APART AND THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER ALSO STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS OR WARRANTIES ADDRESSING THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 11,000.
