VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
THIS IS NOT A SAFETY RECALL IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SAFETY ACT. HOWEVER, IT IS DEEMED A SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN BY THE AGENCY. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL FEELS ROUGH OR NOTCHY WHEN YOU PRESS IT.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE THROTTLE CABLE.

While using cruise control set at 60 mph, you pressed the accelerator and the car continued accelerating even after you released the pedal. When you applied the brake, cruise control didn't disengage, and when you pressed the clutch, the engine kept revving higher. The engine eventually seemed to hit some limit before the cruise control finally disengaged. The fix may involve inspecting or replacing the cruise control cable, throttle linkage, or the cruise control module itself.

Your floor mat may be positioned in a way that interferes with your accelerator pedal while driving. If the mat shifts or isn't placed correctly, it could catch on the pedal and affect your ability to control your car's speed. TL* - THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 HONDA CIVIX DX. WHILE DRIVING AT 15 MPH THE BRAKE PEDAL BECAME HARD TO ENGAGE. THE DEALER MAILED HER RECALL 99I002000 REGARDING VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL. THIS FAILURE OCCURRED SINCE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE ON DECEMBER 24, 2006. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE 162,956. *AK UPDATED 03/30/07. *JB
I HAVE A 1996 HONDA ACCORD WITH 121,000 MILE. WHEN I PULLED INTO PARKING SPACE TODAY MY ENGINE REVVED AND WOULD NOT STOP. IT HYDRO PLANED OVER A SIDEWALK AND HIT A BUILDING, THEN BOUNCED OFF BUILDING WHILE I WAS HITTING THE BRAKES, AND THEY WOULD NOT STOP THE CAR. THERE WERE JUST MINOR INJURIES. *AK
THE CONSUMER STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO 40 MPH. THE CONSUMER HIT THE BRAKES, BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. HE FINALLY WENT OFF THE ROAD INTO A GARDEN AND HIT A WALL. THE CONSUMER WAS KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS. THE CONSUMER SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES, AND WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE HE WAS CHECKED OUT AND RELEASED. THE POLICE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED. WHILE PARKING THE CAR AT AN APARTMENT COMPLEX, I SLOWLY PULLED THE CAR INTO A SPOT. THE CAR FOLLOWING SAW MY BRAKE LIGHTS. I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND WAS ABOUT TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND THERE WAS A STRANGE NOISE THAT SOUNDED LIKE OVERDRIVE AND THE CAR SURGED FORWARD INTO A REINFORCED CONCRETE WALL. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE THE WHOLE TIME BUT I COULD NOT CONTROL THE CAR, THE WALL STOPPED US FROM MOVING. MY MOTHER WAS A PASSENGER AND SAID THAT I SHOUTED" WHAT IS HAPPENING?" CRUISE CONTROL FAILED.
IN THE FIRST INCIDENT, THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN BETWEEN 60- 85 MPH AND SUDDENLY ACCELERATED UNTIL THE DRIVER STEPPED ON THE BRAKES. THE DEALER ACKNOWLWDGED THAT THE ACCELERATOR HAD STRUCK AND STATED THAT THE "CABLE" NEEDED REPLACING. DURING THE SECOND INCIDENT, THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING BETWEEN 30-45 MPH AND CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE WHILE THE DRIVER STEPPED ON THE BRAKES. THE DRIVER REACH DOWN AND PULLED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL UP TO STOP THE VEHICLE. AGAIN THE DEALER STATED THAT THE CABLE NEEDED REPALCING. *AK

ACCELERATOR PEDAL GOT STUCK AND ACCIDENT OCCURRED.
THROTTLE CABLE FAILED.
OWNER STATES WHILE DRIVING AT ABOUT 35-40MPH ON A CONGESTED HIGHWAY THE THROTTLE GOT STUCK, CAUSING VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE TO 60-70 MPH. THE CAR COULD BE STOPPED BY TURNING OFF THE IGNITION WHICH IS ALSO DANGEROUS IN CONGESTED TRAFFIC. OWNER DOES NOT KNOW WHAT CAUSED THIS PROBLEM, BUT HE NOTES THAT HE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. *AK
